Title: U.S. insert posters that were BORN to be insert posters!
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on October 24, 2010, 08:42:31 PM
So I have room for one insert (14x36) poster (or insert frame) on my wall.  Any suggestions?

Ideally, the image design should be perfect for the thin & vertical format - like the Deep book promo (11x44) or Deep "special poster" (14.5x75) - and be different & superior to the art on the other size posters for that movie. It should not be just the regular OS art stuck on an insert.

P.S. No daybills or other vertical formats for this thread - just good ol' US inserts 14x36.

Goldfinger Alamo?  That is what we decided on when we needed to fill a tall/skinny space.

Good idea Harry but I literally have 15.5" x 39" to work with, so Goldfinger (17.5) is too big.  Also, this thread is ideally an opportunity for folks to show off their insert posters.

Um...I have to ask. Why not? Whats wrong with a nice daybill or locandina?

Spatially and thematically, a Jaws insert is the only way to go...

Thanks Archie - that's a great one.

No particular budget, just looking for cool inserts to rotate in an insert frame.
Title: Re: U.S. insert posters that were BORN to be insert posters!
Post by: Harry Caul on October 24, 2010, 11:42:04 PM
Well, if you are going to rotate I assume you aren't looking for something super expensive (Some Like it Hot is one of my favorites in this format).  And I tend to avoid inserts that have been minty-whited... although I do LOVE the idea of a Jaws/Jaq combo!

I think 1984 is when they stopped making inserts, but that still leaves some fun titles that can be had for a reasonable price... Once Upon a Time in America, Streets of Fire, Ghostbusters, Swamp Thing, Conan, First Blood, American Werewolf in London, Scanners, The Thing, Escape from New York, Prom Night (great use of the vertical format), The Shining, Blues Brothers, etc...  And of course there are a bunch of Moore Bonds that aren't too expensive.

My favorite is the EXCALIBUR insert.  The Lady of the Lake's hand holding the sword out of the water.

Scarface, but you gotta be careful buying that one, for previously stated reasons.  Hang 'Em High also makes a pretty good insert, but its a bitch to find.  The Right Stuff transfers pretty well to the insert format.  Alien is another one that works pretty well, but once again, be careful of the minty whites.

I dont really know what the hell this post is about anymore, but I will state 2 things:

1) Inserts suck, buy daybills if you like that general size.

2) The Deep is one the most underrated films and posters of its era!

Title: Re: U.S. insert posters that were BORN to be insert posters!

inserts don't suck..
quite frequently, inserts of the pre-1950 period have different art than their 1sheet counterpart

I like them best however when the image is a full length pic of one o fthe stars as is the case with an insert I have for the Crusades (DeMille), Pal Joey, or Why Must I Die

I know people who only collect inserts

Yeah I like Inserts a lot, I want to get one for each of the Lewtons (reissues), I have a few already.

Including one like this, which was the first Lewton film I saw as a kid - Id love a 1st release but am happy with this version.

Lots of great ideas, people!  Keep 'em coming, especially pics.

Yes, the Deep is one of my favorite books/movies.  So many cool aspects - two shipwrecks from different eras on the same spot, exotic location, moray eel biting heads off, Jacqueline Bisset in skimpy bathing suit - what more can you ask?

Great selection Rich.  With the vertical format I've always found (perhaps obviously) that vertical artwork works best for inserts and daybills...

Given the recent troubles the Catholic church has had with...inappropriate...behavior of it's clergymen, that "Angels With Dirty Faces" is just plain wrong on a multitude of levels.

I bought this one last night, works well in the insert format:

I like this insert so much that I ordered not one BUT two insert frames.  Now to find the inserts to fill them....

I suppose these will just go on the ceiling?

Super glue will help.

And will these be on either side of the mirror?   ;D

Attention, ye mockers. "But know" that I have room for six insert frames in my abode of wonderment.  However, I must restrain myself lest I descend further into the valley of debt....

Six $40 insert frames is where you draw the line?  Really? :D

It's a good pair of titles, but it doesn't really fit the theme of being born to be an insert.

In my view, this is little more than 3 lobby cards pieced together.  A good insert should have a strong vertical element, and all three sections of this are all horizontal (landscape) composition.

Or perhaps it is just sour grapes on my part :)

Well I quite like it and it has found a permanent home in my office.  Those of you who like plenty of white wall space will like this arrangement:

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.  It is an OK poster with iconic titles and will show well.  I got nothing against inserts and currently have 8 on display on my own narrow walls (example below).  I was just saying that it doesn't fit the topic of posters which are BORN to be inserts.

"I LOVE that Vertigo insert."

Take that, haters  :-*

I need to see this anonymous colleague's qualifications prior to accepting their judgment...

For instance where are they on the Star Accumulation Scale?

My first thought.

Who knows, they could be a five star collector...

Guys... it was a ''she'' who said that.. and you bet she just needed a quick glance to know what she was looking at.  Not as large as a poster, thank God not as small as a herald. It is clearly an insert.

The inches said it all. Women you see. We know about these things.

Any other queries?

If that's true I suspect a lot of the "Horny APF Bastards" are going to be feeling short changed...

Not much outing.  I think everyone knows its there.

But, yep, I think that one is born to be an insert.

That is top-notch, Charlie.  thumbup

I don't know if I've already posted this pic, but here's another insert that really works for me.
The design mentality of the era is evident in every square inch of this poster.
It is absolutely magnificent.

I was gonna post it in the Universal Monsters thread but Inserts are under-rated and over-looked.

And yes, I own 17 of these.

Bravo, Rosa.  Both of those have that sense of major vertical composition that makes a great insert.

Here is an interesting case.  I have the Risky Business insert.  The graphics are pretty much the same as the 1 sheet, but they added space and text between the Tom Cruise image and DeMorney on the Porsche.  To my eye, that added distance adds some dramatic tension to the poster.  I get a stronger feeling from the insert.  Comments?
