Title: Gavelsnipe - EBay blocking their bids
Post by: Simes on July 16, 2019, 04:25:19 AM
IMPORTANT: We are aware of the issues with eBay sniping, and it appears eBay is blocking snipes from GavelSnipe. As we look into resolving these issues, it is recommended GavelSnipe NOT be used for important eBay bids. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Having last night experienced a snipe of £250 being outbid by someone's bid of £22, I looked around and found the above at the top of their web page.

Not sure what eBay's reasoning is as this reduces their profit margins; as the above numbers would mathematically suggest.  Does anyone know of;

1. Another eBay approved (!) sniping tool.
2. If in fact, eBay is blocking all sniping tools.

Many thanks.

Agh, thanks a lot for the heads up, Simes. I had a snipe lined up so very glad you posted this.

I'm also interested in alternatives people can recommend. I used to use https://www.auctionstealer.com/faq.cfm - but I haven't used it in a couple of years and you're limited in the number of free snipes per week if I remember correctly.

Needless to say, while I woke up this morning in anticipation of a fresh and sunny day, the clouds quickly darkened my horizons with this issue...

This seems to be happening to a few of these sites. I changed to Gixen a few months back and have had good results. Haven’t used it recently though so I don’t know if they are having the same issues.

I've been pleased with Gixen too.

But my last snipe was a week or more ago so I'm also not sure if they've been affected.

As of June 28th, my previously most recent bid was successful with Gavel.

I will try Gixen.

Thanks fellas.

Yep, I missed a few "big" snipes a week ago and expressed my frustration to the seller for blocking US bids when the poor fellow had nothing to do with it.  It was before Gavelsnipe realized they had been blocked by Ebay.

I doubt that ebay is actually 'blocking' bids.
More likely they uploaded a software update and Gavelsnipe needs to re-write some code for proper access

Having sent a mail to Gavelsnipe, have heard nothing back from them...

Their banner is still up citing issues...

Does anyone have any news?  Contact info?

Just a general update, put in a cheap bid on an item to test Gavelsnipe and it's still not working.
It's a shame, as I had looked back at my bid history and had 472 successful Snipes.

I'm sure Heritage financed the construction as a way to help bidders on their own platform, with the ebay portion being a bonus. So not sure if it will ever be fixed, as HA's proxy service makes Gavelsnipe kind of useless for HA now.

Thanks for this.

Coincidentally, I popped on yesterday to see if the banner was removed.

Still had no response to my email from July.

But, as I have not been bidding on eBay, I have not missed it.  Wasn't aware HA had financed this...

Wasn't aware HA had financed this...

It was in a thread several years back, but looking at the Terms and Conditions section on Gavelsnipe's website, I see the following:

Notice: GavelSnipe is affiliated with Heritage Auctions (HA). HA invested in GavelSnipe as a third party start-up. About 18 months later when its start-up funding ran out, HA commenced funding its operating costs rather than letting it cease its services. Many of HA's clients were using GavelSnipe to place their eBay and HA bids. HA felt it unfair to its clientele and other subscribers to discontinue the system. The system is operated on its own dedicated secure servers by an outside contractor, with occasional part time software maintenance by one internal programmer. Neither HA nor its owners or specialists/experts have access to any sniped bid amounts until after those bids are actually executed by GavelSnipe.

I have used Gavelsnipe on EBay for years, pretty much since day one.  I recently switched to Gixen and it’s been working great.  They don’t like the fact that I set my bids at 2 seconds, but the system hasn’t failed me once yet.

RIP Gavelsnipe.

Now that Heritage have, or will have, removed the timed bidding, and we're back to extended time bidding, does anyone think Gavelsnipe will be reviewed and sorted?

So if still good for Heritage, can some attention be paid towards sorting Gavelsnipe for eBay?

Have sent numerous mails to the support link and address, nada in return.

Here is what I am told concerning EBay.
Gavelsnipe is in the process of moving to a multi-IP solution so that eBay will be less likely to block bidders.  Gavelsnipe currently snipes from one server with one IP.  If there’s too much traffic to eBay from that server, so they started blocking logins for a period of time.
Most of the issues have gone away with current setup.
Looks like looks like 3 out of 662 bids missed last week due to the issue – so that is 99.5% success rate.

Many thanks.

Please do let us know when up and running.

Must admit, I wasn't aware of the one server set up.  The other sniping site mentioned above has failover in place.

All the best.
