Title: Tob's Posters
Post by: Hicks77 on March 13, 2019, 11:24:03 AM
I don't know if this site has been referenced yet; I did search on APF but nothing concrete came up.
Either way, http://filmposteraddict.com (http://filmposteraddict.com) is a great site.

Maybe the person who runs it is a member here as he/she does link to APF in their links section.

If you are out there... awesome site!

That's my site :) Thanks for the kind words! Out of interest, how did you stumble upon it? I don't know much about websites or the internet, but decided to build a site as a quick reference for my collection and have quite enjoyed it...cataloging and organising everything is quite cathartic, although it has taken a long time. Apologies for the dreadful photos too!

I have a backlog of about 150 posters to add to it that I'm working through at the moment (including about 40 various Star Wars posters), then I have to go through and try and fix some of the many errors I keep noticing!

Awesome site, Tob.

Your photos all look fantastic and what I also love is how when you hover your cursor over the poster image, all of the info about the film, poster size, director appear as that second layer, then disappear when you move on to the next poster.

As well as one click on each poster giving the viewer a super size image.

You say you dont know much about website building...I would NEVER have guessed that, from looking at yours.... not in the least.

GREAT job!!!  thumbsup.gif clap clap clap

What site software /layout did you use to create your site?

Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the nice words.

My website skills are poor! I hired a developer from India using the Freelancer website - he did all the legwork! I wanted the gallery to look specifically as it does, mainly because I liked to see the various designs for a film and how prints v original posters can look when grouped together, but this caused a lot of work for him as most of the plug-in galleries available appear to justify images vertically instead of horizontally so he had to do some customization. Then I was conscious about how many images to have on a page and the quality of those images due to the time it might take to load a page. I think he did a good job though and the search works pretty quickly too (although I haven't figured out how to do multiple search terms!). The admin interface is basic enough that I can add/edit images in the gallery easily enough.

PS - the site is built on a Wordpress template, but the gallery is a custom plug in.

Hey Tob, I was just browsing some Alien posters on Google and one them linked to your site.  Lucky me!
You sure have a ton of Japanese posters; do you live or have you lived in Japan?

You're welcome, Tob!

Its a great design and layout.

Have only so many images on a page, then going to the next page is a great way to do it, vs having one long continuous scroll downward, like some templates are set up to do.

Plus the white background and color font you used for the title make it inviting and friendly. AND all of the images load very fast, too.

Your guy and you did a great job in its design, layout and, as I said, your photos are sharp, well lit and in focus, which, as we all know is KEY!   :D

Thanks Jeff! I think my photos are pretty grotty though...the good ones you see are probably where EMP have sent me their nice image file as I won an auction from them! I'm glad you like the layout and that the images are loading well for you too...I'm happy with the developer's work.

Hey Tob, I was just browsing some Alien posters on Google and one them linked to your site.  Lucky me!
You sure have a ton of Japanese posters; do you live or have you lived in Japan?

I keep meaning to update the information for that Giger exhibition poster to make it clear it's not a poster for Alien (despite having an Xeno on it).

I have visited Japan, but have never lived there. I live in the UK. I've just always liked the design/style of Japanese posters from when I first started collecting posters, so over time seem to have accumulated a lot of them. I think my collection is roughly split into 25% quads, 25% one sheets, 25% Japanese posters, 15% prints and 10% posters from other countries.

Call me jaded, but not a lot impresses me these days.  One thing that does, though, is someone who puts time and effort into a hobby, any hobby, in order to promote it and make it grow.  Your website does that, and I applaud it.  Very nicely done.  Plus, I know from talking to you that you're one of the good guys, so there is that.

There's this thread here...from way back in 2012, with some members' site links:

Great collection and great site!

The only problem is there are TOO MANY POSTERS! I am still stuck at the beginning of the alphabet...  ;D

What if you had a feature where we press a button and get to see 20 random posters from the collection? I could imagine pressing refresh on that all day!
Title: Re: Film Poster Addict website
Post by: Tob on March 15, 2019, 12:34:32 PM
Thanks rumble!!  :)

Hehe, yeah, I found it tricky to find the compromise between having enough images on a page that it loads quickly, but not giving someone a sore finger having to click to the next page so much as only a few images loaded at once. That's a nice idea about the random poster generator, I like that.

Another way is to just use the search to break it down a bit...so for example, by format (e.g. Quad or Japanese B1), by director, by actor, by film year or by film decade ('197' should bring up posters for films from the 1970s for example). I tried to add more tags, but I think 'Horror', 'James Bond', 'Disney', 'Marvel', 'Studio Ghibli', 'Superhero' and 'Animation' might be the only ones where I was consistent and didn't miss too many entries!

I just come across your site Tob as I have been out of the country since March so not really been checking the site much, but saw the thread when doing a catch session tonight.

Great site - exactly what I need to mine. I have been wanting to do a site for my collection which is continually growing but I never have the time. Never thought of hiring someone in India to do it. Is that a cheap pay of doing things. Would be interested to know how that works.

Some really great posters (not looked through all yet as it takes time). Interested to know about a couple of posters that I haven't seen the versions of before.

What country is the AMELIE  36 x 24 landscape poster from?

And the one that your site opens on uk Apocalypse Now - what country is it from on. - I seen it is a screen print - who's the artist?

Well done on a fab site.

Thanks John! I appreciate your nice words. It used to be that if you tapped on an image, it would pull up some information on the poster, but that seems to be broken on mobile devices (it just opens the bigger image). If you roll over the thumbnails on desktop, it should give you info.

The 36 x 24" landscape poster for Amelie is a print by Ise Ananphada:
https://expressobeans.com/public/detail.php/216181

The Apocalypse Now on the home page is 2-sheet poster from Thailand with art by Tongdee Panumas.

Hiring a developer from India can be cheaper than using a Western based one, but when you hire someone I guess it can be a slightly tricky process if you have specific functionality in mind (making sure your requirements are good at the start, the testing and feedback loop etc). There are some good DIY web building websites that might be worth a try - they have a nice user interface that mean you can drag and drop elements to build, so you don't need to be technical or know anything about coding. Lots of features are free too, so I think it'd be a good and cheap way to get going. Give one of them a try!

I've moved this thread to 'Show Us Your Collection!' and will make a post when I add new stuff (which is very infrequently!).

I just added around 100 new posters to my site. If you go to the 'Gallery' page and search for the term 'Feb20' it should pull up the new ones. The site seems to work better on a desktop browser (as you can hover the cursor over the poster thumbnail to see some information on each one), for some reason the info doesn't show when browsing on a mobile device. Anyway, thanks for having a look!

Hi John! Thanks for taking a look! Yes, I am partial to Japanese posters. I think I got hooked on them early into collecting because the designs were always so different to the UK/US posters I was used to seeing. I like to collect multiple posters for a title, so find it interesting to compare the designs/art between UK v US v Japan v Thai v Alternative Prints etc.

Only need to look at your website to see many classic films have some really cool art on the Jap versions, I've always liked the look of many of them, only reason I've not got into them myself is I'm not really that up on them in terms of knowledge so would not be to sure of what I was buying.

Currently I only have a single Jap poster in my collection which is for Licence To Kill :-[ I like the film a lot so happy to have the poster but it's a very basic poster in terms of the artwork compared to some of the fantastic ones on your website thumbsup.gif

Great selection as usual. I really enjoy the variety in your collection but I'm also drawn to the JP posters. I think because the artwork is different and the challenge to be had in finding them is fun, I always enjoy seeing them. Another reason I like your JP Goonies poster is because it's a Video poster. I've always had a soft spot for Video posters and I know how hard it can be to find them, especially Japanese ones.  notworthy.gif

Thanks John. I was lucky to get into the group from the start. His art is a nice match for the films, they're a nice set.

And what is your secret for such awesome, auction-quality photos of your stuff?

The nice photos are the ones I win from emovieposter I think! They email me the photos over when I win an auction. The rest I take myself, but I think they're rubbish! My method is I use a white board and some of those strong, little magnets to hold the poster down. I think take a photo, then adjust it in Lightroom (to straighten and crop it and then to fix the white balance). The lighting is poor in the room where I take them and I usually shrink the image so the pages on the website load quicker, so they're not the sharpest photos unfortunately.

A couple of years ago, the little website I built got hacked and ruined, so I had to delete it and have spent the last few months slowly re-building it. The tricky part was the gallery - the old site had a nice, custom gallery that a developer built for me, which was really fast and was searchable. Unfortunately, I lost contact with him so I had to use an off the shelf gallery plug in and rebuild it manually, which is what took so long (entering metadata for all the posters). The new gallery displays nicely, but it's slow to load...I don't think there's much I can do to improve that unfortunately, so apologies in advance if you decide to browse. I also can't figure out how to get the search working correctly, so for now, I have added tags instead.

Anyway, now that the site is working, I can start going through all the posters/prints that I have collected from the last 2 or 3 years, to take photos and add them. First batch of ~100 can be seen here (http://www.filmposteraddict.com/gallery/?envira-tag=jan23)...mainly prints in this update and nothing too exciting. If you're on a computer, you can hover over the thumbnails for information.

Title: Re: Tob's Posters
Post by: Tob on February 02, 2023, 12:46:25 PM
Thanks Skyjackers! My photo quality seems to vary wildly...sometimes it's nice and clear, sometimes it's awful! I bought a large whiteboard and some of those small, strong magnets to secure the poster - I used to use a DSLR to take snaps, but now I just use my phone, it seems to do a better job. I stand over the whiteboard (which is flat on the floor) and take the photo. I then straighten and crop the images, then adjust the white balance as I have no special lighting and it's usually to warm/yellow with the lighting in my room.

Thanks for taking the time to look, T. I appreciate the kind words. I wish I still had connections in Japan...long gone unfortunately. The last few years, I mainly acquire from hunting around auction sites. Seems to be getting harder though, lots of dealers, I keep getting outbid and then seeing stuff listed for huge money elsewhere. Frustrating! But all part of the hobby I suppose.

Thanks a lot, bud! I've always liked that design for Challenge in the Snow/Grenoble, it really captures the feeling of speed so well. I got lucky with the timing on that 2001, bought it quite a few years ago when it was pretty cheap. Yes, that Breakfast at Tiffanies is a re-release...I'm not sure of the year? I have only seen it pop up a couple of times, I've always liked that image of Hepburn

I've got a few of them screen prints but have been selling my screen prints of over the last 5 years only got around 50 or 60 left now. if you can sell me the Mann Goldfinger and and the Devil Rides Out quad for a start!!  :) :D.   I need a site for my posters, I just have a few pages in Pinterest to start with but its not the best site to manage your collection on. Wish there was a ready made wordpress site or something for poster addicts!! Maybe you should start a poster site business?!

That Thai 2-sheet for ‘Apocalypse Now’ is amazing. never seen that before.

Tob, how do you manage to photograph your posters so perfectly?

I added a few new ones to my site...around 175ish in total.

If you view on a desktop computer, you can hover over the images for more information. There's some weird bug where if you click the image, it enlarges a different image, but you can navigate using the left and right arrows to scroll through the larger images to find the one you want. Sorry it's a bit slow to load.

Some really really good stuff there, Tob!  Congrats.

FYI, when you click on a poster, it shows another.

Impressive haul there.  From the new prints to originals for some of the older classics (older as in 1990s  :P ) a lot of great stuff.

Thanks Neo and T! Appreciate you looking and the kind words.

Thanks T - it's a bug in the gallery plug-in unfortunately. When the large image comes up, you can scroll through using the arrow keys, but I'll have to wait for them to release an update to fix it properly.

Fantastic selection, Tob! Really impressive. I’ve not seen that Annihilation print before, just beautiful.

Thank you! A shame Annihilation didn't get many theatrical posters (I think it was a Netflix release), the film has some interesting imagery that would have made for good posters

Yeah, something wrong with the envira when you use envira-tag in the url - oct23    (envira-tags-min.js)
Note that if no envira-tag in the url, it works well!

Very nice site! Love the images

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I noticed the same - when you use any of the tags so the gallery plug-in creates a subset of images, it seems to display the large images in order I uploaded them, rather than the order of the tiled gallery view. A bit annoying, but at least the main gallery without tags seems to work.

Exactly Tob, there is an issue with the order numbering between the small and large picture, when using "envira-tag".
Yep, the main gallery works great; so just avoid "oct23" and other tags  thumbsup.gif

I missed your new additions. Yowza! I was especially thrilled with THE HEREDITARY poster. I'd not seen that one before. Stunning collection though. Keep it going!

I found some time to add 130 or so new posters to my website. Nothing too exciting, but if you'd like to take a look, here is a link to the new arrivals area: http://www.filmposteraddict.com/new-arrivals/

Or you can see them all using this link (http://www.filmposteraddict.com/gallery/?envira-tag=mar24)

The site works better on a desktop where you can hover over a thumbnail to see information on the poster. The bug still exists where clicking a thumbnail takes you to an incorrect image, but you can scroll through the larger images to find the one you were interested in.

Too many great ones to mention but the Kill Bill horizontal style seems like a big win, as well as some of the other Japanese stuff including Spring Breakers, etc.  I hadn't seen the Australian version of Song to Song.  The Star Wars horizontal print is interesting - much different visual than most SW stuff.  Congrats  cool1

What a great, great, great collection.  So many rarities and impossible to find posters.  All those B1s, man, I wish I knew how to navigate Yahoo Japan.  Sadly, I can only get what's already in the US.  And a beautiful website to boot.  This is what collecting is all about.

Thanks Neo! Star Wars prints are by the artist Guy Stauber (https://www.instagram.com/guystauber/). As they're quad sized, they're quite striking in person with nice, bold colours.

Thank you, T. I'm in awe of your collection and website, so it means a lot that you took the time to have a browse and enjoyed some of the posters I've collected.

Yeah the full quad size is nice and the full set for all 3 of the original Star Wars series.

I didn't notice the Thai T2.  I've never seen it before.  Very cool.   happy1
