Title: UK Quads - Any era, any type
Post by: poster art on January 13, 2019, 11:26:30 AM
Can't believe there was no thread for UK Quads (other than the horror one) so I thought I would start on. I can imagine this may well be a popular thread as there are so many types of quads (genres decades etc), I was thinking about doing various threads for decades but well, it may well be too much so for now lets do just the one for everything - unless anyone wants thinks different. So will do the first post of quads that I have not posted elsewhere.

Most of my quads tend to be from mids 1970s/1980s onwards and mainly art house or independent films (but not entirely). I think the year of the quad would be interesting to quote (if available). Look forward to seeing this thread grow. Anything welcome to be posted here as long as it's a UK Quad.

Quads are pretty much as prolific as US OS, (not meaning older vintage quads, of course), so that may also be whey there wasnt one started (as opposed to posters from other countries).

Nice start.... and look forward to seeing more, for sure.  thumbsup.gif

Might be a bit too generic a thread title for it to have any real legs.  Might just as well have said - Poster!

Anyway, probably cross pollination to an otherwise more focused thread notwithstanding, the below.  Not sure how often this one has been seen.

I see you point but probably too late to change it now unless a mod can do it?

If you want it changed to something more specific, send me a PM with your change and we can do that for you. ;)

Maybe divide it between vintage quads and modern quads.  The problem is that most newer quads just mimic their US counterpart.  And the old ones, at least to me but I could be wrong, are hard to get and more a niche collection.  I don't know if they have a lot of appeal to most, no colors, very simple.  Again, personal appreciation.  I'm much more into French and Italian.  Paul would probably crucify me.  Hahaha!

Paul who? Hah. I dont recall any (recent) posts from anyone named Paul. ;) (commenting, too, for any newbies that have no idea who is being referenced).

I best start building that Cross, I can feel a crucifixion coming on...  ;)  ( Plus, may get some of our Quads back out of his collection.. ;D)

I've not posted much in recent times, since the photo bucket incident. It certainly was a nightmare... And spoilt the whole enjoyment of the forum, not being able to post, and losing all the pics I had posted. This was also followed by my computer crashing, and losing about 3000+ photos..  moron1

As for Quads, most pre-50's are a non-existent, due to the war, and paper drives that went on into the 50's, so a lot of our treasures no longer exist. However there are some really nice Quads still out there (even some modern ones). I think every country has it's good and bad posters.

I'll see if I can get some in here now we have a Quads only section...

Wow Paul, those early ones are nice. Especially the Jane Russell Underwater one. Nice....

I don't have that old, just the odd one.

I got this quite recently which I think is from 1960 (not 100per cent certain). But it's one of the few ones I got older than the 70s. May we should have two seperate threads one for 70s plus and one pre - 70s. What do you think?

Well, those are obviously nice, Paul, but it’s not the norm.  I feel like sometimes quad can look
Like daybills, very simple, few colors.  Not as bad as daybills, you can at least recognize the actors, but not very elaborate.

I think it all depends on time period, and what area you collect. I'd guess 40% of my collection are like these, the rest are poor, or modern, but part of the love of Quads is how scarce they are, not many printed anyway, and the further you go back in time, not many if any have survived, and I like that too...   I have a fair few that so far are only known copies, may not be the best artwork, but as you know, I'm more into the films than art, so works well for me.

Thanks!  Yes, my quads are all from the original release of these films, except maybe the Beast from Haunted Cave/Wasp Woman double bill which might be for a slightly later release in the early 1960s (Wasp Woman was also paired on another double bill quad with The Fly, and I'm not sure which of those 2 is considered the original release for that film in the UK).

great to see another Quad thread popping up & some lovely stuff from all & i will obviously never tire of seeing Pauls collection.
totally agree that "each to their own" collecting wise but ive always found the colours & detail particularly of the older quads to be fantastic. There are always going to be some duds but no more than any poster format. The fact they are harder to find just makes the chase more challenging.
heres a few of my fav older quads:

Some memories there for me.  But to be frank, much that is new to me.

Thanks.

I have about a half dozen quads I've acquired haphazardly over the years. But 'Kes' is the only quad I actively sought out. Kes is just such a fine film so having the country of origin poster appeals to me, not to mention that none of the Kes paper I've seen from other countries comes close to the quad.

I bought the Tron quad randomly from a Craiglist person from whom I was buying something completely unrelated.

I do like the fact that it is considerably different from the US poster.

Hi Deke, I sure enjoyed the books and films about a boy and his hawk growing up.  Cool that you got Kes. As a boy, I really liked the story "My Side of the Mountain" where a boy trains a falcon to hunt.  Okie

Nice Tron and looks really good condition as well. Was that from a UK seller or US? Never thought of Craig's list for posters.

Neither had I.

But, further to the above and, suitably inspired, I tried to look at the site and couldn't make head nor tail of the place.  Everything seems to be ordered through geographical location.  Which makes putting in one world wide search for anything almost impossible.

I can't stand that film. Brynner didn't like Peckinpah (who was supposed to direct) and his script, the result is this terrible film. Funny, just two days ago I wrote about it, I'm doing a 62-page magazine these days on WILD BUNCH for Cinema Retro Magazine (out this summer).
But the film has its raison d'être: to quote Sam "I used everything they threw out of my script for THE WILD BUNCH..."

Really like the original Nightmare Quad. Great quads too Tob. Always loved both the films and the posters for 'The Lost Boys' and 'Big Trouble in Little China', takes me back to my childhood! I don't have many quads left now but I always liked these:

Great Hitchcock posters. The Birds "is" coming doesn't sound right somehow but it must be grammatically correct.

Liked the quad from earlier in the thread for The American Friend as well. Bruno Ganz was always watchable, sad about his passing recently.

Never seen the Birds advance.

Curious that in the advance it was 'The birds is coming'.  A capital B would have corrected the syntax, 'The Birds is coming'.  Otherwise it looks like it should read 'The birds are coming.'

i had planned on having a Hitchcock viewing binge over winter but never got round to it but seeing those quads has got me planning again haha.
does anybody know if the Birds (advance) image was available as a trade ad?

There is a trade ad on ebay with a title "The birds is flying high!" - reporting on the first week's box office takings at the Odeon Leicester Square where the film premiered in the UK. I'm thinking mine was perhaps a teaser quad used exclusively for Odeon.

^ thanks. i have a double page Birds trade ad from Kinematograph Weekly July 25 1963 (type attached by gum, so if you find the mag there is no guarantee the poster will be there..). the ad uses the well known artwork but is on a yellow background like that advance (also says 'Rank release October 13th book it now')

^ Birds UK premiere was 10 September 1963, the ad showing takings from initial run uses same font for "the birds are flying high" that is used on the advance poster strongly suggesting the advance was used at odeon, leicester sq for that premiere (my trade ad from july doesn't use that font - or have poor syntax!). this is all a guess on my part of course ;D would this have been shown all over uk? if so where are they. anyone seen more copies? maybe school teachers forced a recall ;D

I have a Double Crown for this, even more scarce than the Quad, but there will have been other showings around the country at this time, so I don't think the posters are exclusive to the Odeon, just stating what the takings are there on that poster, Leicester Square Odeon is more of an industry Yardstick...
Title: Re: UK Quads - Any era, any type
Post by: marklawd on March 05, 2019, 01:55:49 PM
It's just a personal theory Paul. The marketing campaign in the UK was very London-centric with photocalls in Trafalgar Square (for pigeons), Tower of London (for ravens) and the London Zoo aviary. Given the scarcity of this teaser and that trade-ad I was thinking there may have been an exclusive initial run at the Odeon.

"The birds is coming" was a deliberate marketing slogan Hitchcock thought up, to get people talking.

One thing about British posters, there was a lot made that look amazing using a Blacklight.

I think UK  Cinemas missed a trick here....
