Good thread!
Which do you use for the backings Mel? Regular economy frame or archival backing?

Hi Sundance and Big Mike, I like Sue's archival products.  I'm very happy with her frames. For large size posters I like nonglare and her wider frame option.   Okie

So I'm looking to buy frames and not spend too much, the economy frame seems nice but no acid free backing? Will this be a big problem? Should I only use acid free backing for the more expensive posters?

I recommend the archival board Sue sells at Hollywood Poster Frames, Joe. It has worked great for me. Okie.

Okay I saw those frames but they are like $30 more for the archival backing. Does The OP use the economy frame without acid free backing? Seems like he implies he buys the economy frames.

Dont forget to check out SpotlightDisplays frames, too.

And the company owner, Robert, is a member here. And he's a good guy, too!  thumbsup.gif

I use SpotlightDisplays frames and have been very pleased.  I do mount my poster between two sheets of the “plastic.”  Is that bad?

Joe, you could buy Sue's frames (Sue owns HPFs) and buy your archival foam core at Michael's or similar art supply store, if it's cheaper where you live.  Then, cut the foam core to size yourself or have the store cut it to size. However, Sue's $30 might not seem so much, if you have to drive to the store, spend your time, and then cut the board etc. You could also try to order on line, though really watch those shipping costs for large archival foam core. I've bought and cut archival foam core for nice used frames I've found.  I really like Sue's sturdy frames for large size posters bigger than half sheets, especially ones I move around and/or are likely to go out for display at conventions, galleries etc.  I also like Robert's frames (Spotlight Displays) like Jeff and Matt mentioned.  I add framing wire to Robert's frames by drilling new holes and adding eyelet screws to attach framing wire so I don't have to mount the frames to the wall.   Robert's frames in large sizes are a great price, though I also need to add extra aluminum supports to the back (for one sheet size and larger) for any posters I want to move around to a different location or "take on the road" as I'm adapting Spotlight frames great price to my own use pattern.  If you mount Spotlight frames to the wall like Robert's great design intends, you will not need to do as I do. Also, Spotlight frames for me are cool because of how easily you can change posters out and store multiple posters together in on frame.  To me, both Sue and Robert have great products and I readily recommend both of them.   Hope my personal use info above helps you.  Okie

Hi Matt, I have had great luck for several years doing exactly what you said with Spotlight frames.  You mainly don't want your posters and actual glass touching each other.  Interestingly,  Sue at HPFs, whose frames are the original subject of this thread, has an excellent discussion of this topic on glass on her website. https://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=protect_investment

My best, Okie

Great info!I'll check those out.. My next question would be is it bad to buy a regular frame at Michael's or hobby lobby ? Is all plexiglass UV filtered? Since it's the holidays people are buying me regular frames at these stores.. how could I find use for these frames if they are not good for posters?

Joe, I personally wouldn't recommend a frame off the shelf site unseen from one of the box art supply stores to use to frame posters of value.  Too many variables and questionable materials used in my opinion.  I would suggest family get you gift certificates from Sue or Robert for frames for your valuable posters.  Okie

Another factor is that both Sue and Robert will adjust sizes to precisely fit the poster.  Most of the more valuable older stock I've bought has seemed to be slightly oversized by 1/4 to 1/2 inch.  Especially true for linenbacked material.

I mean, I'm spending over $2k on that Snow White half sheet.  Why am I going to risk destroying it over a lousy $30 for proper backing.

Joe, if you have some frames, that are correct in size, and are of a more solid construction, but came with plain cardboard backings, it is certainly MUCH cheaper and cost effective to go and purchase a sheet of acid-free foam core and cut it to the size of your frame.

Foam core is easy to cut, with a sharp, exacto-type blade and a straight edge.

That way, you're able to use the frames (and if they already have UV-plexi, that's another plus), rather than buying new, all the way around.

Again, just another option to consider. :)

Thanks for the info, I'll keep you posted on what I decide to do.
