Nice pick up Jeff!
-
That's great Jeff congrats!
-
Thanks, gents.
-
That is beauteous, Jeff!!
-
Whoa very nice!
-
Congrats Jeff!
-
Thanks again, all. The imagery is simple, and considering it's based on the artwork used on some first & earlier re-release stuff (like the '38rr 3-sheet), I'm very happy to have tripped across it, that's for sure. :)
-
Go, Monstruo, Go! Great fun, Jeff! Okie
-
Good on you Jeff
-
Has been a long while. But just got this in the mail today!

That poster makes a point, Mike. ;D
Congrats on the pickup.
-
Nice grab, Jeff. Hard to go wrong with any kind of Frankie.
Awesome, Mike! A classic from the 80's for sure. I still remember the first time I saw the 'twist' at the end as a kid... thumbsup.gif

To piggyback off of Jeff's, Frankenstein.... Here are two Mondo prints that I grabbed not long ago, both featuring art by Francesco Francavilla, Dracula & Frankenstein. They'll go well on the office walls with my Creature From The Black Lagoon Mondo print by Stan and Vince from a few years ago (also below). I'm not a huge Mondo buyer, but I couldn't pass on these classic looking Universals.

Nice pickups, there, Chris. cool1
And a little ironic that you picked up that one Frankie print, as I happened to mention it in another thread about a week ago, too, when I came across an image of it, randomly online, somewhere:
http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,12860.msg231202.html#msg231202
I think artist Francavilla did an AMAZING job on it, combining elements of both old and new styles. It shines, Big Time!
-
Thanks, Jeff!
You're right for sure... the combination of the old style and the color contrast really make it 'pop.' The b&w version is not quite effective.

Nice ones this month! I like that Dam Busters and the two Franks (Mondo and Argentinean re-release) especially.
Here are 3 I got relatively recently.
Bone Tomahawk US one sheet - this is signed by the director on the back (on a sticker!). Really enjoyed this film. Many thanks to Jason for receiving a gazillion posters for me, storing them, then posting them all over in a jumbo tube, including this one
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/884/40661504744_ce8bdbab7b_b.jpg)
Wonder Woman Japanese B1 - think this was my fave superhero film of the last couple of years (along with Thor Ragnarok)
The Shape of Water Japanese B1 - this is double sided and on card stock, very nice print quality. Loved the film and the art by James Jean on this poster
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/800/41332657332_0471a7de29_b.jpg)

Looks to be artist signed in the lower left area in yellow? If so, what's the name?

I wasn't even aware of the Dam Busters re-release. Looks quite the business. Very nice.
It's a big thing in the UK, most cinemas seem to be showing it on the day and there is a big thing on a the Royal Albert Hall with orchestra and discussion etc being beamed out to cinemas country wide. Beautiful looking restoration (4k) by the look of the trailer.
FYI https://www.thedambusters75.co.uk/royal-albert-hall-event/ (https://www.thedambusters75.co.uk/royal-albert-hall-event/)
Trailer. https://youtu.be/cvYjIKNgOKw (https://youtu.be/cvYjIKNgOKw)
Sub note: Quite a few cinemas got the screening date wrong - someone miss printed the info somewhere and quite a few (including the one I work in) advertised it as 17th March. Only to realise on the day when the print hadn't turned up that it was wrong.. !!!
Unfortunately I am going be out of the country which I am really bummed about as wanted to see it.
Poster is really great but I have done quite a lot of research trying to find out who the artist is but I cannot find that info anywhere. If anyone knows please post here.

the Dracula & Frankenstein prints are fabulous. I couldn't get one when they came out
some other nice pieces posted
this piece I've actually had for some time, but never had it up, so I could never get a picture.

Great Cyd Charisse, Richie!!! Wowie, wow!!! Okie
thanks. She is almost life size. I really only have the one wall to put her on and it was busy.
At the Hard Rock, they have another style, that has giant stacks of gold dollar coins instead of dice
Love the Orphée, too, Rich.
Such a great poster & image!
I've posted that before, with the other style next to it. I prefer this style, to one of my favorite films.
When T saw me post the two, he went out and searched for them himself & I believe he snagged folded copies in sharp shape sometime last year

I've seen less than 5 of either style, but for all I know if you go to France for a poster show, every dealer could have one on the table

The thrill of the discovery, I guess, when possibly least expected.

Finally received the very rare and unusual Spy 1 Sheet from HA, about which words have been spoken in the Bond thread.
And, it really is mint (aside from one very minimal tear bottom left). And bloody rare. Both EMP and HA have never sold one before this.

Really dig the art! How long have you been searching for that particular poster?
Congratulations on the grab!

Couldn’t find a signature on this one Jeff. It might be Kwow by the style but I’m not sure.

Okie I’ve always wondered how comedy did in Thailand. The translations are difficult with the language. Putting the Thai language into Google translate is a comedy fest in itself!

Thanks for checking, tho, too.

In short, was never in the 30 years of increasing collecting knowledge, aware of it until both the knowledge and the availability came along in the space of one convenient month. All the detail in the link though.

Hi all, long time...I promised '18 would be my year I'd start contributing, guess there's still some time to meet that goal.
This is one of my first 'non-poster' items I purchased in a long time. Obtained from Potter & Potter auction this past weekend. One reason I liked this auction is descriptions for many items had history, this one came from Julian's auction in CA purchased in 2004. Wish more of the auction houses would do this.
Anyway, glad to jump back in with you all, for a small group, you all put together the best poster forum site out there. Peace.

What are the other printed items in this frame? Are they from magazines? The one looks like a still of some kind (the more full shark pic). I see the one that says its a 'prop tooth' from one of the camera used sharks. Just curious. Was there any documentation verifying that the tooth is actually what it says it is?
But all very cool in this framed archive.
-
handbill, tooth, local cinema flyer

Rich summed it up well...or better then I could until I receive the item...I decided to trust the purchase being it originated from Julian's and it's shown online from the auction in '04.

I remember a few of these going around during that time, unframed. I'll reach out to Julian's once I receive the item to see if they can supply any addt'l info. Don't know much about prop world but believe there's individuals out there who do research & certify these types of collectibles.

Just received my Revenge of the Creature Italian 2P from HA signature auction from this past weekend. I love it, it looks great in person, great condition for such a large poster and the colors are really vibrant. Definitely one of the better paper for this title.

That's no way to treat Lizabeth Scott! Really intense vice poster you got there, Matthew! Wow! Okie
-
Ben,
That think is sharp man. The colors look top notch. You going to flatten and back it or leave as is?
Congrats on it!
-
Thanks Chris, the colors are quite vivid indeed. To answer your question, I'm going to keep the poster as it is. I'm generally not a fan of linenbacking and would only consider doing this as an absolute last resort (i.e., only if the paper was completely in tatters, which is obviously not the case here). I really don't mind when folds are clearly visible on a poster: to me this is just part of the history of the piece (since the vast majority of older paper was folded), and I never feel the need to correct such "flaws".

I think it rivals the best paper from any of the Creature films! It's in your face action, too! Thanks for the picture now that you have received it, Antoine! Okie

-
Ben,
Couldn't agree with you more. I really love the clean, complete look of classic posters that have been backed and presented well, but like you am a sucker for the story an untouched poster tells whether you know it's pedigree or one that you fictionalize in your own imagination.

ugh...yes the question that will haunt all of us to the end-of-time. To back..or not to back, and yes, I, as well as many of you, am always conflicted, as well.
On one side you look at it as keeping a poster as pure as it was intended to be coming off the press, on the other, when you have an image this good, you don't want heavy folds or anything else distracting from viewing the image.
I know many others of you are purists out there and those who accept and/or prefer backing completely understand this.
I guess for me the litmus test is based on the intent of what to do with a classic poster that's so displayable. If it's going to be displayed in an area where lots of individuals will view it ( and for a poster of this caliber, it easy to see why someone would consider), it might be best to back it to remove what non-collectors see as a distraction or flaw. If it's kept somewhere more personal or not displayed, there wouldn't be any good reason to ever mount this in any way, shape or form.
I rarely ever back a poster if it comes folded, but I don't have any hesitation to purchase one that is already backed. In many cases it's hard enough to find a specific poster you want, then often having to be the high bidder to come up with it. Deciding I only want one backed or never backed only complicates the objective of owning that item.
Ben,
Couldn't agree with you more. I really love the clean, complete look of classic posters that have been backed and presented well, but like you am a sucker for the story an untouched poster tells whether you know it's pedigree or one that you fictionalize in your own imagination.
-
it might be best to back it to remove what non-collectors see as a distraction or flaw.
who cares what a non-collector thinks on this subject? They don't have any financial interest in the hobby, so why should they be any consideration?

Exactly.
Do what you, the owner & collector alone, want to do, and present / display it in whatever way makes you the most happy or satisfied - regardless of what someone else might think.
But as the number of "back or not to back" threads or posts up in the Restoration board show... the debate rages on. At the end of the day, I think it boils down to personal preference.

Stephen, you make some valid arguments that are worth being addressed. To answer your question, my plan is to frame this poster as it is and display it in my home. However, even if I was planning on hanging it somewhere where a lot of people could view it, I don't really care if non-collectors consider the folds to be a distraction/flaw. Honestly, I find the notion that folds are problematic rather odd, as they really don't present themselves in such a light to me. I also think that restoration of any kind (including linebacking) should always be avoided unless the integrity of the poster itself is at great risk of destruction.
I do agree with your point about the necessity of sometimes buying a poster that is backed, as it can be difficult to find a particularly rare poster in folded condition. I used to have a strict rule about not buying any paper that was linenbacked, but I have relaxed that rule a few years ago so that I could finally get my hands on a particular desirable item. I now occasionally buy backed paper but only for larger sizes, as I feel that having the backing can be helpful in keeping a large poster together thus making it easier to display than a folded copy that comes in 2 or more pieces, but to this day I still refuse to buy any OS that are backed. For example, several years ago I purchased a backed 6-sheet for Revenge of the Creature as I couldn't find a folded copy, and the fact that it was on linen made it a lot easier to display when I had it on my walls.
When I do decide to buy a poster that's been backed, I always try to find an example that hasn't been retouched, or where the folds haven't been airbrushed. Coming from a museum background, I have a very conservative approach to restoration and will always favor an unretouched poster with visible defaults to a flawless version that's been tempered with. That's just my opinion and I realize a lot of folks might disagree, but since I collect mostly for myself, I feel that I'm entitled to my preferences.

Forgive the very novice question, but I have wondered about this. I do not own anything backed and likely would never back a poster. Once a poster is backed, would it ever be possible to "unback" the poster without damaging it?
Thanks,
Matthew

There has been some discussion/questions about this from a couple threads, up in the Restoration board, too:

Haven’t bough very many posters recently but this Romanian for the Italian caper 7 Golden Men really caught my eye!

Gorgeous design. Congrats!

Very unusual.

Very cool Romanian poster indeed.

Well done L.E.!

Thanks! I actually have quite a collection of posters for this film and its equally fun sequel, but apart from this one they all seem to focus on the female criminal's various tight-fitting body suits... not that I complain!
-
Awesome art, Rumble.
I know nothing about the film, but that design's right up my alley. Congrats.

Really nice looking poster, there, rumble.
It's an eye catcher, for sure!!

Seven Golden Men and Seven Golden Men Strike Again are a pair of Italian movies from the 60s, centrering on intricate heists to steal lots of gold (obviously!) One member of the gang is actually female and has a penchant for dressing in extravagant clothes... I’ve got the Japanese DVDs and as I said quite a big collection. This is the Spanish poster (not my photo but I actually own it in two sizes!) that communicates the general gist of most of the posters - sexy and fun!

2 recent acquisitions for my Hammer collection: an Italian 2P for Two Faces of Dr Jekyll (art by Martinati) and an Italian 1P for Plague of the Zombies.

Nice pair there, Ben. cheers
Ive always really liked Martinati's style, too, as well as his great use of color.
-
yes...very nice - artists from Italy were light years ahead when it came to creating beautiful film posters.
If you want to see another amazing poster by Martinati, check out this 1954 Italian 'Them!' 4-Folio HA auctioned in 08'. Not sure I've seen a 50's sci-fi poster that could compete...

Very sexy poster. Out of interest are the other two sizes that you have the same design exactly and what size are they?

"Every family tree hides a secret" Love the caption on this one - so true. Heard the film is brutal...
Chris, curious, what are you using to hold the poster flat?

no. it's been damaged further bu the restoration process. it can be removed from it's backing, by an expert, but it will never be 'what it was' again.
-
Thanks, MoviePosters.
I've heard it's pretty intense as well. Looks like a "slow burn" horror, which is right up my alley.
My weights are a stack of (4) large stainless steel washers epoxied together.

Very sexy poster. Out of interest are the other two sizes that you have the same design exactly and what size are they?
The picture above is of the Spanish one-sheet, which is 70*100 centimetres. The other one I have from Spain is the same central image but has bigger text - it looks more like an advertising poster than a movie poster. As I recall it is about twice the size of the one-sheet, so more like an Italian duo-foglio.
Which reminds me, the Italian posters for this movie are also very cool - similar style imagery but by other artists!

aka: "glued" together. :)

As a horror fan when I'm not doing the Bond thing, thought it was about time I pulled the trigger on these two (images aren't mine btw):

Where did you find them?

Where did you find them?
A couple of different places mate.
Stumbled across them and thought "Why not?! I haven't bought any horror-related stuff for a while!".
Obviously those images are not from where I purchased the posters.
They are from a couple of websites to just show what they are.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your actual copies when you receive them, too, Adam. thumbsup.gif

It will be a while lol.
Now that my photography setup is finally, well, set up, I have an entire Bond archive to photograph as well as any items for the sales site, which are far more important.

So you haven't taken any pics of any of your Bond material/collection, up to now?

You know I have through past conversations on here and via some of the posters on the reference site (and even Facebook!).
I'm a perfectionist though and I wasn't happy, hence why I purchased a proper lighting setup etc. Still haven't got a full frame camera, but that's no biggy at the moment as I'll be doing the sales stuff first.
