Title: Buy It Nows & Other Earthly Delights
Post by: erik1925 on February 20, 2018, 09:00:45 PM
Unlike the mid auction analysis thread or Post-auction thread, buy it now items are a different breed, since the seller is not running an auction but has it stamped with a set price (and often with a Best Offer option, too, which also be interesting to see, as far as what a seller was willing to take for a poster).

I always thought these items, if discussed, would be better in a separate topic? I'll start with one I just posted in the "Mid-auction" thread. And if this thread should go nowhere and it withers on the vine, we can just merge these items back to the other, where they were.  :)

Looks like the French Bride of Frank 1P that Todd Feiertag was helping the owner find a buyer for, and who was willing to let it go for $30K (after paying $35+K to HA in their July 2017 Sig auction - (https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/horror/the-bride-of-frankenstein-universal-1935-french-grande-465-x-62-joseph-koutachy-artwork/a/7162-86254.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515), got no buyer.

So it has been consigned and is now available here with a BIN of $51,995.00 / obo:

Another BIN for a Universal movie item .

This with a price tag of $7500.00 / obo

A US insert for the flicker, Black Friday (1940), with Karloff & Lugosi teamed up once again. The seller says this is the only copy they are familiar with that has come to auction before. I think it's one fine looking insert, art-wise, too.

And unlike some others who "disclosed/revealed" ebay items, whether they were BINs or auctions with a low opening bid or buy it now price, I wont be posting those kinds of items in this thread.

Things I post here will be posters that have heftier BIN price tags, like the ones above, or things that people like Todd Feiertag or Benito list, as just a couple seller examples.  :)

Heftier BIN to you is a low opening bid to someone else.
Basically it sounds like you are asking to shame dealers who have prices over what someone feels is FMV. Don't we have enough of that going on in the other threads?

These are items found on ebay. Yes the French BoF was consigned to a dealer and now has a higher asking price. But there's no shaming going on, nor was that ever even intended with this thread. I was seeing at as an offshoot of the Mid-auction thread, but looking at more expensive items only.

Prior to this, Ive often posted more pricey posters like the above that had a set price in the mid auction thread, but it didnt really seem the right place since items with BINs or best offer options arent truly auctions.

And since there was more chatter recently about how horror material was doing these days, I thought this could show how some of that material might perform, whether it sold for the BIN or the seller agreed to a best offer.

Thanks, Jeff.  I think it makes for an interesting few months case study for this poster.  It's already having it's own bit of a whirlwind.  Okie

Aren't those two sentences in effect contradicting one another?

If someone can see a BIN as a low opening bid, then where would the shaming be in that?

Anyway, suffice to say, I don't see this thread as that.  Hope it finds its legs.

A hefty BIN and a hefty opening listed bid are different, though if the opening bid figure is very high, it could almost be the same as a 'buy it now' price.

One example that was just posted about (also in the mid auction thread), was for a linen backed US OS for Gilda. The seller had an opening bid of $49,000.00 on the poster. In that case, I bet that had someone placed a bid at that opening number, it would have been like a BIN, too, & very possibly being had for that opening bid price.

As a little follow up - The Gilda poster got no bids before it closed: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GILDA-Style-B-Original-One-Sheet-Movie-Poster-1946-Rita-Hayworth-on-LINEN-/192450284799?hash=item2cceee4cff%3Ag%3A6GYAAOSwfpBaaAgO&nma=true&si=vaCX2z%252BDHoCuxGPr%252F8Wd6O2n99A%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

If listed again, it will be interesting to see if that same opening bid is attached again, or if it re-listed with a set price.

I see these things pop up in my Bond search from time to time.

I am not sure what the Bond connection actually is as the serial number only shows AK47 on it...?!

That said, and when feel so inclined, I write to the sellers declaring that these things are worth at £1m, and good luck with the sale.  Needless to say, there is rarely a reply.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AK-47-Five-Pound-Note-James-Bond-Fav-No-420-Bank-Of-England-Genuine-Serial/183086205161?hash=item2aa0c9c8e9:g:TqoAAOSwa~BYZ4Cm

This one below actually does have 007 in the serial number and just to help the sale along, he pops an image of Bond in Skyfall along side - probably the cementer for all those hovering on the edge of purchase.

This one is a steel...!

I think it came from the recent Ewbanks auction.  I had no idea it is a printers' proof, and to be frank I am still not convinced of that.

However what I am convinced about is its outright tattiness for an outrageous price.

Thoughts?

Well, it is likely if this guy can find a buyer with more money than sense. There's been a glut of Polish posters recently and they are rather an acquired taste. The problem with them is the graphics have a political message you have to be able to read Polish to understand. Otherwise, they're for wrapping fish. $112.50 per poster plus $750. shipping?? Cholera!

The best Polish posters are superb, and worth a decent amount of money. But the valuable ones are all for non-Polish films. This listing includes a lot of Polish and USSR titles, which are not desirable for international collectors. The overall price is well padded in my opinion.

Yes, Polish posters often have very different, interesting or "out there" artwork, many of which can be amazing and beautiful to look at, but I wouldnt describe them political in tone or text (tho some might have that element incorporated, in some fashion).
Title: Re: Buy It Nows & Other Earthly Delights
Post by: cabmangray on May 03, 2018, 05:53:24 PM
I've heard that both Polish and Russian posters use either the graphics or text to build up or tear down some political point of view. Since I can't read Russian or Polish, I just take it at face value. Perhaps someone who does read and speak the language can clarify.

Yes some of them are very nice; THE TERMINATOR comes to mind. As Erik said, some of them are really "out there".

Yes, so to us, on this forum, with a breadth of knowledge and various acquired tastes, they may have some meaning.  If not value.

Fantastic salesmanship on this one  ;D

Just a taste (if this doesn't start you scrambling for $300k nothing will!)

"It's been said "you can't take it with you." It turns out that's not true. You can. Because of my maturing age, and, the awakening reality that I've long since crossed the great dividing line of having lived longer than I'm going to live, I consulted my attorney on the legality of having this poster (and other key items in my possession) cremated with me. Much to my surprise, it's perfectly legal to do so. We drew up the Will and all the legal papers last month, and so the ashes of this poster - along with my charred remains - are going to be sprinkled at the base of the Hollywood sign shortly after my demise. That is, unless someone pays a minimally appropriate price for this poster now"

A rolled version has sold for $19k at Heritage in the past, so the price is 'only' 5 or 6 times higher expected. For me, it's more the photos/description that make the auction amusing. They're worthy of a $9.50 auction.

One does wonder though over this not uncommon seller logic. “I saw this item sold for X on Antique Roadshow/Pawnstars/whatever. Therefore my own copy (in worse condition and quite possibly a fake) must be worth FIVE TIMES MORE!!!!!!!” And they’ll get very angry if you think otherwise.

The Horror (1932); linen backed US OS.

Quirky, fun imagery, too.

Seems a bit pricey. When looking at the most recent results at HA and emp, each last auctioned an unbacked copy. HA's copy went for $334.00 in May 2015, and $705.00 was the winning bid for the copy at emp in July of 2015.

The Horror isn't a particularly rare poster for an early 1930s release, so while it is a fun OS, I would agree that $1,295 is a bit pricey.

Tho a smaller pic, I think I'd rather track down a copy of the US one sheet, instead. Cooler imagery, imo.

You'd think that when tloce had a $26K BIN price tag on a poster, he would upgrade his picture quality and lighting, just a little bit..... imbecile.gif

At this point I bet even his carpet is a bootleg. I actually use it when skinning over listings, does not matter what poster is in the image as soon as I see that carpet I move on.

If nothing else, that carpet looks to be from about 1975..lol. Earth tone shade, and all. But between that and the right side, indirect lighting setup, all loce's stuff is easily identifiable, at a glance.

Backtracking with a question. How many copies of that King Kong Swedish 3-sheet are out there? It seems to pop up with regularity ever couple of years which says to me either there are several copies floating around out there, or it's one of the most "flipped" posters I know of.

I wonder?

HA has sold a copy of this 4x between 2010 and 2018, withe the last realized price being $26,290.00, this past April.

And this was an unbacked copy from the Kirk Hammett collection. https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/horror/king-kong-rko-1933-swedish-oversized-poster-255-x-47-/a/7178-86229.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515

I happened to trip across this BAT poster tonight, and tho a BIN with a $3500.00 price tag, it's not an earthly delight.

As the title and info suggest, this is a commercial reproduction produced by an Australian company called Impact Posters. The title of the auction tries to suggest that it's a 1998 reissue of some kind and that it's been done with permission of the Hepburn estate (if that comment is printed on the poster, it was a marketing gimmick used by Impact).

This is maybe a 25 dollar poster? (if that?)

As a comparative... emp sold a 2004 Limited Edition commercial repro of a 40x60 with this same imagery, in 2015. It sold for $42.00

I saw that recently also, via the eBay link Sunday Silence mentioned.  He has at least one other repro, also listed as "original", and also at an exorbitant price.

In the sixth photo, it says on the lower edge it's a reproduction.

Repros like this should be described & priced correctly, as well as listed in the proper category. It's these kinds of mistakes (or intentional listing decisions) that have made buyers so angry over the years, having gotten burned.

Luckily, ebay's Buyer Protection is there to assist, if needed.  thumbsup.gif

Mrs. Miniver is really Matt Shapiro. If you check his ebay listings, he has other very rare items, especially Star Wars which has always been his favorite. His asking prices for anything he lists though are quite literally stratospheric.

Yes I know that it’s Matt Shapiro and even remember the speculations that he was dead at one point - when was that, more than a decade ago?

I hadn’t seen this set before though - it comes up as the most expensive international poster on offer on eBay...

Also for those who don't know, he pissed off a lot of big time collectors when he was charged with the task of providing lobby card illustrations for the then new idea of a movie poster price guide way back in the mid 80's. He called in all kinds of favors to get very rare lobby cards to photograph, under the assumption they would be used as illustrations for the book, which they were. He also promised every collector who contributed images to the project that they would be given credit in the book, They weren't, only Shapiro was. He also never told anyone he was making photographic 11x14 copies of the cards to sell at conventions and through MCW. The "I Love Me" capper was a full page ad he took in the guide featuring a $100 bill with his face on it. The boy was delusional then and still is now. His ego knows no bounds.
