Title: Collecting with friends
Post by: okiehawker on January 28, 2018, 07:56:56 PM
Mondo Hazardo and his lovely wife, E Hazardo, stopped by for a visit today on their music and poster tour of the southern U.S.  Frankenstein's monster showed up as well by way of Argentina!  The super antique mall hunter Kev and his wife the Devine Ms. M joined in the fun. A great time was had by all looking at posters, stills, and eating great homemade mushroom lasagna, apple pie, and drinking local brew.

I'm the bearded wonder holding the green skinned guy with Mondo Hazardo.  Now, I'll have to shave the beard off...

That Bride of Frankenstein poster is beautiful!
Thanks, Brude!  It's only 83 years old this year. It's so cool to me that paper like this has survived. Okie

Hey okie,

Do you have your ARG Bride of Frank  bed1 displayed as one of your poster centerpieces?

Hi Jeff, Yes, it is up and framed in a good location to see everyday just outside our main bedroom.  It also has friends on either side: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde stage poster circa late 1800s, and Walking Dead lobby card of Karloff shambling toward his killers. I'll picture those two sometime as well (maybe on their anniversary dates?).  Thanks for asking.  Okie

Looking forward to seeing that trio, okie. Sounds like quite the threesome.  thumbsup.gif

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde stage poster circa late 1800s (I hope you all will forgive me for posting a stage poster here as I'm more inclined to share with invested APF members).  Mario Cueva performed the restoration and he did an amazing job removing the poster from very old linen, and conducting expert restoration. In the collecting with friends theme of this thread, please also enjoy the photo I took of the poster with my friend Bruce Hershensen taken at the Oklahoma Alliance of Fans (OAF) convention a couple of years ago.  This is the only copy of this poster I have seen in four decades of collecting.  I'm so happy it survived.  I hope you enjoy it as well.  Okie

Beautiful poster, okie. Worth the wait, for sure.

And it looks like Mario did a really fine job on the restoration, too! clap clap

Jeff, there is a horizontal poster that has been sold previously from one of the early stage versions and here is an image link https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_Jekyll_and_Mr_Hyde_poster_edit2.jpg

Bruce had a really nice group of early stage posters come to EMP a couple of years back and the one I have came from that group.  There were some beauties in there including four different Prisoner of Zenda posters which I added to the collection as well.  I've also seen an incredible She (H. Rider Haggard) stage poster that sold about that same time that I have wondered if perhaps may also be from that same group though somehow sold differently.

Hi okie...

I probably saw that same auction that you mentioned and had forgotten, but that's why I asked if there were other styles of the Hyde stage play, because I remembered seeing them... but just not where or when.

Thanks again, for the add'l info.  :)

One last question, okie. I can see that the HYDE poster has the artist's name on the lower right area. What's his name? I cant quite make it out.

Thanks again, okie.

I looked A.S. Seer up last night. From the imagery I found, they did quite a bit of good work. Several collections of their poster work are in the Library of Congress, too.

Hi Chris, Ladeda, Monster, and Jeff!  Thanks for checking out these amazing survivors.  Hard to believe with bugs, rain, humidity, heat, mold, cheap paper etc. that these posters made it through time.  Ephemera, indeed!  Okie

And Okie, remember when I asked if there were other styles done, in additional to the poster you have?

I was mistakenly thinking of this 1890 theater poster for Hyde, which I'm guessing was from a different production altogether.

Hi Jeff, Yep, that's the same one as in the Wikipedia link.  It's cool and rare as well.  Though,  the in-your-face, completely crazed, full color Hyde punching the match girl must have been a much more shocking to see poster on the street in the late 1800s, I would think.  I was shocked when I first saw it.  Okie

I agree with you, Okie. And the full color litho is also a huge plus, too.

Do you know if your poster and the one above were both used to advertise the same production?

Different cities, I think, Jeff.  Possibly both starring the actor Richard Mansfield.  Okie

A bit late to the game, but Gorgeous Hyde there Okie!

I'd love to see  the 'before' photo previous to Mario working his magic on it if you have a shot of it on hand?

Hey thanks, Okie.

What a bang up job by Mario. I've had one piece worked on by him, and was extremely pleased as well.

What part of the south east U.S. are you from? I'm right outside of Richmond...believe there are a few of us from that part of the world. Matt's in S.C. I believe.

A great collector friend of mine found this beautiful condition One Million B.C. herald, and sold it to me last weekend at OAFCON.  I really like the Sinclair oil company advertising talking about prehistoric animals and oil mellowing.  Great advertising nexus, eh?  This herald is a welcome cousin to the one sheet included here as well.  Okie

My friend, Charlie, and I both loved the original 1936 The Walking Dead starring Boris Karloff.  We both wanted this lobby card, and I'm sure glad Charlie ultimately decided to chase some other nice paper that day! I'm going with the movie was initially released on Leap Day (pretty cool) February 29, 1936, by Warner Brothers (sources list Febuary 29, March 1, and March 14).  It looks like reviews started showing up in early March 1936.  Happy Halloween & Samhain (my Celtic brothers and sisters!).  Okie

On my annual visit out to Oklahoma and places along the way, I had the good fortune to stop in West Plains, MO, and see my old friend, the incredible Bruce Hershenson! I think the pandemic has made it even more exciting to see old friends and I was sure glad to see Bruce (thanks for the lunch, Bruce!).  Bruce gave me the grand tour of his operation and my how it has grown.  It was nice meeting some of the staff who do such a fantastic job everyday, too!  Here's a professional photo taken by Bruce's staff on the same equipment used for the auctions.  Can't wait to visit again one day! Good times.  Okie

Monster and Tob: Yeah, Bruce's is an amazing operation to visit.

Tob, you're literally walking through a monstrous warehouse where there are so many posters being graded, photographed, catalogued, organized, and stored, it just blows your mind.  With so much amazing poster auction preparation going on, it was nice to witness how calm and cool the staff were while doing their work. There was a great vibe that people were enjoying their work, too. It's a busy wonderland!
