Awesome pic. Great find, Rich.

The other shot used in Ackerman's Chaney book was in b/w and not nearly as sharp.

Who is Ackerman?

T

Forrest Ackerman, the man on the left in the picture, who was the Editor of the fantastic horror magazine, Famous Monsters of Filmland, from its start in 1958. He also had a fantastic home in the Hollywood Hills, that he labeled "the Ackermansion" and it was filled with props and memorabilia from many of the classic sci fi and horror films, including pieces from King Kong ('33 version) and the original War of the Worlds.

I visited his home 3x, as he would give personal tours on Saturday mornings. It was a real treat to meet him, as I began collecting the magazine as a teenager.

Interesting...

I guess the blue vs. green water could be due to the type of film used (oversaturated kodachrome or velvia).  However, that wouldn't explain why the title on the other style Phantom poster is still so yellow.

no humble pie for me Chris. I never had a + or - comment on the claim by Ted.
No evidence of anything pro or con
didn't dispute or agree
was entirely neutral

get the idea?

What a great pic!  It's really rare these days to see a completely unrestored Universal horror poster from the 1920s (or even 1930s), like those 2 versions of Phantom of the Opera displaying clearly visible fold lines and border tears.  Not only do I like the natural wear and tear of these examples, but as the comparison with the linen backed copy from HA database shows, seeing an unrestored poster is the best way to get a proper sense of what the poster is supposed to look like without artificial enhancements.  I really do not like the overly clean look of the restored version.

Thanks. Never heard of the guy before, but then again, I don't really follow this stuff.  So what's with Rich's title and Brude?

Ted said the picture existed, but had no picture to post. Saw this on Facebook last night. Posted the pic. That's everything.

I think it was already established that these two posters belonged to David Bradley and not to Forry Ackerman.
Forry did not own any original POTO one sheets.

The yellow is faded out maybe?  Seems to go fast along with the reds...although that is a pretty significant difference!

And the question that would be great to know the answer to, is:

Where are these 2 posters today? Or when was the last time either of of these 2 particular copies were sold or auctioned?

HA has sold the same copy of the "underwater" style twice, which was from the Nicolas Cage collection: (https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/horror/the-phantom-of-the-opera-universal-1925-one-sheet-27-x-41-/a/7098-83322.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515

https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/horror/the-phantom-of-the-opera-universal-1925-one-sheet-27-x-41-/a/695-85729.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 )  but not the "rooftop" style.

Per HA's description on this OS: "To date, there are only four copies known to exist. One is in the archive at Universal Studios and another two are in private collections." So it sounds like FA's copy is in one of those private collections.

Sidenote:  I also prefer the unbacked version. Borders that have been airbrushed a light tan (on the HA copy, or any poster, for that matter) has never been a fave look of mine. It too often looks like a freshly painted wall. Granted, I know that it is sometimes needed in order to blend repairs or areas that have been restored, but it isnt my personal cuppa tea.

And had I known back then that Forry had these 2 one sheets, I would have asked if he could have shown them to the group that was touring his home, on one of those Saturday mornings. What a treat that would have been to see them in person.  notworthy.gif

Two other examples from POTO, this time inserts, both sold thru HA, that also show a fading of the yellows in the title, as well as a bit overall in the one copy):

And Forry still never owned a copy of a Phantom One-Sheet.

The folded poster may be preferable to the linen backed one but remember if the posters are kept folded then the foxing along the fold lines get more pronounced as time goes by.

If FJA never owned a OS, who did those 2 POTO posters shown in the photo belong to? To Robert Bloch? And if not him, any idea?

The photo looks like it was taken in the Ackermansion. The cool and varied artwork on the walls behind FJA and Bloch seems to be the dead giveaway.

For me it shows up on my iPhone and MacBook, but has a missing picture link on my iMac desktop. Very odd…

When i cut and pasted the image url to look at the image directly:

I was taken to a screen that now only says this:

Same here. It may be still cached on some devices but not actually on the net anymore?

Can someone re-post?
