Title: Automobile posters
Post by: guest4955 on September 18, 2017, 04:24:07 PM
So my No. 2 hobby is cars.  This one is mine:

I was watching Chasing Classic Cars on the Velocity channel today. The host was attending the annual Pebble Beach car show and stopped by the memorabilia sale.

The dealer was showing various car items and finally said "the best stuff I have is classic car posters." He showed off a couple like this:

I was thinking I might spring $300 on them. But the dealer said "these are $40,000."

Say what? You can buy a great collector classic car for $40K. I guess wealthy car collectors purchase a couple of posters to go with their fleet of cars....

And old car racing posters can be very expensive too. Plus skiing holiday posters..

Do you still drive? How are cars a hobby for you?

I guess it depends on how you define old, how you define racing, and how you define expensive.  I bought these for around$10/ea several years ago.  You know that my other hobby is rally.  I let my cars get dirty.

5000km to Glory (1969) - This was the highest grossing Japanese film of 1969.

1970: First Japanese car to be Safari Rally overall winner

Nissan started participating in the Safari Rally in 1963 (11th East African Safari Rally), with the Bluebird (P312) and Cedric (G31). In 1966, the fourth year of competing in this event, a Bluebird became the first Japanese car to win its class. The 14th rally was held under abysmally wet conditions, and only nine cars - including 2 Bluebirds (411) - managed to finish the course. No.6, the class victor, was quickly airfreighted back to Japan and put on display in the Ginza.
The exploits of this Nissan team were recorded in a book entitled "5,000 Kilometers to Glory", written by G. Kasahara (Test Dept. manager at the time). This was later made into a movie ("5000km to the Glory") starring Yujiro Ishihara.
Other victories followed. In 1969, a Bluebird (510) took class and team prizes. The "5000km to the Glory" movie actually contains many scenes actually shot at the 1969 event. In the following year, at the 18th rally, Nissan finally took top honors, winning all three prizes - overall, class and team.

I drove for a year after I got sick. But I dented up my car pretty good by clumsy driving so I quit driving. But I've spent $8K this year fixing it up so I intend to start again after taking a safe driving course to ensure I'm OK to drive.

By hobby I mostly mean watching high-profile auto actions and checking out the latest convertible models:

Technically, those are scissor doors, not gullwing.  A gullwing door goes straight up and hinges at th3e center of the roof.

I actually saw one of these Lambo roadsters in the wild on my way home from work a couple of weeks ago.  My normal commute is along Lake Michigan (Lake Drive) and exotics are relatively common during nice weather.

Not a convertible but still one of the coolest cars on the planet.  notworthy.gif

Red Rocker Sammy Haggar is worth $100 million, primarily from the sale of his tequila brand.

He owns 25 Ferraris which made him potentially eligible to buy the LeFerrari, only 500 made, $1.3 million, 950HP, all of Ferrari's best materials and technology.

He finally got it after a year on the wait list:

Just noticed Jay Leno has many car posters/art:

Check them out out - and the amazing 2017 Ford GT -on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-MCdfqL61E)....

But the 2018 Ford GT Heritage edition is even better:

As a kid I frequented collectible car shows with my step dad -- usually trolling the spare parts areas for this or that for one of our several ongoing project cars.  Anyway, one time someone was selling an original GT-40 and I got to sit in it for a quick second.  Amazing car -- and so named because the top of the roof is less than 40" tall!!!

And take a look at where NOT to send your automobile posters for any kind of TLC. Note the 12" vertical fold tear caused by the "handler" starting @ 3;00 and then the awful touch up to try and repair damage THEY caused, by Cloutier's "slop paint-meister" employee/wife.

Totally unfathomable.  crying

I have enough trouble with my ten-thousands of stills & movie posters :).
But vintage car posters are fantastic of course. I'm sort of into the car scene due to my
daily-driver for 18 years now, a 1969 Opel GT. Come to think of it, I even have my own car poster:
I made a film about the car in 2008/2009 (40th anniversary), which is out on DVD. But we had
a few screenings as well, and of course I needed a 1-sheet :).
