Title: August 2017
Post by: guest4955 on August 01, 2017, 05:41:55 AM
Could never afford the A+ TGFH 1S, so I landed the B+ HS for a small fraction thereof:

Could never afford the A+ TGFH 1S, so I landed the B+ HS for a small fraction thereof:

Maybe a fraction compared to the one-sheet (and for good reason of course), but nearly three multiples of what this exact copy brought last time it was at auction - https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/film-noir/this-gun-for-hire-paramount-1942-half-sheet-22-x-28-style-b/a/7113-86206.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515#

Mel, have you ever tried to use the "Make an Offer" feature through Heritage? I know several people who have been able to pick up pieces they wanted that way.

I will be interested to hear your opinion of the piece once you have it in hand. It's good that the overall fading doesn't bother you, but the restoration/recreation to Lake's face (as you say, the centerpiece of the poster) is far too much paint for my taste - especially around the eyes and details of her hair. Compare to this prior Heritage sale to see what I'm talking about. Guess this is why T avoids the restored stuff.

Can't really say, out of courtesy to HA & confidentiality, but something.

I've been giving stuff to Heritage and Profiles in History for a while and factually, they both have been kicking ass for me. Getting me better prices than even my sticker, but I haven't been disappointed yet by either of them for sure.

Did you get $400K hammer for something you only had stickered at $240K?   faint2.gif
Cause that is really kicking butt.
many auction houses have never even had a single $100K hammer, and Heritage is doing it seemingly every auction.  notworthy.gif

Why is it still confidential after the end of auction?  Why does it matter?

you've outed me. I paid $14 for that poster in 1949 when I was in Italy on vacation and to pick up the 12 Action comics #1's I had stored there in a vault beneath Trevi Fountain. They're still mint. Heritage will sell those too.........

My HA Sig slim pickings...

The big one is obviously the French Beauty and the Beast which I got the day before through a private sale and won't receive until September.  Folded, mint.  More later.

I just received this Dracula's Daughter HS from the first release of 1936, unrestored and in very good condition.  I've been looking for the OS for some time, so in the meantime this poster will have to do.  I always loved how moody and atmospheric those haunted eyes are...

Congrats!

The HS is BETTER than the 1S IMO:

But the 3S is the real winner:

I'd be curious to know if HA received the HS already in that restored condition or if it was sent out by them to be worked on, before the Sig auction?

Lake's look around her left eye area appeared a little different to me, too (I hadn't read the auction descrip, so didnt know it had been retouched/restored and thought that was how it was printed), and now, when comparing to the unrestored copy, I see what you are referring to, Sean.

Thank you Jeff and Mel!

Mel, I agree that the 3S for Dracula's Daughter is very nice, I almost bid on the copy that you linked which was sold by HA a few years back but refrained from doing so because it was on linen.  At that time, I refused to buy any linen-backed posters.  I have since relaxed my policy a bit when it comes to larger posters (3S, 6S, French 47X63 and Italian 4F) if a folded copy is hard to get.  I still like the OS best for that title, I love how simple and minimalist the design is.  But I'm happy to get my hands on this HS for now.

I just noticed that the last time HA sold the TGFH half that it was someone who accepted offers. Perhaps there was a price in between the $597 it sold for last time and the price you paid that could have shaken it free.

Nice piece - and all the items that sold in the Haggard auction went for reasonable prices (I was kicking myself later in the day when I realized I had totally forgotten about the auction).
The Dracula's Daughter 1-sheet is a real rarity. The half sheets, inserts, and lobbies all appear fairly regularly but the 1-sheet just doesn't turn up for sale. I don't believe there are more than five copies known, while I've had that many copies of the TC alone in the last 20 years, for example.

Someone won this version from EMP for $410 last week though, madness considering its a modern poster still :o Needless to say I didn't pay anywhere near that for mine  :)

Yeah, completely ridiculous.  I have a couple of those that I paid $20 for when the movie came out.  Having said that, never forget that $400 to some is like $4 to others.  There are a few people at Emovieposter who repeatedly overspend on lesser condition posters that can be found for much less in much better condition.  I don't get it, but then I remind myself that if I was a billionaire, I wouldn't care either.

And dealers/auction houses LOVE those types....

Without question.  ;)

You might care about the condition, irrespective of the cost.  I would.  I do.  (I am not a billionaire)

I had this arrive a few days ago.

A French affiche, measuring 23.5" x 31.5" for the film, They All Kissed the Bride (1942), with Joan Crawford, Melvyn Douglas and Billie Burke. This poster is from the first French release in 1945.

The poster art was done by Boris Grinsson.

Signed and dated (45) in the upper right corner.

thanks bud

4 times or so a year, as studio annuals came out, some studios had the annuals bound inside Trade magazines, like Motion Picture News.
That's what both are, the magazines with the annuals bound in.
sometimes during the summer, the magazines would have one-by-one all the studio annuals in sequential issues for about 12 weeks

the magazines are difficult enough to find. this is the one Metropolis is in

I've had quite a few of the magazines with the annuals in them. Unfortunately, too many people take them apart to remove the ads, which I only do when they are damaged. I may take the Metropolis one apart (though I've had it for years, so who knows when that would ever be), but the Kong one is a NM issue, so, no. Naturally, because of this, the bound issues are becoming more rare all the time.

Been a bit since I posted an update so I've got a few new ones below. Recently added a handful of paper to my Corman collection, some of'em are below and some I'll post in the near future.

Thanks for looking.

Walkabout: An under seen classic by Roeg, give it a watch if you haven't had  the opportunity yet.

Apache Woman ('55): Before Corman started his run at low budget horror/sci-fi films in the the 50's, he did a string of Western's, including this one. His fourth film, starring Lloyd Bridges.

"Children of the Damned" (1964) is a rather disappointing sequel to the excellent "Village of the Damned" (1960), which you should try to watch if you haven't already.  No need to watch the sequel unless you're a completist like me!  Also, you can skip the terrible 1995 remake of "Village" by John Carpenter.

And is Mother a painted poster too?  Or just manipulation of images to create a look of paint.

All to say, photo art of a heart-less Jennifer might be a bit too horrific.  Even if a horror film.

when the film was coming out, I would walk by the Lefferts Thteare in Queens and the poster was displayed in some format, moved every day to a different frame somewhere in front or in the ticket lobby area. Then one day, I walked by and the snipe had been placed on whatever posters they had up.
