Saw Spiderman Homecoming today and it's an easy "A" - probably the most entertaining movie of the summer.

The posters are nothin' special:

I really enjoyed HomeComing, especially the goofy and funny Spiderman I used to watch in the 60s animated serie.  I am a big fan of Ralph Bakshi, the guy behind Fritz the Cat, Lords of the Ring and Coonskin.  Bakshi was a master !!

Very few people know this but Ralph Bakshi actually did all season 2 & 3 of animated serie Spiderman (1967).    Bakshi was hired to produce because his team was familiar with producing stuff on the very cheap (rotoscoping) :)  Many dislikes the Spiderman produce by Bakshi for its bad quality, especially cheap background.

BUT something very important happened, Bakshi suggested to get rid of the super Spiderman fighting super villains and have instead a friendly Spiderman fighting everyday thieves.  He left all the big villains from comics books, focusing on early life of Peter Parker and his beginning as the "Friendly Neighborhood Hero"...  Bakshi turned Peter Parker into a clumsy character: Peter failed to enter into the football team and became the star pitcher for the school baseball team and most of his girlfriends ended up waiting angrily for Peter to arrive. Bakshi also created the character Susan Shaw. Actually, Stan Lee decided to use Bakshi's idea as the origin of Spiderman.

From Wikipedia - "Bakshi provided the first origin story for Spider-Man presented on television, "The Origin of Spider-Man," which actually used chunks of Stan Lee's dialogue from Spectacular Spider-Man #1--specifically, "In the Beginning," published in July 1968, a few months before the episode aired." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_(1967_TV_series)

Thanks Bakshi !!

The animated serie is also famous for its theme song, the Spiderman theme song...  I enjoyed hearing the Ramones (Blitzkrieg Bop) in the HomeComing movie but I wonder why they didn't pick the Spiderman theme played by the Ramones ???

Yep, the villain was not so overwhelming and that made all the difference:

The news is mostly bad for the US 2017 summer box office, overall down 16% from 2016.

The winners were Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and Dunkirk.

The losers/underachievers were The Mummy, Pirates, and Valerian.

What's always interesting, to me at least, is to figure out which movies will stand the test of time and be remembered 30 years from now like Lethal Weapon, Raising Arizona, The Untouchables, Predator, Full Metal Jacket, Robocop, The Lost Boys or Dirty Dancing are today from 30 years ago.

My vote goes to Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman, Dunkirk and Baby Driver.

I wonder if posters that actually entice and attract crowds will ever make a comeback.

If you just told me that there was a movie coming out about a young Thurgood Marshall, I'd be intrigued and want to see it. But this poster is seriously weak. If I just glanced at it, I would not have deduced what the movie was about. More importantly, I would've forgotten the poster and the movie five minutes later...

This is the "Movie Talk" area, so the Q is how EFFECTIVE the poster, not its creativity/originality.

Marketing Marshall is a delicate dance.

First, serious docudrama films nowadays are primarily made for TV/streaming nowadays (like the Wizard of Liea, with De Niro starring as Madoff).

Second, marketing a black lead character for a white audience is very dicey. They went with a picture of a serious scowling Boseman but showed him dressed immaculately, so potential white viewers aren't overly threatened.

I do think they did better with this one:

I did employment law for 20 years, including endless "harassment" cases.

Most harassment plaintiffs are total nut jobs and lose their cases.

But in this case the defendant is kinda a nut job. You CANNOT get away with this BS nowadays....

Expect way more stories on Harvey.  I’d love to know what is going on behind closed doors between him and his brother.  He doesn’t want to leave TWC but he may have to if the « masturbating in a planter » story is true.

Doesn't surprise me one bit.  When I was working in Rome a while back I knew a young woman (prob 19-20) who worked at the Gagosian art gallery.  She said one day Harvey came in for some sort of VIP visit and he wouldn't stop creeping on her -- even after she was direct that she wasn't AT ALL interested and had a boyfriend.  She said he was a total sleeze bag.

Ugggh! Decisions, decisions...
What to do regarding my thoughts about the movie: Blade Runner 2049  ?
Do I post in:
-What did you just watch?
-What did you watch last night?
-Blade Runner 2049  2017-10-06?
or
-Current releases chat?
(Obviously I chose the later. Hopefully this was correct)

I watch movies on tv/cable/redbox all the time, but I only get to the theater about one every other month. And even then, it's usually a  movie directed towards kids. So I was really happy to be able to go out and see the new BR last night with my friend.

First, for those of you who don't know/or think about it, it's a long movie. When you add in the previews to the movie's run time of 2 hours and 44 minutes, expect to be at the theater for 3 hours. Second, I believe a movie should always be able to stand alone on it's own. Whether it's a prequal, sequal, next chapter, whatever. The movie should always be understandable for someone who doesn't have any backstory knowledge.

My thoughts?
I agree with the title of an article that Mel posted about BR in the other thread- that this is a scifi movie brought back down to earth. The scifi is consisted throughout the whole film, yet not overtly in your face, but subtle.
Now, did I notice some slight similarites or nuances compared to the original? Sure. But these things were just that, "slight". These things maybe enhanced the experience for me since I was a fan of the original, but by no means did it affect the overall story of the new BR. (Also, for what it's worth, my friend who never saw the original, came out of theater very pleased. He thoroughly enjoyed it and understood the storyline and premise).
Lastly, I would say that the orginal film is much more of a SciFi Action film with a dramatic undertone. BR 2049 on the other hand is the reverse. Much, much more drama then action.

I highly recommend. The layout, the landscapes, the sound/music, I'm really happy I got a chance to see it in the theater.

Weinstein got fired today.

I don't want to belabor the topic too much. Just as a former employment atty, I'm just flummoxed. HW grossly hit on actresses auditioning for roles. Those kinda"black and white" cases dried up 25 years ago. Everybody knows now you'll get instantly fired for that if you admit the behavior or the investigation/litigation proves you did. The typical sexual harassment case is very "gray" or obviously frivolous. For example, two employees have a consensual affair but then one wants out. The rejected party sends a bunch of pitiful emails begging reconsideration. The rejecting party then sues even if he/she never suffers any negative employment consequences. Of course, most "harassment" claims just have nothing to deal with "real legal" harassment. One plaintiff I defeated spent forever going on about her coworker's alcoholism. Just had nothing at all relevant to harassment.

****

What is more relevant to this thread is that one particular article talked extensively about how the Weinstein Company has recognized that "prestige drama" movies are no longer viable in theaters. It's all moving to "prestige TV" now. Now that new plan is up in the air now that HW is out.

Let me correct and enhance the record here.

Atrocious sexual cases like Weinsten's dried up 19 years ago when the S.Ct. held that all Title VII employers in the US (those with 15 or more employees) would be 100% immune from liability if they enacted, disseminated, and enforced anti-sexual harassment policies:

*****

EVERY major company did this immediately. Medium-sized employers did this by 2000. Many set up sexual-harassment hotlines but all designated an employee to receive complaints.

I've read boatloads of articles, Twitter posts, etc. in the last few days generically alleging sexual harassment is still rampant in the entertainment industry but none of them mentions that virtually all entertainment companies have viable anti-sexual policies and all have HR and EEO employees to enforce them. They would get instantly fired if they received Weinstein-like allegations but did not immediately question the accused employee and report everything to the legal dept, which in turn would immediately report everything to the Board requesting an immediate investigation or immediate termination if the accused ee has admitted the allegations.

*****

Something atypical and inexcusable happened at Weinstein Company. Four Board members have resigned and it is likely they knew about Weinstein but failed to enforce the company's harassment policies. Also Weinstein paid all settlements himself, which should not been allowed by the company's lawyers bc individuals cannot be sued for sexual harassment. Only the company is ever liable under Title VII.Also the lawyers must have known all details of all prior cases against Weinstein bc that subject is invariably uncovered during litigation. We'll see....

Finally, a good article:

But they didn't interview a good employment atty.

S/he would have pointed that companies can still take "appropriate action" even if it's a "he said/she said" scenario with no witnesses or other evidence:

- Assure the accuser she will not be retaliated against.
- Order the accused never to disparage the accuser and never communicate with her.
- Remove the accused from any hiring/employment role relevant to the accuser. For example, an actress accuser can be re-auditioned (by a female preferably).

The new Justice League trailer is quite entertaining. Hopefully will be good as WW, much better than awful Bat v. Sup.

http://www.justiceleaguethemovie.com/#/videos/trailer/ (http://www.justiceleaguethemovie.com/#/videos/trailer/)

The Sup/LL dream scene is quite touching:

(During the 2 month reshoot scenes, Cavill was growing a mustache for his next role. They had to CGI it out like they did with Gadot's baby bump in the WW reshoot!)

Pretty silly that Aman can fly:

The villains are super-dopey IMO, why I rarely like comic book movies:

Hollywood and corporations are inseparable nowadays.

The director of JL saw a cool Mercedes concept car in a video game and wanted to use it in JL. Mercedes saw a great marketing opportunity and built a working concept car for JL.

Cool 4 minute vid about the cars and Gadot and Affleck praise them:

Now Mercedes is running commercials on national TV promoting the cars. It’s 90% a promo for JL:

I'd like to see 1-3 Grade A blockbuster films make the Oscar cut. Do you agree?

http://variety.com/2017/film/features/studios-raise-stakes-with-quality-movies-1202597117/ (http://variety.com/2017/film/features/studios-raise-stakes-with-quality-movies-1202597117/)

A funny thing happened on the way to major studios’ predicted demise: They started making some excellent movies.

Whether through serendipity or survival instinct, studios have already managed to release more than a dozen major Oscar contenders, and 2017 is far from over. It’s still early, and usually coming up with lists only makes trouble, but based on conversations with consultants, executives, producers and other veterans of the Oscar trenches, we can identify the following studio releases as pictures of interest: “Wonder Woman,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Blade Runner: 2049,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Baby Driver,” “Logan,” “mother!” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

Still on deck for fourth-quarter release are “The Post,” “Downsizing,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and “All the Money in the World.” (Disney’s holiday tandem of “Coco” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” are also intriguing wild cards.)

Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution for Warner Bros., says the studio has often been a factor in the Oscar race over the past couple of decades, even during stretches when rivals have withdrawn. The record reflects that, with best picture wins for films like “Million Dollar Baby” and “The Departed” and high nomination totals for others such as “Gravity,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Mystic River.” This year, she notes, “it’s much more competitive overall. I really like that. There have been a lot of wonderful, small, artistic films getting recognized lately, which is great, but this year has been such a strong year for films connecting with large audiences.”

One reason for so many love connections, many studio vets say, is the rising bar of expectations. Audiences who agree to get off their couches expect to be rewarded, both in commercial megaplexes and industry screenings rooms, given how much cinema-grade quality there is across the media spectrum.....

I'm not holding my breath.  Studios have a terrible track record at the Academy Awards.  In the past ten years alone, only WB has won the award once.  The rest went to indies Fox Searchlight (3 times), Weinstein/Miramax (3 times), Summit, Open Road and A24 (once each).  Of all the movies mentioned in the article, I only see Dunkirk as a sure bet for a nomination (not a win).  Then maybe Beauty and the Beast.

Spacey no doubt paid a fancy PR firm $$$ to write this insane statement, now he'll have to go on Ellen and clean it up himself....

‘Kevin Spacey has set gay rights back’: Actor blasted for response to sexual misconduct claim

Kevin Spacey apologizes to actor for alleged sexual advances

0:00

Kevin Spacey issued a public apology after actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making a sexual advance towards him 31 years ago. (Amber Ferguson/The Washington Post)
For a few hours after a bombshell BuzzFeed interview in which actor Anthony Rapp alleged Kevin Spacey had made a sexual advance toward him more than 30 years ago, when Rapp was just 14, Spacey remained silent.....

Then, at precisely midnight, the veteran actor posted a two-paragraph statement on Twitter.

In the first, Spacey said he was “beyond horrified” to hear Rapp’s story but did not remember the encounter, which would have taken place when Spacey was 26. However, he apologized “if I did behave then as [Rapp] describes . . . for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.”

Then, in the second paragraph, Spacey came out as gay.

“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life,” he wrote. “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”

[Kevin Spacey addresses allegations he made a sexual advance on a minor]

His late-night statement outraged many, particularly in the LGBT community, who accused Spacey of trying to deflect from a serious accusation — making a sexual advance on a minor — by coming out and implying that it was his choice to be gay. For years, the actor has danced around rumors he had relationships with other men

Shooting remakes, especially of films that are not that old, simply shows the lack of creativity in Hollywood these days. A sad state of affairs for sure.

And then remakes like the POS reboot of Ghostbusters is the result.  puke

All 17 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies ranked worst to best (http://mashable.com/2017/11/01/marvel-cinematic-universe-movies-ranked-worst-best/#Nvka6IjFxiqY)

1. The Avengers (2012)

Not since the first big super hero alliance has any team-up been so great (Captain America: Civil War had a stellar team but a thinner plot – and no Loki). Despite being a team up, it's not technically a sequel, and doesn't waste time on expository baggage beyond introducing our heroes to one other.  The film brings them together with plenty of witty banter and fascinating face offs (Mjolnir vs. vibranium, anyone?), and ends with shawarma, thus accidentally creating the best sub genre: Avengers-not-avenging. When can we green light that franchise?

Actually, I think they've all - even Clooney - been excellent.

Affleck IMO carries off the Bruce Wayne aspect the best and he's pretty cool - even dressed up as Batman for his 5yo's party.

Saw Justice League today, critics totally miffed on this one, audience got it right.

"A-" IMO, fun rollercoaster ride, great new characters (Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg), "funny (Flash refers to Superman's resurrection as "Pet Cemetery"), excellent CGI/special effects (they spent $300 million and it shows), etc.

Main weakness was its brevity, 120 minutes not enough for so many characters.

Keaton by far #1 and it still hold up. Bale #2, Nolan being involved and the story continuity probably escalates Bale to the best career Batman.  Kilmer actually wasn't a bad Wayne, but his Batman wasn't so good. Clooney was just terrible altogether.

As of right now, I put Batfleck behind Keaton and Bale.

You could tell by the trailer what this film was going to be. DC really needs someone to get a global plan put together and layout a broad multi year plan and pull in some talent to work the films behind the camera.

Tonight, we’ll probably watch All the Money in the World.

A from me, RT 84, MTC 75. Can wait for Netflix but I like historical dramas. Oldman is the frontrunner for Best Actor and, according to Churchill's family, is the first film to accurately portray his iighter side, ex. takes subway and jokes with passengers and - hilariously - lies about their conversations to stave off "peace" (really surrender) talks.

Anybody else seen it?

My bro-in-law said Gary Oldman was "tiny" and in real life looked nothing like Churchill, so I researched it.

Oldman (5'9") is 59, 6 years younger than Churchill (5'6") in 1940.

He spent ONE FULL YEAR preparing for the role, and he had twice turned down the Churchill role in prior movies.

Yep, quite a transformation, spent 200 hrs in the makeup chair during filming:

Yep, eons ago I read a long article about the biz of movie theaters, they are really just concession stands, which explains the absurdly high prices for popcorn and the unenforceable "bans" on bringing food into theaters (Mom used to sneak candy bars in her purse). Also explains why there are so many movies (Harry Potter, Jumanji) "catering" to teenagers, who eat tons of junk food.

That's why AMC clarified that it was not opposed to movie subscription services, just money-losing MoviePass, which pays local theaters 100% of 2D ticket prices (no 3D/Imax).

Mixed opinion on Molly's Game, maybe a B. Jessica Chastain was excellent and, er, comely. Her lawyer gave a "jury closing argument" during face-to-face settlement negotiations, which never happens. Kevin Costner was very good also, a jerk/adoring father. But I don't understand or appreciate poker and "Molly Bloom" was morally ambiguous, which no doubt is what director Aaron Sorkin wanted.

What did you think of it?

Also do you know any women who run in poker circles? My galpal ("galpal" = long story) in Savannah GA five years ago started playing online poker five (!) hours a day and recently won $2K in a tournament, small-time to most but pretty impressive to me.

Last Jedi has a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score amongt top critics.  I wouldn't call that disrespected.  At 74%, Jumanji was not trashed either.

Justice League and Ghostbusters were just awful.  And Greatest Showman is, like La La Land, the kind of movie people need right now, if only to let us forget about politics for a brief moment.  It is not good (La La Land was much, much better), but it is fun enough.

But it does give me an excuse to blather on about a related topic: the unmatched accuracy of CinemaScore(.com).

I had not heard of it until recently, but supposedly it's been the "gold standard" of audience grading since 1978.

WikiPedia cites the CScore in virtually all articles devoted to particular films:

WikiP naturally has an excellent article about it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CinemaScore (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CinemaScore)

Most importantly, the CScore is calculated from only 400 scorecards collected from 25 large US cities. The average score is B+. CScore claims that more scorecards would not be statistically significant and the studios, which buy its data, apparently agree.

*****

I checked the CScore for movies I've seen recently:

A-list movie stars flocking to TV limited series and movies: Streep, DeNiro, Clooney, Pitt, Kidman, Witherspoon etc.

Why?
- big paydays plus “backend” bucks financed by Apple, Facebook, Netflix etc.
- TV is a “writers medium” that offers high-quality roles, movies are action and special-effects-oriented catering to teenagers/foreign audiences
- TV audiences often dwarf movie audiences, and stars want to be seen, not just getting awards for unseen movies

Variety throws a punch:

http://variety.com/2018/film/columns/uma-thurman-kill-bill-quentin-tarantino-1202686604/ (http://variety.com/2018/film/columns/uma-thurman-kill-bill-quentin-tarantino-1202686604/)

Quentin Tarantino needs to come clean about what happened on the set of “Kill Bill.” He needs to speak out, to fess up and tell us what, exactly, he was thinking. Because that could be one small yet meaningful step toward repairing what’s sick and broken in our entertainment culture — and our culture, period.

In a bombshell interview with Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, Uma Thurman, who for 10 years, beginning with “Pulp Fiction” (1994), was Tarantino’s movie-star muse, details what she went through at the hands of the predatory Miramax mogul Harvey Weinstein: the sexual coercion (hotel rooms, bathrobe, compliant publicists — the whole gruesome Harvey bit) intertwined with threats of career derailment, all of which she bravely resisted. But, of course, we have now heard these skin-crawling Weinstein stories many times. Thurman’s testimony, courageous and important as it is, adds up to one more horrific chapter in the saga of Harvey the unspeakable.

The every bit as jarring news in Thurman’s account is what transpired between her and Tarantino. In Mexico, nine months into the shooting of “Kill Bill” (the film had yet to be sliced into two volumes), just four days before the picture was set to wrap, Tarantino, filming a crucial sequence — the heroine’s ride to vengeance — asked Thurman to step into a rickety blue Karmann Ghia and cruise down a sandy rural road at 40 miles per hour. She didn’t want to do it, and said so. A technician on the set had informed her that the car was faulty; the sequence, from every indication, needed a stunt driver. But Tarantino wanted Thurman in the car — he craved the cathartic cinematic realness of it. And once he insisted, she gave in.

She drove and drove, and wound up losing control of the vehicle, which slid off the road and crashed into a palm tree, seriously injuring Thurman’s back and her knees (injuries she suffers from to this day). She considered suing Miramax, but wasn’t able to get hold of the accident footage captured by the camera mounted on the back of the car. Weinstein, the lawyers at Miramax, and — yes — Tarantino knew the footage was actionable, and kept it from her. (They’d relinquish it only if she signed a waiver releasing them from liability.) She has the footage now, though, and has made it public. Watch the video, and you’ll see that every bit as disturbing as the car crash is the casual, all-in-a-day’s-work way that Thurman is hoisted out of the car (with Tarantino hovering), as if to deny the damage of what just happened.

So how could it have happened? The answer — or much of it, anyway — resides in Quentin Tarantino’s head. That’s why we need to hear it. And reflect on it. And judge it.

In the four months since the #MeToo revolution was launched on the wave of the original accusations against Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, James Toback, and others, there hasn’t been a lot of call for men to speak out. The accused, of course, have had nothing to offer beyond limp pro forma apologies and barely contrite silence. Other men have voiced impassioned support and belief in the movement — and, on occasion, they have struggled to reframe the argument, only to learn (as Matt Damon did) that this is a time for listening rather than parsing.

But Tarantino presents a different situation. He’s not accused of sexual harassment — but he was, of course, very close to Harvey Weinstein, so the question of what he knew and when he knew it, and what responsibility (if any) he holds for enabling Weinstein’s behavior, remains relevant. Tarantino has already spoken out on these matters, in an October interview with The New York Times that seemed, at the time, to keep the world at bay. He may now have to say more.

He certainly needs to address the “Kill Bill” car scandal in a far more detailed and confessional manner — because he’s in the murky middle of it, obviously, but also because Tarantino is in a position to shed light on how the vertiginous power dynamics of Hollywood operate, and how they might now change.

An honest question: Is the revelation of Thurman’s “Kill Bill” story a #MeToo moment? There’s no denying that the car incident didn’t just happen out of “negligence.” It was the result of a recklessness, an arrogance, a so-ingrained-it’s-taken-for-granted pattern of unchecked aggressive male dominion in the film business. Seen against the backdrop of #MeToo, against the pileup of accusations and a landscape that’s shifted, overnight, to a policy of zero tolerance, the “Kill Bill” incident looks, perhaps, like a second cousin to harassment: the cold exploitation of talent by those who surely knew better.

Some are calling it an act of misogyny, and are quick to lump it in with what they view as the misogynistic undercurrents of Tarantino’s films. But I would afix a not-so-fast! warning to that assessment. The cinema of Quentin Tarantino is a pop dreamscape in which the imagination — and, yes, the anger — of women has been portrayed with an audacious hellfire exhibitionism. “Death Proof,” the one-half of “Grindhouse” that he made after “Kill Bill Vol. 2,” is a parable of vengeance that, in fact, features a horrific female car crash, with bodies smashing through windshields and limbs flying. Yet taken as a whole, “Death Proof” is a virtual parallel of #MeToo: It’s all about women rising up to say that they’ve had enough, giving the men who’ve abused them a toxic taste of their own medicine. In both halves of “Kill Bill,” Uma Thurman’s The Bride is beaten down, bedraggled, and left for dead, but she’s also a slashing samurai-hellion with a whiplash gleam of empowered elegance. She’s a victim-turned-crusader, and nobody’s fool. The film is masochistic, and sadistic, and misogynistic, and feministic. That’s the Tarantino brew. More to the point, that brew is a heightened version of everything the movies have been for 100 years.

It’s telling that the Karmann Ghia sequence that Tarantino was shooting, if you watch it at the beginning of “Kill Bill Vol. 2,” is a deliberate echo of Janet Leigh’s night-drive-through-the-rain in “Psycho.” Leigh’s Marion Crane was, of course, on her way to the slaughter, and Thurman’s Bride faces terrors nearly as extreme, though she, unlike Marion, turns the tables and triumphs over them. But the parallel brings out the underlying Old Hollywood side of Tarantino. Thurman’s interview with Dowd includes accounts of how, during filming, it was Tarantino, off camera, who was actually spitting on her (instead of the Michael Madsen character) or pretending to choke her, just as it was Hitchcock who held the knife during certain set-ups in the “Psycho” shower scene. With that in mind, the “Kill Bill” car incident raises the question: Did Tarantino, like Hitchcock, feel as if he somehow had the right to subject his actors to the torments — or, in this case, the risks — that he chose, all in service to the gods of cinema?

That’s a question that only Tarantino can answer, and I truly hope he does. The fact that Thurman felt like she couldn’t say no to Tarantino is the most painful aspect of this story. You can see how refusing to get into that car would have meant, for her, upending the whole looming power structure. And that starts to sound very familiar. Yet what took place on the set of “Kill Bill” raises issues that extend beyond the parameters of #MeToo: How often, in the shooting of a movie, does this kind of risk take place? And how much does it happen to women vs. men? These questions will start to be answered in the days to come. For now, though, one can’t escape the feeling that the “Kill Bill” incident represents an assertion, and a circling of the wagons, by a testosterone-driven culture of scandalous entitlement. Even — or especially — if it doesn’t think of itself that way.

Got an A+ Cinemascore, 98% RT.

I saw it ... and figured out that I am WAY TOO OLD for Marvel movies, except maybe Spider Man. I stopped watching Dr. Strange on Netflix halfway through and wanted to leave 1/3 of the way through BP. They're clearly made for teenagers, despite the older audience for BP (largely African-Am no doubt). How 'bout you?

Ben Affleck rivaled that pos george Clooney as worst Batman ever in Justice League. WTF WAS THAT?

Was 2001 originally filmed on 70mm?

Because if not, blowing up to 70mm from something originally filmed on 35mm isn't going to improve anything...?

As I've said before, digital images of current release movie posters are INSANELY popular on social media, especially Twitter.

Directors and stars commonly release/premiere these images via Twitter.

#1 social media king (although MP is nothin' special):

*****

Here, Robert Downey released a sorta-MP:

https://twitter.com/RobertDowneyJr (https://twitter.com/RobertDowneyJr)

Obviously, many (perhaps most) of these likes/retweets are celebrity worship and for the underlying movie, but some are for the image, so it's a good thing for MPC World.

That's 1.4K comments, 16K retweets (which republishes them to ALL the followers of the retweeters), 71K likes

****

Also on corporate accounts:

Hard to believe but extremely good news from ... Saudi Arabia? Yep, the new Crown Prince is “taking Saudi culture back to the 1960s” before extreme Islamism took over the Mideast. S.A. is very young and expected to be the 10th largest international audience for Hollywood movies. No sexual scenes will be allowed but violence allowed. Amazingly the first movie shown in S.A. did NOT segregate by gender:

(http://i1320.photobucket.com/albums/u536/HereComesMongo1968/0b6e1659-c4eb-484d-9195-885c78ad1ec7_zpskgydnvzx.png) (http://s1320.photobucket.com/user/HereComesMongo1968/media/0b6e1659-c4eb-484d-9195-885c78ad1ec7_zpskgydnvzx.png.html)

*****

The good news extends well beyond entertainment! The Crown Prince has dictatorial powers but seems to be a Renaissance Man weirdly. He shakes the hand of female and Jewish reporters, says Israel is S.A.’s #2 ally (behind US), and has allowed women to drive. But he arrested most of the wealthy elite in S.A. and forced them to pay ginormous fees to be released. So “it’s a mixed bag, baby”....

Not all modern, photographic posters are heavily photoshopped... Although a lot of the newer digital and modern style are cool, and probably most effective in advertising, there is something to be said about the timeless nature of traditional film photography.

Classic photo and nice poster.

For me its a nice bounce back. I thought Ultron was shit and CA War was below average.

Infinity War was great at at the way it put so very many characters together in such a cohesive way.

Was great fun and has me looking forward to Avengers 4 when they fix the ending  8)

"Weep, then, for the artists who made Solo, because they did a great job and it's too bad so many viewers are missing out on having a fun, joyful experience watching the movie. It deserved a better fate, and hopefully those who made the bad choice to skip it in theaters will eventually find it on home entertainment (and kick themselves for not seeing it on the big screen in all of its glory). But we don't need to shed any tears for Disney, because they're doing just fine even without the hundreds of millions of extra money Solo left on the table."

I really enjoyed Unbreakable, Sundance.  I'm surprised and very excited to see Glass!  Thanks for the heads-up.  Okie

Make sure you watch 'Split' ahead of 'Glass' as that is the other character featured in the poster (the chap in the middle).

The Rock ... is bombing due to “overexposure”?

Funny, I usually skip the celebrity interviews on Colbert but did watch his. They gave him “superstar” treatment, 15 minutes talking. But he spoke just one sentence about the movie - “to hell with the movie, let’s drink more!” Then they ran a scene for 2 minutes. Funny ... but bad promotion.  Doh.gif

Am surprised Mission Impossible: Fallout has not been mentioned.

What a superb achievement.  An action film that absolutely demands of the audience to bloody well pay attention.

Tom Cruise is absolutely nuts in his endeavours.  I wish the film all the plaudits and profits it deserves.

Want to see it again.

I saw it last night and thought it was brilliant. The action scenes are so well done, it's really exhilarating to watch on the big screen. Perhaps the best blockbuster I've seen for a while.

I know Cruise has his quirks and is a bit of a punchbag for people, but you have to give him credit for his commitment. The helicopter scenes, the jump where he broke his ankle, the HALO jumps - proper stunts that carry weight and look/feel so much better than CG.

Here's a little vid on what they did for the HALO jump scenes

To me, Tom Cruise always delivers something enjoyable regardless of the overall film.  Here's a story I was told around Days of Thunder filming time in Florida:   A friend from college told me a few days after it happened that her friend working on the film brought Tom Cruise home for a meal.  "Hi Mom, I brought Tom home for lunch." Her friend's mom thought she recognized Tom from somewhere.  The mom made them something like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches of which Tom enjoyed and was very gracious.  Somtime later mom found out from her kid she had PB&Jed Tom Cruise.  It was still a fairly small town community once you got out of the touristy Daytona proper back then.  Okie

No one looks like Sharon Tate.  But I have to say that Tarantino was very smart in casting Robbie.  She comes close.

Caught an excellent interview of 66yo Dan Ackroyd by 86yo (!) Dan Rather, who has enjoyed a second career as a "music journalist" (also TV/film actors occasionally) on "The Big Interview" on AXS-TV:

Highlights:

+ They're working on Ghostbusters 3, thinks Murray will commit, sounded like it's NOT stuck in development hell but we'll see
+ praised 2016 reboot but it was too expensive and is a "closed" door
+ he's faded from public view but still very lively and funny, did great impersonations of Jimmy Carter and Nixon
+ said greatest regret was "blowing off" Belushi's last call bc he was burned out by Belushi's benders
+ he credited "corporate compassion" for reinvigorating his career; he was given "Dr. Detroit" movie after Belushi's death, which kept him busy and whence he met his still-current wife, even though movie flailed
+ he had happy childhood but believes he has mild Tourette's Syndrome which "speeds up his mind" and instills creativity
+ like many celebrities he was hawking his "pure chemical free" vodka brand (Crystal Skull):

Good news for us, the top stars/directors now usually premiere the best new MPs on social media.

Jason Momoa has 6.7 million Instagram followers and just uploaded this excellent Aquaman MP:

I'd love to see another Austin Powers movie. It would be interesting to see if they referred to the Daniel Craig Bond movies, or would they go back further in time?

Yep 1 was superb but the others devolved into nastiness. Maybe they will go back to spirit of first.
