Title: July 2017
Post by: eatbrie on July 01, 2017, 01:08:41 PM
I think it is only my 2nd time starting this thread.  What an honor.  It must be due to a lazy Saturday morning in bed.

Nothing much to report, it's summer, the beach is calling me and my heart is not into posters.  Here are the last few...

Touch of Evil (France/1958/Grinsson)

A Place in the Sun (France/1951/Soubie)

Anna Karenina (France/1948/Grinsson)

Breakfast at Tiffany's (Japan/1969)

Mogambo (US/1953)

Halloween 2 (Australia/1981)

Now back to the beach.  Posters can wait until the sig. auction.

Nice haul, there, T.

And that Place in the Sun is something else.

Hopefully the sun is burning thru already down where you are? Its still a "June gloom" morning here in WLA.

I kinda really like this June gloom.  It's been nice while the kiddos were on vacation.  A nice break from this constant sun.  We've been able to do more stuff.

Took a little longer but the sun has won, burning off and dispersing the marine layer.

Had this arrive today. I'd been on the lookout for one for a while and spotted this copy that new APF member nitewalk (Brian) had listed last week. The image is a little grainy as it was taken in a more shaded area, and i had to boost the exposure a bit.

Sweet-tastic poster, Jeff. The hyper-red colorization viscerally depicts Lecter's incarnate evil.

Who can forget that Hopkins absolutely nailed Lecter's fascinating vileness. No surprise he landed the BA Oscar with only 20 mins. screen time...

One of the Top 5 Elvis posters IMO.

Some of the musical performances are stellar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc4T-40l1uA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc4T-40l1uA)

But watching the trailer reminds me that Elvis was a C- actor on a good day:

The second I saw this I thought it is the best modern-style photomontage MP EVER.  The femmes are ludicrously elegant and graceful, as is the cursive title. Cutting off the dude is a minor flaw IMO.

Thanks, Mel. I've also read commentary that Elvis himself knew he wasnt all that good of an actor and was basically cast to push and promote his music with films using his hits as a way to further promote them. He claimed that many of his roles were basically the same and he got bored/typecast. Different names and scenarios but basically the same kinda guy.

The one film I remember liking him in (and the rest of the cast), was Flaming Star (1960), where he played a "half breed" American Indian named Pacer Burton. I enjoyed the story line and particularly liked the actress that played his Indian mother - Dolores del Rio.

Yeah he really should have focused on his recording career but the movie fame and money were too hard to reject.

He did make a stellar, although temporary, recovery with the 68 Comeback Special:

TV specials, Im sure he enjoyed, as they promoted "Elvis, the rock & roller." That was his forte'. He was comfortable and in his natural element. And playing no character but himself.

Nice grabs so far this month!

Mel - I'm really drawn to that Beguiled poster as well. A great example of a poster whose whole is better than its parts.

Jeff - That SOTL OS is iconic for sure, looks to be in nice condition too!

T. - Amazing as always...

Put my nose to the ground, and started looking for a Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Bryanston style, that was in nice shape for a good price about a month ago. I found a handful that were in conditions I would have accepted except they all hand pinholes. No matter how clean the paper, I've got a big aversion to pinholes so I held out, and glad I did. I found the one below that is very clean at a great price with no rips/tears, and no pinholes. It's got some flattening ahead of it, but aside from that, I'm happy to have one of these in my hands.

Nice pickup there, Chris. And thanks. SOTL is rolled and looks to have never been used.

Especially when it's a poster you've been on the search for. I know we all can relate to that good feeling when it's finally snagged.

COO ?  Belgian!

The size... I believe it to be 14 3/4" x 22" but I didn't measure it, it seems bigger than my other Belgians, but I haven't seen them for years so I'm likely confused. Here is a photo with a pen in it for scale (http://www.mysterycorp.com/temp/KissThemForMe_1200_pen.jpg).

Jeff That Lambs is awesome! One day I will own the blue version.

Chris I have always adored this Massacre poster. I am glad you find one too!!! Condition looks nice too.

T I agree, advertising Massacre during that time must have been crazy. Might explain why some of the paper is so scarce, like the Thai version.

I started a few movie review threads but got zero replies so no mas.

But check out Theron's insightful thoughts about this movie:

http://variety.com/2017/film/features/charlize-theron-atomic-blonde-female-action-stars-1202489664/ (http://variety.com/2017/film/features/charlize-theron-atomic-blonde-female-action-stars-1202489664/)

Playing an ass-kicking international spy can’t be easy, but Charlize Theron really suffered for her craft in “Atomic Blonde.” She twisted her knee, bruised her ribs and had to undergo extensive dental surgery, because she clenched down so hard on her jaw she cracked two teeth while getting in shape to throw burly men over her shoulders....

I don't know.  It has been a pretty sad summer season so far, certainly much worse than years past.

Of the movies I've seen...

Baby Driver
Wonder Woman
Spiderman: Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Average
Despicable Me 3
The Book of Henry
The Mummy
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Alien: Covenant

Thumbs down
Transformers: The Last Knight

Waiting to see but not too excited anymore
War for the Planet of the Apes
Dunkirk
Atomic Blonde

Some recent acquisitions: a 3-sheet for The Mole People (linen backed), and 2 UK quads for Hammer (Evil of Frankenstein and a double bill of Rasputin the Mad Monk/The Reptile).  Lately I've been trying to complete my collection of quads that Tom Chantrell designed for Hammer movies.

Jollynice Quads, you may have been lucky to get the Rasputin D/B as Bruce sold one the other day for really silly money, so expect the price on that one to rise...

Not all from July, but who's counting:

40x60 from my favorite movie:

Insert from one of my top 10s:

Never seen the movie, but liked the art:

Think I already have these two, but they went cheap enough so they may be upgrades:

Still haven't got the original yet, but I do love the hokiness of this movie:

Saw this the other night on Amazon and loved it.  Another great film from Park Chan-wook:

Nice haul!  I'm actually a big fan of Rocky IV myself.  It is not an academy award movie to be sure, but it delivers its message to perfection and is an amazing piece of yankee propaganda.  Stallone knew what he was doing.  It worked on the little frog that I was back then.

I did some research 2 years back when I purchased my Belgian BREATHLESS from Kinoart and gathered it was a first release as well.

Nice Besson film posters their hepcat..those two are from his prime for sure. Dig the One Crazy Summer as well...that and Better Off Dead are underrated comedic classics in my book.

That Town on Trial is gorgeous, can you make out the artist?

Congrats on the entire haul!

Congrats on the entire haul!

Boris Grinsson is the artist on the Town on Trial.  I agree wholeheartedly with your other comments as well.  I remember as a 13-14 y/o my parents renting One Crazy summer on VHS and just watching it like 3 or 4 times in a day b/c it was so funny to me back then.  Better off Dead too...classic Cusack era.

Nice haul on yours as well.  Love French posters and wish I had more.

Thanks, Thierry. You are definitely right about there being nothing wrong with Ali MacGraw. At least she looks a little more relaxed than the RR The Getaway Quad.

Posted this in the Thai region thread, but figured I'd post it here too if that's OK.

To Live and Die In L.A. (1985)

I did my best to find another example of the poster, but haven't seen any pictures or auctions of it anywhere. One of my favorite Friedkin movies, so I was shocked to find this artwork, having had no idea it existed. Can't wait to get it framed.

Took a lot of pictures since it's the only example I could find of it online. They link to Imgur for the full resolution.

I had actually been reading some of her posts, so funnily enough, I messaged her first thing when I saw the eBay listing. I just asked if she had one available, but she didn't, so I snagged the poster on eBay.

You have a good idea though, I should send her another message and see if she knows anything about it.

Thanks

I'm not familiar with It's Alive, but that imagery makes me think of Rosemary's Baby. Worth watching?

I havent seen it in a really long time. The story was a little hoaky at times but young makeup artist, Rick Baker, also created the monstrous baby puppet and FX.

Had this arrive a couple weeks ago.

Its the Argentinean OS for the Slovenian-produced WWII film called Moments Of Decision (1955).

Being part Slovenian on my dad's side, the vivid and intense stone litho artwork and the fact that one of the actors listed on the poster shares my last name, all made it kind of a no brainer for me to get it.

It's not "incredibly" rare but it is a somewhat rare poster. I've only seen a couple besides the one I have. Up close it's a great design, but then again Tongdee painted it.

MEL - some great posters in the recent additions. Like the Frankenstein and the Goldfinger. Wish Drew would do a poster for the new Blade Runner as I think his posters for the rerelease of Shawkshank and Blade Runner are great.

Some nice stuff there.  Like The Walking Stick, Le Comte de Monte Cristo, Darling, The Unholy Wife and Trapeze.

It's not "incredibly" rare but it is a somewhat rare poster. I've only seen a couple besides the one I have. Up close it's a great design, but then again Tongdee painted it.
Thanks for the info. Really makes me wonder how many posters I haven't even seen for some of my favorite movies.

BAD NEWS:

My crazy Round 2 war-on-APF-and-my-wallet is ending on one front. I've bought 15 French 1Ps, surpassing my quota of 12 for my French 1P frame so finis:

I have absolutely no clue what this film is about. Does it matter?

This pushes the "good taste" limit, but I sometimes like "implied" edgy posters, like the Italian Repulsion....

Not buying big bucks US horror posters as in yonder times, but splurged a bit for this one for a change of pace.

N'achete pas d'affiches d'horreur américaines en gros dollars américains, mais il a plu un peu pour celui-ci pour un changement de vitesse.

I'll bet my slangy English didn't translate too well, did it "T"?

A very cool optical illusion MP. This was the only XL image I could find, tough to see the effect:

Nice Lost World.  So hard to take a picture of that one, because it's so dark and thick, but it would look great in a light box.  I don't collect lenticulars anymore, because ultimately they are not made to last, but this one feels more durable than the rest.

Thanks Thierry. It is in wonderful condition. The thicker ones definitely hold up better. Less flexing and thus less strain on the two layers I assume. Yeah some just start leaking the UV adhesive and dont hold up. Are any of yours leaking or bubbling? I assume you saw them during your last move. And yes it looks amazing in a light box. But be warned make sure your lightbox doesnt warm the lenticular. Hopefully soon I will have a custom lightbox for my lents that has plenty of cpu fans to keep the lenticulars cool. And not led, not a fan of leds for lenticulars. I bet your twins would go nits for lenticulars.

Jeff thanks man. Its a keeper and will be on the wall for a while shortly. BTW I am totally willing to trade it for your Mecca Cigarette ad you stumbled into.  ;)

I trashed a few a while back that were not in upmost condition, but I didn't have that many to begin with.  If I remember correctly, a few started leaking and became sticky around the edges.  I saw Jurassic World when I moved and it was fine.  So were The Day After Tomorrow and a few others.  The worst was Monster House.

Oh boy Monsterhouse can be messy. I have the bus shelter Monsterhouse and holy crap talk about leakiness. It is so bad. But it is amazing at this size.
Robert from spotlight displays and I both found out the hard way about the Monsterhouse. We both had it framed and hung. Both leaked out of the frame and dripped on our walls and and in my case my furniture.

Chris wasssssup!
Thanks for the comment man. Eagerly awaiting your next Horror Hammer pickup!

Thanks for the depressing news on the lenticulars. I havn't looked at any of mine in ages, just have them all together sandwiched between cardboard pieces. Suppose I have a big pile of dung sitting there.  Might just send them all to Bruce, hate storing them and quit buying as well. PITA to ship too!

Most are just fine. No worries Dale. Only a few trouble makers that leak and those only tend to go bad if they are exposed to heat. Like the Monsterhouse I mentioned. Most are just fine.

Yep, out of the lenticular collecting altogether.  No mas.  If you think of how they are made, it makes sense that they are not supposed to last.  It's not paper.  It's plastic and glue.  Expose them to a little bit of heat, and you're done.  Not for me.

Yes, I got worried when I first heard about premature deterioration in lenticulars. The half dozen I have are all fine (oldest is 24 years old) so I suspect it is a heat/humidity issue.

True, but I move too much to worry about them.  Plus, a potential buyer will always have to worry about the humidity level where he/she lives, which might lessen their value over time.

it would be my suspicion that different methods were used to manufacture them also. As they moved along, they probably found some adhesives worked better than others, lasted longer, weren't caustic or have chemical reactions over time that deteriorated the plastics

I have a 40x60 for Zathura. It's been in the warehouse for 10 years (hot in summer, cold in winter) and I see no deterioration, though I sure would like to see someone say "how much" and "Great, I'll come pick it up!"

Yup you nailed it...good points. I know they used adhesive that cures under UV light. I wonder if the leaky glues are not that type and are less resilient? I also know of about 100's of Lilo and Stitch (thin high LPI) that were produced with a bad batch of adhesive that were tossed by a collector. The other ones he bought in a lot were just fine. Rich is it 40x60 or 48x72? Just double checking. Some of the inks are water soluble as well. Even the white backing with get a little tacky if you were to wipe it off with a wet paper towel.
