Title: Photobucket SUCKS ASS! Any other photo hosting site suggestions?
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on June 30, 2017, 12:29:25 AM
I just got a notice from Photobucket that they are stopping 3rd party hosting---meaning all of the images I have up on this site will no longer be visible...unless I buy their package for $399 per year. SCREW THAT and F-YOU Photobucket. My thread will disappear soon---thank you Photobucket! This totally bites.

Anyone know where else we can migrate that hosts for free?

Thanks!

FREE is getting tough.

I suggest for 50-100 a year, you can rent your own shared server and host a website & whatever else you want to between 10-50GB

I just saw this, too.

That's why the forum banner is no longer there.

Nice of them to do this without any email notice or warning.

They are going to have people the world over royally PO'd, more for the fact that it seems to have done without any courtesy warning or reminder to upgrade or lose 3rd party hosting, say after 30 or 60 days, for example.

Lame business practice, for sure.

And...i've disappeared. Fine! People will be pissed and Photobucket will just go away... I'm NOT paying $400 a year (times 2 as I have 2 accounts!).

I do this. All my APF photos are stored in a folder there

Here's the timely email that Im sure we all received, time stamped 9:34 PM Pacific Time. Again, something like this should have been sent out a month ago, giving folks the option to upgrade, rather than just sending this out tonight AND disabling everyone's hosted pix,, AT THE SAME TIME.

A very poor business move, imo.

I initially used flickr, too. Time to see if that account is still there, or if they dumped it due to inactivity.

I went to the url (www.photobucket.com/P500) indicated in the APF banner replaced image and it seems to go to a users album. I ended up playing whack a mole closing browser pop up windows and had to resort to closing the browser to escape. What a heap of sh!t photobucket appears to be!

Ive already re-instated the APF banner via flickr.  thumbsup.gif

And my old account was still active, too... so all those pics are still there.  whew.gif

I'll replace those images lost with my flickr acc't.

Flickr or Imgur are both good in my experience. Free, stable and nice interface too (unlike photobucket).

Does this mean that all hosted images will disappear from forums etc.? That would be horrible.

Photobucket was already almost unusable with all the pop-ups and ads. They also made it very hard to even get hold of the IMG code when using some browsers. I think they were desperate to find ways to make money when Facebook, Google etc. have eaten their lunch. Don't expect the company to survive for much longer.

Flickr does have unlimited storage but has been neglected by the mother company Yahoo for a long time now. Since Yahoo has just been sold to Verizon I would not expect any improvements.

What about Google photos?

I'll bethe contrarian.

It's working well for me.

I went ad-free pretty cheap.

I like the slideshow option when u upload pics in an album:

Tried Flickrfirst but preferred PB.

What are 3rd party images?

photos people host on Photobucket, but use to show on other sites, like APF

OkI did not receive the email - ckecked spam and trash too - and my hosted images are displaying onAPF fine so confused. Obviously very few will pay $400 year when Flickr is free and u can get your own site for $10 a month so seems bizarre biz decision

OK I think I understand what's going on. I started a new PB (TheSundanceKid1968) for free today. You get 10GB free then must upgrade as follows:

So you indeed must upgrade to the $40 month package when you exceed 10GB to get 3rd P hosting.

******

I have 650 images uploaded taking up only 0.3 GB on my existing acct (HereComesMongo1968) so plenty of free space for most users:

I'm only using 0.4 GB of my total free storage, which is nothing.. and my 3rd party hosted pix (or most of them, as some are still sprinkled around) are still gone. So there's more to it than just exceeding one's free limit, I think.

And the fact that some pix of mine that are 3rd party hosted ARE still here seems also very mickey mouse. Why the random, willy nilly "host some pix but not others" action by pb?   hitself dontknow.gif

Jeff, you should contact customer service. Just checked my old posts and 100% are still there, although my account is only a month old.
Title: Re: Photobucket SUCKS ASS! Any other photo hosting site suggestions?
Post by: erik1925 on June 30, 2017, 02:15:32 PM
I can try contacting them. From that blog link i posted above, it seems, from some entries, that their Cust. Service is pretty shoddy/slow, too...

I think that the amount of Free Storage one gets vs the 3rd party hosting abilities are 2 separate issues.

But it might be worth a try, since some pix are still hosted, while others arent. And Im guessing Ive had my Pb account set up for close to 6 years, now.

And another kicker: Last night, I clicked on the "Contact Customer Service" link to maybe ask a question. I was taken to a 404 error page, saying that particular page could not be found. Now THAT is classy.  :P

From the blog above.. an entry from today, regarding PB's terms of service for Free Accounts:

Title: Re: Photobucket SUCKS ASS! Any other photo hosting site suggestions?
Post by: erik1925 on June 30, 2017, 02:34:42 PM
And if these 2 blog entries/explanations are correct, then Pb is actually not doing 3rd party hosting. When we post the URL to a photo that is on thr PBucket site, we are merely hotlinking the image's url. Pbucket is STILL hosting the image, not the forum itself.

I'd imagine you could move all your photos to another host but use the same folder structure. Then on APF there must be for admins a search and replace function to bulk change URLs to the new location.

Seems the issues remain and are only getting worse.

Someone posted this entry with contact info... but stated he's not sure if the numbers are still current or not. Also, when I went to log onto the site last night, the layout was all messed up. I thought it might be my browser version or something, but again, other blog entries indicate the same "mucked up" website when people have tried to log on. Maybe PB is on the way out...

Here's a link to page 5 of the comments blog (july 1st).. you can view up thru page 8 by clicking on the "next page" arrow:

http://blog.photobucket.com/status/comment-page-5/#comments

"Photobucket Contact Information

(303) 228-5139
(303) 226-6800
Photobucket.com, Inc.
PO Box 13003
Denver, CO 80201-3203

Mr. Shawn White, Owner/Manager
Mr. Stephen J Young, Sr. Director of Business and Legal Affairs

I found the above information on the Better Business Bureau
Not sure if it’s current but you can give it a try.

Photobucket was owned by News Corporation, ie, Fox, ie, Rupert Murdock but was sold to a company called Ontela. The Ontela web site no longer exists but that could be because Ontela changed it’s name to Photobucket Inc. We all know how difficult it is to get in touch with a real person at Photobucket! Hopefully the info from the BBB site above is accurate and currant.

As of today I do not even have access to my images so I can download them. These images are my property. I trusted Photobucket to keep them safe. Now all I want is to get them back.

I am not over the storage limit or even the bandwidth limit as per the original TOU. As for the NEW TOU I am fully within them with the exception of some being linked to my Profile. I cannot correct that if I cannot have access to my images!

Hopefully this is a temporary problem and access will be forthcoming."

I'd imagine you could move all your photos to another host but use the same folder structure. Then on APF there must be for admins a search and replace function to bulk change URLs to the new location.

Good news is that images can still be seen by right clicking on the image and open it on new tab.

Your suggestion of moving them using same folder structure; etc. and then do a search/replace is a good idea.  The search/replace can even be done directly on database so the difficult task is to pick the images...

Totally possible with some script-server code (PHP, ASP), here it is explained:
a) Use PHP to search on your database and get all photobucket URLs, automatically save them in a raw file
b) Then for each URL, do a PHP CURL call to download the images and automatically save it on your server (using the same structure or another structure). Then put the new URLs next to old one in the raw file (use a distinctive separator)
c) Use PHP to replace old URLs with new URLs in all post

Job is done.

It might be a smart idea for anyone that used PB to log on and save/download copies of everything they uploaded to the site, Just in case the Bucket decides to pull the plug and fold at some point.

That way, pics are saved and no one is caught empty handed, photo-wise.

It is wacky and you seem to be lucking out. I dont get it either. I know all my pics have vanished, with the posts just being blank and void of anything.

That your account is not the $499.00/year setup that allows 3rd party hosting is quirky, for sure.

Every other "upgrade plan" or even the basic free plan or the one where someone pays a very small charge to be "ad-free" does not offer 3rd party hosting, per PB's description. So you seem to have fallen thru some crack. And in a good way.

Photobucket still works for me, although uploading photos is a test of patience.  The site has way too many popups/spam/crap that nearly shut my computer/phone down for a few minutes, every time I try to upload a photo.  starz.gif

I think they make the site barely usable, as they realize a lot of people will just pony up and put their credit card on file for the (current) price of $2.50/month for the luxury of no ads.  Who knows if/when that cost will change, though.

If you navigate to your photo, you should see these options in the bottom right:

If you click the arrow in the middle (share), it'll give you the image URL (click the BBcode option from the menu on the top)

I think I prefer Imgur to Flickr as it's a bit simpler, but as Flickr is owned by Yahoo, I think it's more likely to hang around longer than Imgur.

Try this:

1) When you go to the site, click 'You' (top left menu) then select 'Photostream' from the drop down menu
2) In your Photostream, click the image you want to share
3) Click the arrow, do you get the link under the BBCode area?

When PB decided to take the money or have people run, the first thing I had to do was "re-host" the APF banner, as it also had vanished from the forum header.

I moved it to my old flickr acc't and it immediately worked (and appeared) like a charm.

So in comparison to PB, they are wunderbahr.  thumbsup.gif

This makes no sense, you can go to a hosting company for 80-100 a year and get unlimited disk space and bandwidth. Nothing like the good ol, make it cheap, build up the user base then jack up the price trick.

Just a hosting company as mentioned, there are thousands to choose from, depending on ones requirements: eg software applications, Disk space . Just sounds a pain to be beholden to free services that can chop you off. I think Mel is onto at least his 3rd free site as I recall Mel was on some Apple site early on that did similar plug pulling.

I use HostGo.com Not sure if they are still competitive a decade or more on since I joined them

Use Google to find others, search something like this cheap "web hosting" (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=cheap+%22web+hosting%22&oq=cheap+%22web+hosting%22&gs_l=mobile-heirloom-serp.12..0i7i30l5.40379.45835.0.47227.16.16.0.0.0.0.311.2527.6j5j3j2.16.0....0...1..34.mobile-heirloom-serp..3.13.1772.0jOn0uQ5BfM)

You don't need to build a website, just use the Disk space for storage. Unless the hosting company gives you a domain name, you'll need one at about $15 per year. A domain name gives you web address to your files

I think Mel is onto at least his 3rd free site as I recall Mel was on some Apple site early on that did similar plug pulling.
[/quote]

Incorrect. Maybe I used a freebie site way back but I used GoDaddy ($10 month) for PosterNirvana.com and MoviePosterCollectors.com and now use Register.com ($10 month) for MoviePosterCollectors.guide. Both hosting services are fine.

"Free" sites suck ass for sure, pop-up ads from hell, etc.

For designing I still use iWeb, which Apple discontinued years ago, probably because social media sites like FB took over the Net and nobody wanted to build sites anymore. It's pretty primitive but great for static, visually-rich sites like MPC.guide.

Way back in 2003 I "enjoyed" unemployment for a spell and mastered Dreamweaver but it's way too complicated and unnecessary for a typical MP site.

This makes no sense, you can go to a hosting company for 80-100 a year and get unlimited disk space and bandwidth. Nothing like the good ol, make it cheap, build up the user base then jack up the price trick.

Basically right but Pbucket offers compelling photo album display options you don't get on your own sites. Plus, if you stop paying the hosting fees, your images drop down a black hole:

As I've said before, you really should create a FB page to pimp your MP collection.

- It's free, although FB will constantly beg you to pay to promote it.
- It's 100% independent from your personal real-life FB.
- Can create flexible unlimited photo albums.
- Can create cool banners just like on an independent site.
- Can easily interact with your Page followers via posts, FB messaging, comments on your MP images, etc.

Here's mine, 15% personal, 85% adjunct to MPC.guide:

Easy-peasey to get started:

Bazillion photo albums:

HQ images, easy to move to next photo:

HQ images ???    The reason I dislike FB is that images are resized and there is no way to get the full large size once you uploaded yours.

You can copy your files to another hosting company, setup same folder structure, repoint your domain, all in plenty of time of end of contract. Much better flexibility than free host that springs any new terms on you without warning

Am I the only one whose PB act is still working? I always get "please upgrade to $400 option for 3P access" warnings but it keeps working.

I guess I'm pretty foolish for risking it. I've got 1500+ images on PB distributed over four forums, so it would suck mightily if it failed.

Actually, I ran out of storage so I upgraded to the 50GB plan, which does not permit 3P either. I'm hoping I'm effectively bribing them not to block 3P:

They probably just haven't starting purging all the accounts where someone is actually paying a fee - tackling all the free accounts first?

Saw this on Facebook. Hope it helps:

Quick tip for everyone who still likes to frequent the collector forums, earlier this year photobucket in their infinite wisdom decided to disable 3rd party links and extort their users meaning years of work and millions of photos on forums across the web lost their pics. Someone has delivered the big middle finger to photobucket and made an extension for Chrome and Firefox which allows you to view the linked photos again. I just installed it and it works a treat. Of course if the photobucket account has since been deleted it won't work but many left theirs intact in case such a thing was sorted. Look up photobucket embed fix on the google store.

I can confirm as per above  ;D

Happy days are back (at least temporarily).  Google "photobucket embed fix" for either Firefox or Chrome & add the extension to your browser add-ons.  Very easy and quick!

I can see all the photobucket images again...

Hahahahahhahha.....

Dumbest decision since New Coke - $400 a year - just got corrected -$100 year:

Still 2X pricey IMO....

They committed suicide when they pulled that $400 stunt after everyone had been storing photos there for YEARS. Reducing to $100 is too little too late. And, I agree, STILL overpriced.

Yes, photos will reappear, that's what 3rd party hosting means.

The original astoundingly incompetent roll-out will be covered in biz schools for decades.....

Now that Photobucket seems to be planning a new site, has anyone noticed images disappearing? I have when I look back at my thread...there are just holes. Not X-ed out images. They're just not there. Perhaps they plan to restart from scratch?

Ive also noticed that certain Pbucket images are gone, too, Shawn, from other people's posts.

So maybe they've changed something on their technical end once again (for those not willing to pay their fees, and using a free account, that is)  :-\

People should just use other host sites and forget about these guys.
