Doesn't that go on for about 3 and a half weeks??
Anyway, I watched The Road. I was pleasantly surprised. Depressed by the time it was over, but surprised at the quality of the film overall.

By the way... I'm currently traveling fir a conference so I haven't been able to watch anything. However, just before I left I watched Fists of Legend on Blu-ray. I highly recommend it! I normally don't like remakes, but the fight scenes were great and it was nice to see a pre-Hollywood Jet-Li kicking ass. Check it out... And please utilize the Chinese audio track. This movie has been available in the US for years on DVD but I refused to watch the English-only dub. Yuck.

Sorry but this film was not good.
Not good at all.

I screened Niel Simon's Sweet Charity (1969) the other night and I was pleasantly surprised. Shirley McClain and John McMartin and the elevator scene was a classic!
Also, I noticed several shots in that film that happen to contain several other film posters from the 60's, in fact, I've noticed quite a few films that do that so I've started taking screen shots of them with my cell phone. Maybe one of these days I'll post a few and see if you all can figure out what they are from...

Face of Fire (1959), a smaller, indie film, directed by Albert Band, starring Cameron Mitchell, James Whitmore, Bettye Ackerman. Shot in B/W and what caught my eye was the director, Albert Band, long before his later horror films made via his production company, Blue Moon Entertainment.
A story about a well liked man in a town, who upon getting severely burned after saving a child from a burning house, is avoided and shunned.

Rita Hayworth knocks em dead, every time, in this one.

Bringing Up Baby (1938), with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.
Fast paced and witty, the humor driven action is non stop and almost doesnt allow you to catch your breath. But Grant and Hepburn are great together, as was shown in previous teamings.... Holiday, also from 1938 and Sylvia Scarlett from 1935.
This flicker is a fun watch all the way around.

The Black Cat (1934), with Lugosi, Karloff and David Manners. Had been a while since I watched this. What great sets, as well as the overall look of the flick. According to the intro on TCM, the movie was shot in all of 19 days.
Well worth a watch. And Karloff's look... superb. I remember seeing this as a kid, and the scene near the end in which Lugosi tells (a bound) Karloff that he is going to flay him alive always creeped me out and stuck with me.

Some Like It Hot (1959)
Happened to catch this on TCM last night.
It's always entertaining and the casting is brilliant, all the way around. Joe E Brown is hysterical as Osgood, too.

John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl (with guest Kobe Bryant!!!) A close friend of ours owns a radio station here in LA, so we had box seats. Williams is 85, so it could be his very last public concert. Awesome, as always (I've probably seen him 20 times in concert).
They printed this for the occasion.

I checked out Death Note on Netflix. The reviews are pretty abysmal, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It was an interesting premise.

I've seen J.Williams, too, at the Bowl, and it's always an amazing show and performance. notworthy.gif
The poster, tho, does little for me. It's a bit too on the nose, image-wise, imho.

Brief Moment (1933) with Carole Lombard & Gene Raymond (shown on TCM).
An early drama with comedic moments, that shows what Lombard would eventually do in her later flicks. And with a running time of 71 minutes, it was a quick and enjoyable watch.

A fun, lighthearted and enjoyable flicker with Clifton Webb, Myrna Loy and Jeanne Crain. (And based on a true story, too).
Cheaper By the Dozen (1950)

John Wick.
Fucking A.
Loved it.

Last night.. a French movie, starring Charles Boyer, Danielle Darrieux & Vittorio De Sica, Madame de... (The Earrings of Madame de…)(1953)
Beautifully shot and acted, and overall, a wonderful movie. In French, with subtitles.

Great movie, Jeff. If you liked Madame de, you should check out other films by Max Ophuls, in particular La Ronde, and Le Plaisir. He was an extremely gifted filmmaker. I'm also partial to Lola Montes.
-
Watched The Band Wagon (1953) last night, with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. A musical directed by Vincente Minnelli.
Truly a dumb story (imho) and the last part of the movie with a supposed theatrical show that was nothing but a bunch of unrelated musical numbers, played on a stage that must have been the size of a football field, and 4 stories high. Doh.gif
Astaire was good, as was Charisse, and the Technicolor photography vivid and intense. And, of course, the well known song from this flick, "That's Entertainment."
-
Abandon Ship (1957), with Tyrone Power, Mai Zetterling and Stephen Boyd.
Based on a true story of an overloaded lifeboat, after its ship is sunk, and deciding who must be put out to see to as not endanger everyone in the small boat.
I wasnt familiar with it but caught it on TCM On-Demand. I enjoyed it, and the interaction between all those held together on the small watercraft.

Got home last night and flipped on the TV. I scrolled thru the channels and saw that PBS was showing Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941).
Had been a long time since I'd seen it, as was hooked right away. Such a great flick. And Grant and Fontaine are amazing to watch together, too.

Suspicion is great indeed.
I have some friends currently spending the weekend with me at my place in Connecticut who had never seen The Night of the Hunter, a favorite of mine. The only film directed by the great actor Charles Laughton, it was a commercial failure upon its release in 1955 but has subsequently been re-appraised as a masterpiece. I hadn't seen it in several years, so I was more than happy to watch it again for my friend's benefit last night, especially since I recently read the book by Davis Grubb that the movie is based on. The film didn't disappoint, it's still a wonderful story with a great turn by Robert Mitchum and fantastic set design and expressionist cinematography.
-
The Night of the Hunter is incredible.
Robert Mitchum is terrifying, especially as he hums that spiritual song, at different times throughout the film., or when he's closing in the children at different points.
-
I watched Becoming Cary Grant.
It was a trip...Depressing much of it.
He is one of my favorite actors. Hard to see him as a mortal man.
You need to see it to know wtf Im talking about.

A movie I hadnt seen before... and perfect for the month and season.
THE VAMPIRE BAT (1933), with Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill, Melvyn Douglas and Dwight Frye. In addition, Lionel Belmore, who played the Burgomeister in Frankenstein, is also in the cast.
Frye, in typical fashion, is a trip to watch and even though a lower budget flick distributed by Majestic Pictures, the photography, sets, and overall look are all good, considering. And the cast is excellent, too.
Wray was also seen in this movie before either KING KONG or MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM, tho all 3 were released in 1933.

The Vampire Bat sounds like a good spooky flick, and featuring Ms. Wray in her prime, eh? Cool.
-
Frye's look in VAMPIRE BAT. He certainly has that crazed look, a la Dracula's Renfield.

Decided to give the flick, JEEPERS CREEPERS (2001) a try last night. Not too horrible, with the acting by the 2 leads (Gina Philips and Justin Long), really pretty good.
The Creeper's makeup and costume... excellent. Tho the story had some truly dumb scenes, as most horror movies like this usually do.
Was worth the watch, imho.

Dressed to Kill 1946. Holmes and Watson still great in their last of the Rathbone/Bruce team. What more could you want: music box code, Holmes calling card, auctions, prison, violin, femme fatale, Watson's accidental insight, cat-mouse-cat, poison gas, and that famous Universal quick ending? Great to watch! Okie

The Man Who Would be King (1975). I thought it was still a great movie. The film showed colonialism at its worst wrapped in a Kipling greedy buddy adventure. Hard to beat Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Christopher Plummer, Saeed Jaffrey, and I was surprised to see the incredibly beautiful Shakira Caine (Michael Caine is her husband in real life). If you've read Talbot Mundy's King of the Khyber Rifles, I'll just say there is a lack of respect for the human head in both stories.
Okie

Decent original sci-fi flick I believe first played on Netflix. Creepy ending, good acting overall and yes T, Natalie Portman is in it... so is Oscar Isaac (you will know him as Poe from SW). He's from Guatemala City originally actually... always thought he was Italian for some reason... dontknow.gif

Saturn 3 (1980) starring Farrah Fawcett, Kirk Douglas, and Harvey Keitel. I think it is better than the 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Kirk (63 years old at the time and still in Kirk Douglas tough guy shape with a few more wrinkles) was Farrah's (33 years old on release date and, well, all good things Farrah) love interest. It was interesting in that this SF movie for its time was pretty upfront about the age difference between Kirk and Farrah and included Keitel espousing youth should replace old. The movie tries to be a mean robot movie, though I think during the nearly 39 years since it's release, the age discussion in the movie holds up as well as the robot theme. The robot with actual brain material is kinda wildly weird, too. The cool Thai movie poster made me want to watch this movie. I'm a sucker for Farrah as well: she's lovely of course, though honestly, I've always found her voice uniquely soothing. Okie
