Title: May 2017
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on May 01, 2017, 12:48:58 AM
Hello! Forgive my jumping in on the new May thread, but I wanted to share my usual "sampling" of my first of the month posting. This is the LAST regular monthly poster post I plan on making through the summer (possibly longer). Take a look or don't. Here's the preview:

I was lucky to be gifted this one a couple months ago.  The theater had a special one-night screening, with the producers, etc.  It's only a mini poster or whatever they're called, but it's cool, and the snipe adds character to it.

Pretty cool movie.  The skatepark itself is remarkable, and the film shows the history and the effort that went into making the entire thing happen.

Hey B, I found a shot I took back in April of 2013 of a part of the Venice skate park. It wasn't too crowded that day, but you can see the same accent tile work near the top of the skate pit rim as is shown on the poster.

This arrived last week.

It would normally have gone into the Bond thread but what the hell - this one goes into the May thread.

Another for the deranged completest, a military poster for Thunderball noted mainly for its duo tone and lack of any inspiration.  I really do not know why the military had special posters designed for films' showings.  There must have been places awash with spare posters without having to go the extra mile to redesign, and print.  Anyway..

Could anyone tell me what other military posters were created for the Bond series?  I have a Dr No (even more ugly) and have been reliably informed there is one for From Russia with Love (never seen it).  Cheers.

distribution & regulations. Most likely a private company (like NSS or any of the film producers) could not lawfully distribute films to military bases as a matter of regulations

also, considering that military bases numbered in the high hundreds (or even low thousands) all over the globe, there would be a logistics issue, especially when a 'tent city base' would be taken down & moved to another location and this information is not shared publicly. Meanwhile, the military already has it's own distribution system for food, supplies & equipment. I will also bet that the military may not have paid the film companies to show the movies as part of a 'patriotism to our boys' issue.

There is a war movie with a submarine where you can see them swap movies with a destroyer via a cable between ships. I don't know how a private company would ever think of accomplishing this task.

Mike, this looks to be for one of the Toxic Avenger movies? If so, is your poster from the first flick of the series?

Title: Re: May 2017
Post by: Antoine1973 on May 11, 2017, 10:38:49 AM
Jeff, if I recall correctly, Killbots was first released with that title and poster, and bombed.  The production company decided to re-release it under a different title (Chopping Mall), with a different ad campaign, both of which emphasized the more popular (at the time) slasher/horror angle instead of the sic-fi elements of the story, and the movie became a minor hit.

And yes, that is the French 47X63 for Toxic Avenger, I remember seeing it all over Paris when I was a kid in the 1980s.  Love those silly tag lines (which translate as "More dangerous than the IRS" and "More efficient than Mr. Clean"!)...

Post by: erik1925 on May 11, 2017, 12:14:16 PM
Thanks for that info, Benjamin, re Killbots and Chopping Mall. The first poster (Killbots) almost makes it look like a sci fi movie of some kind, with killer robots that have come to Earth to attack.

And what great translated tag lines on the TA poster. Ive never seen it. Is it worth a watch, with what looks like lots of campy, comic horror bits in it?

Jeff, I'm not sure how much I should recommend watching Toxic Avenger, but if you've never seen a Troma movie before, this one is as good as any other to get a sense of their rather peculiar "style", lol!  I think in general, their posters are better than the actual movies (just as was the case in the 1950s with AIP pictures!).

That's more what I was meaning about it "worth" a one time watch, since I've never seen any Troma flicker before. And if I found it really bad, there's always the off/eject button. LOL.

Great Star Wars and Jaws 2 posters.  Condition is key, and these look perfect and Star Wars is uncut.

Just got this fun French poster from the 40s.  It's not like me to buy a poster for a movie I haven't seen, but I liked the design enough to go for it.

Quote
In a 1968 interview, Astaire described this effort as "the worst film I ever made." Astaire admitted that he was attracted to the film by the opportunity to "dance-conduct this real swingin' outfit". In an interview shortly before his death, Shaw admitted this film put him off acting.

Love the full bleed, red color on this one.

Is this a later RR? Reason I ask is that it has no director or other production credits, just the actors (and Artie Shaw's orchestra). And I see that RAC was the distributor, rather than Paramount.

And here are a selection of other mid-1940's French posters from Paramount films that have both credits and the Paramount name and logo:

http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/search/paramount/tag/nation%253AFrance/tag/decade%253A1940s/tag/extra%253Afirst/archive.html

(RAC is also the shown distributor on the French 1P of Werewolf of London, rather than Universal, which also has been discussed as a possible RR)

I don't know.  I didn't really research it, to be honest.  I saw the auction while driving my car  ;)  I now see that Bruce sold one 2 years ago as a 1947 first release.

I founds 2 other styles/sizes of French poster for Second Chorus. Both also show R.A.C. as the distributor, and also lack credits and the Paramount logo. Does this mean that R.A.C. distributed the first release of this Paramount flick in France in 1947 for some reason? Or are these also RR posters? Maybe or maybe not, but still checking it out.

The research continues.  Spying.gif

Good to know. Case file seems closed.

Maybe, as others have mentioned, because the film was not very good, that by the time it was released in France in 1947, Paramount opted to let RAC distribute it on their behalf, without their name mentioned on the posters at all?  dontknow.gif

Looks to be in pristine condition, too.

Thanks. Yeah, it's not in too bad of condition. A few rows of dings from a paper thin tube, but I expect that kinda thing nowadays.

In any case, this artwork has been on my want list for quite a while and I'm really happy to pick up this version of it.

A little while ago, I was looking at the lightning style one sheet authentication thread. A lot of info. there. I wonder if there's any updates anyone can share there.  Unfortunately the guy who started the thread, AgentProvocateur, and other contributors there aren't active here anymore.

That Evil Dead II quad is amazing.

I'd seen the reprints of it before and never realized it was based on an actual poster. Just always thought it was fan art or something - until I got into this hobby haha.

Thats where we differ, I'd have got him to sign it in a heart beat.. :D

Well we spent the weekend there, selling our prints, helped out a bit by bringing his posters to the convention centre.
Spent the evenings in the bar chatting with him and a few others, pretty sure if I change my mind he'll do it for me! Question is do I spend the time getting it linen backed?

Aside from fold creases, is there any damage, tears, pinholes etc on it? Looks to be in great shape. Maybe try The Wait & Weight™ method for a while to flatten the fold lines, before you decide to put it on linen?

Just a few pin holes in it. It's been flattened for a while by the looks of it. Need to have a better look. Quoted €160 to linen back it. Not sure it's worth it really.
Guessing it will never warrant that extra cash.

Is that 160 GBP price a quote from a UK-based backer?

Tho with it being the artist, would make it like many posters that have the signature or name printed on the front.

Got to be the front..

I have a Raiders signed by Brian Bysouth, and he signed the back... it's not quite the ticket having to turn it over, and it won't frame right...

Not 100% sure it's on there but I'm guessing that most artists sign their work. Need to unroll it and check it out.

Agree... it's another menacing visual, for sure.

The overuse of the original shark coming up from the depths, as well as the same "above the waterline" reincarnations in the sequels, all got to be a bit repetitive and it lost some of its visual punch, imho.

Got a load of quads this month, here's a couple.

First one Swiss Army Man have been after for a while, and found one discarded in the store at work.

And new UK Quad for release of Colassal.

Nice pickups, both, Deke and poster art. And to find a discarded quad (or any poster) ready for the trash can, is certainly an added plus.

Deke, the one poster you got is backed. Just curious (this is a general question).. when you have posted various of your new acquisitions that are backed, did you have the work done? Or did you buy them already backed? The work looks really nice, too.

And the artwork is also beautiful on both of these.  mexicohappy.gif

I can't recall why they were created or released. The Alien 1994R was used theatrically, but I'm not sure abut the SW titles.

The Jessica posters if I remember correctly were purely commercial releases as were the Roger Rabbit faux posters

some o fthe titles were printed in large numbers, others no.

when I sell them, I refer to them purely as 'Killian posters' except the Alien which I list as 1994R

The Hitch-Hiker looks interesting. Have you seen the movie? Is it any good? I do like Edmond O'Brien. He's a fine actor.

Jeff, The Hitch-Hiker is a great little noir movie directed by Ida Lupino, one of the very few female director in Hollywood in the 1950s (of course she was more well-know as an actress, but still).  Definitely recommended viewing.

Thanks, Chris.

Ive always enjoyed Lupino's acting work and had forgotten she also directed. I will, for sure, check it out.

Well, boys and girls, I may not buy too often any more, but when I do....

These are two grails for me, and there is one heluva story around how they made their way to me after years and years.  This might be the longest transaction of my collecting history.

Anyway, there they are.  I don't know if you'd call them B0's or subways, but they are unique, rare, and quite special.  Forgive the glare. They are very glossy and it wasn't an easy shot to get with my phone.

Very cool!

What size are those exactly, Holiday? In inches, I mean. Are they bigger than a B0?

That's awesome.  What took so long to acquire them?  A collector who finally decided to offer them for sale to you, or just waiting for them to appear for sale somewhere?

In any case, congrats.  Those are beauts.

Thanks all,

Yes, those are the ones from the mess a long time ago.  Carson and I mended fences and this is part of what worked out.  Worth the wait!

I'll measure them when I get back home - traveling to Atlanta and North Carolina today :)

Congrats on the recent pickups, Chris.

I always found the imagery on that particular The Nest poster both a little disturbing and, yet, alluring at the same time.  >:D

Cool 80s horror.

Thanks, Jeff. I went on a bit of a B movie tear for a bit. I came across a developer who found a box of folded one sheets from Roger & Julie Corman produced films in the storage space of their old production offices before it was demolished. He was getting rid of a bunch of them on the cheap, so I grabbed a bunch.

Grabbing a bunch and on the cheap is always a great combo!
