I was told to post some of my new acquisitions more often.  It's been a month or so, so here are a few...  Some a little expensive, some dirt cheap, all fun!  ALL folded or rolled!

BEAUTIFUL haloween set!!! like them LOTS!

I'm cheating a bit here as ive had these 2 posters YEARS, but only just pulled them out to photgraph, the tube they arrived in had been submerged under water! when i opened the plastic tube water came out! needless to say i had to be SUPER careful with them from that point on. obviously the rarest of them recieved the worst damage. although i have to say flattening them out for a few years has done wonders for them :D

i dont actually have any idea how they got dunked? i have a feeling that the post office monkeys saw a plastic tube and thought................ "how can we ruin this?" and proceeded to throw it in the bath? at this point i hadnt bought too many posters on ebay, and hadnt sold at all, so didnt know how finicky you can be on there. the seller did an EXCELLENT job of packaging as the posters were also in a plastic bag inside the plastic tube. but all this did was keep in lots of water! the seller was also less than helpfull when i told him he just kept saying i had to make a claim, which was obviously BOLLO! anyway i gave up and left it, which i wouldnt these days. i would make the post office PAY FOR IT!
both posters still have a little rippling, but the salon kitty had some suface lift off when i seperated the posters mostly on the left column at the top and a couple of other smaller areas, but i guess its still worth the $50 i paid for it? as it dosnt seem to crop up much.

Yes, it's true, I do not collect Daybills.  Not a fan of the format, and not a fan of designs portraying actors and actresses I do not recognize.  But I do make an exception when it comes to my little niche collections.

I agree with you there, T. Nothing worse than when someone is not only unrecognizable, but has also been hit with the ugly stick or drawn with what looks like a 7 year old's hand. Especially beautiful actresses.  uhno

But Bardot looks to have been spared that fate on most of yours.

Glad to know I'm not missing anything.  It means I'm officially done with the title.  I needed those Marlers and the Halloween 2 B1 I got a month ago to complete the set.  Now I can cross it out.  Same with Texas Chainsaw.  I still needed the LC set and the quad, and now I have them.  In my book, Halloween and TCM are (along with Suspiria) the 3 most important horror flicks of the 70s.

But there are still so many titles to complete.  Alright, back to work.

100% right.  Forgot about it.  I was never a real fan, I'm more into the slasher, but it was and still is groundbreaking.

Im a huge Exorcist fan. And it was sort of the flick that spawned all the later demon/devil/possession movies that were to follow. All are basic re-tells of the same story, for the most part.
Title: Re: April 2017

To a smaller extent of influential 70s horrors, how about CARRIE and JAWS (if you count JAWS as horror, that is...)?
Title: Re: April 2017
Post by: eatbrie on April 06, 2017, 07:34:53 PM
I don't count Jaws as a horror flick.  It's a thriller with horror undertones.  Carrie is good but not groundbreaking.  And you're right, Jeff, Exorcist deals with the occult while TCM and Halloween are the slasher kind.  Two different threads.

An arrival today.

An Australian OS for The Brothers Karamazov (1958)

I didnt realize from the seller's pic that this was done in hand lithography (almost identical in appearance and technique to stone lithography). So that was a neat, unexpected surprise. And it looks like it's as fresh as the day it was printed, too.

And even though the art and overall layout looks the same as that on the US OS, the AU art has been re-drawn and is not just "cut and pasted" from the US poster.

Appreciate it, Shawn and Chris.

The 8mm is super cool Shawn, a mix of the positive and negative image of Cage's face that doesn't completely come across in the posted image. Got it for $3 in Bruce's fixed price section.

The minimalism of the A Cure For Wellness design is what drew me to it Chris. In a world of 'floating head' new release designs, I loved the clean, sleek look of it. I haven't had a chance to see the film yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks, Shawn. Its all about picking and choosing the stuff that "calls to me." No rush here. Adding one piece at a time (or maybe a few here and there).

And on the flipside, I really like your Turkish Carrie. The art is so different and unique. That's what will pull me in, too, many times.

Congrats on the pick up.  thumbsup.gif

Some lovely posters already for this month. Congrats guys.
Two purchases so far for me this month, here's one I bought last night from Bruce and co.

The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll Italian by Luigi Martinati

I've admired Martinati for a while now and seeing T's collection of them made me want to own one. As you well know some are verrrrrry expensive but this was a good price and the image kinda jumped out on me when I saw this one.

I'd take a pic of the second one if I could but the dam postman tried to deliver the package at 7am this morning when everyone was in bed! No knock at the door just chucked a card through and scarpered so that has to be redelivered.
Can't wait to share it with you guys.

Ive had a similar thing happen a couple times, too, Marc.

One time, it was a Saturday, and I was home from work and knew a parcel would be arriving that day, per the USPS tracking info. I heard the mail carrier downstairs and when I opened my door, there was no parcel and in my mailbox was one of those slips they use, when delivery was attempted, but no one is home to receive it! The carrier had not even bothered to come up 2 small flights of stairs to see if I was home.

Luckily, I caught him down on the sidewalk, gave him the signed slip and got my parcel. When I told him I was home and asked why he didnt come up and knock, he claimed he had. That was totally false, but I was just happy to get my poster that day, rather than waiting another 24 hrs.

Here's hoping you get yours today, too, Marc (Sat).

Here's my contribution to April. I snagged this gem a week ago from emovieposters, with two more awesome additions coming this week. Since I'm a newbie at this my eyes were definitely starting to get bigger than my wallet. I've decided to collect the "Friday the 13th" series in an attempt to keep myself from going crazy. I had to start with this iconic image from the series. I always loved part 8 when I was a kid, so it was fitting for it to be my first poster. Hi,

It has been a long time since I posted any pictures, but I recently acquired some new items:

Jeff,
That's what I read too. That was the biggest reason why I snatched it up while I could. I read that apparently some New York officials weren't pleased with the artwork, so it was pulled and replaced with something different. I love this poster, and perfectly represents the tongue-in-cheek attitude of the series. I just snagged a part 3 poster! Just waiting for it to arrive.

Hey Joe... sounds right... and I was trying to remember too, if it had something to do with the copyrighted saying of "I Love NY" and whether they got permission to use that for the artwork.

And Matt... those Swanson pieces are killer!! I think she's awesome and they look in great shape, too. Congrats on picking those up. clap clap

Nice Jason poster.  I got mine signed by Kane Hodder, who plays Jason in VII, VIII, IX and X.  I didn't know better back then and thought having someone sign my poster was cool and worth something.  I need to get another poster without his signature.

Hey Posterfanatic---such a marvelous first acquisition for the FRIDAY THE 13TH series...and one of the better posters in the series.  Good luck in your first search for the F13 titles.

MATT, I really like your TRADE WINDS poster. Yowza! Those old ones really do it for me. But then I saw the Gloria Swanson lobby cards---WOW! Are those ever cool. Congrats!

T

How about the Halloween 'Count-down' quad? Not an inspiring design but would be good to have. You can see it on Ed's site as it's featured in the Halloween advertising guide he's added. It also shows off your Marler Hayley set quite nicely too!

It's on the filmonpaper website, I can't quite work out what the link is but it's one of the new entries. Quite an interesting campaign book.

I can understand why the poster isn't very desirable, like T said, it's just text. Probably a case or rare but not valuable.

I wonder if the lettering on that count down style was various colors of dayglo text against a black background? If so, that could be kind of cool looking.

Give it up to Ed to always find the most interesting stuff.  I don't collect press books (used to years ago but threw them all away), but it's good to see what a Halloween display would have looked like.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

Thai one sheet poster

The poster is in a protective sleeve that was gently creased so that created a bit of glare and what look like fold marks.

Gnaw: Food of the Gods II (1989); Thai one sheet poster

Art by Chamnong Tardging

(Also in a protective sleeve. Sorry for the glare and mylar-produced crease images. Better pix to come).

Thanks, Shawn, and yeah, Ive always liked the look of many Thai posters... more so the ones with created (painted) art, but I always enjoyed the first HP flicker and had never seen a Thai poster for it before. And the bloody red dog print on RD, while used elsewhere, also caught my eye.

I see it's backed. Looks like the poster was in fine shape, pre backing? Was any (or much) retouching done to it, as far as you can tell?
Title: Re: April 2017
Post by: timelessmoviemagic on April 13, 2017, 02:47:58 PM
Jeff,

There were a few holes in the red area of the poster which were noticeable. The fold lines are still there and there are a few creases here and there (not really that noticeable to be honest)

I think because of the holes it had to be backed.

Overall I'm really happy with it. John Hazleton has had one for a while now on Ebay and we briefly spoke a year ago (when the £ was strong) about doing a deal.

I got this one for 60% less than that one so got to be happy with that.

Nice 3 sheets, foreign stuffz, etc. so far this month.

I picked up this one yesterday.  I drove about an hour yesterday, to see the film at the the only theater anywhere near here that screened it.  Another great work from Mr. Malick.

When it ended, I went to the counter and asked the manager if they had an extra poster, and he reached to a shelf and handed it to me.  Surprisingly, the film was only shown at about 50 theaters.  For a newer film, there are not many of these posters are around.

Surprisingly, the film was only shown at about 50 theaters.

Not surprisingly.  Malick has become unwatchable to most, and the flick actually died in the 50 theaters it was showing.  I like Malick, but sometimes I wonder how he managed to finance his films and get a release platform at all.  Broad Green is such a small distributor, though, they'll take what they can get.

Thanks, y'all.  Yeah, the time it took to ask, receive it, and say thanks, was about 10 seconds.  If only all transactions were that smooth.

Interesting points, T.  Mr. Malick's work is very polarizing, indeed.

The cinematography and overall energy of his films are like no other. There is usually an exceptional cast, etc.  It was cool to see this one filmed in Austin, TX.

I was told to post some of my new acquisitions more often.  It's been a month or so, so here are a few...  Some a little expensive, some dirt cheap, all fun!  ALL folded or rolled!

US: Postman Always Rings Twice insert, Clockwork Orange OS X Rated, La La Land Bus, Vertigo OS, (http://Hang 'Em High) 6 Sheet, Fearless Vampire Killers 3 sheet, Love in the Afternoon LC set, Funny Face LC set, 2001 LC set...

Australian: En Cas de Malheur Daybill

French: Jules et Jim Medium

German: Lolita A0

Japanese: Alien B1, Guardians of the Galaxy B1

Polish: Star Wars and Jedi

UK: Texas Chainsaw Quad, Halloween Marler Haley Double Crowns (Along with the quad, which I got earlier, I think this is the complete set)

That's all for now.  As usual, there is way more stuff at Eatbrie.com (http://Eatbrie.com)

T

Love all the Kubrick stuff, T. The original 2001 LC set is my Holy Grail right now, but I just can't seem to find a complete one in good condition. eBay had one with lots of pinholes...not buying. Fantastic additions to your collection. I'm drooling.

Crazy Vick: Thank you for the birthday wishes===and for tracking down the movie weapon database!

Jeff: Thanks for trying to clarify. Ha!

I understand your desire for all of the F13 one sheets--I have them too--but really, the designs for 2, 4, and 5 are awful/wasted for such an iconic series in my opinion (but, as i said, I have them anyway...) Good luck to you.

It's a dog eat dog world out there, Shawn, as we all know.  ;D

And nice grabs, PF84. It's really something that the same shark iimage was used for so many of the Jaws sequels. Classic, instant identification.

Hi Jeff. As I said on my thread, I've heard of the film but have never seen it, so I don't know. But that was my initial thought as well, a James Bond knock off.

Hello Friends! I have two new posters to show off! This week I snagged a beautiful copy of Friday the 13th part 3 and the so bad, it's good Jaws 3-D. I love everything about the art on these posters, and now I'm one step closer to completing my Friday the 13th collection. If anyone knows where I can snag a copy of Part 1 and 2, please let me know!

Interesting to see the artistic variations that were done to the original art for this one...

Congrats on the pickup, PF84!  thumbup

Diabolik is more science fiction than Bond is and can almost be described as a mash of Bond, Modesty Blaise and Barbarella

Happy Easter!

CHEERS!

WHOA!!! danger diabolik is a FANTASTIC MOVIE!!!!! its a real shame it hasnt got a BR release though. saying that it took about 20 years to get a release on DVD!
really funtastic film thats for sure. its based on an italian fumetti comic like a bunch of characters that also spawned from the same place like sadistik etc.

been a while since i posted, taking pics is a PAIN!
anyhoo onwards and upwards i guess?
this is a few of the frenchies ive picked up.
mostly not in stellar condition, but then again i didn't pay stellar prices either. these all came in at LOW prices :)

quite an average movie, but i like the simplicity of the poster.
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1447_zpst0unb2h7.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1447_zpst0unb2h7.jpg.html)

odd looking design on this, quite comic bookish. nice litho print though with really heavy inking, the back of the poster is almost as clear as the front!
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1448_zps0qy3xqlc.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1448_zps0qy3xqlc.jpg.html)

i only have a couple of posters by P Marty, but i have to say i like the way they look. this is a great looking poster. not seen the movie but im guessing its bobbins from what ive read haha
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1451_zpsufptgmij.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1451_zpsufptgmij.jpg.html)

seen this film and it really is rubbish! but this is probably my fave out of this last bunch of french posters. the colours POP!
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1452_zpscv8ilx9p.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1452_zpscv8ilx9p.jpg.html)

very pleased with this. i dont have nearly as many godzilla posters as i would like. mainly because they cost too damn much on the whole. this had a large split on one of the folds but its taped up nicely.
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1455_zpsd52lmk6t.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1455_zpsd52lmk6t.jpg.html)

this was the most expensive of the bunch. although saying that still a bargain and well under what they usually sell for, this is in very nice shape too. also i think this is pretty much the last ilsa poster i wanted, as far as i know i have all the ones i want. i dont have them all but i have all the designs i want or need for that matter.
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1459_zpsb7brbthj.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1459_zpsb7brbthj.jpg.html)

meh i have to say this quad while it dosnt show up much, i was a bit underwhelmed, when it arrived. just a bit boring i think? nice fresh poster though very white!
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1462_zps9rliklu7.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1462_zps9rliklu7.jpg.html)

and finish with a couple of modern quads. handmaiden is a FANTASTIC movie!! loved it. and with most of wooks movies they seem to have nice posters too. i wonder if hes responsible for that?
(http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah159/teamweaponss/IMG_1468_zpsgxoakpux.jpg) (http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/teamweaponss/media/IMG_1468_zpsgxoakpux.jpg.html)

this film is one of the best ive seen in the last 5 years, maybe even 10? absolutely incredible visually! story is lets say.. some what loose? haha. i would heartily reccomend seeing at the cinema if you get the chance :)

Nice shelter there, Chris. A hefty size, too, at 4x6. How's the printing quality? Crisp and sharp? (Tho in a size like that, and meant to be viewed from a distance, I guess it wouldn't be the same as that done on a OS?)

Jeff, I was surprised at how sharp it remained in the upscale. The quality loss is very, very minimal.

Paul, appreciate the conversion there! It sounds more impressive when you put the measurements in those terms  ;D

How does this always seem to happen? I had not received a notification from this page in days and decided to look anyway...and voila! Loads of poster goodness. (And then I got a notice stating there was something new added. Ha!)

DAMO: Great pick ups with the CASINO ROYALE posters. I did not realize there were more styles. I thought there was only one UK version.

SEAN: Thanks for the info on DANGER: DIABOLIK. I really will need to track it down. And your new additions---WOW!  As a fan of the series, my fave was , of course, the ILSA poster. Zowie!

RANDY: Good luck with your daybill. i saw it on eMovie and thought about "watching" it to possibly buy. It's such a cool poster. BUT I really need to STOP my bad habit of buying the same posters over and over.

CHRIS: That ALIEN: COVENANT is a stunner. WOW!  And so HUGE! I love the picture. The perspective of seeing it on my desktop screen makes it seem like your son is hanging from a wall next to the poster. Ha!

DEKE: Ooooo that IS a stunner. Beautiful art and a fantastic poster. Ole!

BRAVO everyone.

Good to know, Chris. It looks crystal sharp in your pic. And the "3 yr old scale" was a brilliant and fun way to show it.  ;D

Is the upper left part more lit due to a light you had there? Or is the image that way? Either way, it's cool and gives a bit of a spotlight effect.
Title: Re: April 2017
Post by: Chris9000 on April 23, 2017, 01:25:22 AM

Thanks, Jeff.

Regarding the upper left, it's a bit of both. That part of the image features a light that is being shown down from above (I can only guess to continue the numerous biblical references / themes in Prometheus) , but there is also a window about four feet from that corner as well.

Oh boy.   pcorn

Cool POTC poster there, Paul. Im not a huge fan of this type of design where all the characters are looking right at the camera (or the viewer) like this, as it looks too posed (for me), but the character at the top gives it an added "creepy" factor.

Another The Mummy flick. The way they keep churning these out, they will grind the genre into dust, literally.

the problem I see with all these films is the same thing with the Batman movies each time they get a "franchise director'.
Each one wants to recreate the legend of the character & destroy any film-to-film continuity, diluting the character.

Zowie, Sean! Love those Nazisploitation posters, especially the first. You did a fine job "saving" them.

Banned in Norway back in the day :

-naziploitation
-martial arts
-certain horror films (Chainsaw , Maniac , Cannibal Holocaust among others)

This is a bit of a cheat because I actually bought this poster in March and not in April, but since I only joined APF this month, I couldn't post it earlier.  Anyway, here's my favorite recent acquisition, an unrestored 6-sheet for The Leopard Man (1943), directed by Jacques Tourneur as part of the great RKO horror cycle produced by Val Lewton.  I have the one-sheet for that movie, which is quite lovely, but I had never seen this format before and I find the art really stunning.

And HA does great photography/lighting to make all the fold lines disappear. It's all about the correct key and fill lighting. Works every time on posters (and faces).  :) And maybe they also use a vacuum table to help flatten this (or any) folded poster?

And HA does great photography/lighting to make all the fold lines disappear. It's all about the correct key and fill lighting.

it also has to do with having a photography stand with a large surface and a glass plate cover that comes down & presses posters flat for photography, in order to eliminate folds and the like for shooting pictures

Nice pickups, poster art!

Those Polish ones are awesome. The poster for Come And See is really an eye grabber (no pun intended). ;)
Their art concepts and designs can really make you stop, look and think about the poster imagery.

Thanks Jeff!

If anyone has tabs on an original copy of the first and second film, please let me know.

Does anyone know if they released the original design for this poster? Or if any got printed? I think it was mostly the same, but the knife was bloodied and dripping down the poster.

Edit: The poster being Friday the 13th VIII - Jason takes Manhattan.

and here is something you don't often see.  A theater stamp on the back of the little accident card.  for a now defunct downtown L.A. theater

BENJAMIN... Oh my STARS!  That LEOPARD MAN six-sheet is GORGEOUS!  WOW!!!!  AMAZING catch. Color me JEALOUS to the nth degree. Bravo!

POSTER ART: Nice Polish pickups. Like Jeff, I especially like the imagery on "Come and See". :)  But I am really crazy for your TAXI DRIVER and MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

RAY STENSON: FRIGHT NIGHT and CREEPSHOW...you can NOT go wrong with either of those. Good job.

JAY---WOW! That AFRICAN QUEEN is cool...and that YELLOW SUBMARINE is wild. Awesome!

It's the END of the month (just about anyway)...what am I doing here? Well, I was saving this "Bonus Post" for April 30th, but am heading out of town tomorrow for a road trip. My next usual post (May 1st) is my LAST poster post for the summer (or longer?). This is a new BONUS post going up on my thread in just a moment to share some new acquisitions I don't have room for in my May 1st post. You can take a look or not.  Here is a preview:

Creepy looking image here, P.A. Very cool.

So is the majority of what Park Circus deals with older films? What % of their distribution would you say is re-release material as compared to new(er) flicks?

HI, The specialise in Classic Movies, cinema masterpieces and digital restoration of prints. Bank them out in a few specialised cinemas and then release on Blueray. I haven't done a full analysis of their releases to do a percentage but I know in the last couple of years then have been releasing a few specialised new European films. So I know that recently the have brought out Certain Women and The Eyes of My Mother (at least). I would hazard at a conservative guess at about 75/80% classic movies.

Of course I could be wrong but certainly I believe they are best known for the classic restorations the have been doing.

If you go hear you can browse through their releases. http://www.parkcircus.com/films (http://www.parkcircus.com/films)
