Title: February 2017
Post by: Harry Caul on February 01, 2017, 08:56:18 AM
Two rare Hungarian's to start off the month.  Love the simplicity of these of the regional designs.  And that A New Hope is probably one of the rarest Star Wars posters in existence.

Love the colors --especially on the STAR WARS poster. I agree with UNDEAD. Those are posters I have NEVER seen before., Great job!

Nice start to the month, all.

Matt, what size are those 2 posters?

Hungarian A2 -- the regional designs were only printed in the smaller size.

^ Thanks for the info, Matt. (Just putting this out there as a general FYI: Hungarian A2 size is approx 16 x 22 inches)

I had this arrive today. A rolled UK quad for the fun, monster-related flicker, Fade To Black (1980).

The art looks to be the same as that used on the US OS but unlike those, (most of) which look to have been folded, and creating that more easily seen "checkerboard" pattern due to the dark background of the art, this version was spared the machine fold lines. I was also very happy to see that this was not printed on glossy paper but was done in a more flat/matte printing style.

This was a movie I could relate to**, and I'm sure many kids could, loving monster movies, "Famous Monsters of Filmland," magazine and horror books and posters.

**Not the murder part, tho.  ;D

I got this canadian 1sh on tuesday. I know It's a brand new poster and usually people a showing antiques on this thread, but this poster from BOND design is saying a lot for itself and I really like it. It is a  little too much gun nut to put on a canadian living room wall but it will do the job at the theater for the next weeks to come.  It's the next Ben Wheatley movie FREE FIRE. He also directed High-Rise in 2015 who also have a really nice new poster.

I think that is the same one I was recently looking at on ebay, Paul, but never bid on. I liked it because of the name of the picture house - presumably named after the Elephant & Castle area in London?

It's been a while, but I've picked up a couple if thing here and there (Repo Man one sheet, a nifty Spirited Away B2 for DVD release with better art), but nothing like this.  I've been thriting a bunch over the past two years building up a very large board game collection and come across a few original posters, but nothing to write home about...

This is a post that I made to some of my board game friends, so pardon the explanatory nature. All except for the Dirty Dozen were originally folded, but rolled long ago....

I had my best thrift ever yesterday - one so large, that I ran out and donated some games, toys and puzzles that I'd just purchased in order to get a 30% off coupon...

I paid $288 for 48 film posters with a total value of over $1700 conservatively...

My previous primary field of collecting is film posters and I walked into a local Value Village and found the remnants of a well used and well loved collection of authentic movie posters dating from '67-84.

I came across a few bins labeled $4.99 each ($3.49 with the coupon), finding several minor interest titles in the $10-15 dollar value, then I pulled out this, which values out around $175 in this condition... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/archieleach/chinatown%20US%20one%20sheet_zpsprls7ibx.jpg)

Once I saw this, I knew that I was going to spend the next hour going through every single poster.  I also asked the manager if he had any others, to which he replied that they had pulled a few 'special and limited editions' for the collectibles area.

This is a common misunderstanding of the NSS code that appears on the bottom of vintage movie posters that were written with 'year' followed by # of the film released that year... such that 69/105 would indicated a release year of that this poster was for the 105th film registered with National Screen Service during 1969.  Not that it is the 69th print out of 105, which is what they thought.

Anyway, I found a few other special posters...

Paid $34.99 after 30% off.  Est. value $600  I was curious if I'd see anything from Star Wars (I didn't), but I did a double check when I saw 'Luke' stamped on the back of the poster... Then I realized what I had... I was shocked to open it up...

$34.99 cost, $100 value...

$6.99 cost for the original X-rated version, $100 value

$6.99 cost, $75 value...

Other titles included The Thing (’82), Creepshow, Strange Brew, Christine, Octopussy (adv), The Towering Inferno, Rocky III, Halloween III, Diner, The Deep, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid re-release and a bunch more...

Earlier in the week, I paid $14.99 for a nicely framed Patrick Nagel CN4 commemorative print released December 1984. Not in the range of a lifetime print, but one of the few post-death prints that has some value.

Sorry for the weird image... There is a current ebay listing for $580 with 25 watchers right now, for whatever that's worth...

Nice finds and discoveries there, archie. Your eyes must have looked the size of silver dollars when you began to unroll/unfold and see what was before you (before you realized and put your poker face back on  :) )

And congrats, basemem. Plus, I never realized that Eddie Murphy was flipping the bird on the UK OS.  ;D

And that Mona Lisa is beautiful.  thumbsup.gif   The art style almost reminds me of the art done in France in the '50s.

Waiting on a few Gene Tierney pieces to come (can't wait to show you guys) but I recently purchased this. It's no biggie, cost me less than a can of coke (not that I drink the stuff) but I like the art work, in particular the buildings in the background.

Been a big month for me.

I have been collecting the Saint Lobby cards for the last few years.  The films number nine movies with George Sanders, Louis Hayward and Hugh Sinclair variously taking up the mantle.

The cards have tended to come in dribs and drabs, the odd one here and there.  The collection took a step level up when I bought a bunch of cards from Morris Everett's Profile's auction, and thence once again, it all stopped.

Have been in touch with a fellow collector who specialises in Crime Noir LCs.  His collection is, no two ways about it, staggering.  But he has been about ready to consider the next step in his life whereupon the idea of thinning down the collection was a manifest consideration.

The consideration turned into a deal and a further 20 cards made their way to me.

While there are nine movies, there are 10 sets.  This is due to the fact that for The Saint's Girl Friday set, the Canadian market made a set variation that coloured the otherwise yellow letters on the US set, red.

I am now just six cards shy of completing the run.  But, as we know, 20% of the time can collate 80% of the collection.  And 80% of the time can be spent acquiring the remaining 20%...and then some.

The below represents not just the 20 cards, but the sets as I now have them.

Apologies for the size of the images.

I experimented with PostImage as Photobucket resource hogs the hell out of my machine and I realised for the 10 photos, I didn't have one whole month to wait for everything to chug through....

If anyone has any tips as to whether the above is correctable, be happy to hear.

It's so much fun to try to complete a set of something that is meaningful to you.  I think that's what collectors thrive on, the wait, the expectation, the dealing and the eventual acquisition.  It's all baby steps, but it's a fun road to travel.

Congrats, Simon. Looks like the patience, time, research and forging those connections is really paying off, especially for this series of films that are such a passion of yours.

And what great looking sets on top of that! Here's to your tracking down those remaining, elusive cards.

Thanks chaps.

Yes, the sets are in superlative condition bearing in mind New York was released in '38.

As the search for single cards progresses, it sometimes means having to buy a few to acquire the one.  But this means rougher cards can be more readily swapped out.  This being the case with a collection of six cards from a recent Bruce auction too.

Pride of place must go to the Saint / New York title card.  It is a beaut.

These arrived today. Four lobby cards from the Gene T flick China Girl (1942).

I have the 1sheet, Insert, French on this film but for some reason the lobby cards are really hard to come by.

Bruce has only sold 5 cards on his site.

Sooooo I couldn't believe my eyes when these four popped up on the bay. Did the deal off of Ebay to save the guy a few bucks as they were a really good price. A good deal all round.

Now I have to find the other four cards to complete the set!

I was just posting a note on my thread and thinking about TED's awesome DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS poster a while back...when it occurred to me I had not seen anything "new" posted on this thread. ARGH! Once again I somehow FAILED to set the notify thing for this page. D'OH!

JEFF, I LOVE your FADE TO BLACK quad. Bravo. That was also one of my first dozen or so posters. I had my copy hanging from the ceiling over my bed at one point. I, too, identify with the love of monster movies the main character has in the film. I need to revisit it. (I need to dig my poster out and frame it. It really takes me back...) CONGRATULATIONS on the score and THANKS for posting/reminding me about this poster.

Canadian1sh: I don't know the movie FREEFIRE at all, but love the multi-arm design. THAT is a winner.

SEAN: Thanks for the note. I wasn't actively looking for it. It just popped up.

ARCHIE: WOW! What a haul you got there. I've been trying to get a CHINATOWN forever.

BASEMAN: Nice catch yourself. i like the Euro 48 HRS and am thinking more and more I also need a LA LA LAND.

CHRIS: Your taste is right up my alley. I have a one sheet for each of those titles as well...but the HELLRAISER 2 is an advance. i don't have that (?). Bravo.

SIMES: No worry about the size. They are clickable, so we can still see them larger. Lots of lobby card fans popping up lately. You must feel quite at home.

MARC: Congrats! Another notch in your Gene Tierney belt. CONGRATS!

PAUL: You ALWAYS have the best stuff. It may not be the "prettiest" posted this month, but...WOW! What an awesome piece.

Thanks, Ted. I think the poster campaign for Rogue One eclipsed SW: TFA by far..love this one.

Jason. That's a killer Army of Darkness.. congratulations.

T., it is smaller, 18x24. Out of my wheelhouse as well generally, buy I was a huge fan of the design so I picked it up.

This is the ONLY way to buy a poster.  Buy it used and get it restored yourself so you know exactly what kind of work was done and you have pictures to prove it should you need to sell it.

I don't say it often, but this is great poster.  Color me jealous.

CHRIS and JASON--nice pick ups! The ROGUE ONE, I agree, is the nicest style I've seen for the film--and i am no STAR WARS fan. Bravo. The EVIL DEAD poster is simply awesome. It's colorful, chaotic and thumbs-up, four-stars campy brilliant.

GemGem: That is simply GORGEOUS!!!!!!! Oh my stars! STUNNING!

Happy (almost) Valentine's Day! Yes, if I'll put up a bonus post for Ground Hog Day and Fake Jan Day...do you think I'd leave out Valentine's Day? Hello? Love them or don't---here's the teaser preview. Not the best--but not the worst. The certainly pale in comparison to what is posted here already. Zowie!  I'll be posting it to my thread sometime after APF midnight strikes:

It seems (from a quick search) that it was released under both titles. I'd be curious to know how this came about, as both titles seem to be tied to the first release.

It LOOKS like THE AMAZING MR X title is the one that is more commonly used for the title. IMDB uses it and a quick search of Amazon yields a lot of DVDs with that AMAZING title--and very little with the SPIRITUALIST. I like THE SPIRITUALIST title better...it just sounds a bit more spooky (which is why i got mine...).

Can I ask what the dimensions are? Just curious since it's pre war.

It looks like a standard size Belgian, but I cant tell, for sure.  It's a beauty, regardless.

I really like The Great Dictator - good to see a classic poster getting the restoration it deserves. Also like that Belgian poster, Jeff, haven't seen it before.

I recently bought these:

(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o524/cartinmild1/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_bela_lugosi_zps1f15bzuf.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/cartinmild1/media/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_bela_lugosi_zps1f15bzuf.jpg.html)

(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o524/cartinmild1/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_laurence_olivier_zpspfzjgi0e.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/cartinmild1/media/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_laurence_olivier_zpspfzjgi0e.jpg.html)

They are part of a group of 34 portraits inserted into a 1935 copy of Kinematograph Weekly a bit like some of the major US studios used to advertise their coming season of films by advertising in Motion Picture Daily Herald. Kine Weekly was an oversized magazine so they are quite a good size - a little smaller than jumbo lobby cards for comparison. The subjects range from Lugosi, Fay Wray, Ann Harding, lured over to the UK in an effort to add a bit of prestige to a domestic production, to now largely forgotten UK players (Joan Gardner, Penelope Dudley Ward, anyone?). Also interesting to note that the Lugosi film was a Hammer Production. I always associate Hammer with their horror classics of the 50s and 60s but it shows how much longer a history they had.

They are unsigned so no idea who the artist may have been but most are striking likenesses.

Marc, I looked up Les Films Rene Schottey that is at the top of your poster, and it looks like they were a distributor in Belgium, possibly starting in the 1950s but I couldnt find that exact info.

HA sold this Belgian, for a film called Chained For Life (1952), with their name on it, as well. This was released in BE in 1956:

Yes Jeff I tried finding a bit more information about Les Rene Schottey as well but only came across the poster you mentioned from Heritage.
In fact I have that same poster lol.

That film featured the twins who starred in Freaks if I recall correctly.

Sadly they had a pretty rough life being exploited.

Sure sounds like it, Marc. Reading the little bio here on EMP that was included for this beautiful stage poster (Siamese Twins) showing both lovely sisters, sure sends that exploitation story home.  :'(

That's a huge misconception in my opinion.  No poster is too big or too small to share, too cheap or too expensive.  We all collect different things.  There are a lot of people on this forum posting stuff that I would never collect.  It doesn't stop me from appreciating it.  If someone posts a $3k poster, it should not stop you from posting a $15 poster you enjoy,  Chances are no one cares about the $3k poster, since it's out of reach to most, while everyone will enjoy your $15.

I definitely don't think it is as common (and your link is a good example I think). (Of course I'm open to being wrong).

It was a double win for me. The gallery had 2 star wars posters- this one, and a dated Revenge of the Jedi. I thought to myself, "as much as I always wanted ROTJ, I see them come up for sale often. I've only seen this Russian poster in a book, AND I think it's cool. Let me get this one now instead..."

So I don't usually share my new gear on this thread, 1) because I have a website and it would be redundant, 2) because I buy more than 100 posters a month and it would be overwhelming, and 3) because nothing excites me enough to post.  But once in a blue moon I get something that truly works for me.  Like this Swan Italian poster by Ercole Brini (55x78in) I recently acquired.

Probably means nothing to most, I get that, but I consider Grace Kelly the most beautiful actress to have ever graced the silver screen, and this is one of the better posters of her.

Hi All!

I haven't been here in awhile, only because I've really had nothing to share lol. And since I'm new to collecting, I don't think I have anything to add to the conversation. But that was then, this is now...
I gave myself a Russian Star Wars poster for Christmas : )

Welcome aboard, as others have said it does not matter what a poster is worth, it matters if you like it, so post anything that makes you happy.

Great and hard piece to get to start things off with!

JASON, congrats on THE GOONIES. I don't believe I've ever  seen that "map style" OS before. Nice. And i really like the ROGUE ONE international style a lot. Of course, you always have awesome stuff.

THIERRY, I KNOW you have your website, but it is HUGE and easy to miss things. But when you get treasures like this (and I think others would agree with me on this), I wish you would share them more often. BRAVO.

GARGOYLE67, love it all. Like many others on here, we seem to share similar tastes. Except for the WOLVERINE (I'm not a superhero kind of guy) and the FIREFOX (what is that? Never heard of it---I don't think.), those could be posters right out of my own collection. Literally. WELL DONE pal. You may be still a "beginner" but you are well on your way.

Applause-o-rama all around to all of you.

Shawn. Its actually a US one sheet for Dolby cinemas only. It does share the same art as the Russian one sheet released in December and the minis that were given out on opening day. It is presumed from seeing the shipping label on the box from the studio that 50 of the 56 Dolby cinemas received two posters each for a total of 100 produced. The label states "Label #29 of 50"
A good number of them probably have already been trashed by now too. I know of 4 that were trashed.

Looks like emp has sold at least one of this style, but way back in Feb of 2005 (as a couple of the earlier auctions have no accompanying images to show which style those were):

Thanks Jeff.  Yeah, I don't buy there.  If I seem to recall correctly, their customer service is awful, so bad that I had to go thru Paul to get something shipped to me, they overcharge and they don't show you detailed pictures of their gear unless you ask for it.  Seems like they're 10 years behind everybody else.

I don't really have any burlesque-type paper in my collection, so when I saw this oldie for $10 I decided to snag it.
Good condition, with some paper loss at the c-fold that I didn't notice till after I pulled the trigger.

So, I got a second package today, a big box that I figured for my son (as we have the same name) and it didn't look like anything I am expecting.
So, he gets home and opens it and in it are five poster tubes.
What's this?
A-ha!
One of my UK buddies ordered some posters for me to ship across the pond.
Amongst them was one for ME!
He follows my Tumblr blog so he thought I'd like it..
Nope, he was wrong... I LOVE IT!!

I have several that came out of the deal I got from Canada, they are about 100% from tiny run independent film releases, i assume just from a cost perspective that is why they ran that size.

What year is that Casablanca quad from, Eric? Looks like it says Park Circus in the lower right corner?

2007 Park Circus

Eric, is your quad double sided?

And it's interesting that this other Park Circus 2007RR quad has the added info line added: "In Association with TCM"

According to the emp description, this copy is single sided. I wonder if double sided versions with the TCM info were also made.
And I wonder why some of these quads have that additional TCM line if the RR was done in the same year?  dontknow.gif

Is it also under-sized?  Dale listed the Canadian as 24x36".

27x40.

and while I'm at it, something else I've been meaning to post 18x24

Awesome, Zodiac... totally underrated film IMHO. From your private collection, or plans to auction it?

Way back in 1974, I saw this image in a magazine (maybe Famous Monsters) and, try as I might, I couldn't locate a copy of the poster anywhere.
I wrote some letters (no internet back then) but nobody could help, so I eventually gave up.
Then just a few days ago, my Ebay search showed up and there it was, with a buy it now for the price of a modern poster.
Its not an actual movie poster, but a poster advertising a photo-book with stills and dialogue from the 1931 classic.
Its larger than a one-sheet at 30x45 and doesn't have the printer's color bar at the bottom (as this is a stock photo).
Its rolled (as originally issued) and near mint condition with not a single ding or crease.
The colors are still vibrant for a 43-year-old poster and I am one happy camper.

Great story, and awesome poster.  Brilliant image and colors with the monster and the Dr., and profound quote.

You must have been stoked to see that listing after all those years, and in that good of condition, to boot.  Perseverance pays off.

I recall this poster, too, from my Famous Monsters of Filmland days. I always thought it was a really neat looking poster. Great color and graphics.

Nice pickup, Ted and be sure to post your copy when it arrives, too!  thumbup

I didn't think this was such an odd question seeing as he sells/auctions posters, and Dale posted his 'Audition' which is currently up for sale...

Chris

Because I believe in 'rulez' I would not be posting anything that involves selling in discussion threads. I think it is a no-no.
there are plenty of places here for me to post FS/FA without injecting guerilla marketing techniques into discussion threads.

sometimes I may have duplicates of course, but I still don't offer them via acquisitions threads

sadly, I do not have any dupes of the Zodiac poster

Hey man, no need to explain yourself. I totally get it, and appreciate that most folks on here post where posts belong. That being said, if someone comes across an acquisition that they are keen on, but up to the possibility of selling, i.e. Dale's Audition, I don't have a big issue with that either. Which is why I asked.

My post was more geared towards Jeff's reply, that I saw as unnecessary.

I agree, but posting the same emoji three times without a word seems pretty 7th grade to me and again, unnecessary. If you can't see why I would take exception to it, then it would be a waist to both of our time trying to explain it.

Moving on...

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But i would suggest that you will find many posts scattered throughout the forum where people have quickly made use of emoticons in lieu of writing a response.

And, yes... moving on.
