Title: Tyler Stout
Post by: eatbrie on August 31, 2010, 06:29:44 PM
I think the guy deserves his own thread.  He's my personal favorite, so that's what you get.

Anyhow, his "Let the Right One In" poster goes on sale tomorrow, thru lottery.  Both regular and variant.  He has about 250 posters for sale.

I think TS is very talented and he has done some great posters .. BUUUUTTTTT ,, there are time I think he should self edit .. and pull away from the now expected cramming of every major and big supporting characters likeness onto a single piece of paper .. I mean if he likes them all that much do a series and showcase the characters properly ! .. Just my $.02

No doubt he is very talented.... but I have to agree with fallen...his art is just a bit too busy for me...
Sometimes less is more, y'know?

I do really like this LET THE RIGHT ONE IN piece. It seems to really capture the mood of the film.

T, do you have other examples of his work to post other than Alamo prints?

It really is a catch22, once you are known for something, if you try to stray from that then you do not please your core audience. I say stick with it he obviously has a huge following.

I will say, to me, his art looks like the old fuzzy posters you would buy with the 4 markers to color; but what the hell, I thought those were cool  ;D

Here is a pretty good list of his movie work. I don't own everything though so there are a few missing plus this new one.

i find that its getting boring, for some reason whenever i look at a poster it has the title 70-75% down the page and heads plasterd all over it like mount rushmore.. every time.

Thanks Thierry, Chad for the galleries. I can certainly see the attraction. He is extremely talented.

My favorite I think might be the non-film piece that fallen has posted above.  Very dramatic. What are the dimensions on that one?
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: guest8 on September 01, 2010, 11:07:12 AM
Its only 5" x 5" but priced accordingly ... there is a gold version as well .. i think the gold had a smaller run and was slighty more expensive (typical for a variant) but i liked the red better.:)

If you do a search for stout on postersandtoys.com it shows about 80 different stout pieces non.film film and gig posters. Obvioulsy most are sold out but it looks like some are in stock.

Yeah the Red one is better. I have this piece too, but I don't list it on my website as it's not movie related. Very cool art though that is for sure.

My attraction to Tyler's work is this. A lot of these movies I really really really enjoy. And if you are a big fan of them when you look through the collage you see things from the movie that are usually small in detail and hidden in the artwork. To me it's like anyone who really knows the film well will get these things. Plus his artwork is really good.

I agree the less is more, but that is what I can buy from someone else, which is what makes this hobby cool. Olly Moss is no Tyler Stout, but both make some kick ass shit. You have to appreciate them for what they are. Picasso and Van Gogh are different people with different styles, but when I go to the art museum and see their stuff on the wall, I can appreciate their style and hard work.

Fallen, thanks for the link.  I've never been there before and it is an eye opener. "Migration" is a kick-ass piece.

Chad, well put.  Over the years, I have taught many youngsters who want to draw that there are many different styles, most with great merit despite their different approaches.

Now, methinks I will have to pick up "Migration" ...

At the end of the day, it's all in the eye of the beholder.  But if I had to frame one print of all the ones I own, it would be, with no hesitation...

I'm curious. How much money do you think Stout's pulling in a year from these posters? Anybody want to hazard a guess? 50k 100k a year more? What kind of percentage would he make on a poster?

Ah!  Sorry, Jon, I could part with a lot of things, but not any of my Stouts, and certainly not The Thing.  This said, they do pop up on Ebay from time to time, and I know you have deep pockets, Jon.  The last 4 regular sold for $700+.

I got one. I bought the standard version, I think the red made the print pop more and the glow areas of the variant didnt excite me all that much. The quad version is too big to store in the portfolio's.

I got picked too.  I ended up getting the quad although the price was a little steep.

I agree with Dale about liking how the red makes the poster stand out a little more.

I don't know, but  probably not all that much.  He was selling the regular version for $45.  After printing costs, how much does he make on something like that? I have always found it weird how the secondary market works for stuff like this, but if Il Grande Lebowski sells for $700 on eBay, it's not like Tyler is getting a cut of that.  I am sure he and other artists do fine, but I don't think you get rich making posters unless you sell them for more than $45 or stash some away and cut them loose after the fact if you need a few bucks.

Hmm .. I had been considering picking up one of those LTROI posters .. But I dont know if I like the GID version .. It just seems to be lacking something with out the blood .. although I bet it looks awesome in the dark .. How often do we have a piece out in the daylight long enough to get the GID paint charged up then look at it in total darkness? ;)

AWESOME!!!  More for us :)

Tyler is my fav, period (shit, I hope Martin doesn't read this :).  And a great pal to boot.  He's one of the few artists who really has a style of his own, and I cannot commend him more.

Mel, to each his own.  I wish there were more like u.  Then maybe I could find my Lost Boys and pay less than 1k for it.

I for one am more or less baffled by the art print market... I don't get why any of these posters should be valued more than a few hundred, let alone north of a grand.

Think of the actual theater paper you could get for $1500!? A Pulp Fiction lucky strike sold for $750 today on eBay (no to me). I bought my NM Diamonds are Forever quad for $375. Is that Thing poster really worth more than both combined?  Look at Bruce's incredible Halloween auction and ponder what a grand or more will get you.

Sure, Stout can draw nicely... but the prices he has been getting lately are absurd.

It's really all about quantity vs. demand. Stout said he never thought these things would be selling so high many years later. He as a lot of people know that many of his posters sat on Mondo's for weeks and sometimes months until they sold out. He's not getting the money it's the people who are reselling them that are getting their money back and more. Where he benefits is that it helps him sell out new releases.

How many Lucky Strikes posters are there compared to how many Stout Blade Runner Variants or Thing posters? I'm just fortunate that I have both and I don't have to worry about which will be worth more in the future because I plan to keep both providing nothing tragic happens in my life.

I think good artwork hits people like the older posters that were drawn up by artists for the movie studios. Plus a lot of people love the B movie posters and 70's exploitation posters because they are usually better than the movies they represent. This doesn't include everyone, because many people love the movie posters of today that are photoshoped and have the face of their favorite actor or actress taking up 90% of the poster.
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: Harry Caul on October 29, 2010, 11:57:38 AM
Don't get me wrong, I understand well what logistical factors will help drive up price... scarcity, quality of artwork, and most of all demand.  This is exactly what our hobby lives and dies on.

What I don't understand is this particular demand side and what rational factors would lead someone to prioritize a Thing or Blade Runner tribute poster that was printed just 2 short years ago over say... the original 1951 Thing From Another World 1-sheet in unbacked VF- condition ($1195 at HA in July (http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=7025&Lot_No=83655)). Or any number of other vintage, studio-issued posters (Them! 1-sheet, the stunningly gorgeous Attack of the Crab Monsters 1-sheet, Out of the Past R53 1-sheet @ $1434, Rear Window insert @ $1314, Laura HS and African Queen 1-sheet @ $1195... all of which sold in the same auction).

Again, I think everyone one of us should have our heads examined for what we spend on little pieces of paper... however, these folks are at the lunatic fringe IMO.  As has been discussed, I think there is an element of OCD and collecting for completion's sake that has taken over the art print market.

Pot, Meet Kettle  ;D

Post by: kovacs01 on October 29, 2010, 12:06:03 PM
Harry, I do not think most of the people paying those prices are movie poster collectors, but print collectors.  When looked at as a movie poster, the prices are most definitely ridiculous.  However, I think the lunacy is dampened somewhat when put in the art print context.  As an example, check out what Fairey and Emek's works are going for.
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: Harry Caul on October 29, 2010, 12:17:06 PM
Good point... but they are already approaching prices of some 50 year old prints from Warhol and Lichtenstein!  Madness!  I guess I'll just have to accept the fact that I won't be able to comprehend it and watch it continue to careen out of control.

Hi T,

I agree that those seem overpriced, but I would add one thing.  Many of the recent high prices realized came from Tim Doyle's collection.  Tim ran Mondo for a while as these prints came out before Justin took over.  There might be some premium attached these prices because of the seller.

I am not ready to drop that kind of coin on these or any Mondo stuff, but at the moment, there are apparently enough buyers to drive the price up.  The print runs are limited, but is there enough demand to sustain that price.  Who knows?

Well, after all is said and done, and even after his last impressive drop, "The Thing" remains my favorite of Tyler's composition.  There is something about it that, to me at least, is far superior to anything he's done.  And that's saying a lot, because I truly love the guy.  Maybe it's the coloring scheme.  For sure, the title is a big plus.

I think the only ones I have that you don't are as follows:

Blade Runner Variant, a Big Lebowski silver metallic variant, Big Trouble in Little China - regular, Hell Ride Variant, First Edition of Hell Ride Promo poster (used to raise funding to make the movie), Hot Fuzztival Variant, Let the Right One In - Quad Size (Its nice to see the biggest stout poster ever done in person), a regular version of The Road Warrior, the Lost Boys, the Best of QT Fest, and the Best of QT Fest variant.

Stout Collection (http://web.mac.com/supraman079/iWeb/Movie%20Poster%20Collection/Tyler%20Stout%20Collection.html)

I entered and managed to get a variant set.    8)

Now to track down a regular set.....

Like a few others I still need to track down Big Trouble in Little China (reg & var), Bladerunner (reg) as well.

Congrats!  I'm glad that some of these are going to forum members.

And good luck on Big Trouble.  I'm out of the game on this one.  The only way I will ever get it is by trading something.

Played the lottery but didn't win.  I guess I will look for a variant set or at least a Revenge variant through other means.
Looking forward to Mondo shipping so I can see these beauties in-person.

Based upon a post in the EB thread, I think Jonkino might have scored a regular set. Good for him if that's the case.

Wow, that's some collection. Trying to make us jealous? well you succeeded!

Oh well at least I got a late email from Tyler at 2.30 in the morning (UK time) and bagged which must have been one of his last sets. Pleased, now I have 7 Stouts! A mere pittance compared to eatbrie wicked collection!!

Are you talking about my prints collection?  Yeah, I like it.  But I'll let you in on a little secret.  It doesn't matter at all.  What really matters is what i don't have.  Once I own something, I forget about it.  But the hunt is still on for other pieces that some other collectors own.  So in the end, there is always a bigger fish, and always someone who makes you jealous.

I wish the good ole days would come back when T used to talk trash about Alamos and I didn't have to compete against him in one of my favorite areas of collecting. Oh yes, the good days when I had a week to purchase a new drop by Mondos before there was even a threat of selling out.

There's a tiny bit of waviness half way on the edge of the print.  It doesn't affect the picture area and will be easily framed out/corrected when I go to get it framed.

No pics of the Variant Star Wars yet as I am letting it relax a bit before flattening it out.  With three posters in the one tube and such thick paper its gonna take a bit to flatten back out.
Not to toot my own horn too much but I just scored a regular Star Wars set as well.   8)

This is my Stout collection so far... from the oldest to the newest.  Still missing a few, like Blade Runner variant and Big Trouble in Little China, but since I just got the 1st Warriors and The Lost Boys, I know it still can happen.

I know he has his detractors, but I personally love him and enjoy his evolution as an artist over the course of 3 years.

Those are very nice, but I don't see his evolution as an 'artist.'
When posted like you did, they all seem pretty similar in both composition and rendering.
Don't get me wrong, he's an extremely talented illustrator, but not as effective as the French and Italian masters that you also collect.
Just me humble opinion.

To be fair, I don't think you can compare Tyler to Grinsson or Soubie.  Those are masters from a time past.  I showed a few of their pieces to Tyler and he was in awe.  He would probably learn from them, the same way they learned from their elders, and future generations will learn from Tyler.  I think it is more accurate to compare artists to others within their era of creation.  And as such, I really believe Tyler is among the best poster artists working today.  I'd put Ansin and Taylor in that group.  I was actually part of an email exchange between Tyler and Martin, and both of them really appreciate each other's style.  Martin actually told me that Tyler is the one who prompted him to get involved.  So as different as their art is, they still inspire each other.  But to compare them to past masters, at least IMHO, would be like comparing Banksy to Pollock to Warhol.  Different eras, different inspirations, different styles.

I don't think you can really "show off" prints.  They're available to all and not really something to be super proud of.  Plus, other people, like Chad, have better collections than me.  But I still think it's cool to see them all together.

It's interesting that you chose to put Monster Squad in there.  It is a nice print that is often overlooked.

As soon as I heard Mondo was doing Monster Squad I knew I had to have it, it was one of my favorite movies when I was younger! I have both versions and I rotate them out in the same frame .. I had the variant on display 1st because it was the variant :P But after a while I pulled it out and the red just really pops and I think adds a whole new depth to the design .. :)

I have a Total Recall, Inglorious Basterds and Iron Man 2. Good quality prints from an artist with a pretty unique style - I understand that his posters are not to everyone's taste, but I think that cramming in of characters and detail works; when I spend time looking at one of his prints, it triggers lots of different individual memories of that film which remind me of moments I enjoyed and make me want to re-watch them.

Perhaps not relevant to a discussion on his prints/posters, but when I have had correspondence with him in the past (I bought the 3 prints directly from him when he was popular, as oppose to his current mega-popularity where I imagine he is flooded with emails), he came across as a thoroughly good guy...so I'm really pleased for him that his work has garnered so many fans and he's doing so well. :)

I wonder how the heck they pick the winners .. I am 100% sure there is no foul play on Tylers part but I think its odd that on EB I see multiple people that already had KB prints win the lottery and are selling or trying to trade up .. Just seems odd ..

Also I want to say it again so there is no misunderstanding, I do NOT believe NOR am I suggesting that Tylers lottery is rigged in any way !! :)

I think that someone has to be a VERY BIG douchebag to enter a lottery like this (for non-poster buddy purposes) when they already own a copy.

I didn't even enter because I would rather they go to people the liked the flicks far more than I do.

Two friends of mine, not members of this forum, won after I told them about the lottery.  So it does happen.

Sorry to hear, Dave.

LOL .. after typing that I remembered after the last lottery I think I said something on EB about how the same people keep winning multiple times .. See i just goes to show you cant make me happy :P Maybe his method is the most random .. I think it sucks, its random but at least with mondo if youre willing to put in the effort you can increase your odds of getting one ... I like thinking I have a chance .. I dont even get excited about Tylers lottery .. its like Im resigned to lose already .. :/

I won as well.  Got the regular so now I am in search of the variant as well.  I still need to track down a Kill Bill and would like an Akira but the price point is rediculous.

Actually Akira was fetching a few thousand dollars when it first hit the internet as being the first MMM print, and that only 180 were made of the standard and 80 variants, which is extremely low for a Stout run nowadays. The Thing standard had a print run of 210 and fetches $2000+ nowadays, so technically there are less Akira standards than are Thing standards out there. Both masterpieces in their own right, but Akira seems to be around the $800-$1000 price range and I don't see it coming down at all due to the low number, scarcity, and other factors. I kick myself for not buying The Thing last year for $500, now it's four times that amount and will probably continue to climb in value.

I should have said I was using the word "masterpiece" lightly in my posting, knew someone would comment. Both great films in my opinion though.

Seems kind of lazy for Stout, no?  Don't his posters usually recreate every key scene in the movie with somewhere between 50-75 hand drawn characters?   :P

Now THAT'S the kind of thoughtful, artistic analysis I come here for.  wynk

Every time I see one of Stout's prints I wonder what his electric bill runs.  I mean, the guy must use his lightbox 24 hours a day, right?
Which begs the question: what is worse...photoshopped movie posters or lightbox-traced tribute posters?

I think it is interesting to say the least how polarizing Stout's work is, especially on this forum.

Seems like his stuff is like any other niche in our collections...some might like a piece another might not, so what makes Stout any different?

Also, would love to see how fast Bruce would gobble up a Stout Blade Runner to auction, probably would have no i$$ue there...

Hi! This is my first post, be nice :P. This started back in 2008 when I was only 15/16 (I'm 19 now) and it did not at ALL come up again at any point in my life until this past week. I didn't understand collections or value back then on stuff like posters, only style. I saw the Blade Runner one and knowing myself as a huge movie fan, I liked it so much I bought it, then framed it. Then I saw the Hell Ride one and got that one too and framed it, but that posters not important, it's the Blade Runner one, I have the regular edition.

When I clicked and saw Blade Runner went for $1,800 I literally was in shocked I think for the first time (I'm YOUNG! give me slack :P) I have a $1,800 poster hanging in my view. I'm not saying i'm going to sell it, i'm not. I'm keeping it and if I need a rainy day fund someday, it can be it.

But holy crap, $1,800. I doubt my Hell Ride poster is worth just as much.

The thing is, I framed my posters, both of them, in glass and stuff, it cost like $500 I think. Does that add or devalue the value? I think because I'm keeping it in perfect condition it's worth more but I don't know.

Now, today, guess what? I didn't expect it but I won The Avengers lotto. I could've got the variant but I liked the color one more. I'm guessing, just based on what I can see, this will be a collectors item. Should I frame this one too or not given the answer to the previous question.

Sorry, i know I'm new and all and this is my first post but wow, I just couldn't wait to post all this. I
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: supraman079 on June 23, 2012, 12:41:50 AM
Framing your posters is not a problem as long as they are done right where they do not alter or damage the poster/print. The main thing is dry-mounting which is a process that is used to take out all the wrinkles which destroys any value of the poster. Other framing techniques of pinning or taping down the poster, trimming the poster to fit a specific frame or creasing the edge of it from tight framing can devalue the poster as well. The other thing you want to watch out for is hanging it in an area that gets a ton of sunlight that can fade the colors over time. You also want to make sure there is no moisture getting inside behind a glass frame creating a sweating effect.

Overall, enjoy them and I imagine the Avengers will look nice framed.
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: poland626 on June 23, 2012, 08:22:10 AM
The only thing the framing did was trim a bit, not all, like less than an inch of the white border, to fit. The signature and part of the border are still there keeping it in perfect condtion.

I also keep my blinds closed all day and the blade runner one is nowhere near any sunny windows. Yeah, thanks, I'm gonna frame that one when I get it and probably get rid of the hell ride on so I have space. That's mostly why I starting looking at prices and stuff. Thanks for the framing info
Title: Re: Tyler Stout
Post by: guest8 on June 23, 2012, 09:36:22 AM
Which one did they trim? That will effect the value and it should be disclosed when/if you ever sell it. If that is the only flaw it shouldnt hurt you too much.

A good framer should NOT be trimming the poster at all. If your copies were trimmed then yes they have been devalued. A Blade Runner variant that had a ton of water damage to it just sold for around $800 on ebay not long ago if I remember correctly. I would make sure you do NOT use the same framer for the Avengers. There is no reason the framer is not custom building the frame to fit the poster if you are paying $500 for one or two frames. Never make the poster fit the frame. I would look into www.spotlightdisplays.com you can give him the exact measurements of the poster and he will custom build the frame for you for a decent price.

It's not really necessary on a lot of the prints but on some of my high dollar ones that I display I went and bought a much higher quality of plexi to replace what comes with those frames that blocks out more UV rays, is thicker and looks a little nicer. But I'm kind of picky too. I've used his frames just the way the come and have had no real problems. I built two lightboxes with his frames as well. You can click on the link below to my poster website and go click on the Frames link to view some. Some are glass built frames and some are spotlight displays. All the Alamo Drafthouse are behind plexi. Once you are on the Frames page there is a link to the lightboxes I built, which is found in the paragraph explaining the page up top.

That blade runner with all the damage has been relisted .. I think its "sold" like 3 times now :P I think anyone that buys that is assuming a restoration will bring it back to its former glory and if the restoration is successful (which thats not guaranteed) it would be worth it .. But its a heck of a gamble .. Which is prolly why 3 people have bought it and 3 people have backed out.

Yeah, thanks for that poster site link and all the advice guys, I won't be using the same place as before but I will frame The Avengers poster just because I do like it and I'm not selling it, I'm hanging it. In case I DO need to sell the poster, it stays in perfect condition that way, but no trimming this time.

I took photos of both posters for reference for you guys. What do you think?

Looks interesting with the thin frame, I like the color and the hard edge of the Hell Rider frame more. How big are the frames iirc the prints are both ~24x36 and that looks like a pretty large matte.

The larger frames makes me wonder why the heck someone had to trim that down! :(
Title: Re: Tyler Stout

The reason, going off my memory, was the sets for the metal frame outline they had were different. Because I chose 2 different ones, (the black one is smaller than the golden color frame by a little), the sizes I guess were different. I just thought the orange and the black went with the posters at the time.

EDIT: I'll look up the sizes of the frames when I can and post back

Thanks Eddie! An excellent read as ever. Interesting to see the concepts and sketches, I love that stuff. Good nugget of info about double dipping with Drive too.

I have the reg and stood in a very long queue a few weekends back to get Stan Lee to sign it...man, that was a long day! :)

Shared the link in a screenprint FB group I'm in.

I really like his increased use of tones.
Seems to really enhance his linework, which gets better and better with each piece.
A really nice print, indeed.

Saw this on EB .. thought some of you may appreciate it .. There appear to be some actual differences between the reg and the variant besides just Mondos typical color changes.

Since I'm running out of space for posters, I decided to re-organize my man room and regroup things.  My Mondo crap was first on the list and I decided to pull out all the Stouts and take a picture of them while my kids were napping.  I had exactly 50 minutes.  I posted it on the Stout FB page and caused a meltdown.  One of the members even added them up to see how much money was on the floor.  Tons of people were pissed at me for not framing my prints.  I told them it wasn't the first time I had heard such complains.  Another member decided to use the picture as a banner for the FB page.

Anyhow, I forgot to post it here...  As much as they don't care about movie posters (zero comments on the few I posted), I suspect no one on this forum really cares about prints.  And that's fine.  I'm just posting it because it looks pretty.

I know that a Thing print just sold for $3k, but it was not until someone added them up that I realized the amount of money fans are willing to spend on those.  It's completely insane, imo.  I think the most I ever spent was $100.

Impressive photo there, T.  Is that almost every variation for every Stout print?  Sounds like you scored all of them at the Mondo drops, eh?

$3,000 for The Thing really shows how much of a following Mr. Stout has.  If you don't mind me asking, what is the current market $ value that the guy priced for all those in the photo?

The funny thing is, they were all going berserk about the gold Guardians of the Galaxy.  More than any other prints.  It was given to Marvel cast & crew, only 40 of them, and I got it from my wife who briefly worked at Marvel.  From their reaction, I'd assume it's the most expensive Stout print right now.

Excellent photo, T! A seriously impressive collection. If you're running out of space, I'm very happy to look after his print for Akira for you ;)

I laid out all my Durieux prints for a photo to enter some competition recently, it's about a third of the size of this but it was fun seeing them all together.

I debated buying my Thing when they were on sale at Mondo until they raised the price from $30 to $40, indicating that they were about to close the open edition, as was their way at the time...

As for the god Guardians, the first couple that come to market will draw the focus of completest Stout collectors which will sky high the price, much like the ugly-ass Star Wars Trilogy posters. And much like that poster, the gold Stout's look awful in comparison to their more colorful counterparts...

I have 250-300 prints and have never done the math on the pile as I dont really care what they sell for once they land here. It really is mind boggling what people pay for some of these things.

I refuse to pay over 200 for any of them and swallow hard if I ever pay that much.

They aren't really different at all, there are some of us who collect both original movie posters and screen prints. I have hundreds of  original movie posters collected over the years and have about 300 screen prints plus - collected over say the last 5 years. I must say that I am a great fan of Tyler Stout, he is one of my favourite artists. I must have going on 30 of prints but the very early ones - high on my list - like The Thing, Big Trouble, Bladerunner (my biggest ISO) - I will probably never own them as i can't justify a $1000 plus on what is at the end of the day a piece of thick print. Mind you - there are movie poster collectors who spend 1000s on orignal movie posters! Should I post some on here I wonder?

Don't think anyone has posted these yet. In the last week we have seen two new poster design releases from Tyler Stout which are absolutely amazing! Unfortunately I failed at the drop of the AVengers at Hero Complex Gallery,  they lasted only a few seconds before they sold out. these are now the highest on my ISO list.

First of then, Avengers Screen print, 24 x 36, this is the cast and crew variant edition with Multiple Metallic Inks, limited edition of 160

Secondly we have the variant edition, with Metallic Gold and Silver Inks, limited edition of 350.

And the regular edition, with metallic inks, limited edition of 750.

Original prices, $60 for the reg, $110 for the variant, and the cast and crew was not offerred for sale as it was give away to cast and crew.

These are really amazing but they are already commanding high prices on the bay, you are talking £200 - 250 min for both the variant or regular but I guess these are going to rise somewhat.

The cast and crew version, is gonna be difficuilt for any one to get hold of, there is only one on the bay at the moment and that is $800 and rising.

I just love this edition but not sure I will every be able to afford it. May have to take the plung and at least grab a regular as I don't hold much hope for being successful in the lotto.

Also Mondo released Tyler's latest, a new poster for The Goonies at the Mondocon convention. This one is just such an amazing print. The variant was issued exclusive at the convention, the regular edition (which has not been seen yet) will be released on line soon I guess.

Feast your eyes on this beauty then......

Ahahahah...  It's a collection, nothing less, nothing more.

To answer your question, I have no idea.  I always get my prints at cost and I do not follow trends, so I don't know what they're worth and I don't really care, to be honest, since I don't sell.  Someone on another forum added them up a few months and I was floored.  People are crazy.  What I know is that you will be able to pick up a Star Wars OS for less than $50 in no time.   I also know that based on what the guy told me, Stout prints have gone up in value drastically.  The guy does have a genuine following, people like me who enjoy his art.  He also tackles a lot of fanboy titles, which helps his prints retain their value.  SW is just hype.  How long it will last is hard to tell, but it's hype.

As for the printer's proofs, I really have zero interest in them, so I'm the wrong person to ask.

Good points.

Yeah, the estimated sales price for all the Stout prints, that the dude at the other place calculated, is astounding.

If you've made the decision to not sell your collection, regardless of how high the current market is, then that's cool.   cool1

Beyond that, I also believe that any profit made from a print should go to the dealer and to the artist.  All these people making a tidy profit over someone else work, just because they pushed a button at the right time, it kinds of disgust me, to be honest with you.  So I have traded a few prints, but I have never sold any.

Yeah, I know you've said that.  However, when there was the talk of The Force Awakens printer's proof a few days ago, and you mentioned how much that could currently sell for, I figured it's kinda similar to this vast collection of works from Stout.  Especially as you have some of the most in demand titles and all, similar to The Force Awakens printer's proof, and the current market for them is somewhat mind-boggling, IMO.  I wondered at what height of the market you may consider selling.

Anyway, I agree, that the whole "flipping" part about prints is really lame.  Unfortunately, it's just part of the game.

No height of any market is high enough.  Not selling at all.  I actually enjoy my collection, even if it's from a distance, since I don't frame anything.  Look, I'm not in this hobby to sell and make a profit.  If I did, I'd chose a different hobby because you'll never get rich from movie posters.  I'm in this hobby because I love movies and I enjoy collecting.  Period.  Others will think differently.  Don't care, to each his own.  I enjoy looking at my website and seeing my growing collection.  As long as I keep enjoying it, I'll keep collecting.

As far as The Force Awakens printer's proof, I personally don't see any relevance.  I don't understand the purpose of printer's proofs in general and I don't understand why people collect them.  Again, personal opinion.  I don't think any of my friends understand why I collect posters.  They do other things that I don't understand.  I'm not judging, I know what makes me happy.  Again, to each his own.  Tyler's prints have shown their collectibility over 7 years now.  Only time will tell if your Force Awakens printer proof holds its value.  I'm betting against it.

That was the only relevance I saw.

Just to note, here's the The Force Awakens printer's proof thread: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,10248.msg192963.html#msg192963 (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,10248.msg192963.html#msg192963)

I didn't realize Stout's prints have been in such high demand for as long as 7 years, however, the figure that the guy calculated at the other place, for all of Stout's works, is the current market value.

I'm also not much of a seller with this stuff, and ultimately, I'm not concerned about the crystal ball predictions and all.

In any case, after the derailment of this thread, congrats on the new acquisitions.

He's got a cool style (reminds me of paint by numbers), but from a distance, all his stuff looks a lot the same (imho).

That's what a lot of people think but I completely disagree.  Ultimately, taste (or the lack of) doesn't have to be justified since it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, I have never seen an hint of an imminent beanie baby style collapse that a few commentators have predicted over a similar period of time. Anyone who has handled these prints will appreciate their quality and the limited print runs help sustain demand. Given a burgeoning interest from a new generation in collecting art prints I believe early Tyler Stout prints in particular will remain a very sound investment for their original purchasers.

Agree completely.
But I'd also like to add that Tyler's work gets better and better with each piece.
His art used to bore me, but I've changed my tune.
I believe his best is yet to come.

Agreed also.  It does, it has and it will.  I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to change his style completely and try new things in the future.

For my money, though, there is still nothing better than his The Thing print.  A perfect combination of title and art.

I h'd like to see his style morph a bit, I can't remember the last one of his that I really liked.  All of the newer ones are 'just another Stout'...

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Goonies are really awesome.  Alien, I could do without, which is also why I didn't get it.  And Ultron, which I got, not a huge fan.  To me, Guardians and Goonies are the best since Kill Bill.  Everything in between is okay but not great.  But I'm a completist, so I need them all.

And as far as The Thing is concerned, I own both styles, and the style above IS my fav.  Striking in person.

I agree completely, Goonies and Gaurdians are by far the best since KB.

I was discussing on another forum about Ultron, The type of paper is so thin and on the regular the print looks so dark, I don't like it much preferring the variant to it. Though I need that cast and crew variant. Goonies is just fantastic print, Got the variant sill on the hunt for the regualr and the gold variant (would like all three). I think its the thinnest paper ever for a Stout print and being that you have so many, would be grateful for your opinion on that one.

Your collection of Stout is amazing - must be one of the best. There was one guy in the facebook group who post his collection, was nearly complete too or even was - was that you by any chance?? I don't know how you manage to get them all at cost, these days I find it impossible to get a stout on the drop, you must have the magic touch or do you use a bot?? Please tell me your secret! :)

I think on my last count I had about 30 so many still to get and hope one day will get enough money to but some of the big ISO's. Have you been collecting Stout from day one then??

I've been collecting Stout since 2008, when I purchased the Blade Runners (I had both styles but I gave the variant away) and the 2 The Things prints for less than $60 each.  I was hooked.  I don't use a bot but I have an extremely fast connection and I know what I'm doing (most of the time ;))  If interested, you can see my entire print collection here (http://www.eatbrie.com/Mondo.htm).  As far as being one of the best collections, it is not, no hard work there, all is take is luck and a little money.  Anyone can do it.  And yeah, maybe I'm the guy you're talking about.  I posted this picture on the Stout fan page earlier this year, before Ulton and Goonies, and got a lot of shit for it because I don't frame anything and everything I own is just tucked away, which seems to rub people the wrong way.  Oh well... every collector is different.

Yes this is the pic I saw on the stout page, but how did you manage to lie them all out like that on the floor, you must have an enourmous room to do that. I collected about 2010, missed all the early ones (which are off now the big ISOs), first ones I got were Robocop and Total Recall and The Alamo, and onwards from there, I didn't need to get everyone I was kinda happy with one of each which I have mostly from those days, but latterly I have been getting both regs and vars. stout is just my favourite artist (as he is with a lot), but like you, I don't yet have any in frames. I have hundreds of posters and only a handful in frames - crazy! (so I understand the way you collect as I am similar). My biggest wants are Inglorious Bastards, Bladerunner, and BTILC.

Cheers

I don't have any wants when it comes to prints.  I get what I get when I get it and I move on.  I will never buy something from a flipper because I don't believe in feeding the scavengers.  If I miss one, too bad, another print will spark my interest.  And I don't really like to display my posters.  I have one up at the house right now, and the rest is out of sight.  I can't see myself ever framing a print.  I think it's great that other people do it and I always enjoy seeing what people chose to put up, it's just not my thing.

You started with the variant Thing, and picked up the regular later... I still remember Jeanie having to buy your first ones for you because you just weren't sure that these 'prints' were your bag.  Quite the slippery slope.

Yes, and she stole my Blade Runner variant.  I asked her to buy both and she decided to keep it.  And now she won't give it back.

I recently added the Goonies regular print to my collection to complete the set, and I notice that the paper is a lot thinne than the other two Goonies (almost like that Ultron paper). I was worried in case I had been sold a dupe. I don't think so but do you find the regular is on much thinner paper?

Hi Jeff, Some of the older artists called it "effectively using the white space", rather than filling every space with drawing.  I like the way Stout uses light in his art. He's also taking some clues from Thai poster artists in showing many scenes/vignettes.  His design is like a where's Waldo, though with incredible art.  Would be cool to see the poster full size.  Okie

I love this True Romance, it's a really fantastic interpretation of the characters. I missed the drop (well not missed but couldn't get it into the cart and to paypal)  - the site just hung for like 3-5 mins by which time they were sold out. So gutted as this is the best I have seen for a while. I keeping my fingers crossed on the Tyler sale.

I didi manage to get the two Isle of Dogs posters which are great but again, some love and some distaste for them so you can pick them up for not more above cost. I missed the drop but I picked up both for other buyer's costs plus shipping to UK so fairly happy on that score.

Hope TR works out. I need a PB friend to get me one, that is what I need.

The Terminator - regular is timed (for 12 hours, onsale now), variant is limited to 350. Released by Tyler himself, which is cool. https://tstout.bigcartel.com/

T - a dilemma for your amazing Stout collection versus your dislike of timed editions? Gonna pop your timed edition cherry?

Got up early and scored a variant version. I'm not a fan if the colors of the timed version. That color scheme works with True Romance and Drive, but (at least for me) not for the Terminator. Bummer that they couldn't get Arnold's likeness rights, but a solid effort even without those.

Timed editions are shit, imo.  Completely defeats the purpose of numbered prints.  I never thought I'd own one.  Until today :)

Only managed to get the timed one myself, pretty gutted about that as I prefer the variant. If anyone has a spare Variant of have change of mind once you get them let me know - I would be interested at a decent price.

New Stout this morning!!!  This one I had to get.  Still on the fence about the timed edition one.  I hate those, but I might end up getting it anyway.

Got a regular. Liked the orangey-pumpkin vibe.

Yes, I ended up buying the timed edition too  :'(. I guess it’s the completist in me.  Still missing Big Trouble though.  I can’t recall why I didn’t buy it back then.  Oh well...
