Title: December 2016
Post by: erik1925 on December 03, 2016, 12:52:52 PM
I think this early December haul from T has half the month covered already.  ;D  Some really nice stuff in that mix!  clap

Received some 40 posters yesterday.  A pretty good haul.  Nothing out of this world, but some items I wanted for a while.

Here's a Japanese tatekan I just scored for Sam Fuller's film noir HOUSE OF BAMBOO (1955.)  Interestingly, this is one of the earliest Hollywood films to shoot on-location in Tokyo, so I've been looking for this foreign poster for a while...

Here are a few to help get the month started.

Nothing to break down the door, but some welcome additions none-the-less.

Iron Eagle

Rosemary's Baby : Mondo screen printed release. I have a fondness for most anything Rosemary's Baby related, so this was a no brainer. Love the lines and apect of this art by Jonathan Burton.

I've never seen Iron Eagle, but in just looking at the poster, was it sort of a Top Gun rip-off?
Title: Re: December 2016
Post by: Chris9000 on December 05, 2016, 08:20:20 AM

Thanks, Ted!

Jeff, it capitalized on the success of Top Gun, but it's not really a rip-off. I picked it up because of the found memories I have of that movie as a kid, and being into jets and fighter planes in general at that time in my life.

Thanks, Chris. The look of the poster had me thinking it might have taken quite a bit from the TG flicker. Good to know. And even more important is that the movie and now the poster hold fond childhood memories for you.  thumbup

You've all heard me whine about losing many classic movie posters to a few unscrupulous dealers way back when.
Now, as I enter my 50th year as a movie poster collector, I am going to focus on finding replacements for those I miss the most.
This week, I scored two.

This 1962 Day of the Triffids one-sheet just arrived and it is virtually as spotless as the pic above -- no tack holes, no tears, no separations... nothing.
I'd show you my pics but Photobucket is on another fucking bender.
Been struggling with that damn site for the last half-hour.
Here are some hotlinked ebay pics from the seller.

My second replacement poster (from a different seller) should be here by Thursday or Friday.

Thanks movie poster maniacs!
The one I used to have was tacked on my bedroom wall beside my One Million Years BC poster for years.
I bought it from Fred Clarke (Cinefantastique) for $1.50 (those were the days).
It got dirty and faded, torn in a few spots... nothing like this pristine beauty I just received.
I couldn't be happier.

Jeff Iron Eagle is a good movie, but my opinion might be a bit biased since it was one of my favorite movies as a kid......Also that post of T's haul is pretty great. I want the Red White and Blue Halloween Quad!!!!! It goes with the 1 out of 4 Double Crowns I won a few months back.

Ted Triffids is Cherry!!!!  Congrats. I also took note of your approval of the Thai Dead and Buried. I seriously need to update my site. The online horror section has around 35 posters, when in reality I have around 100.....

How's the movie? I would think good since it was directed by Werner Herzog.

you have to like Herzog, which I think is usually a case of LOVE or HATE, but I happen to LOVE, so I think its GREAT!

Nice poster Ari, I really like the colors as well and I'm a big Herzog fan myself.  I also really like the HOUSE OF BAMBOO Japanese poster and think it's a great film to watch, especially the ending.  I don't get jealous of too many things but that DETOUR has got me going! I love the all the promotional material for it but it's always out of my financial reach whenever I see any listed.

Here's a fun Thai poster for HARDLY WORKING.  I've never seen the film and hear it's not good but you'd never know by the look of this poster.

Hokey smokes (to quote Rocky & Bullwinkle), boy did I blow it AGAIN by not setting up the notify thing for this month. Why do i always DO that (probably because I always post my 1st of the month post on the END of the previous month perhaps?)...but wow! Wow! WOW!!!  Look at all of the goodies!

Here's a Japanese tatekan I just scored for Sam Fuller's film noir HOUSE OF BAMBOO (1955.)  Interestingly, this is one of the earliest Hollywood films to shoot on-location in Tokyo, so I've been looking for this foreign poster for a while...

Cool. What IS this tatekan bad boy, dpcarlson? Like an insert? Bigger? I don't know much about Japanese posters, but this is cool. I like the flair at the top. is it in two pieces? Nice.

CHRIS, congratulations. Me likes this one, too. I also like the name of the top billed actress...ANN SAVAGE. Ha! I wonder who she was. Never saw the movie...

Here are a few to help get the month started.

Nothing to break down the door, but some welcome additions none-the-less.

CHRIS Oooo I'm not quite hip as to what the Mondo stuff is exactly...but I do like your ROSEMARY'S BABY. Keep going. You are doing super great!

Yep, congrats on a really nice Triffids poster from an enjoyable film. The book's worth reading too, don't know whether you have read it? A bit stiff-upper-lip-English from the fifties but the story still stands out as very original.

Ted, nice triffids, the 80's BBC mini series is the BEST adaptation of the story though (IMHO;)

The one with John Duttine in, it re-surfaced on British tv a couple of years ago. The quality was a bit shaky, (don't know whether it's the film they used but a lot of films and tv series from that era don't look great) but it was more faithful to the book. You might think the BBC would make a few more sci-fi stories given that the re-vamped Doctor Who has been so popular but they seem to stick more with tried-and-tested costume dramas which they successfully flog around the world.

Hey, that's really nice. Interesting pre-film artist's idea of what a triffid might look like. I used to have the orange cover Penguin version but mislaid it.

I also re-read a couple of his others last year - The Kraken Wakes and The Midwich Cuckoos, the latter especially is still very good. Apparently, John Wyndham was a bit sniffy about sci-fi and preferred to call his efforts "logical fantasies" but, whatever, they're a good read.

I have the Midwich Cuckoos but haven't read the Kraken Wakes.
Must get a copy.

While we were talking, post office just delivered a few new ones from EMP.

First up is the American one sheet for Spirits of the Dead (1969), art by Reynold Brown.
I wish they would've printed this in 4-color...

(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/spirits_of_the_dead_intl_WC06989_T_zpsm3f0gaqq.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/brude2000/media/spirits_of_the_dead_intl_WC06989_T_zpsm3f0gaqq.jpg.html)

Then another Robert McGinnis poster for my pin-up sub-collection - The Teasers (1975):

(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/teasers_NS00312_L_zpsdkag1dio.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/brude2000/media/teasers_NS00312_L_zpsdkag1dio.jpg.html)

and lastly, my second poster replacement this month.
Not quite as jaw-dropping as my Triffids, but a classic that I had for years and wanted to replace since I lost it.
I do love the design...
1962's Night of the Eagle -- released here in the US as Burn Witch Burn

(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/burn_witch_burn_NS00308_L_1_zpstv6rtlp3.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/brude2000/media/burn_witch_burn_NS00308_L_1_zpstv6rtlp3.jpg.html)

Had this poster on the bedroom wall at one time, way back when.

Awesome haul, Ted.

Spirits of the Dead was a big one for me on many fronts. First Fellini, first Vadim, and first Bardot...been in love with'em all since, especially the later  ;) This film, Cinema Paradiso, and the Butcher Boy were the first to really open my eyes to international cinema as a young teen. Still need to grab some paper from it.

That Burn the Witch is gorgeous as well...

But how were they lost?

I traded 100s of horror and sc-fi posters to a few unscrupulous dealers in the late 60s for comic books.
I had no idea what they would be worth at that time.
I lost Forbidden Planet, The Mole People, Invaders from Mars, Earth Vs the Flying Saucers, The Giant Behemoth and many, many more for what amounted to a worthless pile of comic books.
I was just a kid and they were sharks.

BIG MIKE and TOB---killer pick ups, both of you.

BIG MIKE, I have always loved CAULDRON OF DEATH -- even though the film is NOT a horror flick and it's just a clever re-titling--and no woman is ever thrown in a vat of acid like that (but there IS a vat of acid in the movie. No spoilers though.)  Stunning horror art. And the other two are delicious as well.

TOB, color me green (as in "with envy") over your HOUSE poster.  What a bat-shit crazy movie...and an impossible (for me, anyway) poster to get. Bravo, my man!  Wow! Wow! WOW!!!

It's the 15th. I've got my usual post of 10 new acquisitions going up on my thread in just a few minutes. As usual, here is a sample--not the best stuff by far. (Actually there are a couple I am really excited about. It may be worth your while to take a gander at my page this time. I'm not kidding!)

Also, I started a little daily advent calendar, counting down to Christmas Eve when i'll throw up a bonus post and then again on Christmas Day. I may post samples on those days as well. For now, here are these:

BLAIR WITCH:

THE HANDS OF ORLAC:

A few new ones. Couple of UK Quads and German A1. I'm really starting to like the German A1s because they are not expensive, typically carry the same art as US and UK and very cheap to frame due to the size.

RAGING BULL UK QUAD

Some recent acquisitions...

Rogue One: Limited Edition art print with cool matte finish, offered to the Regal Rewards Club members w/ Art by DKNG (13x19")

The Lobster: One of my favorite films of 2016. Certainly not for everyone, but one I latched on to.

Inglorious Basterds: This is the international one sheet...almost exactly the same as the U.S., but doesn't have the annoying wording in the middle of the upper artwork.

Batman - The Dark Knight: Wildling art

Starry Eyes: An incredible indie horror film, very much in the vein of Lynch or Cronenberg

Rosemary's Baby: This is the original Polish poster with art by Wieslaw Walkuski from '84 (first year of release in Poland). This film has become one of my few niche collections. I've been gravitating toward the paper from this film for a while, so I figured I might as well give in.

Rosemary's Baby: Alt. U.S. one sheet. I really dig the layout and halftone artwork on this one.

Congrats to everyone on all of their grabs this month, and I hope the holidays treat everyone well.

CHRIS, like TeamWeapon said, OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES is a cheesy Jess Franco schlock fest. I like it, but it's definitely on the lower end of the zombie movie genre (NOT counting the flood of direct-to-video crap out now).

TED, glad you dig the DEATHSTALKER II poster (which I think is really the least interesting of the four---but, as a collector, it is a "must have") and the "ZOMBIETHON". Ha! You have excellent taste.

TANIAEDURNE: Double WOW-y! Love the FORBIDDEN PLANET posters!

Sean,
Awesome hall man! The standouts for me are the High Rise, Moon, Girl Walks Home, and Salon Kitty.

I'd say you're making up for lost time!

Congrats.

Some great stuff from all this month.

Taniaedurne - That Forbidden Planet is awesome, the missing paper adds character. It's beautiful.

teamweapon - The Moon is a fantastic poster, just love the simplicity of it. That 31 is great.

Just a simple one for me.

Very interesting artwork there, Dale.  Congrats on the win.

A quick search shows that the movie has very good ratings reviews.  I added it to my queue, also.

if there was one more panel, you would see the redhead collapsing as she was the next victim shot.

Wow.  The effect with the different depths of field, point of view, and of course the tragic nature of the situation, really make that montage of images is shocking.

Wow SEAN, that is quite a haul. Love the LOST RIVER....never heard of it. What is it? Any good? 31 is also striking. Wow! And i dig the nazisploitation stuff, especially SALON KITTY and PERVERSIONS DE LA GESTAPO. Cool. BRAVO.

Nice pickups BASEMAN and DALE.

Jeepers! It's soon to be the very last day of 2016. How did that happen? EEK!  Anyway, to send the year off in style, I've created another bonus post for my thread that i'll get up sometime after midnight APF time. Here's my usual sample:

lost river is ryan goblins directorial debut and its a SUPERB movie kind of set in a lynchian universe, cinematography is excellent too, VERY much worth seeing in my opinion. i wanted a 1sht for it but i wont pay $100 for a new poster which is about what they seem to go for.
31 was a putrid unwatchable MESS of a movie i can't bad mouth it enough!
the 2 agrentian posters were also my faves out of the bunch i think? i had been looking for black gold for quite some time. both in really nice condtion as well. a pleasing bunch of paper :)
