Title: New Collector
Post by: Dr Bill on December 01, 2016, 01:55:32 PM
Hello,

I'm a new collector of lobby cards, with very little collecting background but a film fan for many years.  I'm especially interested in sci-fi and Kubrick films. I've begun by purchasing a few cards on eBay, but would like to know how to recognize fakes from the real thing, as the prices seem to vary wildly. Just a beginner here, and hoping to learn.

welcome1, Dr Bill and enjoy the forum.

There are lots of good and helpful people here that will be able to help you with any lobby card (or any other) questions you might have.

Welcome fella.

If in doubt, chuck some specimens up here and ask.

There are a couple of well known dealers of fake wares on ebay.  Trusting you are aware of these??

I may do that when they arrive, but Mr. Egbert at movieposterbargains has informed me that it may be a while till they arrive. I have done a lot of research here today and a few notorious names have come to light, his among them, along with tloce and bradburied. I have to say that so far Mr. Egbert's email has been very professional, so I'm hoping for the best. I did receive my first four cards from Posteritati today, so I now have some reliable standards to compare to. I've continued this in the Authentication section.

Thanks for replying.

Welcome Dr. Bill. I see you've already meet some of the locals. I'm more of a poster guy than a lobby card guy, but, as Jeff said, there are a LOT of helpful people on here. Just post a question somewhere. Do NOT be shy. I've been a poster collector for more than 40 years...and I'm still learning new things on here. Welcome to the site.

Thanks for the welcome, Shawn. Very nice collection you have there - I really feel like  noob. I'm a collector at heart, maybe too obsessive at times, so this could be dangerous. I've been a serious film fanatic for 50 years, and have about 1,000 Blu-rays and several hundred DVDs as a result. Still collecting. I've been a serious amateur photographer for 50 years, and have hundreds of vintage cameras from the late 1800s to the present as a result. Still collecting. After seeing a few lobby cards framed and displayed locally, I thought they'd be fun as well - small enough that the little available room I have left wouldn't be covered with large posters (although I've seen some posters here that are mouth-watering). For now I'm just trying my best to keep my finger off the Buy It Now button until I educate myself. Um - that's not working very well - I need to have complete sets of everything...

The help here has been amazing. And that makes me want more cards...

I'm also a movie nut with a zillion DVDs and blu Rays, too. I hear you about trying to keep your fingers off the buy it now buttons. I keep trying to resist auctions---i just can NOT afford them now...and yet I keep buying! Buying! BUYING!  EEEEK! I'm such a doomed poster whore. But you like what you like, right? Anyway, welcome to the party.

CHEERS!

It's been some party so far. I'm now the proud owner of over 150 lobbies (counting the singles in each set) - in just 5 days. I can't seem to do an ebay search without finding another set I just have to own. Now I have to set up a photo rig to record them and figure out the best way to post some here. I know I'm in the minority as a lobby guy here, but as you say, I like what I like. Must - have - more...

Lobbies are fun to collect.  I've been collecting them for a few years now and to me they go hand in hand with posters, since they were meant to be shown together.

Show us what you got so far!

And welcome to APF, if I haven't already said so.

I'm traveling this week, but I'll try to post some this weekend. I'm in the US, and some are coming from Germany, Spain, and France, so 'll have to be patient. My main interests are sci-fi, horror, and the ladies. Sometimes I just see a beautiful card out of a not so special set and have to have that too. And then there are the singles that really appeal to me but are in rough shape, especially the vintage stuff - they're cheap, but I wonder if it's worth snagging them anyway. Will I find one in mint condition later and be tempted to re-buy? So many temptations...but I'm loving it!

Thanks, brude. I'll try to put up a mix of everything this weekend, but much of what I've bought still won't be here yet. I assume it's still best to link to pics on an outside site rather than attaching directly here? When doing that, are there any size requirements? I'll try to do some more digging on the details. For now my mouse finger is exhausted from BINs. As I'm traveling this week, hopefully I'll have some new packages to open when I get home.

Nosferatu the Vampyre, eh?
I almost sprang for a set of photobustas this week.
Love that movie.

I put up my first trial set in the collections thread, an 8 1/4 x 11 3/4 German set of Brom Stoker's Dracula. Although the German/Spanish/English sets are smaller, I'm finding scenes that aren't available in the 11 x 14 US sets. Stefan Reitz (slidemen) in Germany has been great to deal with and even slipped me a few extras in the last shipment.

I'll do the 11 x 14 Herzog set next, as soon as I photograph them this weekend. It's a gorgeous collection of prints.

I bet, Nosferatu is a beautiful film.
I like German cards also, and the sets have so many cards, rather than just 8 (or usually).

Hell no! You have to keep buying Psycho posters so I don't feel like a bankrupt heroin addict...

Oh, so you want ME to feel like the bankrupt heroin addict then? I DO...but withOUT the withdrawal (I guess that will come when i can NOT figure out HOW to buy more... EEEK!). But you've taken your first steps, had your first tastes...and are coming back for more and More and MORE!!  Soon you'll be buying original FRANKENSTEIN lobby card sets and not even batting an eye... (and then you'll wake up and find yourself homeless under a bridge next to me---YIKES!)

Ignore me---i just got off a long, long shift at work. I need some sleep.

CHEERS!

Welcome, Dr. Bill,

Sounds like you've dove in deep to the hobby/addiction already! This place is an amazing resource for all things poster related, and if you can't find it, someone here will most likely have an answer for you, or at least point you in the correct direction.

I'm looking forward to seeing the beginnings of your collection!
