Title: November 2016
Post by: erik1925 on November 01, 2016, 02:55:21 PM
Had this arrive today. It's an Argentinean OS for the Austrian film called Noch Minderjährig (1957). It was released in English speaking countries with the title, Under 18. I've not seen the movie but what caught my eye was the intense color and beautiful stone litho-created artwork.

On the back is a small stamp which reads "Dwight Cleveland Poster Archive" so it's kind of cool to have a poster that was once in his incredible collection.

Es muy caliente.  Nice one, and cool added history with it.  Did you buy it knowing that it's from the Dwight archive?

Thanks, Brandon. No, I had no idea it had been part of the Cleveland Archive as the seller never mentioned it, either. Or maybe he didnt notice the stamp, which is done in a light grey ink. I will try and snap a pic of it. I only noticed it, when I went to unfold it.

Nice press sheets, Devin. Cool horizontal format, and that layout works really well on The Searchers, giving a feel for the expanse and openness in that image. What size are each of these?

And Congrats on the pickups.  thumbup

Thanks you guys :)!  Pretty happy with them...Jeff, the press sheets are 24cm by 52cm.  I thought The Searchers used that layout really well, really emphasising the vast open territory.  My favourite is the Planet of the Apes; (even though it's not really a press sheet) the inside has 2 pages of colour shots and 4 pages of b/w including shots of Kim Hunter getting her make-up on.  Of course now, that process has become a bit "ho-hum" (or it's just done with a keyboard) but back in the day I imagine being able to see the stages of her make-up progression would be quite interesting for the reader.

Little disappointed in the condition it made it in, but not a lot of these around at this point. Some of the issues will press out.

Sounds like some good acquisitions already this month..hopefully Photobucket will be up soon and I can check them out!

I use Dropbox and they are pretty rock solid. They don't have the biggest free storage option in the world, but I just open another account with a free email when my space runs out. Natively, you can't embed the "shareable" link they give you, but if you change end of the share url from, (dl=0) to (run=1), the photos will display fine.

Picked up a few oldies and some newer ones lately..I've kind been all over the place here recently.

Back to the Beach - This one isn't very well known, but has a semi-cult following, and my family and I watch it every year when summer rolls around.

Blade Runner - Happy to finally add this to the collection. I was trying to hold out for a rolled copy, but I grabbed this one and am extremely happy with the condition. The artwork is striking in person.

Bottle Rocket - This is Wes Anderson's first film. The poster isn't much, and I've actually never seen the film, but I think I am going to to start collecting his films in posters, so why not start here.

A Monster Calls - The trailer for this really struck me, so I picked one up from Dale. I'm really fond of the colors/design as well.

Well, I'm never going to own the US three sheet but I have managed to acquire his (very) little brother:

(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o524/cartinmild1/rsz_1rsz_king_kong_1_zpsbsud3nup.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/cartinmild1/media/rsz_1rsz_king_kong_1_zpsbsud3nup.jpg.html)

Interesting to compare it to the Australian version currently up for sale at Heritage, which I haven't seen before:

https://movieposters.ha.com/itm/movie-posters/horror/king-kong-rko-1933-australian-herald-closed-5-x-725-opened-725-x-85-/a/7132-86302.s?ic2=mytracked-lotspage-lotlinks-12202013&MyTrackedLots-101116

I like the way in the various King Kong formats that the artist didn't let perspective/proportion get in the way of great graphics - either Fay Wray is pretty pumped up (she probably was) or the US was using a special miniaturised airforce at the time.

It does unfold:

(http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o524/cartinmild1/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_king_kong_2_zpstzhnzcoi.jpg) (http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/cartinmild1/media/rsz_1rsz_1rsz_king_kong_2_zpstzhnzcoi.jpg.html)

It's bigger than a normal herald but I suppose most of the publicity for King Kong was larger than life.

Congrats to everyone, by the way, for all your new additions. I like the Argentinian one sheet - I had heard something of the Dwight Cleveland collection in the past but was unaware of its scope and size till I did a search on it. That was some collection!

Thanks for posting those added pics, Martin. It looks to be in fantastic condition, too, with no fold splits or separations.

And here's a pic of the Dwight Cleveland stamp on the back of the Arg. OS. It was done in such a light gray ink, that it shows as lighter, so I boosted the contrast to make it more visible. I really like the old style camera on the tripod that he included as part of his archive logo, too.

if I post in this thread, they are collected, unless I have a duplicate(s)

Kidnapped is actually the duplicate copy as is the Masters of Grind

unfortunately, there are no records of these posters, so little reference.

Rich I thought you were mostly anti-linen for posters in your personal collection. Or is it due to this style being more rare that you are choosing to do it?

My first Italian posters arrived today direct from Italy, locandinas for Klute, Deliverance, and Amadeus. I had time to build a frame while they were in transit, and I decided to hang Klute first. I also picked up a set of 8X10 lobby cards of The Duellists for $7 shipped, guess the movie is obscure enough that no one else placed a bid. They aren't as exciting, but I love the movie.

A bit newer than some of the other great titles this month. Really excited this is being released. Loved the first film just hoping that it is as good.

Bottle Rocket - This is Wes Anderson's first film. The poster isn't much, and I've actually never seen the film, but I think I am going to to start collecting his films in posters, so why not start here.

Love the film and especially love the simple artwork on this poster with the black background. In my opinion one of the best designs for this film along with the French re-release in the 90s.

I'm lucky enough to have children that love movies and have gotten into posters along with me. They're not quite internet savvy (thankfully) so I'll post this one on their behalf.

A photo from this morning of them with their latest acquisition, The Lego Batman Movie, and discussing what their next pick-up should be (and how much allowance they have left).

Neo: Thanks! They probably have a dozen or so one sheets. We watch a lot of trailers together, so if they see something that catches their eye, they want to see what the poster looks like, and it kind of goes from there. I usually subsidize about 30% of the cost because I enjoy sharing the hobby with them, the rest comes from allowance, extra work, etc.

Ted: Killer Godzilla there, and thanks for the comment. I'm type-A all around, but I try not to impress too much of it on them. They initially asked why I wear them. After explaining, I told them they are welcome to handle their posters however they wish, and they decided on gloves as well.  thumbsup.gif

I think it's cool also. Surprisingly, no one seems to have sold any. I have a few extras, but no way to really price them - an issue with very many titles I've found in the Hollywood Book & Poster deal. Eric knew how to hunt down the rare stuff and there's lots of it. I may have to 'make up' some prices, or see if HA wants to try some of them out.

Hey CHRIS/GINGERMAN! Thanks for the nod towards my FANTASIA quad. Posting that called my attention to a major blunder on my part. When I posted my catch-up favorites for November thing about the new acqs everyone had this month, i totally left out YOURS---which are awesome (I'm a sucker for all things KING KONG and GODZILLA, as you may know). But my fave of the batch was the Asian bathtub NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Ooooo. LOVE it.

Had this arrive today, after a bit of an overextended wait from its departure overseas. I'm happy that it finally got here and wasn't floundering about somewhere, out in the Great Beyond.  confounded.gif whew.gif

A Thai poster for Dead & Buried (1981)

What i think is so unique about the Thai version is that artist Tongdee not only re-drew Campanile's imagery of the face protruding up through the broken earth, but also added his own, more grim scenic elements on the lower half of the poster, whereas poster versions from other countries are just a black background with the title and production/actor credits.

I had been looking for this one for a while, so was happy to finally snag a copy. I own only 2 Thai posters and both are by the very talented Tongdee Parnumas.

Hah! Just last night while going through Chris Gingerman's website I took note of the same poster and added it to my want list. I sold off my one sheets for this film because I thought they were kinda bland, I do love that Thai version, though.  Well done, Jeff!

Happy Thanksgiving -- almost. I've taken the liberty of putting together a bonus Thanksgiving post for my thread that I'll post as some time after the APF clock strikes midnight. Here's a small sample of what you'll find. You also find my (oh my STARS!) three (THREE? Oh MAN! Am i in trouble now) wins from the recent Heritage Auction. Oops. Look or don't --they'll be posted sometime after APF midnight when it's Thanksgiving in APF Land. Enjoy...and pass me a piece of pie.

Nice trio of lovery ladies there, Shawn. And with Raquel leading the way! Looks like the Fathom folks decided to keep in theme with her One Million Years BC outfit. And it's certainly fitting, in more ways than one. ;)

Thank, Ted. I've never seen Dead & Buried but the face thru the ground imagery on the posters always caught my eye, and Ive now added it to my watch list. It might be horrible for all I know, but I'll be giving it a look-see. Ive watched the trailer on youtube only.

Jeff, you picked up on my little (and really, rather lame) Thanksgiving joke....NOT a horror film in my sample any where to be seen, but rather 2 exploitation films and a Raquel Welch title with lots of scantily clad women. On Thanksgiving, do you prefer legs, thighs, or breasts? Dark or white meat? (Okay...i was thinking of Steve when this tacky little joke popped into my head as I knew he'd zoom in on these titles...and Steve doesn't even celebrate Thanksgiving where he is. Ha!)  And you are right about the studio trying to recall the ONE MILLION BC imagery with Raquel in the FATHOM poster I think. I made note of that in my post for tonight. Very astute of you. Bravo.

rJEFF I forgot to mention, Fresno used to be a place they would occasionally test market movies. DEAD OR ALIVE was one of those titles. I've never seen it either, but it played here (before opening everywhere else) under the test title of LOOK ALIVE. Clearly that was NOT a winning title.

Another addition to my Gene collection. The window card for Tobacco Road. Picked it up off the bay and probably paid a bit too much for it, although Heritage have never sold one and Bruce sold a poor conditioned one a while back. This one looks to  be in pretty good condition.

I seem to go through spells of not finding any Gene T paper and then suddenly bam! They all appear in various places at once.

So I haven't got many UK half sheets of Gene's films so having a quick look on the bay tonight picked this up.

Greg Edwards has been hawking his round for years with the cut corner. Another one showed up also with a cut corner but at three times a lower price so I nabbed it.  I thought it was probably close to my last chance of owning a copy of this half sheet and at a great price.

Now onto this one.... I stupidly sold my copy of this a few years back and then completely forgot about it when it was subsequently auctioned at Emovie not too long ago.

Again I got it at such a low price that I had to have it but as you can see there is some pretty bad staining on the actual poster. A wise man on here once told me that if you see something that you want and it's something that is quite rare then get it as you never know how long you have to wait for a better copy to show up.

It's probably alongside Laura as my favourite Gene film. She is a badass in this movie!

It may be one I send away to get it cleaned up.

You refer to the Thunder Birds piece as a "UK half sheet." Is this a different size from a US HS?

Title: Re: November 2016
Post by: timelessmoviemagic on November 27, 2016, 05:33:20 PM
Both the US and UK half sheets are the same Jeff, 22"x28". Some collectors I know feel that the US half sheets have a better image than its UK counterpart.

Here's the US half sheet for Leave Her to Heaven compared to the UK one.

credit to Emovie for this pic as mine is stashed away.

And again the UK half sheet
(http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss152/fozz010/Gene%20Leave%20Her%20to%20Heaven_zpsk64ejq1i.jpg)

Gene looks pretty dreamy in the US half sheet  bed1

Nothing exciting. Just another addition to my Hoffman obsession. Always nice to find posters you never knew existed. This is apparently a British one sheet. I'm not sure they were even used (I say they as I bought three of them in the auction). For an added bonus, it seems that the design was changed in print. Within the black square to the right of Peter Sellers is the word 'is' in black ink. In lots of other campaigns it says 'Peter Sellers is Hoffman'. I think someone realised that the poster read 'Peter Sellers is Sinead Cusack in Hoffman' and quickly blacked it out.

Here is a sample of the posters for my December 1st post on my thread. I'm posting them on this last day of November, so someone with COOL stuff can be first for the December new acqs posting. If you ventured over to my thread and saw my bonus Thanksgiving post (which included my three wins from the Heritage Auctions Major Auction---eeek!), you'll know I broke the bank on those...and so this post is rather...low budget. Despite the decided lack o' pizzazz, I'll still post it (tomorrow) and this sample/preview. Come see the rest on December 1st---or don't. Ho ho ho...here come the samples:
