Title: Linen backing
Post by: wattsy04 on September 28, 2016, 06:19:27 AM
Hi all

I've just bought a Star Wars pre-oscars Quad and although the condition is excellent I've decided to linen back so that it looks even better. I've used a UK restorer for linen backing before and although they did a good job it was expensive for the fold touch up. Is there a specialist Quad restorer/linen backer? I've heard Graham Bignell and studio C are both very good. It only really needs backing as not real damage, maybe slight fold lines.

Thanks for your help
Paul

Hi Paul,

Have you got a picture of the quad?
You mention its in excellent condition so imo I would leave it as is. Be interesting to see what others on here think about it

Regards
Marc

Well, I was thinking the same.  But since the chap seemed to have made his mind up to back it, I left it alone.

There is a thread of recommended people as a sticky...

If its in excellent condition, don't muck it up with backing.

Hey Paul,

As other have mentioned (inquired)-- do you have a pic?

And if it's in excellent condition, as you mention, you might do better to leave it as is. Tho, ultimately, its what you think will make it look best, To You.  :)

I seem to recall a thread here on the forum where some were not that happy with Bignell's work. Studio C, tho, does have a long and positive reputation. If you do get it backed, are you looking to have the work done in the UK? Or is shipping overseas an option?

Another backer to consider would be Mario Cueva at Lumiere Poster Restoration:  http://www.lumiereposterrestoration.com/

That's a great poster, Paul.
And in very fine condition.
I don't think I would get it backed.
Just my 2 cents.
 cheers

Put it in a mylar pocket under weight and the fold lines (if that's what bothers you) will diminish in no time. This poster is in too nice condition to be backed.

I paid £450 for it. I used to own a rolled copy which I bought 4 years ago for £500 but sold it to another collector when he offered me quite a bit more than what I paid. I'm gutted I let it go now hence why I bought this. I'll probably keep unbacked for now but was worried about the slight pin hole separation.

Thanks
Paul

Understood.

The poster does seem in good and stable condition.

I would only really consider the linen backing if it was going to be properly framed behind museum glass.

(Can't believe you sold the rolled copy, and I am not even a SW fan)

Paul, those small "pinhole" areas of separation could also be mended individually, as well, from the back, if you wanted. Archival mending tape (Filmoplast or Lineco come to mind) could be the ticket (using very small pieces), to arrest and keep those holes from getting larger.

Just me 2¢ worth.

That is far too good to back, listen to what Mark says, find somewhere flat and put weight on it, and it will look amazing in no time...

Hey Paul, did you decide to do the "weight and wait" method with this quad, so that the fold creases would be gently more flattened over time?
