Title: How to frame a linenbacked poster?
Post by: Monster_A_GoGo on July 26, 2016, 07:46:49 PM
It is NO SECRET that I am NOT a fan of linenbacked posters. However, I bought one not too long back without realizing it...and I have my eye on another (I really want the poster--not the linenbacking, but what can you do?). My question is, since they are so flipping heavy, how do you properly frame/hang linenbacked posters? (This question also applies to my two Ghana posters, which are on rice bags...how do you frame those?)  Thanks!

Robert of Spotlight Displays could hook you up with frames for your linen backed posters, Shawn. Here's his thread where he mentions his frames used to house a linen backed 3 sheet:

Depends on what your goals are.

Unframed:I see a lot of linen backed posters simply tacked to the wall through the linen (assuming there is enough border around the poster), or grommetted through the linen and tied to a bar to hang straight so it doesn't sag in the center.

Framed: If you really want to frame, professional framers will just hinge it along the top border of linen and frame normally.  But non-professionally, any frame that will press the paper to the acrylic should be able to hold it's weight since the linen is semi-rigid.  If you live in a wet climate, You should probably get a mat to keep some air space, and hinge it along the top border of linen to keep it from slumping over time.

JEFF: Ha!  I actually READ that post. I went through the entire FRAMING & STORAGE section looking for answers to my linenbacked framing question. I think it didn't register with me as NO WHERE in the body of the conversation does it mention linenbacking...just in the thread's title. Ha! Thanks though. I'll keep that company in mind. (This will be down the road a bit, after all.)

laikaislost: Zowie! Another quick response. (Yours appeared while I was typing the note to Jeff.) I HAVE considered the unframed approach as you've suggested, having seen examples on here a few times. However, i would be worried about staining and/or tearing the poster(s) in some way if I did it that way. Framing is the way I'd like to go...but THANK YOU so much for responding. I'll have a pro do it. I would not know what to do with the extra linen on the edges. Tuck them under somehow?  Hmm.

CHEERS!

Hey Magg, the Congo Crossing on my wall is on heavy linen in a Spotlight Display frame.

The frames can easily handle the extra weight, its not an issue.  Just make sure you add the extra inch or two to the sides when placing your order (so a bit bigger than a one sheet size)

CRAZY VICK: GORGEOUS poster! Thanks for sharing. Did you just order the frame and do it yourself...or did you send the linened poster to them to frame it?

For you its a no-brainer because. 1-you're in the US so shipping is cheap and the frames are great quality and 2-with SOO MANY posters you'll appreciate how easy it is to switch them up!

Well, for the linebacked one(s?), I doubt I'll ever switch them out. I have a feeling they'll be somewhat of a pain to deal with.  But--hurray!  IU'll take the cheaper shipping. Ha!  CHEERS!

Yeah, swapping a 3 sheet is a pain, be it Roberts front loader or a conventional rail frame.  But forever is a long time.  Eventually you will have another 3 sheet you will want in there.  I seem to swap mine out every 8-10 years.  I have traditional rails which need to be disassembled and then put together over a new sandwich of acryllic, poster and foamboard.  Last swap took me 5 hours, but the poster was not backed and in 2 pieces.  It has been up for 4 years now and the bottom section has slipped 1 1/2 inches.  I will be taking it apart soon and swapping it out.  This time I will use conservation tape and secure the halves.

Hi jayn_j.  Thanks for the note. I don't have a 3-sheet (at least i don't believe I do). I was inquiring about the one linen-backed poster I have (and possible others that may find their way to me).  I do have a few Italian 4Fs that I may want to frame some day as well---and those, as you know, come in two pieces. So I may need to do the archival tape trick as well. Ho hum. Thanks

I have this issue as well.

I have some really gorgeous 1940's backed one sheets that deserve to be displayed and not rolled away in a tube.

I am based in the UK - I need help in how to frame these bad boys!

From reading the forums it's best to get an inch larger all the way round frame than a one sheet to accommodate the linen but then you have to buy a custom frame which makes it expensive!

Thoughts and ideas people?

Thanks

I learned how to mat and frame myself.  It’s not that complicated.  For the cost of a regular (and usually expensive) frame job, you can buy a professional mat cutter, cut the mat, mount the poster with a top hinge as suggested by others, and drop it into a frame.  Even making the frame is not hard.  All you really need is a jointer, or manually.  Check our a few YouTube vids.  All in, you could buy all the hardware, every bit of it, for around 450 bucks new.

Such an adventure!  And, hinged, the poster basically hangs in the frame so no warping or wrinkles :)

Spotlight Displays also sells custom sizes that have worked well for me for both linen backed and unbacked posters.  Prices seem very reasonable to me.  Okie
