Title: Thai Movie Posters
Post by: thaimovieposter on May 24, 2016, 04:43:12 AM
Thai movie posters have many different sizes and they were all dependent upon the demands of the right owners of the movies.
There were many companies importing movies and using different printing sizes and this is why Thai posters will come in different sizes.
Paper quality and size will usually depend on the following factors:

    1. Price of paper in the different time period
    2. Budget of the rights owner in marketing the movie
    3. Relationship between the rights owner of the movie and printing company
    4. Current economy in Thailand.

    Small size approximately 15X20 inches
    Standard size approximately 21 X 31 inches
    Big size approximately 28 X 41 inches
    2 Sheet approximately 42 X 62 inches

Pea, are all 4 of these sizes still produced in Thailand today with regularity?

Or are some less common Or more common than other sizes?

Is the 2 sheet size (42x62) much more rare?

Hey Jeff, from what I know the smaller posters were made in the 60's.  I've also noticed the smaller posters were used for more Japanese movies released in Thailand than any other country.  There were other countries that used the size but Japan seems to be predominant.  The smaller posters were also mainly picture collages though I have also seen several hand painted ones.

There were very irregular larger sizes for Thai movies in the 60's, but I have also noticed the larger 28 x 41 sizes were more from the 1980's.  There are a few other sizes as well that are larger than the standard 21 x 31.  The 2 sheet posters I believe started coming out in the mid to late 1970's.  I believe the standard size produced today is still approx 21 x 31.

Some of the best quality posters were from the 60's when a lot of the printing was sent to be done in Hong Kong.  They used an excellent printing process and great paper that has kept some of the older posters in super great shape up to this day with very slight browning around the edges.  The really thin paper for the Thai posters I believe started surfacing around the mid 70's.  I was also told one time that it was common practice to print a handful of posters on nice shiny paper that would be used in the windows of the theaters and lesser quality thin paper that was used to plaster the posters up around town.  Sometimes none would be printed on the shiny due to financial reasons.  That why a lot of times you will see a ton of posters on the thin paper and only a few surfacing on the shiny.  TOTAL RECAL is a good example.  An example of posters only being printed on the thin matte paper would be EVIL DEAD 2.  There were no shiny posters printed for that film due to budget.

I wish I knew more.

Mike

Thanks for posting all of this, especially about the smaller format, too. That was a size I wasn't familiar with.

Most of the Nikkatsu movies released in Thailand starring Joe Shishido were the smaller size.

I believe the standard size produced today is still approx 21 x 31.

As far as I know, this is true. All the modern Thai posters I've seen listed on eBay (from movies released in 2000 onward) are 21 x 31, give or take a few quarter inches.

Pea..why did the painted posters stop being made? Was it too expensive? I'm thinking it is also easier and cheaper (world-wide and not just Thailand), to create digitally, photo-shopped poster imagery?

All boils down to cost.  Look at these examples of posters for two John Woo films made three years apart.  The beautiful hand painted poster by Tongdee for THE KILLER ('89) and then the very shitty Photoshop poster for HARD BOILED.  THE KILLER obviously took a good amount of time (costly) and HARD BOILED probably took two hours at best (cheap cheap cheap).  I'm sure if Tongdee had painted a poster for HARD BOILED it would have been one of his best works.

Thanks, Mike. Truly not even a comparison, aesthetic-wise in those 2 examples. And why globally, the photoshopped/digitized creations are what we have today, for the most part.  :-\

Now posted in the right section (Authentication) so ignore it here, thanks!

Hey! guys,

I was going to make a thread to ask about this, but, thought this would be a good place to post my question.

Basically, I've just started to come across these Thailand posters and I'm truly amazed at how good some of the artwork is on them, IMO some of them have some of the best artwork I've ever seen on movie posters.

What I'd really like to know is how safe it is to go after these Thailand posters, in other words have any of you got any good tips at all in making sure your buying the real deal and not re-prints/fakes? so are there any good things to look out for so you can be sure of what your buying?

For example I really like some of the horror Thailand posters for classic films like Evil Dead & A Nightmare On Elm Street, are these safe to buy or often faked?

I really like the look of these posters but just don't know enough about them, any helpful tips at all would be "GREATLY" appreciated.

Thank You!

To Live and Die In L.A. (1985)

I did my best to find another example of the poster, but haven't seen any pictures or auctions of it anywhere. One of my favorite Friedkin movies, so I was shocked to find this artwork, having had no idea it existed. Can't wait to get it framed.

Took a lot of pictures since it's the only example I could find of it online. They link to Imgur for the full resolution.

I've seen a couple and even (unfortunately) passed on one at a time where I had ZERO dollars to spend on posters. I'm pretty happy with my Godzilla Thai collection though so it softened the blow.

Jeff here is a closeup of that signature on the other style. Pea would know who it is...I can not remember at this time:

Thanks also Crowzilla for letting me know you have this poster as well!  I also have the Ghidorah B2, though I like this Thai painted image better. King Kong vs. Godzilla, Thai style!  How do you like the guy falling from Kong's grasp? This poster is a good example of having the Thai/Buddhist Era year in the bottom right corner: 2506.  Thus, 2506-543=1963.

And of course it should be noted that this was for the re-release of the film, not the original 60s release.

That's definitely not one you see everyday!  Thanks for sharing it, Crowzilla. Okie

Adding to the Thai Chidorah and Godzilla movie posters. A lot of english description (for thai movie) although likely to have been translated from Japanese to Thai and then English so makes for amusing reading.

You sure are right, ab8mf!  The first time I saw this poster in Thailand, I loved the image, and also enjoyed a good laugh as well.  You just made me laugh again!  Oh man, it's a very cool and unintentionally funny poster.  Okie

Hi ab8mf! To compliment your great Fire Walker poster, here's my favorite poster by Kwow -that I have- from The Killing Fields.  Thailand was probably the closest this movie ever officially got to Cambodia.  From the signature information,  Kwow painted it in 1985 and the poster is dated 2528 -543 = 1985 as well.  Okie

I Bombed Pearl Harbor (Storm Over the Pacific). A simply beautiful Thai painted poster.  Starring the incredible Yosuke Natsuki and Toshiro Mifune.  My buddy who was in the US Air Force said he saw one of the original WWII Japanese pilots who was also in this movie speak during a presentation on Pearl Harbor:  Amazing!  Released in Thailand in 2505 - 543 = 1962.

I'm not exactly sure what the original Japanese name is for this movie from TOHO.  This Thai poster says the name is Man's Paradise.  I didn't see a name like that in the TOHO movie list.  Does someone else know the original name for this movie?  It was released in Thailand in 2507 - 543 = 1964.  Okie

Another based on the International Japanese B1 (and quite rare).

"Hanuman Meets the Five Red Ants!"  My Thai mom-in-law helped me with the literal translation.  This is a Thai Kamen Riders movie produced in Thailand circa 1974/1975.  There are two versions of this poster: one version has the Chiclets gum advertising and the other version does not.  The Chiclets version pictured here is for the Empire and Rama theatre run of the movie that started on March 15th.  Okie

I apologize in advance for the gory nature of this poster, though it is an important spirit/ghost part of Thai folk stories.  This poster by Chamnong is from the Phi Pop (Female Floating Head Ghost/Spirit Entrail Eating and similar spirits)  series of Thai movies.  If you have seen and/or heard of the Thai movie "Pop Body Jumper" from 2001, it is the same genre.  Yucky, eh!? I'll post some more Phi Pop posters, if you all want me to do so after seeing this gross one.   Okie

This is surely one of the finest of all Thai horror posters - THE HOWLING. Painted by Tong Dee. The design and execution are a hundred times better than on other posters for this film from other countries. I did have a second copy of this, but sold it many years ago.  So rare. You can pick up US one-sheets for this film very easily, but I seriously doubt if more than five or six of the Thai version exist... maybe not even that many.

I fear that many Thai films have never been given an English-language title, have never been shown outside Thailand and have never been entered on imdb or other movie databases.  All we can do is attempt to translate the title from the Thai and see what we come up with... hence a Google search is very unlikely to come back with anything.

The TERMINATOR lobby cards I've never seen before, so must be rare.  WHEN COMEDY WAS KING was painted by Neet, who some of you will know for his amazing Thai posters for DAWN OF THE DEAD, PHANTASM and HALLOWEEN.  KING KONG LIVES  was painted by Tong Dee, who needs no introduction on here.  Keep the Thai posters coming! Here is the Thai poster for SNAKE WOMAN. I know nothing about this film. I believe it is the film on imdb listed as REN TOU SHE,  a 1983 Taiwan film. Can anyone advise? Regardless, the poster is a real tour de force. As ever, the Thai artist (anonymous in this case) really gives full value for money, packing details into every inch of his canvas.  Do click on the image and expand it to enjoy everything that is going on. My guess is that the artist is Poj (aka Supoj).

Just remembered there was a controversy on here some time ago about the use of watermarks.  What is the accepted position?

Great Dr Phibes poster, much better than the UK and US version!

Here's another little masterpiece painted by Tong Dee.  Click on the image and zoom in to really appreciate the amount of detail and care that have gone into this. Every scale on the woman's body and every bat in the background is carefully painted. Can anyone translate the Thai title?

Just picked up this House II Thai poster by correct me if I’m wrong, Jinda.

Anyone else get anything recently?

Let’s keep this thread going! These posters are great.

I couldn't agree more.  This thread has made me want to collect Thai posters many times over.  Alas, I haven't seen many of them lately.

Nice going, Antoine! I don't recall seeing Manhatten Baby, Scream and Scream, or the Jinda glowing head carrying girl ones before. Cool Beastmaster, too! Okie

Godzilla vs The Thing (Mothra) Thai style.  I think I actually saw this exact same poster in Thailand once, though ended up buying it at Bruce's auction in 2018.  I wanted to buy it in Thailand those many years ago, though I recall the price seemed high to me back then.  I saw there's also a nice looking version of this poster on eBay right now. Thai year 2507 - 543 = 1964  Best. Okie

Thanks Okie!  The one you describe as "the Jinda glowing head carrying girl" is for the movie Incubus, a trashy little Canadian supernatural thriller from 1982 with the great John Cassavetes as the lead.  The main design is actually based on the original Canadian poster.  Manhattan Baby is a rather mediocre Italian flick made that same year by the maestro Lucio Fulci, and Scream and Scream Again is an odd but entertaining early 1970s sci-fi/horror hybrid which combined the talents of the era's reigning horror stars: Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Hey Antoine,

Some fantastic Thai posters shown here faint2.gif

Always liked the Elm Street & Flash Gordon in particular, if you don't already have it then I'd highly recommend picking up the portrait version of Flash Gordon as well (also by Tongdee) a lot of people seem to prefer the portrait version, I think both versions are great!

Congrats on the pick ups notworthy.gif
