Title: Your Latest Graphic and Fine Art Buys
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on August 15, 2010, 11:23:48 AM
This "Latest Acquisitions" section doesn't have a general acquisitions thread, so I'll start one.

Just got this "Elekra Luxx" silkscreen 18x24 print from heroandsound.com  (http://heroandsound.com/)

P.S. I've been trying to get the "Women In Trouble" and "Electra Luxx" official movie posters with no luck - any help much appreciated.

Alamo Wolfman by Martin Ansin - exquisite and even better in person:

You can pick it up for a reasonable (not extortionate) price from Expresso Beans members here (http://www.expressobeans.com/members/detail.php/118451/trades).

I have most of the ones (Bride, Phantom, Star Trek, Wolfman) I want.  I'd like to get the Metropolis too.  I can live without Parnassus.

Well this belongs in two threads actually .. This one and the unicorn thread .. But I chose this one instead because its more along the fine art side of things instead of movie art ..

Nice Fallen! Just don't be puttin' on airs thinking you're better than the "I-buy-cheesy-looking-Yoda-posters" crowd here!  8)

The seller of this print was unintentionally funny:

(1) This is a "somewhat sought after print" - kudos for honesty, thumbs down for a dumb sales slogan.

(2) "As to the reason for its possible sale, my fiancé doesn’t particularly care for this print..."  In other words, "I'm 100% catwhipped"....

LOL .. Heck no I wont be looking down upon the low brow movie art collecting community !! :P  (I bought a Yoda too! :))

As for this print.. I feel at the moment like a I got a great deal .. Its already custom framed and ready to hang .. Its also supposed to be in mint condition .. Ive see some in lesser condition sell for about the same without frames and one that was said to be in excellent condition that sold for a couple hundred more once again without a frame. So hopefully it makes it to its home safe and sound then it will be the best buy Ive had all year !!!

I was actually a little disappointed with my Dracula poster .. I got the black and white one as well and the lettering is amazing but the artwork inthe middle just didnt feel as clean and (to me) felt like a cheap photocopy of something else .. There could have been a lot of detail in there which i feel would have made this poster amazing .. But Im guessing photoshop is winning out over actually drawing these things anymore :(

Now you have one in front of you Mel,can i ask ? Wonka has pointed out many times that there are subtle almost subliminal additional images within some of these prints.Thats what makes some of them so exciting.
I`ve noticed the Vampire Bats head top right but is there anything that you have picked out on this one?

You know, that was my initial reaction but for some reason it looks significantly more impressive when framed.  It would look really cool in a Gothic frame. (I can't find the frame I really wanted but this one is similar.)

And Stew I haven't spotted anything not obvious.

This place has some pretty cool, big (5"+) frames for reasonable prices: http://www.wholesaleartsframes.com/categories/High-Quality-Frames/

If you want them in a flat black I know some painting techniques that would be easy...

Sorry for the poor pic, it looks much better than shown.

Paul, you gotta spring for an $80 copy of Photoshop Elements - well worth it:

Reduce shadows
Remove color cast
Correct camera distortion
Voila!

Paul's image looks far better, in my opinion.  The colors are brighter and the image itself is crisper.  The "corrected" version looks a bit washed out.

Somehow I suspect that Mel's is more true to the color of the original.   Notice the green cast to the white border in the original.  Mel probably used auto correction for color, balance and contrast and came up with what he did.

BTW, that said, I can't believe I never knew about the lens correction feature in photoshop.  Thanks for that tip, Mel.

Well, before we go printing these...

If it is not too much trouble Mel, why don't you post a super close up of Franky's face and maybe some credit detail at your highest available resolution.  I'd like to see how it would stand up at print resolutions.

I don't have the "blow up" software necessary to print it up at 27x41 size.  (That costs $150 - not willing to spend that $$ to print repros.)

This appears to be a decent repro for sale for $90 (http://cgi.ebay.com/BRIDE-FRANKENSTEIN-27x41-one-sheet-movie-poster-/200412853446#ht_3361wt_907) with "money back" guarantee.

Imagine, I have nearly 900 items that I need to put into an update, and I pick this one to post right now.  This is a great print by one of the guys at EB.  Nice to know that with places like Cinema Overdrive and artists like this, that Alamo won't rule the movie print world.

I think these go in this section.... I've just got these from a local artist, who's very into the Horror genre. As he's going in another direction with regards to how he paints. he's clearing out some older stuff...... cue, me  ;D

He was going to add back grounds to the Werewolf, and Creature from Curse of Frankenstein for me, but is a bit rushed at the moment to finish some new pieces for an exhibition he's having at the end of October.

The Curse of the Werewolf painting is rather wide...

Some awesome monster art there, Mr. Waines.  Really like that Videodrome too.

My first prints.  Probably not the start of a new genre in my humble collection, but I think they are epic prints.  Thanks Ves.  Top notch packaging and everything was perfect.

I think this Willy Wonka would have more of an impact if it were in a larger format like a one sheet, but still very nice.  As Shcan mentioned, this print from Chuck Sperry is very high quality.

Both versions for Scarface are awesome.  The traditional one sheet design is not really my style, for various reasons, so I'm definitely stoked to have these for an iconic film.

Excellent! I was actually in San Francisco last week for work.  I went over to the Haight-Ashbury district and took these pics of the Red Vic, which recently closed. They are having a poster sale on October 8.  I saw one of the Wonkas posted in the lobby:

This one just arrived from Lure Design Inc. (http://www.luredesigninc.com/)  The best paper I've seen for the movie IMO.  A great movie that really deserved better original paper, the teaser with the 12 Monkeys symbol is alright, and the others, well, I'll just say that I've been noticing myself steering away from the "floating heads" art (even though I already have one with the "floating head" art  :-\).  This print is very high quality, on cardstock, and is numbered.  There are still some available.  Shipping was lightning fast and it was packaged well.  http://www.luredesigninc.com/store/cult-classic-movies/12-monkeys (http://www.luredesigninc.com/store/cult-classic-movies/12-monkeys)

I wanted to throw out a kudos to an artist whom Dave turned me onto.  Remember the Goonies screening he mentioned.  Well the artist's name is Amy McAdams-Gonzales and I ordered two of her prints; a Goonies and Lolita.  She was awesome to deal with...  They aren't number runs and are in 11"X17" format, but they are just too good to pass up...  If you want to check out her store - https://www.etsy.com/people/AmyMcAdamsDesign

Nice prints Charlie! ;)

I was on Amys Facebook page and found this pic from a previous auction. I am going to have to send her an email and see if there are any of these laying around still! :)

My wife and I purchased a David Bromley piece (called 'Charlotte') not so long ago, it now hangs in our informal lounge (with our pet canvases). My wife fell in love with it and that was the end of that, no chance to discuss it  :P that said, I do like it too.

Ari, Ari, Ari...  ;)

Actually, Stephanie and I have wine and cheese every Friday night, we sit at the breakfast bar (the part of the kitchen bench with a place to stick our legs under), we do it because it is a good way to relax from the week that was. It goes back to the days of Friday nights drinks after work before drink driving etc etc. So now we do it at home, sometimes our neighbours drop by because they can walk home! Nothing special I can assure you, red and/or white white, some cheddar, crackers, bread stick a few other bits and pieces and that's about it.

As to the informal lounge name, I dunno what else to call it, it's the only name we can give it because 'laundry', 'kitchen' and 'garage' were already taken and we do have three lounges (the place where we have lounge suites) so we have to call them something so we know which one we are talking about!  ;D

My step-dad (a Pom) had one of these, she went everywhere whenever we moved. Like you say, not sure why, but I think the brits of the late(?) 60s liked that sort of thing, sexy dark skinned native girl, specially when they look at their pasty white skinned wives...

So after 7 years of marriage and a 5 year drought of pickin' (because my wife didn't really dig it and sort of made me stop) she says lets go yard-salin' and see if we can find paintings/art prints...  I was thinking, since I am getting this desire to start framing my posters, that I can find some interesting frames to modify...

So we hit it from 7:15 to 8:45.. (I had a tennis lesson at 9AM or we could have spent all morning). So I am at some random suburban home and picked up this super cool photo of an Indian in head dress watering his horse...  It was signed at the bottom as being printed from original negatives something or other - but the image was so awesome I didn't really care. I asked for the price... 'oh a dollar?' She says. "Yeah sure... I'll take it and what about that one in the aluminum frame?'  "two dollars?"  So I bring them home.  We also got a retro chair with green pleather that I plan to re-cover in leather and a nice model ship of a 1800s sail boat...  We had fun.  So today I start messing with the Indian picture and it has a stamp of the back about 'The Curtis Project"...

The Picture:

Come to find out after a bit of research this was a seventies reprint from an Edward Curtis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_S._Curtis) original negative by a Jean Anthony DuLac...  He was taking old negatives and reprinting them - and he was the first one to do it. Originals Edward Curtis prints run in the thousands of dollars...

Jean-Anthony DuLac created a small body of goldtones in the 1970s, which are not clearly or easily delineated from the vintage ones.

http://edwardcurtis.com/collectors-guide

So I took my $1 photo and put it in a frame and am getting a lot of satisfaction every time I pass it by...

So the other excitement is that when I looked up the value of the print, it ranged from $100 to $300... And my wife (calculating $300 -$1 = $299) is all excited and wants to go yard-salin' again...   woohoo

Charlie,

THAT is a great looking image. Congrats on the pickup. You had an Antiques Roadshow moment...  thumbup

Was Jean-Anthony DuLac's name part of what was printed on the back of the photo? I checked out the website, too. Very informative.

The framing looks great, too. It shows it off well.

There was a 'Curtis Project' stamp with the DuLac info on the back of the photo, so all is good there... Pretty amazing to find it - seller had no idea.  My wife said I should have taken a photo of how it looked in the old frame; like it had been sitting in someone's garage for 20 years - may have been.

Last year I made the disastrous decision to sell my Mondo Universal Monsters collection.  Even though I made some money, they all skyrocketed after I sold them and they were a huge loss artistically, of course:

To remedy my error, I've spent the proceeds from the original sale to buy 8 new Mondos and 4 new S2 Art Group (27x41) recreation lithographs:

Fallen.. those look like oils? Or a giclee print of some kind? And who is the artist? They are all really very nice.

Congrats to both!  clap

Thanks, these are the first of 6 or 7 that I picked up. They are giclee on canvas, limited edition, signed, numbered and hand embellished by the artist Csaba Markus. The others that we are still waiting on are larger than these, as soon as they come in I'll snap a few photos of them all together.

Both versions for Scarface are awesome.  The traditional one sheet design is not really my style, for various reasons, so I'm definitely stoked to have these for an iconic film.

Brandon, these 2 prints are incredible! Just fantastic!  cheers

Do you know who the artist is?  And what size are they?

Thanks.

Interesting to see that post from 2011.  To clarify, I had originally picked them up because I'm a fan of the movie, and they're a great alternative to the classic artwork.  I also didn't want to be like every rapper on MTV Cribs, and I wanted to search for stuff that's not on the popular, "coolest/best" list.  However, I eventually decided to be one of the "cool kids" and pick up an original theater poster.  Lawl

Anyway, they're 18"x24", and were done by Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative.  Here's a site with more info. and good photos:  http://insidetherockposterframe.blogspot.com/search?q=scarface (http://insidetherockposterframe.blogspot.com/search?q=scarface)

Dr Lakra etching, edition of 50, for my wife.   I don't know if you know Dr Lakra, a mexican tattoo artist.
A gallery decided to have their stock of Dr Lakra print on Ebay auctions, I had very hard time to win one (most sold for 70-80 usd) and got lucky on the few last ones, got it for 32 usd.
There are now all on Ebay again, f*cking flippers... some at crazy price - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dr-Lakra-Mod-10-Rare-Hand-Signed-Numbered-Original-Etching-Made-in-2008-/272282884788?hash=item3f65531ab4:g:3TYAAOSwM4xXawf7

Invader Sao Paulo map (you know Invader ???) for my daughter. Currently in her room. Unfolded, edition of 100, signed. 2011
(http://www.artcollectorz.com/assets/managed/images/cache/ADTAAAAA6QAV2AIAAAAAB5ABLUA7777774AAAAAA6YAV4AIA.jpg)
Bought it for 40 usd early this year... then for no reason, the following month prices for Invader went up the roof and this map is valued now between 900 and 1200 usd.  Crazy people !

Let the record reflect that I, er, "inaccurately" opined that "probably blow up $500+ post-Mondocon...."

Never postulated they would reach the $2,000+ Jaws1 level.

Do artists still get and sell copies as payment? No reference on LD's FB page.

Not enough science fiction lately, so maybe that would work, Okie. I can never tell whether these foil versions will look right from the photos - the border always bothers me, and I never thought the foil suited the Delort Universal Monster set after it arrived. Maybe I'll frame and matte most of it out when I get it. It did seem to go with the subject matter this time. If not, I'll use it to phone home...

I found this hobby much too late in life. And then I found there were a few prints that I missed by years - prints I really, really wanted. After finding the original prices for these prints, and discovering the flippers' outrageous markup, it hurt to buy from them. A lot. But I'm always looking, and now and then I find a seller who's willing to negotiate. And here's where T swears he'll never buy from them - and I understand. But dammit, there are those few images I can't get out of my head. This is one of them. It's over five years old, but new to my collection. And yeah, I paid too much. And I don't care.

Well, if you can’t avoid it...

Posters are one thing, they belong to studios, corporations, and if people want to make a profit out of selling extras, more power to them.  Like with everything else in this world, there will always be a few individuals/dealers who just rape the system by outrageously increasing their profit margin.  They will never get my business.

But prints are very limited, and they really belong to the few boutiques and artists who make them.  I hate seeing a print go on for sale, a bunch of true collectors miss it, and half of the prints suddenly pop up on eBay so that a bunch of greaseballs can make a few extra bucks.  I own more than 600 prints now, and I have only purchased a dozen on EBay.  I’m proud of that.

T

Post by: Dr Bill on April 20, 2019, 01:37:51 PM
I've let a lot of them go - I mean the idea that I have to own them. There only a few more that I'm obsessed with - the Horkey/Zouravliov Dracula, Kurtz's Ex Machina foil, and his Clockwork Orange variant (which I've finally added). Of course there are lots of Durieux prints I'd like but will never have, but every now and then I see one at a price I can't pass up.

I'm just now learning about the various galleries and private artists, and how to get alerts when the drops occur. Finding and following EB is really putting a hole on my pocket, but at least I'm buying at original cost - and the money goes to the artist.
Title: Re: Your Latest Graphic and Fine Art Buys
Post by: eatbrie on April 20, 2019, 03:52:36 PM
There are so many prints out there, if I miss one, I move on to the next one.  They are not that important to me, which is also why I don’t go to EB.  People freak out over a little piece of paper and it freaks me out.

There are about 10 prints I’d like to add to my little collection, but all are in the $1000s and I refuse to pay the mark up.  Like I said, I move on.

I've bought <15 from secondary market too...I also prefer to get them at source or move on to the next one.

Being in the UK, I miss out on the drops that happen at gallery shows/conventions, so sometimes that stings a bit (a kind friend does help me out when he can). There are a few I'd like, maybe one day I'll trade for them one day.
Title: Re: Your Latest Graphic and Fine Art Buys
Post by: eatbrie on April 23, 2019, 10:59:42 AM
I have a great friend who is extremely connected and knows everyone.  That helps a lot.  I don't follow the market at all, so he's the one who informs me of upcoming drops or private commissions I might be interested in.  He also goes to galleries and buys extras for me.  I probably bought at least 100 prints with his help.  He never asks for anything in return, so I buy him lunches when we get together and I've gifted him a few extras over the years.

But yes, I agree, trading is the only way to go.  No money exchange.

I missed out on the original Vice Press release because it sold out instantly. Gabz is selling the Artist Print on his site, signed and numbered. Costs a little more, especially with postage tacked on, but worth it if you missed the VP release.
