There really were a lot of members only threads. It's cool that visitors will be able to see the wealth of info. here

Not really.
The more limited / "closed off to lurk-ers threads" was done, after there was some discussion that people that never contributed to the forum could come in and reap the images/collections/research that members had done, without ever giving back.
But that change to the board was never etched in stone.
So here we are again! ;)
