I like this set of Great Gatsby banners very much (DS 5X8 Feet). The colors are very vibrant. My phone camera are doing them an injustice.

BLACK SABBATH French medium size movie poster I got.  Here's a question for you all - I know French posters come in large and medium sizes (and some small).  This BLACK SABBATH poster has the same design for the medium and large.  Many of the Hammer posters have completely different images for the medium and large sizes.  Can you tell me what the two sizes were used for?   Was the medium size BLACK SABBATH poster I have released at the same time the larger poster was?  Thanks all and hello again to everybody.

Yes, they were printed at the same time.  Sometimes the artist, like Grinsson, would be commissioned to do 2 versions, sometimes 1, sometimes he was rushed and could only do one, sometimes they didn't have the budget for 2.  Both size, large and medium, were used inside the theater lobby.  The smaller size came later, in the 70s, and replaced the medium size.

The smaller size came later, in the 70s, and replaced the medium size.

Interesting, but you do see a 'lot' of the smaller size for '60s films, particularly films like The 400 Blows, Cleo from 5 to 7, and the ubiquitous La Dolce Vita.  Are those actually '70s reissues then and not original release?  That would explain the apparent unending supply of Dolce Vita smalls.

No, they're original releases and they're actually even smaller than the 70s/80s one.  I guess you could say that both the smaller size (the one you referred to) and the medium size (above) morphed into the affichette of today.  So you're right, there were 3 sizes through the 50s/60s, then 2 died and were replaced by a 4th size, still prevalent today.

Ari I like that you got Blood Beach.  One time Burt Young was having coffee alone near where I lived and being a fan I started a conversation with "Hey I love the fact that you were in Blood Beach!"  I think this caught him off guard (probably because he gets so many approaches with Rocky and Chinatown) and he invited me to sit.  We chatted for half an hour about his career and the current state of the studio system.  Super nice guy.

Here are two more recents all snug in new frames ready to be hung.  I'd never seen the original BREATHLESS Belgian before...didn't know it existed.

TEAMweapon : RODAN!!!  Awesomeness! I've not seen that one before---but I love me my giant monster posters and i just recently got the US RODAN so I really appreciate yours.

Have you been raiding my my poster boxes? Or maybe we have similar tastes. I have all of those same posters, Ari.  I wish I had gotten to see SILENT MADNESS in 3D in the theaters...but it didn't play here. And SAVAGE INTRUDER has always intrigued me. I want to see that as well. Gail Sondergaard is third billed. She was the original choice to play the Wicked Witch in THE WIZARD OF OZ, but deemed too glamorous for the part--and so it went to Margaret Hamilton instead.

Also, when the makeup team was asked to do Sondergaard up in a more ugly/witch type makeup (for another test), she then refused and didn't want to appear, looking so plain, haggard and "witchy" on screen. Thank god the part went to Hamilton.  thumbsup.gif

Had this arrive today.

A stone litho Argentinean OS for the German movie, Der träumende Mund (Dreaming Lips) [1953], starring Maria Schell, & sister of actor, Maximilian Schell. I think the art of Schell on this piece is superb.

Little side 'fun factoid': After some close inspection & a little visual research, I determined that this same poster (meaning this same copy) was auctioned by EMP, back in February of 2005 (http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/16544325.html). The poster condition looks the same as it did back then, so it was treated with TLC, in the 11+ years since it was last seen and offered.

Have had a bunch of pick ups lately, mostly foreign Star Wars, but no time to really take pics of them. Did shoot this one real quick with my phone though. Have been looking for a nice rolled copy for a long time and finally gave up and picked up this tri-fold which is pretty clean. These buggers do not come up for sale for a decent price very often so was glad to take it when it appeared, these things are hens teeth.

Jeff, believe it or not this image was actually only used on three US printed posters, the two Revenge of the Jedi one sheets, dated and non, and the Spanish from above which was also printed here. I have yet to see the image used in any other production poster from the original release. It has been used a million times since then though including the most common 1993 10th anniversary Killian one sheets which had three different styles plus the proofs that are as common as the regulars it seems.

For those asking, the 2nd poster is a Russian "Enemy Mine" poster with hand written characters -- it was probably used in the Caucuses or somewhere similar (Azerbaijan maybe?).  I know this because Schan outbid me for the poster :)

Mike,

I was meaning that (like Struzan's art for BTTF), this same image was also used by other countries' posters as well, to advertise the film initially. I wasn't referring to its uses in the time since.

I think its a very cool image. And is likely why it was used around the world.

Sorry Matt, I do not recall realizing at the time who I was bidding against.  I think the painted on script is Mkhedruli, which would make it most likely from Georgia.  The other 2 Hungarian's are A1s.

Another British import arrived today. An actual proof quad for the Return of the Jedi complete with inky finger prints in the borders.

Still waiting on more imports that seem to be sitting in customs limbo for some reason. Have an Aussie piece that has been in Customs for over a week now and driving me nuts because it is one of my favorite posters and one I have never owned a copy of. Hopefully soon.

Mike, How did you learn or determine that this was a proof copy? (aside from the inky fingerprints).  ;D

It's semantics really, some call untrimmed, some proof, some printers test. I won't get into that argument. In short it is an untrimmed quad that measures roughly 31.5 x 41.5 with registration marks, etc. and ink smudged finger prints. If you look at these when they appear on the typical auction sites they describe these as proofs in many cases. Unlike most of those though this one is untrimmed all the way around whereas they are usually trimmed on two of four sides for some reason including about 1" lopped off of the right side in particular bringing the edge to about 1/4" from the printer info. What is it with them and trimming the right side of things?
Title: Re: April 2016
Post by: erik1925 on April 14, 2016, 03:19:23 PM
Thanks, Mike.

In looking at other copies of this, I had forgotten, too, that they don't have any kind of white border and are full bleed.

Thanks, Mike.

Yup, another interesting thing is depending on the side, when these are trimmed down they actually cut off up to an inch of color/print per side for the 30x40 and more for the 27x40 versions beyond removing the white border. This brings the cropping close to the printer info on the right and the NSS info on the bottom. Less is trimmed on the other edges.

Actually I never thought about it until now but I think every quad I have unless it is a white background which does not count is full bleed except for the Triffids.

Had this come today.

Another Argentinean OS for the French comedy called Les Gueux Au Paradis (1946) (English title: Hoboes In Paradise). I happened to see this movie at a film screening a few years ago and thought that Raimu and Fernandel were very funny together.

The art is by Osvaldo Venturi. The color is so vibrant and it looks like the original, large portrait art was done in watercolor and pencil.

Raimu and Fernandel are two of the BIGGEST French comedians of all time.  Very well known by any French speaking person.  At the time, it was very common for actors to have a made up name.  I grew up watching their movies on TV, even though they had been dead for years.  I'm not familiar with this particular comedy, but their faces are instantly recognizable.

First poster I've bought in months. I've wanted this one pretty much since I started collecting but it seemed like it was impossible to get. I even asked every random Italian poster seller on ebay if they had it, the majority didn't and the 1 or 2 that did said "For 300 Euros"  eyeroll... Well it seems like a few popped up on ebay out of nowhere and I finally scored one for a reasonable price. Anyone that hasn't seen it must check it out, it's a great and excellently creepy giallo.

Congrats man... it always seems to work like that, when you stop looking the thing you're looking for pops up.

I've never heard of the director, Pupi Avati. Did he only direct a few Giallo?

Thanks. Yeah it does seem to work that way.

He's directed quite a few movies, most I think were comedy/drama types. He did direct a good horror movie called "Zeder" and another decent horror flick "Arcane Sorcerer". Those are the only other movies of his I've seen. I believe this was his only giallo, which is a shame.

I like the juxtaposition of the working man struggling with daily life in the shadow of the tower of gold

no casino in there. the Gaming Board said to Donnie "Mr Trump, for the 4th time in 20 years - no, we will not license YOU for a casino. We find your connections to underworld figures and your apparent lack of good business acumen or a common decency found in other men anathema to running an honest business, like gambling.. Good day and good luck, or whatever"

yes folks.. 4 times refused.. says something about what they know.. now lets get back to posters and not a giant Tower of Drumpf

I'm glad you found it! I really like the design  thumbsup.gif

Never heard of Hoffman, but this note from Wiki kinda makes me want to see it: "Reportedly, Sellers despised Hoffman because the lead character too closely reflected his own personality. According to Bryan Forbes, who was head of the studio that financed the film, Sellers went through a depressive phase after filming was completed and he asked to buy back the negative and remake the movie. He also gave an interview where he said the film was a disaster."

It's a rare little gem and it could be argued (alongside Being There) to be Sellers' greatest acting performance. He played the character straight and natural and yes, Sellers tried to destroy the film and redo it using one of his typical over the top characters. I'm glad he didn't. A wonderful performance. It also meant that Sellers did little publicity for it and, when he did, he criticised it and the film was a flop. Another reason why I am so passionate about it - if Sellers didn't want you to see it then I just had to! and the fact it's a bugger to get paper for it - I like a challenge!

Yes, I hear you.  Ultra sensitive actors like Peter Sellers or Robin Williams hide their demons through an avalanche of comedy and have a very hard time dealing the realism that forces them to look at the man in the mirror.  I will check this movie out.

It looks like they offered not only production services (equipment, lighting, grip, facilities), but the company was also the production company for the movies, The Missouri Breaks and a co-production co. for The Man Who Would Be King and The Front.

Yes the Ghana posters are super cool.  It's challenging to know what release the poster represents though.  Movies have multiple posters made for the different releases and I'm not sure if they are well documented to show which ones are which.  I know the original Ghana posters that were from the 80's are really hard to come by and are very expensive.

Beautiful art on that one, Jeff. Congrats.

Thanks, Chris. What I like about it, aside from the beautiful re-drawn rendition of E Taylor, is that it has the look of a stone litho, even tho it's from 1965. I think I recall Ari calling ones done like this "hand litho daybills" that used this technique to create this look, rather than being offset printing.

Posters dont have serial numbers. What number are you looking at, or thinking is a serial number on a (or your) poster?

Not totally true, Jeff.  Disney posters from the 90s actually have serial numbers.

Also, older posters up to the end of the 80s did have numbers at the bottom right.  We don't call them serial numbers, though.  There are the year of release and the MPAA release number.

I forgot about Disney doing this kind of serial numbering on their posters. I was also curious if Aiden was referring to the NSS numbers too (and maybe so) but referring to them as such.

Thanks you guys! ;D   To be honest, I haven't even seen Camelot but the poster was just "too pretty" girly2.gif to pass up.

The Kill Bill B2s I really like but the "Kill is Love" one is by far the better poster, it hasn't shown up much on Yahoo auction so I grabbed it when I could.  It's printed on a heavier stock with a nice matte finish.

The Aliens is pretty good but unfortunately the tri-fold creases are pretty heavy, next up is get the "white border" version (with different lettering).

Cheers!
