Internet bidding begins on 10/27 for the Heritage November Signature auction. They have about 1500 posters listed right now, so I would think the field is set. My first question is, has anybody received thier catalogs yet? I have not.
Second question, if money was no object, which poster would you take home, even if you were bidding against Nicolas Cage?
Here is my answer to the second question:

I'd love to bid on this one....

but this one is mighty fine, too..

Tough choice. My first instinct is this one:
(http://images.ha.com/lf?source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fnewnames%2f300%2f7%2f1%2f3%2f4%2f7134210.jpg%5d%2ccontinueonerror%5btrue%5d&scale=size%5b450x2000%5d%2coptions%5blimit%5d&source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fwebuse%2fno_image_available.gif%5d%2cif%5b%28%27global.source.error%27%29%5d&sink=preservemd%5btrue%5d)
But that's a title card and rather small, so I guess I would go here instead:
(http://images.ha.com/lf?source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fnewnames%2f300%2f7%2f0%2f1%2f6%2f7016782.jpg%5d%2ccontinueonerror%5btrue%5d&scale=size%5b450x2000%5d%2coptions%5blimit%5d&source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fwebuse%2fno_image_available.gif%5d%2cif%5b%28%27global.source.error%27%29%5d&sink=preservemd%5btrue%5d)

I asked Grey yesterday & he said they get shipped at the end of this week.

Even with that crazy printing defect at the bottom that is making all the colors fade away?
No thanks, I'll wait for a better one.
-
I know Christmas is coming sooner than we all expect, and if one of you hasn't gotten my present yet the "Greed" window card would do quite nicely.
I'll act surprised, I promise.

Can you actually go and attend this auction in person? I am off that Friday; it might be a fun trip.... Plus being in Houston its not that big a trip.
-
yousure can Charlie

Okay, since crowzilla made me rethink my first pick, I guess I will have to go to Plan B as my ultimate pick:
(http://images.ha.com/lf?source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fnewnames%2f300%2f7%2f1%2f3%2f4%2f7134410.jpg%5d%2ccontinueonerror%5btrue%5d&scale=size%5b450x2000%5d%2coptions%5blimit%5d&source=url%5bfile%3aimages%2finetpub%2fwebuse%2fno_image_available.gif%5d%2cif%5b%28%27global.source.error%27%29%5d&sink=preservemd%5btrue%5d)
-
LMMFAO.. PLAN B.. LOL
laugh1
-
Not only is your Plan B poster a much better looking piece, it's rarer and will sell for more money than the other one.
Nice pick.

From a money no object point of view I really like the the Forbidden Planet, but then I saw the To Catch a Thief, stunning! But damn it that King Kong is tasty!!!!
So I've decided on this little beauty...
Now if only someone would outbid me on all the other auctions I'm winning I think I may have a stab at it! mesmrized
ps. It's the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban lenticular 1-sheet (25.75" X 40")!

I bet this Potter goes over or right near a grand.
-
Hmmm... I might say even more on that one. Given that there are (supposedly) only 6 in existence and that HP is like our generation's Star Wars... in 20 years this poster will be more or less the equivalent of the mythical US triple bill for the original trilogy. What do you think one of those would go for at auction today? I'm guessing whoever bids on this Potter lenticular is going to have that kind of long-term plan in mind... I would guess closer to $2-3K.
-
It very well could, was just saying be prepared to spend over 4 digits on it, because it could get nuts. The only thing holding it back is other than Holiday ;) , there are not a lot of people that will spend that much money on that new of a release.
The triple bill is such a bland poster the rarity is all it has driving it, that and the thousands of star wars collectors out there.
Potter has a drove as well, but the Potter fans in general are not of age to have the spending power of the Star Wars collectors.
-

correct Dale, however I think in 10 years Potter will be just as big as Star Wars in collector demand
-
Okey dokey, could I just check something else, as this poster we're talking about is from the (rumoured) less than 10 lenticular batch... what is the poster on the original thread that has the date at the bottom (June 4th) which seems to be an English language version of the French one on emovieposter at the moment?
http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,2289.msg34642.html#msg34642 (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,2289.msg34642.html#msg34642)
Is this a regular printed version on normal paper? I only ask as I haven't seen one of them either! The French version says '2 Juin' so I'm thinking if I find where the film was released on June 4th I may have the country!?
-
correct Dale, however I think in 10 years Potter will be just as big as Star Wars in collector demand
only with bigger supply, except for the few rare posters like this lenticular and the one you`re auctioning
-
Matias.. Star Wars #1 one sheets are as common as newspapers. I have a "stack" of them in my office
as a matter of fact, SW may be the most common poster of the modern era. it had 4 printings, all theatrical, during it's original release
-
Big difference between STAR WARS and HARRY POTTER posters are the art.
All of the original SW posters are great paintings.
Potter -- except for the first two posters -- are all photos.

If you include advances, I think there are two or three more. There is the SStone advance with the owl and one with the boats. But I could be wrong as usual. :D

These are the two I am referring to. I don't know of any other painted posters. I believe the boat poster is a manipulated photo.

They are both very sharp and I'm happy my copies are in NM condition. wynk

Tell.. most of the posters are not photos, though a number are photo-realistic and/or a combination of photo-realism and illustrative art
-
The Azkaban lenticular reminds me of the Nightmare Before Christmas Hell's Gate lenticular. Big money lenticulars both of them, but I'd rather save that few thousand for the Hell's Gate that I will have on day! Someone said recently that the Azkaban is ugly as fuck, and I think they're right. I've actually decided against buying either version, money being limited as it is. There's too many other things to buy. Same with the HP Sorcerer's onesheet that's coming up. I don't want to buy just because something is rare, and with the only difference being "sorcerer's" versus "philosopher's", it's not worth to me what the poster will command at auction.
-
Tell.. most of the posters are not photos, though a number are photo-realistic and/or a combination of photo-realism and illustrative art
If you mean manipulated photographic images, using Adobe or some other program, I agree.
I don't know of any other painted posters for the HP series other than the two I posted.
In the case of the STAR WARS posters, they are all paintings.
There is a big difference.
-
There are a couple of painterly posters for Hallows prt2 from India (and I think there were 4'x6' versions as well)... this is the one sheet, not sure if it's painted or computer manipulated.
But I do agree with Brude here, Star Wars poster art is in another league, that's not saying in 10-20 years time the Harry Potter generation is not spending serious money on Potter paper.
Have been doing my research on the Azkaban lenticular and found this interesting website and information, sounds similar to what people have been saying...

"Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban"
This is without a doubt the rarest poster I own. It is a lenticular teaser poster, as you move around the poster Sirius Black disappears from your view leaving an empty space (you can tell his shoulder and arm have started to disappear in the image). The thing that makes this poster so very rare is that only 6 were made. That's right, only 6 are in the entire world.
November of 2003, Warner Brothers was about to release their teaser posters for "Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban". Curiously, rather than releasing the expected Teaser posters instead they sent out a cardboard standee to be displayed in movie theater lobbies right before Thanksgiving. This standee was in the form of a lamp pole and on the lamp pole was a Wanted sign. This Wanted sign was made of cardboard and in the middle of the cardboard was a small lenticular card of Sirius Black. When you walked by, Sirius disappeared from sight. The full cardboard sign measured at 17 x 26 inches, while the removable lenticular card measured at 14 x 19 inches. After several months of waiting for a teaser poster of this movie to be released, around March of 2004 we were instead treated to the Final poster with the 3 kid's faces on it. Why didn't Warner's go ahead and release a full sized teaser poster for this movie? The other two Harry Potter movies had teaser posters. The gentleman, whom I purchased this from, gives us the story why:
"We had been given the go ahead to test run a full size lenticular poster for the third Harry Potter film, but right as they we going to press, WB canceled the order. We had to halt press in the middle of the job. Since lenticulation is a multi-step process, none of the run was completed, and they were all ordered to be destroyed; however, a few of us who run the actual machinery decided to finish the process on a few posters to use as samples for our other clients to see, so that they would have a reference piece to be able to judge whether lenticulation was suitable for their advertising or marketing needs. There are only six of these in the world. Nobody at Warner Bros. got one because they canceled the run. They changed some text info at the bottom of a similar image and opted for the mini 5x7 versions, which are much cheaper to produce. The holographic ones in the standees are foil printed and relatively cheap to manufacture. Just to give you an idea of why Warner probably opted to not use a full size poster, I can tell you that developing a template for the motion on this poster cost them over ten thousand dollars. That's before a single poster was ever printed to plastic. If they had ordered a run of 2000, it would have had an additional cost of $100 each. The cost of producing a smaller run is almost exponentially more expensive, because it ties up the machinery preventing other work from being done. Warner knew that the same amount of people would turn out for the next Harry Potter film regardless of what poster was used, so there was no need to incur gigantic costs on special posters. So essentially, the poster you have, cost over $10,000 to produce, in marketing and developing fees. I was not joking when I stated that this was the single rarest Harry Potter collectible. J.K. Rowling doesn't even own one."
-
I think I'm going to have to back out of my comment 'I think I may have a stab at this poster', the phrase out-of-my-league springs to mind ;D
-
On my research travels I also came across an auction on the bay for the original Azkaban standee, unfortunately the lamp post doesn't include the lenticular as they never received it! Interesting images of this lenticular version tho...

There is a reason for that. Hargon was the original source of all of this information to MPT.
I believe that he had two and sold his extra copy (to Randy?). Another copy was sold on MPT for $800 to the first person who replied. This was rather annoying because he then flipped in on eBay a few months later for something like $1,300. Another copy was auctioned off at the SDCC for not a whole lot (under $1000). Considering location and such, I would not be surprised, at all, if the SDCC copy was the one that ACME sold a while back on eBay...

I just gave it a once over. WOW. Lots of great stuff. Most of it out of my price range but it should be entertaining to watch pcorn and who knows I might even find one or two to bid on. 8)
To that question. Hard to pick just one. I like Charlie's To Catch a Thief choice. The Bond quads are very cool. I have always wanted an Italian 2F or 4F for the TGBU or a Rear Window one sheet or even this Its a Wonderful Life one sheet. I could go on and on but I will stop now. :P

Holy Shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That HP lenticular has an opening bid of 2500, and estimated value of 5-10K. Okay, Holiday that puppy is all yours. My wife would go ape shit if I spent that kind of money on any poster, let alone a Harry Potter. Well, I now think that is the ugliest poster I have ever seen, and would not pay 100 for it. ;D I guess Harry was right about the price, Dale.

In the end, I guess it doesn't matter, but I am not a big fan of early action on posters I set my sites on. I am tracking 15 posters, and 12 already have bids. And one is already at the pre-estimate price. >:(

My catalog came in today. That is the coolest part of the auction in my opinion. Reminds me of the old Sears Wish Book. My wife flipped through it earlier today. She liked the Shirley Temple posters and surprisingly the Forbidden Planet 1/2 sheet. If I had to choose that would be easy, though I must admit the Heidi poster does offer some nice artistry.

I'd feel guilty if I didn't bid in the auction.
I've spent so much money in their signature auctions that I *never* feel guilty during the auctions that I sit on the sidelines. Sadly, this will be one of those times... There are obviously plenty of awesome posters, but nothing I'm ready to shell out for at full market value ;)

My first HA catalog. Wow first class!

Only a week left before the actual auction. Yeah!!!!!!! qip
I am impressed with the pre-bidding on this SW poster. The next bid will put it over 4100.

It's pretty cool. Heritage says it was "never released to the public or used at the events."
But the Star Wars Poster Book (page 46) says it "isn't clear" whether it was sold to the public:
The notorious Star Wars Concert Poster has been laden with misconceptions and mystery ever since it was produced in 1978. Common lore has it that this poster was available to purchase for one night only at the Hollywood Bowl premiere of a Star Wars concert series. However, that concert where Zubin Mehta conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, took place on November 20, 1977, almost a full year before the poster was printed in October 1978. During the run of the tour, a handful of various posters were commissioned to advertise each specific venue. However, when the management of the series changed hands in the spring of 1978, it was deemed appropriate to unify the series under a single key illustration, which was the impetus for this classic artwork art directed by Suzy Rice and illustrated by John Alvin. But it isn't clear that these posters were ever available to the public. Therefore, they are rare and highly desirable.
-
There is ZERO chance that I would pay that kind of money for that thing.

Wow. Rich, that is a beaut! Yours?
Hal Foster (and Burne Hogarth) are two of the past Tarzan masters most of today's comic-book artists should/need to study.
They could draw rings around the current crop of 'artists.'
Do you have any of Foster's PRINCE VALIANT work?

Ted.. I once had one of the top collections of comic book & comic strip art in the world before I broke it up.
I was also known as having the best taste and only having top examples. I had many Foster Tarzans, but I only kept this one
here is a 1941 Val, a 1949 Hogarth that was exhibited at the Louvre (the first panel was blown up to 10 foot high for the entrance) and just for the hell of it, a Krazy kat from 1922
you can see other pieces I still have at
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=19939 including one of the best Spirit stories by Eisner and another best - Cheech Wizard story by Bode, plus pin up paintings (sorry for the pink tones. I shot these in the wrong light)

You have impeccable taste, Rich. Those pages are beautiful.
Thanks for posting them.
Now send me one.
Don't you socialists believe in re-distributing the wealth? wynk
Note to Rich: This is meant as a joke. I have no desire to hijack this Heritage thread and 'fundamentally transform' it into another rambling and inane political thread.
Just walk away. There's nothing to see here. wynk
Except, of course, this other super-fine offering from HA:

Well, just a couple of days left. Almost a third of my watched lots have reached there low end estimate. No huge early bidding wars. I still would rather flip through the catalog instead of looking at them online. Maybe I should ask Grey to send an extra copy of the catalog, so I can have a clean copy.

Anybody surprised by the early action as the internet bidding is ending?

Pretty cool story about this "Anatomy of a Murder" silkscreen poster:
Anatomy of a Murder (Art Krebs Screen Studio, 1984). Saul Bass Silk-Screen Poster (25.25" X 35.5"): This is the original concept Saul Bass painted for the film, before it was altered. The studio diluted his completely blood red background down to an orange top and enlarged actor credits on the bottom. His original idea would only be used by the Italians, who perhaps understood the passion of blood red and its importance to the central plot of the film.. In frustration, Bass would often go to one of the best print studios in Los Angeles, the Art Krebs Screen Studio, just around the corner from his studio, and privately print his original designs in editions of only 100-400 intended as gifts for friends, the Museum of Modern Art, and exhibitions around the world. This silkscreen was done in 1984 in an edition of 300, per a listing from the seller of the remaining few copies who had been engaged by the Bass estate. There are some mild horizontal creases in the bottom credits and mild edge wear. What a completely unique and grand companion piece this would be, displayed with the American one sheet. Rolled, Fine/Very Fine. Estimate: $1,400 - $2,400.
This is the final poster that was used:

If there are 300 of them, what would make it "completely unique"?

I am not having much luck in this sig. auction, I keep getting blown by everytime I bid on something. Se how the live goes today I guess.

Anybody else see that Greta Garbo go for $40,000, four times the high estimate? I've been watching sporadically.
-
I look forward to hearing what some of the veterans thought of the pricing. King Kong and Wolfman stuff seemed to be going either below the estimate or at the low end. The mummy stuff seemed to have to some strong bidders.
Crowzilla- you out there. I know you play in the deep end of the pool. ;D

That's a terrific "Terror from the Year 5000" Ian. And a pretty good price to boot.
Albert Kallis is the artist. Monster Brains has an excellent showcase of his art with an article about him. (http://monsterbrains.blogspot.com/2011/08/amazing-poster-art-of-albert-kallis.html) He also did Invasion of the Saucer Men, The Astounding She Monster, etc.

I have never been into collecting posters from any particular artists. But Mel, every poster you attributed to Mr. Kallis are among my favorites. I had no idea that the same person designed them all. Thanks for the great article.

I give up. I'll have to go up there next time with cash in hand. My wife would castrate me if I bought anything at this point. Everything I was tracking zoomed past my number. The To Catch a Thief went for $1,553 w/BP. The insert went fairly cheap IMO at $550 though...

Hey Charlie, HA has a 40x60 To Catch a Thief up for post auction buy. It has a "make an offer" button, if you want to toss in a low bid.

Brian, did you really get that HP lenticular?
The Catch A Thief is a tough choice, the 40x60 has slightly inferior art but significantly larger size. Here they are proportionately sized. Putting a big box over most of Grace Kelly's hair is a tragedy, of course....

Actually Mel you bring up a very good point. Maybe not getting this one is a sign from the poster gods to hold out for the half sheets or six sheet without boxes over Grace's head:

Thanks for posting the Monster Brains page about Kallis, Mel.
He was a great talent who produced many of the most memorable sci-fi posters of the 50s.
This is my favorite poster on the page, which also sold last night.
Anybody here win it?
But, I'm not so sure Kallis did this art.
Even though it was a Corman film, the composition doesn't quite look like Kallis.
Additionally, MONSTER BRAINS incorrectly attributed THE GIANT BEHEMOTH to Kallis.
See GSW's comment on the page. He is correct. Joe Smith painted the BEHEMOTH.
Can anyone out there confirm that this is Kallis art?

Picked up Godzilla vs. The Thing, my first Godzilla non-re-release poster:
Godzilla vs. the Thing (American International, 1964). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Ishiro Honda directs this fourth installment of the ever popular Godzilla series of films. The monster is back to once again, this time taking on Mothra. Akira Takarada, Yuriko Hoshi and Hiroshi Koizumi star. Fabulous Reynold Brown artwork of Godzilla wreaking havoc on the armies of the world.

Nice one, Mel. Godzilla is a slippery slope like SW or James Bond. I thought about having a wall of Godzilla stuff. But hell, I thought about having a wall of just about everything. ;D

Well, the Godzilla collection will have to wait until next year. The budget for the rest of year is looking scary. I've gotta pay for a vacation in England, traveling home for Thanksgiving, Christmas presents, dating, and unexpected expensive car repairs. I'm like the Titanic with four compartments flooded!

I think that buyer would have configured in his heritage settings to accept offers on his poster purchases
