My drawers are almost full. So before I expand, I thought it'd be interesting to see everyone's set up. Collecting is fun, but it takes room.
My print drawer, officially full:
The rest of the folded stuff is crowded too - the rolled posters are in the next room (picture later).

I like how the drawers are flush with the wall, i would like to do this but my next door neighbours might not be too impressed
-
Cool set up T....and great thread idea.
Im still new and looking for ideas for ways to store my crap.
-
The thing is, I am very, VERY organized. There is one poster on the wall inside my house, the same one for the past 6 months (French War of the Worlds), the rest is in the garage perfectly organized. I can find anything I want within a minute or two. Since the file cabinet is inside the wall, people see it without seeing it and don't even acknowledge it. Coming here, you would never know that I own posters.

It is shocking to me that you don't display more of that beautiful eye candy. You could probably fit a hundred or so posters on your walls, which would leave enough room in your file cabinets for maybe an entire month or two of new purchases. 8)
Here is my humble file cabinet and I have a few rolled in the utility closet that wouldn't fit in the flat file and/or I didn't want to contaminate the ones in the flat file.

How to NOT store your posters.
If it is in here and in my collection, I can find it:
If in my collection and here, forget about it (I have 3 other shelves like this):
If for sale, I can find it, store in boxes, have these shelves all over the place.

Like my parents said, do as I say, not as I do ;D

What a nightmare, Dale, I don't know how you do it. I'd go crazy within 5 minutes.

What a nightmare, Dale, I don't know how you do it. I'd go crazy within 5 minutes.
Pretty amazing actually considering how quickly and well he ships stuff.
-
Oh..Er...Dale's looks more organised than mine. I could spend days looking for a certain poster. The only things organised in my collection are my Film Magazine's, Lobby's, Stills, and Autographs to an extent. Even my Dvd's and 16mm films are all over. I think size of House and space must make a difference. Though I have been in this house for 18 months, I am no where near organised.
-
I'm glad to see the all important tool of the poster collector in Dale's.. The Tape measure, mine is always at hand. ;D

Pic. Please! ;) 8)

Its gotta be Ritz..and if you like a cheeky cab sauv...chilean is the way to go...casillero del diablo cabernet sauvignon is the best..

Wine and cheese will ALWAYS take over posters.
ALWAYS!
-
Monkey business has finished, Duck Soup now playing, only had Jacob's and hovis crackers, jolly nice though. I do prefer Australian Wine's ( Sorry T ) linderman's, Wolf blass, or Californian reds. I do have a mixture of Merlot, Cab Sav, Shiraz, Or what ever's on offer. :D
Should this be in the Drink Thread...

Okay, back to my freakin' thread. I want to see your setups.

I'm too embarassed to show mine... piles of tubes all over (some unopened), stacks of posters, books on some to flatten folds, old boxes from Sue's frames full of flat posters under the bed... it's a disaster at the moment. I'm about the pull the trigger on a nice flat file so I'm hoping to catalog and photograph everything as it goes in.
Does anyone know of a good digital solution of keep track of posters and photos? Excel sucks, but I would like something like that to store the photos, poster name, year, director, condition, price paid, etc.... Ideally a future website would be able to access it for displaying, sorting, searching, etc....
-
Come on Harry, I'm posting mine tomorrow. It will be most embarrassing, but what the heck.
-
Please...if anyone is "up there"..dont let me get to the stage where i have to choose between my sofa or my posters...please... :D

Thierry, do you have your prints/posters in sleeves?
Ferris looks like its in a sleeve...mylar, perhaps?
Semi on topic: do you (or anyone) feel the need to use backing boards with mylar/poly sleeves?
-
The Sleeves I use Have a backing board as standard. It maybe possible to see in this pic.
-
No sleeves. Ferris came with one last night, and since it's the last one in the drawer, I left it. Otherwise, no, no need.
T
-
The stuff I sell is actually very organized and easy to find. My keeper collection, I have 95% inventoried and know what I have, I just dont know where I have it, if not in the flat file!

That's how one loses a Stout Big Trouble in Little China.

Do you not use mylar or poly sleeves because you live in a low humidity area? All the posters in my flat file are in poly sleeves because I figured it would be better living in an area with high humidity and it seems to give me some sense that they will be more safe, am I correct assuming that?

;D exactly, there are only so many places a tube can hide around here!

I don't know. Maybe. I know I don't need them here. But if I were to live in Miami, the story might be different. My flat posters don't need it for sure. My rolled posters are in rolls of 50. Each roll is in a poly bag (or whatever it's called) just in case of a flood, because the back of a garage can be more prone to humidity than other places, but mainly so that they don't touch the cardboard tube. Humidity is really not a factor in Southern Cal.

Good idea on keeping the rolled ones in poly bags, for the reasons you stated. I should probably find a few for the few posters I have that are in cardboard tubes that need to be linen backed and framed. You guys in California are lucky that you don't have to worry about the humidity.

Yeah, and we also have the Lakers.

A couple of pics of the un-organised collection at Waines Manor...
If it was only posters I think I would be O.K. Unfortunately I have several thousand Film Magazines of mostly Horror films, about 1500 books, amongst the other stuff.
This is the linen closet, one side full of Mags.
This is the small back bed room, which is my main poster room, both flat file's full and all draws full.

This room is going to be my home cinema, when I can get it finished. At the moment a bit of a store room

The study is finished, but no where near enough space for all the books.

And the loft is full to bursting.

reporting on shadowing Firefly]
Chicolini: Monday we watch-a Firefly's house, but he no come he wasn't home. Tuesday we go to the ball game, but he fool us: he no show up. Wednesday HE go to the ball game, but we fool him, WE no show up. Thursday it was a double-header, nobody show up. Friday it rained all day, there was no ball game, so we stayed home, we listen to it over the radio.

How do you open the drawers of the back cabinet?
-
Carefully... ;)
They do actually open 3/4 of the way out, but you have to stand at the side of it. I am hoping not to have the bookcase's in there when we eventually get the house finished. So there will be much more room.
-
Paul you had me hopes up for a much greater disaster. Considering the amount of stuff that isnt that bad at all. Though I do see what you mean about having to find and dig something out.
-
You should see the Loft..
-
When you are a massive poster hoarder, you need to buy your flat files in 3 or 4 stacks instead of the single or doubles. Go about 5' or 6' high, I am on the hunt for another, put the word in at the local office salvage, see how long it takes for them to come up with one, maybe by then I can figure out where to put it! The last one I got in the pictures was only 375 or so delivered/setup. I want the 2" drawers this time though, the 1" you just cant get enough in a drawer.
-
Let's see the Loft.
And others... don't be shy... show us your goodies.

Outstanding Paul ;D god you are so organised..my attic is shameful compared to this..
Thanks for the photos!

Was looking for an Elmo box...must be hidden in the garage..can you check??

A work table with a bunch of rolls of one sheets, quads, HSs, inserts, etc...

Another work area with stacks of foldeds....
Here are a bunch of boxes of rolled posters in tubes that I still haven't opened since we moved almost 2 years ago now. Notice the crazy box in the middle with a large tube in it... that is a Bonnie and Clyde French 1-panel on linen.
And here is a peak inside the wardrobe box filled with tubes and a few flat packed posters... The one in the upper left is my R51 French 1-panel for Beauty and the Beast!

SPARE BEDROOM
This bedroom is turning into a nursery so I'm going to have to get these out of here eventually. For now it is an old box from one of Sue's frames that has been converted to flat storage. I have a piece of acid free foam core on the top and bottom, with a bunch of books on top to help flatten folds.
I just flipped through for the first time in a while and there are some nice posters in there....

Dance of the Vampires quad (cough) See Paul! ;D (cough)

Its getting better the deeper I go...

And my prize near the bottom... a matte finish NM Goldfinger 1-sheet

DOWNSTAIRS
But wait, there is more.... this work room downstairs was supposed to house the majority of our books (from two academics) and a nice big work table to spread out on. However, my posters have slowly invaded this space too... Here are some recent acquisitions (including my Big Lebowski, From Dusk Till Dawn, some bond quads and my yellow White Zombie silkscreen on linen.
Back in the corner you see unopened tubes of Alamo Star Wars prints, empty tubes for shipping and even on the top of the bookshelves I have another growing stack of folded posters. I swear this is a like a disease...
-
I love the sneek peeks in these posts..Example..Here is my new Sex and the city poster that just happens to be lying next to an original Metropolis quad..if i had any gems to display i would do the same.. ;D
Thanks to all who have posted..wonderfull laugh1

Do you know I never thought of taking pic's of some of the posters on the way, I was too busy looking at box's and draws. hitself
Real nice Harry, you have some jollyfine stuff looking at it.

Harry, get your totem out now!!!!
After analysing the two photos above and having only just watched inception I'm seriously worried your being targeted my specialist film poster extractors 8) Notice the weird gravity in your spare bedroom, books and posters stuck to your walls... ahhh, have you been experiencing weird weather lately?
Quality collection! ;D
-
Really enjoyed the pictures and informative walk through...very fun. Thanks, Harry C!
I should have taken pics of my similar set up (various rooms) before I started getting more organized, it was getting comical. (Well to me, not to my wife).
Now I am fusing all my stuff to just one poster closet instead of three, and putting several things in a flat file that was sitting in my garage for over a year. I just have to attach the steel legs it came with, which are pretty cool, not to mention helpful. Will post pics later on.
-
I have a few flat files, but after you get tens of thousands of posters, you need something more substantial.
So I built my own:
I also have a few tubes stacked on top of the shelves.

Bruce, that is cool. Is that set up for your personal stuff, or for temporary holding purposes for eMovie?

Agree...that is cool!....Im thinking emovie ??
-
Definitely eMoviePoster!
Sometimes people drive up with truckloads of posters, and we need to be able to handle ANY quantity.
One guy came with 50,000 posters and he said, "That will keep you going for many years" and I said, "Since we auction 100,000 items a year, that's only 6 months worth" and he was surprised!
Bruce

Great to see the photos, Bruce. What about folded posters eg 6-sheets?

I wouln`t mind having those in my house...

I'll take some more pictures that show other storage areas.
Bruce

Are you saying that the posters we bought from you over the years have been in there at some point?
-
I was wondering the same thing. Is that place climate controlled? Do you have acid free mulberry paper at the bottom of each drawer?
More importantly, where is Angie?
-
Some of my rolled posters, by year, in tubes of 50...

I have been organizing my posters by style/size in my flat file. For example I have a drawer of folded one sheets and separate drawers for rolled one sheets and quads. I know Thierry keeps rolled posters rolled but does anyone else store everything flat?
Also, we are getting ready to put the house on the market and the real estate agent recommended I take all my framed stuff down. I want to keep them in the frames does it matter if I stack them flat on top of each other or is it better to lean them vertically somewhere?
-
I cannot believe how organised T is... it must take some of the mystery out of life. I love having a mooch and finding something I forgot I had. ;D
Storage-wise, I try to keep as much stuff as possible stored flat. With regards to the framed posters, I would definitely store them vertical. They can damage each other too easily staked.
Just moved (well 18 months ago ) myself, some people have no taste when it come's to what's on your wall's. Mind I had Blood from Dracula's Castle, King kong vs Godzilla, and Frankenstein and the Monster from hell up. :)

Haha! You are my kind of guy Paul! My collection is primarily horror, I cannot fault the real estate agent for his advice considering what I had up.
Thanks for the advice, vertical it is.
-
How do you upload images that aren't somewhere else?
I only know how to upload images that I have uploaded to my website.
Anyway, T - that is one heck of a set-up you have, never mind organisation.
You know the lobby card sets you pictured? What are they in, and what are they stored in?
Best,
Adam
-
So they actually just put in the carpet today; but until I saw T's stuff I thought I was taking it a bit overboard. I had a wall adjacent to my garage having a 3' raised ledge so I knocked down the wall repositioned the studs and built a custom movie poster closet that extended into the garage out of oak with black water based stain and acrylic top coat; finished off the wall in bead board pine with a rosewood finish. Added some recessed lighting for some of my favorite items. The shelves are all adjustable; I need to build about 4 or 5 more for the one sheets (flat). The 1st slimmer shelving unit will be used for folded posters; I refuse to collect lobbies or photos.... but who knows. The remaining 4 slimmer cases is for my massive vinyl collection and maybe some books... It took me 4 months and an electricity how to book but it is done... I was thinking about adding a door to the one sheet unit to keep out light and actually be able to lock it up; thoughts?

That is a pretty cabinet. No idea on current exchange rates, but beyond my cheapskate means.
-
I am very curious and I am asking anyone who wishes to answer. In the area(s) where you store your posters, is it climate controlled as in has air conditioning and heating?
Thanks
~ Juli
-
Yes but only because my basement was already climate controlled. Of course I'm not a person who worries to much about my poster. They are in a flat file laying right on top of each other no separation. I love my poster and hope nothing happens to them but any money spent on extra protection is less money spent on posters.
-
It is shocking to me that you don't display more of that beautiful eye candy.
Sharp looking cabinet there, Brandon. cool1
In the years since, has this flat file gained a mate? Or is there still some room left in this one?
-
Thanks. Yeah, I liked the style. It was nice having the recessed handles, and the drawers had kind of a pocket in the last 10 inches or so which prevented stuff from getting pushed over the top of the back of the drawers.
I actually moved into a place with about half the square footage. A lot of stuff had to go, that cabinet included. It would have cost more to keep in storage than to just buy another, even a brand new one, after a few years.
It's part of the reason I cut down on my humble collection/collecting. Now I can relate to a lot of Japanese folks, who prefer the B2 and chirashi compared to B1 and larger fornats, due to limited space.
-
Sorry to hear that it had to go. But I understand, if space was an issue. Did a fellow poster collector get it from you?
In any case, it was a sharp looking setup.
How much of your collection have you trimmed away?
-

It went to a woman who does paintings.
Probably about half.
Flat file cabinets are definitely the way to go. They're the best, for various reasons, especially sorting through everything, and when showing visitors the collection, it's like being like a museum curator. 8)
