Title: Question about the stamp across the bottom of the movie poster of "Them" (1954)
Post by: alvin68 on February 03, 2017, 07:55:55 AM
I hope it's the right section to open this topic, but if I'm wrong I apologize.

Maybe many of you already know the great movie "Them", a true cult classic sci-fi of the 50s directed by Gordon Douglas.
I have a question about the movie poster, in particular about some sort of stamp or logomark which is in the lower right of the sheet, near the NSS number (National Screen Service).

Someone can tell me what kind of mark is it and what exactly is it written?

I show below the poster and then the enlarged detail (note the part that I have indicated with the purple arrow).

THE UNKNOWN "LOGOMARK"

It would be fantastic if some collector of the forum who owns the poster in large format, could get a high-resolution scan image just of this detail, so you can view and recognize the logomark in a clear way.

Very grateful if can you help me.  prayer.gif

By any chance, would you have a copy of this missing that corner, and you want the restorer to be able to recreate that logo?

Yes, in truth, I myself do "digital" restoration work, and in this case I'm restoring the poster in question. The result is excellent, I only have to recover this little part.

Is it a printing company union bug?

Hi Simes, maybe you're right, it could be. But you should find exactly the union bug used in this case.
Do you have any idea?

Here the typical scheme:

Thank you!

EDIT
This is very close:

Digital restoration, eh?....  And in a few weeks, will there be numerous minty white Them one sheets on eBay and elsewhere, with extra crisp Union logos?  thumbsup.gif    I kid I kid.

Welcome aboard, A68.

No... no business here... it's for my personal collection.

Few weeks? uhno Are months of meticulous work!

Anyway, I still hope there's someone has the poster that can give the union bug matching infos.

UPDATE

With graphics filters, I have tried to zoom and highlight the union bug of the "Them" poster.

As a result, the image:

Below, instead, is an image of union bug used in the 50s which I think is the same.

According to my interpretation, I made an example for the content text, but I cannot read the text in the underneath part.

Are any of you able to understand what might be written (the union area) in the empty part indicated by the red arrow?

Thank you.

That looks to read NEW YORK in the bottom part of the bug.

It reads even more clear in the filtered bug you created from the actual Them poster, too.

And what is printed below that area on the actual Them bug? (below the bottom curve of the bug in the center). Is that more text?

Yes! Now that you mention it, I think it's New York.
Bravo, Jeff!  cool1

Yes, there is certainly other text, very very small, but impossible to decipher...  :-\

We need to find someone who owns an actual copy and a  Spying.gif to get that info.

I found in the web the original format of this poster only as One Sheet sizes (27" X 41"). These sizes are inches or centimeters?
Because,  if it's centimeters, then you will not be able to understand it in any way.
But maybe I'm wrong...

They come in handy when quoting someone, too.  notworthy.gif

Subtle distinction I didn't know. Thanks for the contribution.   :)

Were you ever able to decipher or make out that very small text below the union bug? Or is it still a mystery?

In the mean time I found this interesting website discussing the union logo/bug and this actual image of the NY bug that first appeared (or was registered using this design), in 1945.

No, Jeff. I have supposed that could be written "trademark".
But I think that only those who own the original larger poster can know it.

Yes, thank you. I too had found both the image and that discussion.  ;)

Waiting for other confirmations, I recreated the union bug, and I attach the image as it appears in my restored poster, as well as an enlargement of it (my source file that I made is in vector format).
