Would like to do a book thread. Please post or describe your absolute quintessential movie poster books; two or three movie poster books you enjoy most and would kindly recommend. Thanks!
-
I think Sam Sarowitz's Translating Hollywood and Art of the Modern Movie Poster are destined to become the "Reel Art" books for collectors of modern posters. But damned if this isn't a tough question. I presently have nearly 50 books on various aspects of poster collecting and movie art and I really like each one for what it is. It's hard to single out just a few. But Sam's books deserve to be singled out because I think he's the only guy so far to really set out to establish modern posters as collector-worthy.
-
Definitely. It was Sam's book that inspired the question. Translating Hollywood is exceptional. As is most everything he puts together really. I was able to see one of their exhibits last summer in NY. One other I'd suggest for Bardot fans Brigitte Bardot a l'affiche .

Hi, Folks!
Have to register a vote here for Sim Branaghan's BRITISH FILM POSTERS publication ...
... available from Amazon - or from Quadbod in person at various events in the UK
-
Borst's "Graven Images" will keep you collecting forever.
Any of the Stan Choko books on french posters, I'm particularly fond of "100 ans d affiches de cinema".
"Film Posters of the Russian Avant Garde" by Susan Pack is truly mouthwatering for those with an interest in such things.
Oh, gotta throw in Gresham's "Children of the Night," while not up to "GI", it's an invalualbe resources for UniHo material.

thanks peter :)

Roll on 26th of October I say, as this book is released.
-
That should be a fantastic book.
Although Sim Branaghan's book is a good historical look at the quad and has several images, I am hoping someone someday puts together more of a pictoral quad book. Something like what Nourmand put together for the decades series.
-
Anyone remotely interested in all things James Bond paper, well this book is an absolute must. I would even argue its worth a purchase for people who enjoy posters in general as it is jammed with incredible pics and detailed info about the history of the Bond posters. Such a fantastic book, I refer to it all the time.

It can be had for around $15 used on Amazon, which is a great deal considering it usually goes for over $40.

Just got it for $.99 on Ebay yesterday!
Also the Star Wars Poster book is terrific for Star Wars collectors.
The Art of Modern Movie Posters is great, although I've only viewed it at the library.

These are the essentials for me:
Art of Noir (gets the capital "E"ssential!)

Hi, Dave!
In fairness to Sim - and just in case the thought of 'several images' might put-off a prospective purchaser - there are actually over 300 colour images in BRITISH FILM POSTERS.
Best wishes,
Terry - www.quadbod.co.uk (http://www.quadbod.co.uk)

Sim's book is brilliant.
-
Anybody have a link to the 40x60 book that is coming out, I cant even remember who was making it.

Here are a couple from my Japanese collection. Each is from a different era -- first being SF posters from 1949-1964, the 2nd being from 1965-1975.
The earlier one has a special section of Hitchcock titles, the other has a special section of Bond posters. Nice big pictures of the posters.

I also consult the Choko 100 ans d'affiches de cinema quite often these days.

Emily King's books are very good.
Also Frangioni's Clint Eastwood: Icon is great, but very incomplete.
-
I have a huge back catalogue of the Christies Auction catalogues I picked up a while ago. They are great, but lots of repetition
The other must haves are the james Bond poster book, Movie posters by Emily King, The Star Wars poster book.
Dare i say movie posters of the 50's 60's 70's 80' 90's are not bad if you can get them cheap enough. maybe there is a new one due Movie posters of the 00's?

I wonder if anyone can suggest a book about the history of film posters, printing, lithographers etc?
I have the LAMP book which is OK and I tend to look out in the internet for info but I wonder if there is any book out there that you could recommend?
-
Thanks for posting that book Mel. Does anybody know how often those panels come up for auction?

This thread is a grim reminder of how far behind I've gotten in my reading.
Great posts all.

Just got the kirk Hammett book in the mail, great stuff of course, great images. Best one is the fresh faced teenager so proud of his collection.
-
Will have to check that book out...!
does anyone know any good ones about the " making of the posters " I have the LAMP but it tells you little about printing process , history of posters of the 20-50s.
Some of my posters look like painted " coloured" photos.

You mean tinted, black and white photos, Rosa? Giving some skin tones to faces and blush to the cheeks of women?
It's a great look, and gives more eye appeal to the b/w images, IMO, too. :)

Yes, I mean that. I am trying to learn more about the posters and how they were printed say, between late 40s and late 50s. I know most posters in the 50s look like colored photographs, but they are not like digital photos, and jut try to understand what I am supposed to be looking at when i see a poster from the late 40s to 60s..
i cannot find anything. I bought a couple of books about photography, etc. ZZZzz ZzzZ

Seven Questions for Bill Gold, Master of the Movie Poster
By Stephanie Murg on February 25, 2013 6:20 AM
If the Academy doled out little golden men in the category of Best Movie Poster, Bill Gold would have hundreds. The legendary graphic designer (and Pratt Institute alum), who turned 92 last month, created posters for films ranging from Yankee Doodle Dandy (1941) to J. Edgar (2011), which he came out of retirement to design at the request of his old friend Clint Eastwood. The posters for Casablanca, A Clockwork Orange, Alien, The Exorcist? All pure Gold. He recently did his part to celebrate the achievements of another notable nonagenarian: Warner Bros. As part of a 90th anniversary celebration that will span all of 2013, the studio invited Gold to create a poster of posters. You can find it, along with art cards featuring his movie poster designs, in two new megacollections of Warner Bros. films: 100 films on DVD and 50 films on Blu-ray. Gold recently made time between Oscar screeners (he’s a member of the Academy and has watched some sixty films since November) to discuss posters past and present, and some highlights of his seven-decade career.
1. One of your first assignments at Warner Bros. was designing the poster for Casablanca. How did you approach this project, and what did you seek to create/convey with the poster?
I approached this project like I would any other. I was a young art director that was given an assignment. This was one of my first posters. My initial thoughts were to put together a montage showing all the characters depicted in the film. They appeared to be an interesting ensemble of notable characters.
Something was missing, however. And I was asked to add some more ‘excitement’ to the scene. I added the gun in Bogart’s hand, and the poster suddenly came alive with intrigue.
2. If you had to choose a poster of which you are most proud, what would it be?
The Unforgiven teaser poster. Because of the simplicity of the. The setting was appropriately dark, and the image of the gun more than provocative. It wasn’t the typical image that you’d see on a poster.
3. Of the more than 2,000 posters you’ve worked on, which one would you describe as the most challenging to design?
Bird was one of the most challenging posters I worked on–mainly because I was told not to depict it as a “jazz” movie, but rather to emphasize the more human aspects of the life of a musician. The studio was trying to promote the film as more of a ‘family’ movie. So I worked on several comps of Charlie Parker and his wife, along with his kids. But I still felt the story was primarily about this wonderful jazz musician; so I did one comp of him alone playing his sax and we dramatized how he played his whole life in a very dramatic way. As soon as Clint [Eastwood] saw it, he said, “That’s the one!” It went on to win several awards, and is also one of my favorites.
4. What do you think are the ingredients of a successful/memorable movie poster?
The objective is to “sell” the film, to entice an audience to see it through a revealing and striking image and typography. To provoke an interest in the “story” of the film is what I am able to do best.
5. What was the last movie poster (excluding those designed by yourself) you saw that you loved?
There have been several, but the majority of today’s posters seem to have an unexciting design. They just plop a head on top of another and do lots of Photoshop. I’m not fond of that. That’s not the Bill Gold look.
6. What has been your best or most memorable professional encounter?
Working and getting to know Clint Eastwood. Clint and I have become very good friends over the years. I have the highest regard for him. Professionally, he is as good as it gets. He appreciates everything I have done for him, and has wonderful taste and a remarkable eye for art. Of course, there have been a couple of times when he has asked me to “go back to the drawing board” and investigate another direction. But this is part of the working process, and most of the time we are both on the same page.
7. What has been your proudest design moment?
My most recent assignment. I was asked by Warner Home Video to design a poster for WB’s 90th anniversary. All they asked was for me to design a poster with 100 of the designs I created for Warners over the past seven decades! What a dream assignment. It wasn’t easy to pick only 100, but I did and I’m very, very proud of the poster.

Nice interview, Rosa.

Good thread! Thanks to those that have posted, I've added a handful to my Amazon wishlist. I'll try and add a few of my faves...sorry for the bad photos!
Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design

This is a beautiful big hardcover that appears to be really comprehensive. It has lots of images, but interesting and informative text too. Film posters, corporate work like logos and my fave sections on the title designs he worked on. I got it for Christmas and I keep dipping in, but have hardly made a dent as it contains so much. Very much recommended if you like his work.

I got mine in yesterday... It made me want to be a graphic designer. This guy is so cool and beyond just movie posters. I mean some of his logo/trademark work is beyond belief. Every exxon gas station I see now, I am thinking Saul Bass did that...
Thanks for the recommendation - a great spending of my wife's Discover card points... ;D

The Bass book is incredible -- as it includes some great stuff about the woman behind the man, Elaine Bass.
Also, here's another plug for Dave Kehr's MoMA classic, Italian Film Posters, which is heavy on the Ballesters...

Bogie is a pretty good read.
What is Lost Artwork of Hollywood about? More so the films, stills/photography or posters?
-
I own the Bogie book and I thought it was pretty good as well.

Are the Bogie, Jaws, and Dr No books, poster books? Or more books that cover (or are retrospectives) of their specific topics?
All look to be interesting reads tho.

Lost Art of Hollywood, not too great, although plenty of pics of trade ads, no published posters; of course, that's what the book is about - rediscovering the lost and obscure art and identifying the artists

I have that particular James Bond book as well as a couple other Bond books. I thought the content was pretty good and the quality of the way it was made was excellent.

Sorry Mel, I have to completely disagree with this and no, it's not because it is you - it could be anyone so please don't take this personally.
It has been discussed previously - the best Bond poster book in many people's opinion (well, at least all those collectors I have spoken with about it) is still Nixdorf's from 1997. Despite it being in German, it is brilliant and well worth the buy. I guarantee you will change your mind if you can get hold of a copy.

Good thread! Thanks to those that have posted, I've added a handful to my Amazon wishlist. I'll try and add a few of my faves...sorry for the bad photos!
Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saul-Bass-Life-Film-Design/dp/1856697525/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1362696203&sr=1-1

If anyone had any doubt that posting something here would either drive up the price or increase the competition (or both)... see above!
-
It was a BIN.. so the price was set. No way for it to be "driven up" in this case. (Or I wouldn't have posted it, otherwise).
And the Point is.. hopefully a fellow APF'r snagged it.

I have really enjoyed this book about the development of color lithography in the US. There is very little printed that I am aware of on movie poster printing, this is a very pretty book concerning stone and zinc plate lithography and the origins of what would become the movie poster printing business.

Thanks for the heads up Dale. My local B&N didn't have it, but the one by the theater where I caught Birdman had a stack of them for $19.99.
With shipping the online is closer to $40 and those are used, so this is a pretty sweet deal...

If you click on the result that comes up via your search and then click the Hardcover format link at the bottom it brings up the cheaper option too. Might need to search Bargain Books specifically to find the other one??

Yeah, they do everything that they can to hide it. I hope that this is the last B&N gift card that I get from anyone. Why bother when everything is easier and, usually, cheaper on Amazon...

From Thomas Hodge, aka The Dude Designs, a rad looking book VHS Video Cover Art is scheduled to be released May 28, 2015. cool1
http://www.amazon.com/VHS-Video-Cover-Art-1980s/dp/0764348671 (http://www.amazon.com/VHS-Video-Cover-Art-1980s/dp/0764348671)
"Video cover art is a unique and largely lost artform representing a period of unabashed creativity during the video rental boom of the 1980s to early 1990s. The art explodes with a succulent, indulgent blend of design, illustration, typography, and hilarious copywriting. Written and curated by Tom “The Dude Designs” Hodge, poster artist extraordinaire and VHS obsessive, with a foreword by Mondo’s Juston Ishmael, this collection contains over 240 full-scale, complete video sleeves in the genres of action, comedy, horror, kids, sci-fi, and thriller films. It’s a world of mustached, muscled men, buxom beauties, big explosions, phallic guns, and nightmare-inducing monsters. From the sublime to the ridiculous, some are incredible works of art, some are insane, and some capture the tone of the films better than the films themselves. All are amazing and inspiring works of art that captivate the imagination. It’s like stepping back in time into your local video store!"

That FDtR poster is credited to the Netherlands Film Museum, fwiw. Seems a weird country to be censoring posters but maybe they got it from Ireland or something.
I rue the day that book entered my liberry. It's what set the hook on this accurs-ed hobby.

I picked up this book from the local Barnes and Noble yesterday. I was shocked by how big this book is. It's about a foot in width and height and weighs almost 8 pounds. I also didn't realize that Sam Sarowitz of Posteritati is the main author.
It's a great book and a great deal at $20.

It's a beautifully done book, too, Chris. I'm not sure what the first printing print was either, but i believe it may have also been put out, a while later, in paperback, tho not 100% sure about that.
I learned about it, maybe 8 years ago, when the author had some material on ebay that he was selling. I ended up acquiring a Chaney pre-war Belgian from them (in a round about way) and during that exchange, he told me about this book that he and his wife had written and compiled.

Obviously it's mainly about the poster imagery but is the text in English as well?

It is in both French and English...the chapter intro pages as well as the poster descriptions and titles themselves (next to, or below each image).

No problem, Jeff.
When you think about it, it's kinda incredible that video stores are a thing of the past. I'm sure that a lot of people miss the days of going to the local mom and pop video store, Blockbuster, etc., and there are surely a lot of people who didn't have that experience and wish that those joints were still around.
This book looks like it has a good compilation of the VHS cover art of various titles, from the classics to the obscure, straight to video release films, many of which had totally rad artwork to sell the films. And combined with what looks like cool commentary, and a high quality book.
Looking forward to receiving it. 8)

Yeah, with Amazon Prime it's pretty amazing. A yearly $50 fee for Prime, and everything is shipped free with 2-day shipping. Of course, so many things can be bought from Amazon for the same or less than anywhere else, and you get it delivered to your doorstep in 2 days.
Pretty stoked to be (hopefully) receiving this book about a week before I was planning on it. 8)

VHS Video Cover Art just arrived. 8)
This book has an awesome collection of high quality images of the front and back of VHS video covers. A lot of these I've never seen and probably never would have seen anywhere other than this book.
Aside from the first few pages containing the foreword, there's not any commentary on the art or movies. I think it's pretty cool that way, as the brief description of the movie on the back of the cover brings you back to those times of the video store days, when you would see a cool looking video or DVD case, and read the back for a little more info., and the descriptions of some of these movies are classic.
The images are not perfect, like MoviePosterDB or something similar, but they are very good quality. They're from actual photos of VHS covers, and they're not in perfect condition, as they show the minor wear and tear from over the years of being rented, in storage, etc.
It's a rad book, and a great deal. Highly recommended.
-
Sounds like another one for the library, Brandon.
Nice!

Winter is good to meet up again with good old movies
Spring just needs music

For the first time Nicolas Winding Refn, writer, producer and director of the PUSHER films, BRONSON, VALHALLA RISING, DRIVE, ONLY GOD FORGIVES and THE NEON DEMON, trawls through his unique collection of rare American film posters to unfold ways the viewer validates and actualises the presentation of key images into their own personal reality.
From the vintage visuals of SPIKED HEELS AND BLACK NYLONS, OBSCENE HOUSE and ALICE IN ACIDLAND to THE TWISTED SEX, TORTURE ME KISS ME and ZERO IN AND SCREAM – to name just a few of the tantalizing film titles showcased – the controversial Danish icon constructs a whole new way of looking at the key artwork and shameless hyperbole thought up in the back alley gutters of the exploitation industry.
Now the celebrated filmmaker makes complicit voyeurs of us all by editing his exceptional collection of little-seen and vivid front-of-house displays into an extraordinary creation to match the observation sensations explored in his own pioneering screen work.
Comprehensive historical context is provided by author Alan Jones for each poster, and every production detail has been meticulously overseen by Winding Refn himself - this book encapsulates everything he knows about eyewitness confrontation on a heart-felt journey into the art and act of seeing.
With a cover art concept by Jay Shaw of renowned contemporary movie poster design company Mondo, this lavish quarter bound volume has unprecedented production values including a cloth bound gold embossed slipcase.
Weighing it at just under 4KG (approximately 8 pounds), and measuring 345mm x 315mm (approximately 14 inches x 12 inches) including the slipcase, we have had to source custom made mailing boxes to handle its dispatch. This is by far the most imposing book ever published by FAB Press.
Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing is the first book from the new NWR imprint of FAB Press, a collaboration with cinema’s most exciting contemporary talent, Nicolas Winding Refn. It is Nicolas’s wish to produce books that focus on iconic rebels in the entertainment industry, presenting to the world high-end art books of the finest possible quality.
https://www.fabpress.com/books/nwr-act-of-seeing.html
I'll probably pick it up some day for half the price, can't splash out £50 at the moment, looks very interesting and well made though. Refn is a fantastic director too.

At the sleazier end of the spectrum, Britain's FAB Press has recently published a second volume of Graphic Thrills, a collection of grindhouse era American XXX movie posters. The paperback is on Amazon but signed hardcover copies are available direct from FAB.

I just placed an order for, Hitchcock Poster Art via Amazon. It was pretty cheap for a hardcover, so I'm not sure how good the quality is going to be, but there seemed to be some positive reviews from both Hitchcock and poster fans. I'll post a few images and a review once it comes in.

Tony Nourmand is a well known in the poster world and has published quite the handful of entertainment and poster/film related books. He is also the founder of the publishing company (Reel Art Press) that put the book out.
Im thinking it will be a nicely done volume.

Thanks for the background info., Jeff. Looking through his Amazon resume, I've come across a number of books before that I wasn't even aware were by the same fella. Quite the body of work he's put together. Hoping to add a few more titles by him that are on my 'want list' soon.
-
His books are almost kinda sales catalogues also (I reckon).
my only claim to fame is selling him a US OS for STARLET that made his sexploitation book :)

You're welcome, Chris.
Hope the book is a thumbs up when you get it and have a chance to go through it.

I have a few from Nourmand including the Hitchcock...it's got a pretty good selection of stuff for each film. I like pretty much all the Nourmand titles.

A quick review on, Hitchcock Poster Art: (http://www.amazon.com/Hitchcock-Poster-Art-Mark-Wolff/dp/1585670928/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458737971&sr=8-1&keywords=hitchcock+poster+art (http://www.amazon.com/Hitchcock-Poster-Art-Mark-Wolff/dp/1585670928/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458737971&sr=8-1&keywords=hitchcock+poster+art)
I picked the hardcover version of this title on Amazon for fairly cheap. When it arrived I took notice that the dust cover was in fairly rough condition, so I was a bit worried initially, but found the inside to be pristine. The pages are of a nice and semi-thick stock, with a matte-ish finish. All of the images really 'pop' and have a nice contrast without being blown out.
Each film title recieves a quick blurb detailing a brief plot synopsis and additional info. The length and breadth of these vary, some are long and thorough with lots of background on the film and production, and some are a few sentences about the plot. I felt the poster content of the book left a little to be desired. For any given title, there are anywhere from 1 to 4 examples of poster artwork from a variety of countries. I was under the impression that this would be a catalog of sorts, with an image of all known artwork for a given title. However, what the book lacks in image completeness it does make up for in thoroughness of titles. Every single Hitchcock film, from the obscure and earliest to which he served as an AD, to the very end receives at least some attention. This is also a very nice section devoted to complete sets of lobby cards for a large number of films as well.
While this book isn't what I had thought it was going to be, I'm still very pleased with my purchase and feel it was money well spent!

Looks rather impressive there, Chris. Nice pics.
You said that the dust jacket was a little rough looking. Did you buy a "used" copy? Or was one advertised as "new" sent in this condition?
-
Thanks, Jeff.
When I purchased the book, I believed I was buying a new copy, but somehow or another I purchased a used copy... most likely a goof on my part. I lucked out though, like I mentioned, everything else was immaculate.

Very good photos and really helpful to have your review. I am a huge fan of books (and poster books!) so do please keep sharing.. ;)
-
Thanks, Rosa! I'm glad you found it helpful.
I'll continue to post as I dive into the world of movie art/poster books.
-
Not strictly a poster book, but definitely related is The Art of Selling Movies by John McElwee. It's mostly newspaper ads for old films, but it's still pretty great to see some of this rare stuff.
Also, I wonder if anyone has had a chance to take a peek at Movie Poster Artists: United States and Canada by Eric and Susan Poole. It's a book on 240 movie poster artists and apparently has over 2700 poster images.
-
Jamie, do you know if the authors are the son and wife of LAMP founder, Ed Poole?
-
Hey Jeff,
I don't know about the authors' exact relation to Ed Poole, but the association with LAMP is spot-on, so you're very likely correct.
-
Im guessing that his son's name is Eric, but do know that his wife's name is Susan. But would seem to make sense that this book is a family affair of the LAMP folks.
I'd love to check their book out. Sounds like it's full of a lot of good info and pics.
-

I just bought it after reading about it. Will let you know what I think when I get it.

I wrote to Ed from LAMP and just got a reply. Here's what he wrote me:
Hi Jeff,
Yes it is by us.... No it is not by someone named Eric. We have a full color edition and a black and white edition. Here they are on Amazon:

Thank you Jamie. I didn't know anything about the Movie Poster Artists book but have ordered one as well. It seems that there are colour and b/w editions.
Mark
-
I got the Poole's book a couple days ago. It is well worth the money in my opinion.

Dale,
did you get the b & w or the pricier color version? If the latter, how's the printing?
-
Color, the picture aspect is not the greatest as the images in general tend to be about business card size, but I think they probably kept in mind the cost as really it is more informational than a coffee table book (at least in my eye).

Graven Images by Ron Borst

Yes, I would agree. I've had my copy a long while but it remains among the best of its kind to this day. Apart from the gobsmacking array of posters printed to a very high quality, the individual contributions (particularly Ray Bradbury and Harlan Ellison) are also great reminders of what cinema-going was like back in the great old days of Hollywood.
-
Been meaning to pick this up, Jeff. Thanks for the reminder. thumbsup.gif

Sure thing, Chris. The book cover art choice alone is worth snagging a copy... notworthy.gif (I think the Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) OS art is superb, and I'd love to own a copy, so I guess I'm a bit biased).
-
Agreed, Jeff. Love the cover and that image in general. The book is actually on it's way to me now.
I ordered it and Too Much Horror Business, Kirk Hammett's book on his horror collection, which I believe includes a impressive poster collection.
On vacation at the moment, so I'm hoping they come in soon to help me kill the time!
-
I dont have Hammett's book yet but from all that has been written about it, in general and here on the forum, I think it's another that will make any fan of horror's mouth water. He's got some true, rare gems in his collection, too.
-
Graven Images came in today, Jeff. I took a gamble on a used copy off of Amazon and lucked out, it's immaculate. Can't wait to dive in.
The Hammet book should be in soon as well, I'll shoot some pics when I get a second. Incidentally a new book of his collection will be out soon in coordination with his exhibit at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Mass. which starts in August. Plan on taking a trip to check it out.
-
Good to hear you got a good copy via Amazon, Chris, as I'm quite sure that the book is long out of print.

An updated version of the 2009 book, "Reynold Brown: A Life in Pictures" by Dan Zimmer will be shipping in September. With an added 80 pages, it looks to be quite nice with many new, added pictures and text.

Interesting, Jeff. I wonder what those 80 additional pages will cover. I already have this book but I might have to double-dip and buy this new copy if the new material is worth it.
-
Thanks for the note on the Brown book, Jeff. Been wanting this for a while, but wasn't ready to fork over the $200+ most are asking for it!

And did Hammett's book arrive yet?

Yeah man, Graven Images is fascinating. The art, chapter forewords, and footnotes are all stellar reading. I've been mega busy, so I haven't gotten too far into it, just finished up the '30s. I really loved Bradbury's into to that chapter. The stories of him and Harryhausen sneaking into the theater to see Kong, him having drinks with Fritz Lang, and how all of those classic horrors inspired him... great stuff.
Hammett's book did arrive as well... what a killer collection. I want to finish Graven Images before I get too far into it, but have flipped through the book and admired all of his stuff, looks like it'll be a less educational/historical/serious discussion of the hobby, but a bit more loose and fun, which is alright with me as well.

I don't own this book, but from all Ive read, both here on the forum, and other reviews, it looks like a must have, for sure.
It's long been on my book list. Especially with some of the rare, Uni stuff he has like his killer The Mummy (1932) 3 sheet. bed1 notworthy.gif

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I recall from Round 1 the Reynold Brown book was rare and out-of-print and selling for several hundred dollars, so $50 for the new one is a bargain....

There are too many "best of decade" books so I just went with one sample.
Added the Choko Bardot, couldn't find the others on Amazon. I'll add one more if you find a source that is actually selling the book.

Mel,
Picked this one up not long ago, and noticed it wasn't on your site (maybe purposefully?). It's on my list to read this summer, but from what I've skimmed it seems to be well written and contains plenty of historical background on the Nazi film industry and the films themselves.
The films, many of which no longer exist, don't interest me a whole lot, but I'm eager to read about their context and that of the posters that represent them.

The best period in German and Austrian cinema, especially the early Third Reich movie. I heard on BBC that a festival in Germany showing the best movies of this period made lot of controversy despite the festival being organised by historians and movie being placed into historical context with a short introduction by organisators and group discussion after movies. I can understand this, problem is that some people are still very much into nationalist views and some are real nazis themselves. The glorifying part and cult of personality is problematic
Even Goebbels admitted that German lost the propaganda war but USA did it bigger and better... while German cinema was going in the late 30s due too much censorship and financial issues, the US propaganda machine was going full speed and take over by army to produce "technical" movies to teach new recruits how to shoot, fight, etc. ; the war bond paid off in the long term.

Very interesting looking book there, Chris.
Certainly an historical look as well as images of film posters done during that period.
Thanks for posting about it.

The surprising thing about the Nazzy era films is how mostly banal they actually are. For those of us brought up on From Caligari to Hitler I think most of us thought German films from this period are rife with goosestepping and master-race baiting. While there is certainly a degree of that - particularly during the war years - it is mostly subtle and rarely blatant and in your face. Notable, appalling exceptions are of course quite apparent.
Thanks to the pirates on YouTube a lot of these films can now be seen and it's quite a surprise that some of them are quite good. They remind me a lot of MGM films of the same period.
Film Posters of the Third Reich is very well done and about as non-controversial as you can get for a book on Shicklgruber's Deutschland. Recommended for those interested in that sort of thing.

Oldposterho, "From Caligari to Hitler" is a fantastic study, I remember reading in grad school and finding it fascinating.

A couple more books, for horror and sci fi fans, both by Jim Gresham. Both books are long out of print but can be found on sites like Amazon or even on ebay now and then.
And Jim is putting out an updated and revised edition of "Children of the Night," which was originally published in 2007. He thinks it will be available in the late Fall. He said it will have many new and updated pics and info. clap clap

I mentioned in my previous post that Jim Gresham's books were available thru ebay and Amazon.. but some of the Amazon sellers are priced crazy high (after looking into it tonight).
I commented, based on recalling copies being available on Amazon from years ago.. but now, some sellers are wanting upwards of $180.00- $778.00 for USED copies of "Children of the Night"[ (2007):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0615198708/ref=tmm_hrd_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=&sr=
And new copies are being offered for between $200.00 - $438.00 faint2.gif

Jim's follow up, sci fi based book, "They're Here Already (2011) is listed (used) for just under $157.00

Not worth crazy prices IMO. The book pics are average quality and the same 3000px, unwatermaked images are available from HA, for free which deserves special credit b/c they are virtually the only dealer/auctioneer not to ruin their images with ginormous, intrusive watermarks, except for a handful of $$$$$ posters like Frankie first releases. (yes, I do publicly thank them (http://moviepostercollectors.guide/Showcases.html) for using their images on MPC.guide.)
-
What things, books or otherwise, can be worth is truly subjective, as we all know. I just wasnt sure why a handful of book sellers have all kind of zeroed in on these high re-sell prices. I guess I'm wondering what the basis for those numbers is.
Ebay might be the better/cheaper 'hunting ground.'

This is 'coming soon' from Taschen - and relatively cheap for:
Hardcover, 14 x 19.5 cm, 600 pages
No idea on the overall quality yet or if just basically a reproduced HA auction picture book but could be worthwhile...

Stopped by Barnes and Noble today and they had this James Bond Poster Book for 50% off, came to a little over $10. Lots of nice poster pics all the way up to Skyfall. Worth a look see if you have a B&N nearby.

I haven't bought a movie poster book in ages, mainly because I like to collect posters, not books on posters, but I was a little curious about the Art of Mondo they just published, so I went for it.
I have to say, it's pretty nice. Some 300+ prints on display, what they consider their best since 2009. They've had quite a run, I must say. I don't always agree, but who am I to talk since I own 94 prints from the book. I see 8 I'd still like to get, but will never own since I'm against buying from resellers.
So if you like prints, I recommend it.
Here are a few pages...

De rigueur book for the 24x36 devotees.
Mondo's newest digital archive is also top notch - 54 pages with 36 posters each:

Don't think this has been posted before, apologies if it has, but while browsing for something else on the UK Amazon site, I came across this book, which is being published on this side of the pond in January.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Voluptuous-Terrors-Horror-Posters-Cinema/dp/1840686901/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1509026157&sr=1-1
No 'Look Inside' tab, so hard to tell whether it will be any good. Still, if one ignores the age-old advice and judges by the cover, it has potential...
-
Looks interesting, for sure.

And another one due out in January, according to Amazon UK.

REEL ART was, for me, the book that opened the door to all those great 30's & 40's posters. Today, Heritage's catalogs serve the same function. That huge ART OF JAMES BOND poster book is THE book to have on OO7 posters, along with Thomas Nixdorf's tome. As much as I want to like it, Frangioni's Clint Eastwood book is only ok, because for me it commits the cardinal sin of spreading 1/2 or 3/4 of a poster across 2 pages which ruins the flow of the poster and frankly looks awful. And it's done throughout the book.
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but there is also the Japanese Viva OO7 book. It's a thin softcover book but it's packed with rare Japanese posters, chirashi's, handbills and all kinds of Bond goodness. The back section of the book has all the Man From UNCLE posters released in Japan.

It would have to go some to be better than Armin's book on Japanese posters!
Update: Found a copy of this in a central London bookstore so was able to browse through it. It's a collection of 100 Japanese horror film posters (roughly 25-33% Japanese films and the rest mainly North Anerican and Italian), one per page. The images are nice, a few obscurities, but many of them will be familiar to fans of this kind of material. Disappointingly, there's no commentary about the posters. Each one tells the year the film was made and the director. As suspected, not a patch on Armin's Banzai book and really only of interest for those new to the fairly extreme/artful Japanese approach to horror film marketing.

Finally releasing information about the limited edition version of The Art of Japanese Monsters:

I'm sure it's one thorough and well researched book, too, Aj.
It looks like a great resource.

AJm, that was just for the numbered/limited leatherbound edition which also included signatures from Godzilla actors Haruo Nakajima (who has since passed away) and Akira Takarada.
The regular softcover edition is still available for 34.99 postpaid in the USA.

I actually read this three weeks ago, pretty good info from his family, friends and artists, but oddly nothing directly from Reynolds Brown himself. He passed in 1990 and presumably gave no interviews since he was obscure.
Major points I remember:
+ his son said he worked in a very small studio at home and would not allow family to see his "lurid" artwork for later MPs
+ he quit MP work out of frustration and turned to generic western art
+ he was "supernova" talented with technical detail, even as child
+ got average pay despite obvious exceptional skill (in another MP book it is reported that artists were readily available and had no bargaining power)

Found this book today, in a shop selling used books. Seems a nice, general reference book.
Titled: Contemporary Polish Posters In Full Color
Published in 1979, and features 46 full color plates of Polish posters, from film, plays and concerts. The posters were selected by Joseph S Czestochowski. He also wrote the introduction.
Synopsis:
"The traditions of Polish graphic art and the influences of folk culture, nationalism, and European art movements are evidenced in a collection of posters created by Polish artists from 1961 to 1977. This superb collection includes 46 full-color examples from the brilliant school of Polish graphic design, selected from the world's first museum (Muzeum Plakatu in Wilanow) dedicated to poster art. Vivid, striking colors and unusual themes-- including theater, sports, circuses, films, concerts -- all show cosmopolitan influences, free imagination."
