Commercial posters (ones printed to be sold directly to the public) have long been considered the "bottom of the barrel" in this hobby (with a few exceptions).
But it seems to me that this is clearly changing! Here are 2,270 commercial posters we have auctioned, and some of the prices may surprise you.

Is this a passing fad, or do you think they are becoming more collectible?

Definitely collectible.

I agree with AJ. Some are just beautiful. This one I think it is a commercial (you sold one a while ago but couldn't find it on your site)

It is incorrectly listed as a "special poster" here:
http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/film_title/NOSTALGIA%2520MERCHANT%2520%28JOHN%2520WAYNE%29/archive.html
I will get those corrected. Thanks!

I have a stack of these. People who know I collect posters, often say to me "Here's a poster, I know you collect them", and 99% of the time they are Commercials.
I have bought a few myself over the years as they could be just pinned up, and look great. I have noticed though some of the ones I remember, and want now, and which I've tried to buy
never turn up, or are quite expensive. So I would say, they will like Video posters have their day, and it maybe have already started...

I went to "correct" this, and Matt pointed out (correctly) that this was a special poster from when they released Wayne movies on video. It was NOT sold to the public, but sent to video stores, so it IS a "special" poster, and NOT a "commercial" poster.
But most collectors think of "special" posters (any poster from a movie that was NOT sold, but was not a standard size) to not be very collectible either, so this applies to them as well!
-
Well actually...i fully agree this is indeed a "special poster"😉
Thanks Bruce and thanks Matt..😊

I think there are several reasons why some types of commercial posters are becoming collectible and more valuable.
the most obvious reasons are that in the 1960s & 70s, for many people, commercial posters are the only things they knew were available to buy.
Surf lovers didn't have Endless Summer one sheets on their walls, they had the Personality Posters 30x40 silk screen posters up, like this one I sold last year

while the owner may have a nostalgiac feeling for the movie poster if he saw the film in the theatre, he is much more likely to have a nostalgiac feeling for the commercial poster (although, this is a rare case where a commercial poster was also used theatrically at some theatres and drive-ins, probably due to it being available via catalog).
The great Barbarella poster, we all had the hots for Jane and that poster image is not available in any theatrical paper that I'm aware of

How many people had a Pink Floyd poster for the Wall? oops.. I forgot to add, but was it the movie poster or a store-bought poster? or did it come with the record album???
Right now I have a hug load of comic book and sports commercial posters. The bulk of the comics posters are 80s-on, but the sports posters are 1960s stuff - a great period for sports posters. I think they will sell well because these are what we had in our homes, on our walls, in our basements, in our garages, in the clubhouses.
Listen, I've had movie posters since I was 10, but I was involved in the hobby.
99% of the other kids had store bought posters, including this one

and this one

Paul, I like the use of an audio cassette and case being used as weights, on the Dracula poster.
A nice touch!!
Is that poster from Dracula AD 1972?
cheers
-
Hahaha, yea, it's all I could find at the time to hold it down..
Tis a publicity shot from Drac AD, well spotted Jeff.
-
Paul, I've not seen this film. But have heard/read mixed things on it... some saying it is dreadful.
And are the lovelies at Lee's feet, worshiping vampiresses?
-
That shot is not in the film Jeff, it was just a publicity shot.
Dracula AD, And Satanic Rites does take some stick from the so called fans of the genre, but I love them both. If nothing else they are like a period piece now. I would take them both over Taste the Blood of Dracula, which I think is the weakest of the series. Don't get me wrong I still watch it from time to time also.
Give it a watch, I'm sure if taken in the Vain it was intended, you'll enjoy it. It's no Citizen Kane, just entertainment.
Plus Caroline is in it.. ;)
-
Thanks, Paul.
Lee is so great as the Count.. and he played the role in such a number of films.
I will give it a watch.

Well it turns out it's not a shoot from Drac AD, it's a Daily Mirror (U.K. news-paper) photo-shoot from 71, learning all the time... :D
-

No, they mistook Chris for me.

No, they mistook Chris for me.
That's Christopher to you

That's His Exalted Highness of Darkness to you, punk. wynk
