One of my little niche collections. I'm French, she's French and probably one of the most famous French women in history (behind Joan of Arc). So it made sense to me. Plus, she's quite attractive, and I'm a dude. So there.
I'll start with some nice Japanese posters, some of them acquired thanks to Matt, so thank you Matt.

Not bad

Awesome to see them all together T!

We haven't even got on to English language printings yet! This is a wonderful niche collection (my favourite from Thierry's vaults) because the images and poster designs are so different - and BB is so charismatic. Surely a gallery exhibition beckons?

Thanks guys. Yeah, I like this little niche collection of mine. Niche collections is the reason I love collecting. Trying to complete a collection is fun. I actually selfishly started the thread because I wanted to see them all together.
I'll do French next.

Is Ballester great or what?
But besides the Ballesters, it is cool to see such a diversity of styles from all the different countries.
-
Ballester is simply too good to be a movie poster artist. He doesn't belong in the advertisement field. I'm glad he joined the fray, but he's clearly above everyone else.

Is that all... don't you have any others?
-
That is just insane.
Sometime wonder if I have the credentials for this site.
Love the first Le Mepris...
-
A truly magnificent collection, T.
With all of your resources, you should be putting out a line of books.
-
Thanks. Selfishly, I'm only posting them here because it helps me see what I'm missing. I can't really see that on my site because they're all together, but when I put them by country, the missing ones is all I see. There are 3 major must-own I don't have, but they very rarely pop up. I got one two days ago though. Will add it when it gets here.
T

Ok, T, love ya to bits. You've got the posters, the knowledge and the site. And the time, energy and wherewithal to do the above.
But, on the Laura thread, you said you hadn't the time to look for individual cards from broken sets.... Yet you have, at last count, 139,539 Bardot posters and you are trawling for (just) three 'Must Haves'.
I am being a pain in the ass with the above, I must admit. But still, it is a question.
-
To answer your question, posters don't come as sets, lobby cards do. I see absolutely zero fun in chasing little pieces of 11x14in paper. And I don't see the point of owning 3 lobby cards and not 8. Like I said, to me, it's a set or nothing. Collecting different posters from around the world, now that's fun because you don't need to complete a set.

Good answer. Ta.
Will shut up now.
Le Mepris.... love it.
-
The Italians are my favourite...the artists seem to understand and capture her allure that tiny bit more accurately. Great posters, T.

Now the one sheets... oldest to most recent... 1954 to 1968.

Ah, and in English, it is Contempt. Lovely.
There are more. I'm not even close to being done. As we speak, there are 3 more Japanese posters en route. There are still a few choice French and Italian ones I need to get, I know where they are but they are all too expensive for my taste. Then there are the Germans. I haven't even tacked the Germans yet. But I will. Soon.

My first Bardot experience was through 'Spirits of the Dead,'... fell in love immediately.

So I wasn't going to post my pathetic Bardot German collection, because it is just that, pathetic, in light of all the material out there, but then I just acquired two more pieces, and I thought what the heck...

Same with me, too, Simes. So I dont think it's your connection, just lots of imagery to have to carry over.

What's the appropriate adjective for such a collection of Bardot posters - a blizzard of...a beauty of...? There's probably a more apt word in French, there usually is, but my O level French (1969) isn't adequate to the occasion.
And if that's a niche collection then my entire collection would slip through a crack in the floor!
-
My God. This is both aesthetic overload and sobering at the same time. I'm speechless - except that as a beginner, I consider BB one of my niche genres, but it's now so microscopic, "humbled" doesn't begin to describe what I feel. Thanks so much for sharing.

Man this is some Bardot collection. She was stunning in her hey day.
I only have two Bardot's, the UK quad for Shalako and this

Interesting story behind this. This is a very early piece from Miracle films with a different title. (And God Created Woman).
Both titles were certificated in Feb 1957. The new title was released two months later. I was told it was more than likely Tony Tenser who got the title changed.

Don't let it humble you. I felt the same way when I started collecting 15 years ago and never looked back. I think it was Dan Rickard's collection that impressed me back then. What you have to do is build your own collection and not worry about what other people have. Buy what you like and not what you think will be worth something tomorrow. You will never be disappointed. And you'll see, 5 years from now your collection will humble someone and you can tell them not to worry about it and move on.
I have more Bardots in my collection. Just check the link in my sig and navigate to the left. You'll find her there, sitting pretty amongst other pretties.

Someone gave me advice very similar to this when I first got going.... it took someone pointing out this same sentiment to ground me and not lust after someone else's stacks, and make me appreciate the thought and effort I'd put into my own modest collection. It still rings true today.
Well said, T.

Well, I should have known this hobby was like some others I've been a part of. As a vintage camera collector (for only a few years) I'm equally awed by pics of private collections that have taken 60 years to establish, rooms lined with display cases filled with thousands of every camera imaginable.
I didn't mean to imply the extent of your BB collection affected me negatively in any way - in fact, it's inspiring. What I am beginning to realize is that collecting only lobby cards will eventually be limiting as they are no longer made in most cases. The posters are just so damned beautiful I may have to reconsider. It's still the storage space that gives me pause.
I've always collected examples that appeal to me, never as an investment. I've been a film fanatic all my life, ever since my dad took my brother and me to the Saturday afternoon matinees in our home town theater. Attack of the Crab Monsters comes to mind as one of the first - it was that long ago. I was ten, I believe. There are so many films and actors that have been meaningful sign posts throughout my life - it's a visceral thing in many cases.
-
There is nothing wrong with just collecting lobby cards. They are fun to collect. I collect them too, though not as fervently as posters, and I am somewhat limited since I only want full sets (US: http://www.eatbrie.com/LCUS.htm, French: http://www.eatbrie.com/LCFrench.htm, German: http://www.eatbrie.com/LCGerman.htm, Italian: http://www.eatbrie.com/LCItalian.htm). To me, they go hand in hand with the posters. Anyhow, back to Bardot :)

Anyhow, back to Bardot :)
If you say so :)
From Sherry, FFF co-owner:
"Your Brigitte Bardot posters are gorgeous! Are you missing any? My favorite one of her's is Le Mepris. What's yours?"
-
Yes, I'm missing plenty unfortunately. A few key pieces. Very rare ones.
No, I don't have a favorite. Of the ones I own, I'd say these seven top my list. A few of them I've only seen once in my years of collecting. Italians are always the best.

I think they would top most Bardot lovers favorites list.

Not a bad one in the lot. The, Miss Spogliarello and Les Bijoutiers... are the standouts for me.
T, a bit off topic, but have you ever been contacted by a gallery or other private enterprise regarding exhibiting this, or any other parts of your vast collection?
-
No, but at the same time, I don't really go out of my way to advertise my collection. The name Eatbrie doesn't really scream movie posters. Sure, I post posters on this forum from time to time, like in the Bardot thread, but I don't know in the Latest Acquisitions thread, which is probably one of the most read threads. Most people don't check signature links either. And I don't sell, which is usually the best way to advertise oneself. A lot of people don't care seeing things they cannot buy.

He only brings his posters out for display for high days and holidays.
And maybe a kid's birthday.
You will see his kids' progression through their birthdays as ET posters progress to Carrie posters. True story.

Makes a lot of sense.
I like the fact that you don't necessarily show off your collection, but you don't hide it either. Too many folks crying "look at me" these days.
From time to time I'll visit your site and go down the rabbit hole of your collection for a half hour at a time. I appreciate the time it must take to keep that thing kept current.

It's not work if you enjoy it :)
I'm very swift. I buy some posters and put them on my site immediately. I probably do it three times a week. If I wait too long, it becomes work, because I have to add some 20 posters, and that's not fun. 80% of them are space fillers, so you will never see them in my Best Purchases thread. Most of the modern stuff falls in that category. They get buried. On average, I add 1,300 posters a year. It has been like that for a few years now.
Happy to see someone enjoys it.

Speaking of which, how many of your posters do you have on display versus packed away?
Like Simes said, I have one poster on display, right now a B0 for Jedi, and the rest tucked away. I love posters for their historical value and because I love movies, but not to display. I used to display posters in high school, but not since. Most people don't understand, but it's my thing.
T
-
Actually, so did I used to display posters when of school age.
And then I stopped.
And many years later, four choice posters are now on permanent display, backed, framed, and behind the best glass in the business.
-

T
I use to get them away very quickly as well, but I found I wan't taking time to appreciate the art/design. Now I spend a bit more time with them before they are archived, not long though.
I'm the same way about my walls. I've only got two framed and up at the moment. My 2001 Hungarian A1 in the home office, and my Goonies OS hanging over the kids homework/art table. Though I'd have to break that rule if I had all of those beautiful Bardot's around, probably have the place wallpapered with them ;)

Yes, I've been very very slow on the German front. I will eventually get them. I know where they are, most of them, but I'm a little difficult when it comes to condition and I won't do pin holes or tears, which makes it a little more difficult when looking at posters from that era.

Someone was recently asking if my last Bardot poster was amongst my favorites, so I decided to rank my top 25 (of the ones I own). There are a few I don't own yet which would most certainly change my list.
From #1 to #25... No love for US posters.

Love the quad.

I followed the bidding for the BB quad and kind of guessed the "US bidder" was Thierry. As you say Paul, sadly you had no chance. It's a great poster for sure.
Mark

I woke up at 5:15am to bid on this poster. I wasn't going to let it go. Were you the underbidder, Paul?
T

Yes, I thought you had this, if you'd have said I'd have kept off...

A tough thing this 'politeness between forum members' vs 'balls out bidding aggression' for unknowns... 8)

Yes, I thought you had this, if you'd have said I'd have kept off...
Didn't know you were my competition on Bardot, so didn't even think of telling you. Not too many people are interested in posters like that (maybe 2 or 3 on this forum). Now I KNOW!!!
;)

Only on British stuff T, I only have 3. I was after other stuff in that Auction, but still had a go at a few others this included.

A few more came in.

T, Your Bardot collection is so great to see! Thanks for this thread. I'm really enjoying it! If you don't mind, I can provide the one poster I have of Bardot from the Thai painted poster for Don Juan, or if Don Juan Were a Woman. Okie

Glad you enjoy it. It's certainly not for everyone, as most specific collections are, but it brings me a lot of pleasure. I am actually in the process of compiling a list of all the Bardot posters out there, some I have never seen before and will never own, others that I can locate and need to price out. Some I didn't know existed keep popping up, like Heritage had a 40x60in tonight that I couldn't pass on, even though the condition was awful.

T, I especially like your Bardot collection because it shows how different artists interpret the inspiring Ms. Bardot. Okie

That's what's fun about collecting in general. If you really like a specific movie, it's fun to own all the different designs on it. That's what drives me anyway.

T, I really like Bardot's wild hair on the il Disprezzo poster! Hey, I just noticed the Fritz Lang credit on this poster: very interesting. Okie
-
Le Mépris (French title) is, imo, Godard's best film, and that says a lot since he's made a lot of great movies. It's also one of the most talked about French flicks ever. A true classic of world cinema. Fritz Lang is in it.

If you haven't seen it, you should. And Bardot is at her most beautiful in this movie. That scarf she wears, every woman wore a scarf like that after the movie.
T
-
Okie, not only Fritz Lang is in it, but he actually plays himself. "Le Mepris" is an adaptation of a novel by the same title by Alberto Moravia, and differs quite significantly from the source material. Both film and book are great in their own way.
-
Hi, T and Antoine! I'm guilty! I promise to watch Le Mépris this weekend. Thanks for helping in my great world film education! Okie
-
Good stuff, T...always fun to see this thread bumped with new ones. I just love the Italian and French illustrations of her...Amori Celebri is beautiful.
-
There are a bunch of US 6-sheets, Italian and Argentinian BB posters in emovieposter's auction this Sunday.
-
Lots of mostly lesser Bardots going for sale lately. Got a few, lost a bunch, most of them are going for too much, imo. The completist in me keeps trying, but most are in terrible condition. It's so hard to spend money on a "good" condition poster. I wonder why so many suddenly. And none of the good ones, French or Italians. Probably good for the bank account.
T
-
A few more acquired in the past month or so... Nothing too crazy, mostly completist stuff (although I had to fight for some of them), but I'm still happy to add them to the collection.

So I never really post my new acquisitions, probably because I don't feel I have anything exciting to show, but also because I have a website (no need to be redundant), but from time to time I get a poster I am really excited about (even if I'm the only one haha).
I collect Bardot (one of my main sub-collections) and had been looking for this one for... what, ten years, fifteen maybe? To the point that I started thinking that it didn't exist. I helps when good people know that you collect certain things and let you know that they have such things. And now it's mine.
Et Dieu... Créa la Femme (And God Created Woman), 1956 German A0 by Bruno Rehak.
I'm pleased and it belongs in this thread.

Hahaha
Nope, its already tucked away in its drawer waiting for my kids to discover it, hopefully in many years.
Got a couple more for good measure. I don't think they have already been posted, but if they have, I appologize.

I can't believe it's been 6 years since I started this thread with some Japanese posters on an actress who is arguably the most famous product to ever come out of France, short of Brie and wine, that is.
I just got 2 new Japanese taketans and I'm very excited, which doesn't happen much anymore. I own about 600 pieces on Bardot and stuff I had never seen keeps popping up. That's what's so cool about older movie stars, so much material to uncover.
Cette Sacrée Gamine (Mam’zelle Pigalle/That Naughty Girl) (1956)

All others, lovely.

I hear you. I knew those posters would be of no interest to most collectors, but to a completist like me they are gold, which is why I posted them, something I rarely do nowadays.

Oh God yes, completely appreciate the sentiments. And thanks for popping them up.

I was interested in that German ET DIEU double panel as well. But it was very pricey and it's
not Rehak's best work regarding her her face / head. But it's a great poster of course, I saw it
only 3 times in 30 years.

Nice, and in great condition. There are 3 above that I really want, but only in mint and folded condition, which is why I still don't have them. I will at some point.
And I agree with the Et Dieu… Créa la Femme. Not the best face, but it doesn't bother me so much. I just look at the body ;) And this one will not be leaving my collection as long as I live and breathe. Also, I would have paid twice as much for it.

Cracking.
