So I looked down a long list of posters I bought in 2011 (more than 1,000) and plucked a few out of it. These are not necessarily the most expensive, only my favorites. I'm sure I'm missing a few I will add later.

They are all cool but I like The Mummy, Good Bad and the Ugly, and Deliverance the most. Nice haul!

Suspiria looks a bit shoddy..when you get bored with it..pm me... ;D
Stew
Yeah the Mummy and Laura suck pretty bad too
-
they all suck because it doesn't look like even one of Eatshit's.. I mean Eatbrie's above posters come from the broad swath of material mr Thierry hates "French Grande" has won on MoviePosterBid.com
I'm suing him for the bigoted way he represents all other sellers (including Bruce whose magnets I see) and not MoviePosterBid.com
I'm callin' the ACLU MPCLU right now to get a lawsuit started

Lovely Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

That Dr. No is the best paper in existence for the Bond films. IT Night of the Living Dead posters are way undervalued.
If anyone ever gets bored and wants to come to IA and sort and organize my collection and put it on the web that would be great. I cant even tell ya what I bought this year :-[
-
Shalako...
If this was flipped round to Sean Connery in..
Probably worth a fiver.......
Rubbish so far T,i`d bet my Too wong foo gets a better price than most of this junk...

Nice collection!
I don't think I bought one poster all year long. I did get a bunch of lobbies and stills, though!

Here are some of my purchases I acquired over the year. Most are from the past 57 days. For some reason this year I didn't bother to take pictures of the items I acquired. I will take a picture of Casablanca and post it soon. I received the silver GBU Italian four sheet yesterday . I've been looking for this poster for awhile. It came up on Heritage back in November, but I passed on it, which I'm glad i did. So with this latest addition. I now have both silver GBU posters. You can see both of them together below.

Original 1962 akira kurosawa SANJURO Japanese B2. The poster was glued to a board for about 45 years(1966-2011). From about 1978 to 2008 it was displayed in a bookshop in pasadena where it took a daily bath in afternoon sunlight. Needless to say by the time I received the poster, it needed to be removed from the board

Mike - Is this an original HORRORS OF MALFORMED MEN or DEFORMED MAN, the 1969 cult classic?
If so, it's the first real paper I have ever seen for it. Quite a find.

Awesome stuff, guys. clap
2011 was definitely the best year of my life, in terms of movie poster purchases. ;D
I'll go ahead and post these for fun, and I won't try to compete with all y'all as that would be quite...

And if y'all want,

Sorry Rich, I guess I'm just part of the new school with films. In my second Freshman year at FSU, we watched it in "Multi-Cultural Film class" and wrote a paper on it. I have zero recollection of the paper but vaguely remember learning about how it is an iconic movie. After reading this review by Glenn Andreiev (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024216/) during my 30 second Google research, I can see why many consider it to be like The Matrix (on an even higher level of course) of yesteryear, and after thinking about it, it would make sense how the historical aspect combined with the great art make a lot of the gear for it epic.

King Kong is more in line with the legendary status of films, like GWTW, Ben Hur, Birth of a Nation etc than it is the Matrix. Heretic!!!

it's hard for me to add to "what I bought this year" because I'm years behind in photography of my collection, and I only want to use pics I shoot myself. below are a couple pics.. in addition to these items a short list of buys includes French Grrandes for Eyes Without a Face, Ipcress File (red face style), Lady in the Lake I got an insert, TC and some scene cards, from Bruce a Japanese Big Sleep poster, from Heritage a Blue Dahlia 3sh (Spanish language US poster), a few 1950s Harryhausen posters found their way here, I picked up a lobby set for Blue Dahlia (I had 5 cards, needed the Lake cards, so I bought a set & sold my dupes), from Bruce, Heritage and elsewhere I copped quite a number of posters & lobby cards for my gambling collection, from various sources I picked up a number of French Grrrrandes from the 1930s & 40s. From a guy on ebay I picked up a number of US stills from Orphee & other Jean Cocteau films (Orphee is among my top favorite films. like in my personal top 20). Still for Orphee are as scarce as hen's teeth. I'm lucky to have both styles of Fr Grrandes + some original release French stills as well as pieces from other nations.. still need that UK Quad. Night of the Hunter - best card, Cool Hand Luke egg card, City for Conquest TC, Jailhouse Rock - TC & Jail card.. I mean.. I got several hundreds of pieces for my collection this year.. that's what makes it so fun!

Some really cracking posters on this page! 'Fraid I can't see the first two pages as my computer freezes when trying to load all the images :'( Mel you had some serious fun last year, you must be really happy with all the quality posters you bagged! I love that King Kong poster Rick, stunning, and love the condition with all its history.
These are my best purchases of 2011:
This how I started the year... still no guarantee it's authentic but until someone proves otherwise I'm going with it ;D

$150 BIN on eBay about 5 minutes after it was posted last spring. It has some tape residue on the middle fold at the top and bottom, but I was pleased regardless :)

By the way, I think I need to use something other than Picasa to shrink down my pics... those look terrible for as much time as I put into photographing them! Blurry as all hell.

Karmic retribution for your "poster deal of the century" thievery :)

I'm pretty sure that fate threw me that $50 Star-Wars-collection bone after I missed out on the 1931 attic stash. I was crushed when the big bidders showed up. I bet combined those posters sell for north of $150K easy. Maybe $250K. An original Maltese Falcon, both styles of Cimarron, both styles of Public Enemy, Style B Little Ceasar, both styles of Seed, Dishonored... and probably 20+ more. hitself
-
Seeing them all I pick Mel's Astounding She-Monster as the one I want desperately for myself, Paul's GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE quad is a close second and I'm strangely drawn to Chris's Aussie To Have Or Have Not. Ofcourse Bogart is a badly drwan boy, but it has a certain something.

Great year Matias. Awesome Wolfman but my favorite is still the Abbott and Costello Meet The Invisible Man.

Wim
And I want three of yours -- KILLER SHREWS 1/2 sheet; Italian HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and French CARMEN.
I'd hot link your pics, but they're gigantic and will crash the forum.
Three outstanding pieces, Wim! thumbup

This poster at this size and in this condition is really something. Congrats, Neo.
Lotsa beautiful posters...
Thank you sir. At $15 it was probably about the best deal of the year for me, IMO. One thing acquiring original posters has learned me is how to get good deals on various stuff that a few years ago I may have paid a lot more for, and it looks like this year has been a good one for acquisitions and bargains for several people here.
-
This how I started the year... still no guarantee it's authentic but until someone proves otherwise I'm going with it ;D

A certain awesome something ;) For an Aussie poster Bogart's likeness is actually rather well done. The Aussie artists usually stepped up a bit more on the one sheets. For a litho rendering it's a-ok with me...

Click Me! (http://www.abideposters.com/theposters/galleries/blackswan2010.html)

This is special, Charlie. Truly classic...
Yep except when I go into a trance staring at Audrey, the Ghost Breakers is the winner for me this year (for sure, the intl swans and my Lebowski are solid scores). "Epic" comes to mind. Modern day? Devil's Rejects is the only one released in the last (almost) 25 years... And The (terminally dull :P) Exorcist is what, 40?
Where is the cut-off? Most of these were made before the current crop of horror fans were born.

I guess it all depends on how old you are. If Ted is 80, then 1973 is like yesterday. But for someone who's 20 today, it's ages ago.
I showed Wargames to a couple of 21-22 year old friends of my nephew. I love that movie. They thought it was super slow and so boring. It is true that they were not born when the movie came out and that they grew up with the iPhone. A movie about an early computer to them is like a movie about early TV to others.

What is your major malfunction, Jason?
Just like to argue?
The 'cut-off' is wherever you want it to be.
For me, I kinda liken anything modern as 1970 and newer.
Not just because of an arbitrary date, but because of the mind-set and evolution of the media.
And no, T, I'm not 80... wynk

my date is something between 1960 & 1970, but it is a rather anomolous definition "Modern"
"Modern" art is post WW2 as defined by the movement
is art after 1995 called X-Gen??
to me, modern age in comics was the period after which I lose interest in collecting from that period (which was 1968 or so. I always liked "old" comics)
-
Since there is no clear definition I would say it is up to each fan to decide. I personally agree with Ted about the 70's and newer being modern. Last House On the Left, The Exorcist, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were some of the first films that signaled a change to a more graphic, disturbing, and violent type of horror. I could see a case being made for Psycho kicking it off or even later with Halloween ushering in the slasher era.

That's why I suggested someone start some Film Discussion threads.

The 'grande' one is Piper, she was acquired in 2008 (just turned 3), and the 'petite' one is Scout, who was acquired September 23, 2011.

Chris, you have girls too? I didn't think I would have wanted girls, but after our first one, I knew I wanted another one...so we were so pumped when the second one was confirmed.
Paul, thanks a bunch. Yeah, I shudder to think of college bills. I am still reeling from Piper starting pre-school this week. It's very bittersweet.
Time is a thief that will never be caught...cheesy, but true.

Getting married is a minor speed bump in the way your life is changed compared to having the first child. The third one is scary because then you are outnumbered. After three you are just numb.
But having kids was the best thing I ever did!
Bruce

Gets my vote too Charlie.

Ben, and anyone else who has decided to bring a child into their collection, gets my vote for best purchase all round lol.
Congratulations to all!
Anyway, my best purchase in that case would have to be the one I made on April 29, 2011 - my girlfriend.
She's a complete breath of fresh air.
Poster-wise, my best purchase has to be the seldom seen Diamonds Are Forever Marler Haley set (the full set, including the quad).
Cheers,

Adam, you'll go place's with that Girl. I don't know how you remember the date you met.... But I do know things like that impress women. ;)

Cheers, Paul.
I remember dates relatively easily, especially important ones.
April 29, 2011 is an important date in terms of the history of the Monarch, for Kelly and I will share our anniversary with that of the marriage of Prince William & Kate Middleton.

But if its such a good thread hijack. Cant be much wrong with that Arch. ,?
Stew
Actually, my point was that both my post and the adorable kids pic could be considered 'hijacking' by the exceptionally nitpicky amongst us, but so what? Conversations bend and weave and as long as they remain tangential to the subject at hand they further the cause by encouraging discussion and building engagement. At some point, endless categorization becomes an exercise in futility.
I also note, that while the Brudster freaked out about my post, his reaction to the pic (which spawned a full page of comments far, far more off topic than my question) was purely hypocritical...
-
We should start some genre-specific Film Discussion threads...
It's a good idea except the length of that thread would have many many branches! Not all genres are actually 'genres' - eg Film Noir and Blaxploitation are often referred to as a genre but really they are styles (perhaps a sub-genre?) yet many people collect posters based on the style and will refer to it as a genre.
Many Hollywood movies created their own 'genre' just to suit the fashion style of the day yet they have gone on to be still referred to as a genre years later - some that come to mind would be Disaster movies, Slasher movies, and even The Epic is often used in the same sentence as the word genre.
And to keep the original thread on track, my favourite purchase of 2011 and by no means the most expensive was the German version of The Barfoot Contessa, I am so very very pleased with it.
More so when I compare it to the design of the USA one sheet version, the German is far superior but that's my opinion of course...

Congrats on 2 beautiful girls Ben! Mine turns 2 in a couple of months and she's going to be a big sister in August, so I know what you mean about the poster budget taking a hit. But, for once, it is a budget cut that I do not mind at all!
-
"Bruce, are your kids into posters by any chance?"
Not really, but I DID make them all movie lovers (by showing them great ones), and that's way more important.
My oldest is 18, and he was a runner, and 5 months ago was 5'10' and 155 pounds of lean muscle. For some reason, he them decided to quit track and become a body builder, and 5 months later he is 200 pounds of bulging muscle and no fat, so I got him the poster from Pumping Iron that shows a closeup of Arnold's arm, and that is hanging in his room!

Don't take it back, Paul, you might be onto something. I added 215 posters from 2011 to my collection last year. I say "added" because not all were purchased. I probably got 1/3 for free.
Here are some I actually like by alphabetical order... some OS, some bus shelters...

Don't know if i showed this purchase yet. I think it is the purchase I like the most as I cant remember many of my purchases, probably as I was mostly bottom feeding throughout this year. Well, this one is currently at the linen backers waiting to be backed

I like this one T. I also like the P Cruz poster. I was in Spain for 6 months in the early naughties and there were lots of large posters in store displays of her wearing not much (lingerie). Haven't seen them again, wish I somehow got my hands on them. Couldnt speak spanish and my spanish girlfriend at the time I doubted would have lifted a finger to help so didn't ask! Actually I only started collecting 4 years ago so maybe these earlier posters peaked my interest.

Are you talking about these... they are all bus stop size.

Much like Paul, is there anything you DON'T have, T!? :o

Well, from what I gather, there are plenty of Bond posters I don't own, mainly because I refuse to feed dealers' families. And trust me, seeing how many posters I buy, there is an ocean of posters still to be acquired.

T
Not sure what bus stop size is, but they were large, approx half way between Thierry hates "French Grande" and 4F. They weren't for Mango I don't think, but she wore just lingerie so those Mango ones make her look like someones mum ;)

Then I must get 'em too. Will be looking. Send me pix if you find any.

I saw them on the walls of local (spanish) lingerie stores at the time, about 10 years ago, but haven't seen them on the net the times I tried to find them since unfortunately. They were definitely of her as she looked damn similar to my gf at the time & she was already a big name in Spain and just starting to do well in the US. Maybe try looking on spanish websites, rather than US?

I'm not much of a daybill guy, but I'd suck the snot out of a dead man's nose for this one. mesmrized

Who wouldn't Ted!? :o

Yeah, I'm with Ted on this one. Don't care much for Daybills, but there are just some titles that transcend the format.
Nice one.

At the end of the day, to each his own. That's what makes collecting so fun... to see what other people collect and why, what you're missing and what you can do without. My biff with Daybills is not so much about size (although it is too small for my taste) but more about content. I just don't like the artistry, the drawings, whatever you want to call it. It doesn't appeal to me, as I'm sure French posters, or Italians, do not appeal to others.
It's all good. More for the ones who like it.

Gotta agree on the quality of the Elvis poster. Normally can't find anything of worth in any of His posters (beyond "Jailhouse Rock") and generally agree with Chuck D on His music, but that is a spectacular set of gams on that daybill that I'd happily own. "FP" ain't so bad either, but I'd give the win to the spanish one sheet.
Awe inspiring stuff so far.
