I grew up watching his movies, came to America following his advice, worked a few feet away from his office... so it only made sense that I would collect posters from the movies he directed and produced.
Now, I'm at the point where I pretty much have everything I want on the guy, give or take a few pieces (some of them I've only seen in picture and don't even know if they exist).
So if you see something I'm missing, please email me. I'm not interested in buying a design I already have (Indy 3 had the same design all around the world). The latest posters are at the top, and it goes down in time.

The sheer volume on display there Thierry is very impressive.
-
Thanks, I guess (I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed).
I'm a completist (is this a word?), so as soon as I started, I couldn't stop. It became a game. A friend of mine recently showed it to SS and he didn't even know some of these posters existed.

That reminds me...i think i have a few for your collection...definately a cape fear you're lacking and a couple for Sugarland express...I think...this weekend if I get a chance...
-
Ha, Ves, I knew this thread would be good for me!
-
That's damn impressive
-
Hey T.,
Massive stuff there. So much to choose from. If I had to choose, my favorite is probably the ET bike/moon along with a majority of the ET international versions you have and right behind that would be the olympic Gremlins posters.
What is your favorite Spielberg poster you have in your collection?
Cj
-
T needs to publish a book. I like the new Clint Eastwood poster book that came out, but Thierry knows he can do better. What a great thing it would be to see his collection in one volume.
-

Cj
I don't know. Probably this one.
-
What were the hardest ones to find? The Gremlins?
-
That book thing is actually a good idea... Not his whole collection but parts of it like this one .. Make some calls and see if any publishers would be interested .. and from there is just taking pictures !! :) Could be a gold mine !! Who knows it may even make all the money back that you spent on the posters .... maybe .. :P

It's not a bad idea. I know I could get Spielberg to write something. I'm still missing a few pieces, though. But I'm thinking about it.
-
What were the hardest ones to find? The Gremlins?
I found the Gremlins a long time ago. What was difficult was to get the owner to sell them to me. He was really attached to them, but in the end, it all came down to money. Here's the story I wrote on MPF a while back...
Now for the funny story... I don't know the guy, he could live in Turkistan for all I know. So I buy the posters. I live in L.A., I give him my address, and he sends the posters. A few days later, I contact him, ask him if he mailed the posters. He answers that he did, and I check the USPS site to see when I shall expect them. Then I see Glendale written on the USPS link. Shit, I think, he's sending them to my old address (I used to work at DreamWorks, which is in Glendale.) So I email him, and he says: "No, Glendale is where I sent the posters from." Shit again, I say, you could have given them to my wife, who works at DreamWorks. So he answers, and I quote: "What? Really? That's where I work!!!" Turns out he works a building apart from my wife's. Yet, I had been on his ass for 2 years. Small world, hey?
Now regarding your question, I'd say the Swedish Duel, Jaws Thai, Turkish CE3K, Polish E.T. and the three US Gremlins.
T.
-
Hey Thierry, have you ever found any posters for Band of Brothers or Taken?
Also, you are probably aware of this already, but there was a Rolling Roadshow print for CE3K by Jay Ryan in 2005.
-
I'm not a fan of Jay Ryan. In fact, I passed on all his posters. But please humor me, what does CE3K look like?
Re: TV - I don't collect TV or video posters.
T.
-
You know that Ferris poster you have is Jay Ryan right? Anyway, here is the CE3K print.
-
Yes, you're right. I didn't realize. Well, I do like Ferris Bueller, but I really hate everything else, including that CE3K poster. So much could have been done with this movie. What is THAT?
Thierry
-
I agree with you Thierry. I am not a huge fan of Jay Ryan's work most of the time. It is too bland for me. I have his 2001 and No Country for Old Men. Ferris would be next on the list, but IMO, its still not great. And I have avoided it based on the price it goes for now.
-
Hey Thierry, have you considered renting a space to display your great stuff? A guy in my apartment complex rents the apartment next to his JUST to display his art collection. I guess he pays $1500ish a month for the extra apartment. Not cheap obviously, but it's worth it to him.

How many more posters could you buy with that $1500 each month. Or save it for 6 months and get a really kick ass piece that is rare and worth some coin.

He could easily finance it just by selling some of his extra posters and reducing his monthly poster budget.
Throw in 50 frames for $2000, add a pool table, foosball table, and poker table and you've got an "entertainment" crib. He could even charge admission to finance it - "the Steven Spielberg poster museum."
Just a thought...

What's his "art collection"?
-
someone withy too much money I suspect, good luck, but farq thats crazy, unless he needs a place to sleep or hang out when his wife is mad at him. and for that $ id hope she is mad at him often.
Put em on you walls.
-
What's his "art collection"?
I'm not sure exactly what he collects - I think he mentioned some sculpture. I've been meaning to go see it for a while - I'll have to invite myself up there. He's up on the top floor, with all the other fancy schmancy DC people - ambassadors, etc. I'll try to take some pics, although I'm not sure he'll allow that. I think he does have some bucks, has a second home in Florida (might be there now, in fact, with all the other "snowbirds.")
-
I'm pretty sure he won't allow you to take pictures and put them on a public forum ;) Most people who collect expensive stuff tend to hide it, for multiple reasons, #1 being Uncle Sam. Just wondering, that's all. I worked with Seinfeld for a little while, and I went to his hangar at the Santa Monica Airport. He owns about thirty cars, a lot of Porsches, most of them #1 to come out of the factory. Although he lives in the Hampton and owns a house in Malibu, when he comes over here and his wife stays back East, he sleeps in the hangar, with his cars. So I'm not at all surprised a guy would rent an entire apartment to exhibit his sculptures. The reverse is also true. I know an old couple in L.A. who owns Matisses, Renoirs and Delacroix, and live in a tiny little apartment, in a gated community. One of their pieces could buy the whole building.

I thought this might be the place to post this since it's Spielberg related. I just upgraded my movie posters on my wall. I used to have the Schindler's List video poster and the reprint Saving Private Ryan poster. I got a real Schindler's List poster through skiper007 off eBay, and I got the Saving Private Ryan poster (the rarer version which I think looks a lot better actually) from Thierry (eatbrie) as a gift. He also sent me an awesome American Beauty poster but I put that away for safekeeping with my other rolled posters.
These posters are hung by having each corner put in a Mylar sleeve, and then I taped the Mylar sleeves to the wall. None of the tape touches the poster, only the Mylar. The posters can be removed from my wall without any damage. I'm not sure if you can see how I did this in the picture, but it seems to be working out pretty well.
I regret that I taped my Inglourious Basterds poster on my wall and had not thought of the Mylar earlier. I'm not sure if I can remove the tape without damaged and rehang it using the Mylar. This is the only other poster I have on my wall currently. I'm planning on getting a Shawshank Redemption poster next, and I will of course use my Mylar idea to hang it.
~ Juli
-
Juli,
If you need to get the tape off without tearing the paper, try the "hairdrier trick" -- a pro restorer told me this one and it has worked wonders for me. You gently heat up the part of the poster with the tape on it, the adhesive will become much more pliable and gooey and you should be able to get the tape off with damaging the poster (or your wall)
No comebacks though if you melt the paper!
-
that's an interesting collection Thierry. Though I am suprised you collect virtually every poster from every country regardless of whether the image is the same
I collect on some films posters for all countries.. unless the image is the same.. I stopped that except for some representative examples
that said.. I think I have some CEOTTK posters that you don't have coming up in the next auction
-
Funny you should say that, Rich. I'm 100% with you. It was never really my intent to double some designs, but when I ended up finding them for under $5 or so, I was like, why not? And little by little, I added them up. I have tried to keep it to a minimum, but you're right, sometimes too much is too much.
T
-
the usual collector/hoarder mentality, I have so many copies of certain books its not funny, if I see it cheap i buy it, EG some Heinlien paperbacks, I have 6+ copies of, all the same, but if I walk into a thrift shop and see Stranger in a strange land for 50c I CANT not buy it. Get teased by my daughter endlessly, and its silly cos it takes so much space. With Posters, I originally found it very hard to let any go, now I stick to keeping my core collection, and the rest I can let go of (sometimes).
-
Because I know you guys are so eager to know this, I wanted to inform you that I just passed the 600 poster cap in my Spielberg collection, which means 600 posters with Spielberg's name on them.

You should have told us at 714... it's a nice Tintin conection. :)

Seriously impressive collection, that's just a huge amount of posters! I really like the French Landi design for Duel, I bet it looks great in that big format.
What's your fave Spielberg film then, T? Be warned that anything other than Jaws or Raiders will result in trouble ;)

Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.

I guess my two favorite Spielberg films are DUELL and 1941.
Some of my DUEL posters (Germany, Australia, Japan, France):

You state on your site that Spielberg has "Acted in 1 film ("The Blues Brothers")" - how about this though?
Steven Spielberg ... Himself / Famous Director ('Austinpussy')
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295178/fullcredits#cast
Not counting it because he's playing himself?
-
IMDB lists 11 acting roles for Spielberg (mostly uncredited) as follows:
2011 Vanilla Sky: Guest at David Aames' Party (uncredited)
1997 Men in Black: Alien on TV Monitors (uncredited)
1997 The Lost World: Jurassic Park: Popcorn-Eating Man (uncredited)
1995 Your Studio and You (short): Backlot Tour Guide (uncredited)
1991 Tiny Toon Adventures (TV series): White Rabbit – New Character Day (1991) … White Rabbit (voice)
1984 Gremlins: Man in Electric Wheelchair (uncredited)
1984 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: Tourist at Airport (uncredited)
1980 The Blues Brothers: Cook County Assessor's Office Clerk
1975 Jaws: Amity Point Lifestation Worker (voice) (uncredited)
1972 Something Evil (TV movie)
1959 The Last Gun (short)
-
Yeah, but these are more like cameos. In Gremlins, for instance, he just passes through driving an electric wheelchair. He actually had a real scene with dialog in The Blues Brothers, which is why I included it.
T
-
That's it!!!
With the addition of this rare double sided Raiders of the Lost Ark Hungarian poster, I now own 1,000 posters on Spielberg (or 1/8 of my poster collection). 33 movies he directed, 66 he produced, 1 he wrote and 1 he acted in (with a couple of lines of dialog). I actually have a dozen more posters on their way, so this number will go higher soon.

I'm actually pretty good at not displaying anything. A friend of mine came to visit last week. I told him that I collected movie posters. He said that's cool. Then I told him 8,000 of them. His next questions were: "Where? How?" Even in my office, he still couldn't see anything. Not a trace of collecting. It helps being OCD.

You do know posters are a visual medium right?

What are those Avatar lenticulars selling for now? :-*
-
$460 on Bruce's... But I don't think you can compare the two. A static blue face vs the moving jaw of a T-Rex... I never bothered with the Avatar lenticular because it is basically a better version of the OS. This one is different. It appeals to the little kid in each one of us. Heck, I first started collecting dinosaurs when I was 6... I've now come full circle.

That one has the date on it, which isn't as cool as the one without it, IMO. It has a cool 3D effect to it, that really can't be appreciated in a picture.

Doh! Sorry 'bout that.
And yes, it's thick. It weights more than 15 lbs.
Holy cow! I had no idea! Are all lenticulars like that???
-
No. Ring 2 can be rolled. Lost World cannot. I have 2 The Day After Tomorrow, one is super thick, the other one can be rolled. So they can be printed different ways even for the same movie. They look the same, though, so I don't really know what the difference is. In general, I am not a big fan of lenticulars. If I get them for free, like all the ones below, fine, but otherwise, not my thing. Because of Spielberg, Jurassic Park is the first one I spent money on.

That's what I thought. I could've sworn the NBC lenticular was not thick like that.
Thanks so much for those examples. Very informative. I'm also curious at to why the different materials for the same end result.
Great addition for a Spielberg collection! thumbup

I have a Ring 2 lenticular that was rolled...I left it flattening for over a year and when I took it out to look at it, it sprung back into exactly the same rolled shape! :D I don't think that sucker will ever be flat again.
Love that new JP lenticular, it looks very dynamic, a great addition to the Spielberg vault, T.

Thanks so much for those examples. Very informative. I'm also curious at to why the different materials for the same end result.
Great addition for a Spielberg collection! thumbup
Depends on which NBC lents your are talking about. The original release ones are thick. The 3D re-releases are the thin version.

A year and 3 months later, I finally added another 100 posters to my Spielberg collection which now counts 1,100 posters connected to a single individual. It's getting increasingly harder to find new gear.

1,100 posters is truly awe-inspiring. But do you still need this?

Yes Bruce, there is always more. I still need a bunch of them, and I know exactly which ones, but I'm not going to spend a ridiculous amount of money to get them.

Which leads me to ask... What would be the largest collection of posters anyone has ever acquired on a single individual, be it a movie star or a director?

I placing my bet on 1100. :)

I have juts under 300 posters on Ray Chandler (counts lobby cards as 1 each, not a set as 1) and an additional 200 stills
T has more Spielberg than I have Chandler I'm sure.
he should have gotten one more item delivered this week at least, from personal knowledge

Ha!!! Thanks Rich for making me count my sets... I have 177 lobby card sets for a total of 1,526 cards on Spielberg.
So that's a grand total of 2,449 items on SS.
And yes, I got your surprise and finally opened the package yesterday. Very nice. Thanks man.

wanna buy an ET shirt I have signed by S.S. ? lol its actually signed by his sister Sue Spielberg. Sue a family friend gifted it to my sister when she was little. shes 22 now and we finally told her it was forged by Sue instead of Steven lol. and she also just realized her autographed picture with Stevens signature is simply printed on the still. had us all cracking up tonight.

I think that's an interesting question. I've always wondered how many posters some people may have for a single title. I think my highest is for 'Alice In Wonderland', not sure how many though.

There's a one screen movie house (built in the 50s) within a stone's throw of my home.. It's called the Oaks and they've been doing a summer midnight film festival for years. Every year they make up some kind of posters and sell them...
This one was limited to 21 copies and I'm pretty sure they still have a few for sale at the theater (they're like $5 or $10 bucks.) LMK if you'd want one for your collection and I'll see if they have any left for you.

After all this time collecting Spielberg crap, pieces I have never seen before keep showing up at my door step, courtesy of my good buddy Matt. Thanks again.

Sweet poster T.
Matt has it going on.

T was lucky I was in a generous mood for this one... I don't even have a copy for myself! Could be one of the best posters for the film me thinks...
And damn those Hungarians! I still don't understand why their posters are so friggin' rare. This poster was printed in 1982 and it's the first and only copy I've even heard of. T's picture for this one will probably be the only one on the internet. Insanity.
-

...with this Japanese B1 I got from another forum member... Schan. Equally rare I believe. I love the fact that they used Jaws, Close Encounters and Spielberg to promote 1941.

I actually sat down and looked at all of my favorite more modern films 70's onward trying to figure out what was the common thread among them. It may not be the only reason why I like them but all but two of my favorites I noticed all had music done by John Williams. A brilliant composer and conductor imo. Drove up to Boston to watch him and the Boston pops more than once.

Ford & Spielberg Return for 'Indiana Jones 5' in 2019
by Brad Brevet
March 15, 2016
Walt Disney Pictures has announced Harrison Ford will return to the big screen as Indiana Jones for a fifth Indiana Jones adventure, set for a July 19, 2019 release. Along with Ford, Steven Spielberg will be directing the as-yet Untitled Indiana Jones film with franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall producing.
"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios in a press release. "It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."
The Indiana Jones franchise began in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, which has brought in over $248 million since its June 1981 release, which includes several re-releases as well as an IMAX release in 2012 that brought in over $3 million.
Subsequent releases included 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. All told the franchise has brought in nearly $1 billion domestically and nearly $2 billion worldwide, not adjusted for inflation.
The untitled feature is currently the only film set for July 19, 2019 and will come one week after Marvel's Inhumans.
-
Ford will be 77 when that film comes out. Will he still be able to crack the whip? whip
-
Visual effects :)
I know a few people who worked on Crystal Skull, including one of the producers, and they all say that Lucas was the problem. So now that the hack is out of the picture, I can only hope it gets better.
T
-
Lets hope the stunts that they have a 77 yr old Indie do, will fly.
If Too much over the top, it would be laughable.
-
I honestly think Spielberg + Kennedy + Marshall - Lucas will pull it off.
If anything, it cannot be worse than 4. Or can it?

Hard to know. In all fairness, Ford IS Indie. But in #4, (imho) he felt too a little too old for the part, when it came to many of the stunts. But Ford cant be replaced at this point, so I'm just hoping they dont have him swinging by one arm, from his Whip, over a chasm 1000' deep. If they script it right and adjust for the age factor, it could be another fun romp.
-
I hope he doesn't cark it mid filming

I see it more in like Force Awakens. Ford is there, but not as the lead. Now, don't ask me how, since it is Indiana Jones, but the first movie was called Raiders of the Lost Ark, so they could go back to something where Indiana Jones is one of the Raiders.

I'm not worried about indy's acting chops... I'm worried 'Mutt' is going to be brought back! Doh.gif faint2.gif

1,300 (http://www.eatbrie.com/SS.htm).
Click on the # to see the posters.
Now that's dedication (or pure insanity.) I think it could very well be the largest poster collection in the world on a single individual. Sure, you could collect Hitchcock and have a much more valuable collection, but volume wise, I doubt you would reach 1,300 pieces. And by the way, a lobby card set of 8 is counted as 1, not 8.
I know what I'm still missing, like those 2 Jaws billboards Bruce sold (and a few others), but if you see something that I don't have and that you are willing to part with, please let me know.

An astounding collection! Too bad you don't collect on Jaws 2. If you did, I would have the perfect item for you!

Seeing the recent update of your site, is there any reason why you don't have anything for 'Amblin' ? Just curious.

Not a feature. Just a 20mn short film without a poster. The only known poster is a festival poster.
T

Really? Bruce has sold a few copies of a rerelease poster. Maybe that's the festival poster?

I never intended to buy this poster, since Amblin' is not a feature film, but then your question changed my mind and so I did.
Fun that Spielberg first released film should become my 1,500 movie poster on the director. Also, what I never realized is that Allen Daviau, who would end up working on ET, The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun, did his first DP job on Amblin'.

As a fellow completist I always felt it was an omission not to have it. Glad you picked it up now, even if it only took you 1499 posters to get there ;)
Seriously though, congrats on the Spielberg collection. I can only dream of getting to that number on my Burton collection.
-
I don’t think you can. Spielberg is responsible for over 100 films as either director or exec producer. Burton, not close. And the 1,500 is not including all the DreamWorks movies, a company he owns. Btw, I’m at 1,501 now. Just bought that Thai Gremlins.
T
-
Nice, I saw it on ebay before it was posted on here and wondered if you had it.
People sometimes say they have the only know copy of this and that, and occasionally the largest collection of something or other. Do you think you have the largest collection of Spielberg posters? Maybe hard to say, but you must be at the top.
-
I would say I do. 1,500 pieces on anyone is a pretty big number, especially since a lobby card set of 8 counts for one piece. I own some really hard to find pieces that it took me years to acquire. Case in point, the Thai Gremlins I bought today. I've been looking for a copy for years. For all I know, I could be the only one collecting Spielberg. But I have a special connection to the guy... that I've talked about before.

As some of you may or may not know, one of my cherished sub collection is Spielberg.
It's more than posters to me. I grew up watching his movies in Paris, decided I wanted to live in America because of the world he depicted, went to school in the US based on his personal recommendation, met my wife working at his company (DreamWorks) and worked a few doors down from him for a year (at Amblin).
Still, after collecting more than 1,700 posters from movies he shepherded, a few pieces were eluding me.
One was a Jaws 7-sheet I won a month ago. The others were a bunch of Thai posters I could not find. Well, the search is officially over. Thanks to the help of a few people, one of them who nagged a collector in Thailand for a long time. The four I was after the most were Gremlins, Back to the Future, Goonies and Poltergeist.
As of this morning, Poltergeist is finally mine and I can pretty much, save for a few pieces I can acquire anytime, call my Spielberg collection COMPLETE. Yeah!!!
This is what collecting is all about for me.
Here are the Thai posters...

Congrats! I am always jealous of your Jaws posters.
-
Really fun Thai posters, T! Several of those posters are ones you rarely see - if at all - in the shops and markets in Thailand based on my hunting there. With the popularity of ghosts and the supernatural in Thai culture, I would have thought some of these movies would have been very popular and more posters would exist. It's interesting to me that they are scarce. I still suspect some of the other popular 1980s Thai posters may be reprinted because their supply seemed pretty steady the times I've been there. It's really cool you completed your collection! Okie

Wow! It must feel pretty satisfying to say this sub collection is complete, congratulations! Or are you a bit sad that the 'journey' is at an end?
Those Thai posters are very cool, especially the ET set. I've never seen The Goonies one either.
-
Congratulations, I can only imagine what that must feel like. Those Thai posters are great, although Marty freaks me out a little! Now your collection is complete, do you have a favourite?
-
Thanks all. I'm happy.
I think I should probably post the Jaws 7-sheet here, because that's where it belongs. It's pretty cool, I think.

As far as favorite, no, I don't think I have one. The last one is always the best.
Some posters took me more than 10 years to locate, so that creates a little bit of a bond, but no favorite.
T
-
Or are you a bit sad that the 'journey' is at an end?
Nope. I'm onto the next thing. Still trying to complete my Bardot collection, my Star Wars collection... and I can just start new ones any time I want ;)
I'm actually quite glad that this is in the past now. I'd say that at least 20, maybe 30 pieces are impossible to find or would take years to locate, so I'm glad I don't have to look for them anymore. Like the Jaws above. I don't know how many are out there, but probably no more than a handful. The quest is the fun. When the quest is over, you move on.
T
-
Amazing collection! Those Tai posters have a really take a fun approach to the subjects. Excellent stuff and congrats on the completion.
-
Thanks Test1 for your PM on the Spielberg Thai posters posted above. Although you should post it here. That's what the forum is for.
Yes, some Thai posters are really hard to find, and Gremlins, Goonies, Back to the Future and Poltergeist were a real challenge. But I'm not in a hurry. Everything comes in time. From the information I have been able to gather, there are less than 10 copies in existence of each title, Back to the Future less than 5. But as a completist, numbers don't matter. What matters is to own one.

Sorry! T, did not realize you'd posted a reply, was not ignoring you or anything ;)
I know what you mean, I've only been collecting posters on & off for a few years max and I've relaxed a lot in that time and now don't worry so much if I can't find certain posters anymore, my attitude now is simply if a poster comes along that I've been after then great! but, if not then so be it, when I first started collecting I found it a little frustrating not being able to find certain posters I wanted, but, now I can see half the fun of collecting posters is just seeing what pops up when your not expecting it.
Anyway, congrats again for finding some of your most wanted Thai posters thumbsup.gif

Hahaha that's funny. I went to the beginning of this thread, and 10 years ago, I had 500 posters on Spielberg, and I thought that was a lot. I now have 1,800 and I think it's a lot on a single individual. Let's see in 10 years.

The number of posters in your collection is "HUGE" T, not only would I never be able to afford to buy anywhere near that amount of posters but seriously where on earth do you find the room to store them all, you must live in a mansion or something ;D
I've only got a very small poster collection and it's already tough finding space to store them all properly/safely.
-
I am EXTREMELY organized. I think I've said it before, but if you came to my house, you wouldn't know I collect posters. I don't have a single one on the wall at present time. I did remove the most expensive ones (I set the bar at $500 +) and put them in a storage facility in their own flat file. The cheaper ones (less than $500) are in the garage in more flat files and tubes. Again, you'd be surprised how little room it takes when you're organized. I would not do it otherwise.
T
-
Fair enough T, I also consider myself well organized, but, no matter how organized I am I just simply would not have the room to store a poster collection the size of yours, but good luck to you if your able to manage it ;)
-
Oooooo, Thierry! Those Thais are divine! WOW!! The JAWS is amazing, but the ET trio and the GREMLINS posters really floated my boat as well. Cool.
