Thanks for posting this Mel. I remember reading about it a few months ago. It's in my cart...
-
Thanks Mel, book has been rumored for awhile, glad to see it hit print.

So HE'S the bastid that has the daybill!
-
Is that a Franky daybill? I thought it was an insert...
I'm in love with the French 2p. Go big or go home.

So HE'S the bastid that has the daybill!
AND my argie London After Midnight moron1

That French Frankenstein was in Robert Florey's collection. I met with his widow, and she explained that he wanted one poster each from all his movies, and he had a U.S. poster on ALL except Frankenstein, because Laemmle had cheated him terribly, promising him to let him direct him he gave Laemmle the script, but once he did, Laemmle took him off of it, and to add insult to injury did not credit him for his script!
But he somehow DID get credit on the French poster, which was why Florey had it in his collection! Interestingly, he was a major collector of other types of items, like swords, but the only posters he had were the one each from his movies.
-
I thought the Frankenstein 6-Sheet was the pinnacle of our hobby, that is until I picked this book up...The 3-Sheet for The Mummy is...SPECTACULAR. Wowza! That is art.
-
Man this type of stuff just depresses the hell out of me... Never going to have even one of those pieces...
-
Don't let it bring you down Charlie.
You can always learn playing the guitar, form a metal band, do some gigs until you achieve playing before metallica in a concert, befriend Kirk, make him invite you to his house, kick the crap out of him and while he's unconscious grab all you can and run.

I would never open for Metallica! :P

That's crazy talk Matias... Quit living in a dream world! All Charlie needs to do is to take his restoration hobby pro. Lets say he makes $50 per poster after expenses and time. If he can complete one poster per day and doesn't take any days off for weekends or vacations, in 41 short years he'll have saved up enough to buy Todd F's Dracula on eBay!

NOT HELPING! You forgot inflation, making it a statistical improbability... as I would have to make $61 a day (plus 1.03 annually) just to keep up with it, the inflation alone. So I would have to make $111/day + inflation... :'(
Based on an annual 3% inflation rate at $50/day I will still be $1.76 million short... since the poster will most likely be worth $2.5 million in 2053...
waiting1

Fair enough. If we want to go the restoration route, it's even easier. Become pro, get Kirk's posters for linenbacking. Do some fine reproductions glued to real vintage paper. Keep originals. Return the fakes to Kirk. Just make sure you don't get caught, Haggard style ;)

Anthony sez he's coming back to finish that epic soon...
Great read.
Thanks for re-posting it Neo.
-
His collection is really just stunning... I can't wait for my book to arrive later today.

And on a side note, so that is who bought that incredible Lugosi oil portrait that HA sold!
-
You won't be disappointed Matt. The Posters are all photographed beautifully. And there is a great story (almost like 2 pages long) on how he ended up picking up one of the Styles of The Mummy poster, the only one known to exist. Unfortunately it was laminated, but still...
-

+1 I ordered one too; just to see what he's got...

Cool. pcorn
Great video there, H.C. Mr. Hammett has quite the awesome display. cool1 Probably one of the best in the world for that genre, eh?
-
So who has the greatest horror memorabilia collection? Hammett says he has the "second" greatest collection.
-
Great book! I haven't read through it yet, just browsed.... but wow! Seeing him standing next to that Mummy 3-sheet. Damn. I'm speechless.

Fishler?

Rob Zombie has a nice collection as well.
Sean tracks where the big moves go pretty well.
-
Looking at collections of that magnitude make me want to toss my paper in the dumpster.
-
Very cool that those guys are generous and brave to video their stuff. cool1
Here's another video with some horror stuff, including Mr. Fishler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nx2zuM9isM&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nx2zuM9isM&feature=related)

Depends how you define "greatest" of course but likely Ron Borst.

Some awesome posters there

Got my book yesterday, great stuff.
-
Hammett's Dracula 1S Style C - presumably the only copy left and I'm not sure it's ever been shown before in color:
Bride of Frankenstein 1S - I can't determine what style this is but I've not seen it before:
-
Awesome stuff! Always tried to imagine what that Dracula would look like in full colour. Those eyes really grab you (and the negligee doesn't hurt either ;) )

Next to the teaser, this style was my favorite.
-
Yeah, I believe that picture originated from Poster Mountain (http://www.postermountain.com/form/posters/formatted/252), which restored this poster in 2003.
-
Can't say enough about this book - absolutely worth $25.
Mummy one sheet, only known copy, similar to the three sheet, book says it was found and remains "laminated to a board":
Wax Museum, probably the only one sheet of this:
Frankenstein French:
-
Does he have the 3 sheet too?
Honestly had no clue another style one sheet even existed! The fact it is laminated is quite something...
-
I could be wrong but I think it means it was stuck to a board with a coating, more like a varnish than laminated, again I could be wrong.
-
Got the book yesterday and it is indeed very enjoyable. It is very much a fanbook and those are fun most of the time. I liked the toys the best (especially the Great Garloo), because I've never seen those before. I am a bit jaded in regards to Universal lobby cards, pretty much seen them and most of the time they aren't really spectacular. That's why I liked the other book I got even better! A fanbook also but with almost fanatical encyclopedic dedication. It's a bit higher in price but definitely worth it:
MUCHAS GRACIAS SENOR LOBO is a memorabilia book dedicated to Paul Naschy and it is great. Check for details: http://www.creepy-images.com/ (http://www.creepy-images.com/)
-
yeah cant wait for my copy of Thorstens book to arrive, I have his first book which I thought was good enough, but this new one sounds awsome.
-
Mummy 3 sheet is there as well. Kong 6 sheet, it just goes on and on. Jaw dropping stuff.

This is correct Ari, it is not laminated.
We have talked about this one-sheet several times (at least over at NSFGE), so it's existence shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Re: Mystery of the Wax Museum - there were copies of this poster was in the Royal Theater collection, so while not unique it is still rare.
-
This is correct Ari,
I shouldn't doubt myself, and you others should learn to trust in offal.

Mine just arrived, if anyone can outdo this as far as personal passion to a particular subject I will be surprised. What a book, so thick and heavy and image heavy. Awesome stuff, any wolfman fan must grab it. Or if you like European exploitation.

Ok Ari & Wim, you convinced me to order one.

You won't regret it, there's even breasts.

I like even breasts

Even? Odd?
I like 'em any old way as long as they line up...

Thanks for sharing the boobs Ted, I appreciate it.
Got my Senor Lobo in the post.
It is a very nice book indeed, quite an art work of its own. I recommend it even though I am not much into horror, the images are still very interesting to look at and the exploitation images too! Mum is visiting and looked over my shoulder while reading it and called me "sicko"... Highly recommended ;D
It is very different to my other more conservative poster books like Reynold Brown. It also has quite a number of Spanish posters, Italians. It is written half in German and half in English. It looks well made.
-
It's quite a feat putting together such a collection huh? Value aside, just the time tracking down so much Naschy paper. Thorsten should be proud.
My favourite is the poster that borrows images from mark of the devil, oh exploitation, where have you gone?
Glad your mother was impressed, maybe pass it on as an early Xmas gift ;)

NYTimes interviewed Hammett about his new book: (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/movies-memorabilia-and-metallica/)
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/movies-memorabilia-and-metallica/
Here's a portion of the interview:
Q. A big section of the book is devoted to the movie posters in your collection. What do you find appealing about the horror poster?
A. The movie posters are the items that I love the most. I think they are super beautiful. I love what they represent. A lot of the stuff from the ’20s had a very expressionistic look to it. I’m really into German Expressionism. I love “Nosferatu” and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” and “Faust.”
A lot of the posters from the ’30s are also beautiful. At the time horror movies were a relatively new genre, and when the big studios designed posters for them, there was no formula. They used the same approach for a horror movie poster as they would a western or romance. They used lush colors. It was very vibrant. There’s a romantic quality to the approach to these posters that you don’t get nowadays. The technique they used is a lost art.
Q. Do you remember the first poster you got?
A. “The Day of the Triffids.” It’s a film about giant man-eating plants from space that come in on meteorites. What happens is there’s this explosion and it blinds everyone on the face of the earth. Then these man-eating plants stalk humans. I was sequestered inside the house and saw it on TV. I saw it when I was 5. I don’t know if I’d show my 5-year-old this movie.
Q. Is your collection on display in your home or do you keep it in storage?
A. I really am not the kind of person to store it. I have to display it and have it seen. I also have a shortage of wall space, so what I do is rotate stuff. I’ll put something up on the wall and after three months I’ll take it down and put something else in its place.
-

Sounds like someone I know hmmmmm.....
-
How can he possibly (comparatively) have a lack of wall space!?
-
So who has the greatest horror memorabilia collection? Hammett says he has the "second" greatest collection.
I know he's not on the same scale in terms of posters, but Rob Zombie has quite the collection of horror memorabilia. Perhaps he is talking about him. The other possibility is the Ackerman estate maybe.....
-
Nah to Zombie and Ackerman was flogged off. the consensus would be Borst.
Although I vote for me.

Great video!
But interesting to see that those poster displays from the book were not from his house... they were sets specifically setup for the photo shoot!
-
Probably need to watch that one twice. Cool.
-
It is good to be king.
It must be great to have the resources to indulge in a hobby like Hammett has.

Fantastic, If only I had the funds....
I'm not sure about his obsession with Chris though.... wynk

As mentioned on NS4, the TV Show "Toy Hunter" showed some snippets of Hammett's poster collection displayed in his house in San Francisco. The host tried to sell Hammett a run-of-the-mill combo poster (the yellow poster shown below) and Hammett was understandably not very impressed. The camera did not really focus on the poster collection, so I wouldn't bother watching the show unless you like monster toys:
http://www.travelchannel.com/video/toy-haunter
(http://www.posternirvana.com/0DNE2/2013-10/Hammett.png)
*****
The show also showed the poster barn of Dennis _____, who is "pict_res" on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/pict_res/m.html?_dmd=2&_ipg=192&_sop=12&_rdc=1). Dennis (the man wearing glasses) claimed to have over 100,000 posters and I don't doubt it:

Me spies the Aussie one sheet for Mad Love ;D
-
And I spies Chris in two of those pics at the top...
Did you visit also Chris.. ;)
-
Yes - unfortunately I was tricked into posing for a self-portrait and then encased in wax! You'd think Vincent Price was there too...
-
Attention Poster Nerds:
I believe this is the best image of the Mummy three sheet available on the Internet. (I took a picture from Hammett's book, resized it to correct proportions, and removed Hammett's hand and guitar in Photoshop. Obviously my recreation of the covered space on the poster does not exactly match the original but I gave it my best "guess").
Now who can win eternal poster nerd glory and tell me WHERE this three sheet was found?

It has its own adventurous story to go along with it in the book...

Yes, Hammett's book has been out a while, but I just happened to trip across this vid he made, back in 2012, most likely as the book was hitting the market. A GREAT companion piece to to the book, and to listen (and see) how it all came together. Let alone the posters and other pieces he has in his collection. cool1

Hammet just organized his own horror/metal festival in San Francisco this weekend:
Kirk von Hammett's Fear FestEvil
http://www.fearfestevil.com/
-
So how was it?
-
yeah I had a booth but was unable to attend
they'll roll me over to the next show as they were able to resell my booth.
my understanding is that they had lots of attendees and it was lots of fun, according to my good buddy Bill.
I'll be there next year for sure

Another book from him would be cool.
I was wondering if Mr. Johnny Ramone had any posters, and found this article.

Ramone, co-founder the Ramones and guiding force behind the punk rock band movement, died recently at the age of 55 and left a world-class collection of original movie posters...'Included in this wonderful collection are some of the greatest posters from top genres,' said Grey Smith, Heritage's director of Vintage Poster sales. 'Such classics as 'Frankenstein', 'Bride of Frankenstein',' and 'Dracula' are included in this group from the famous Universal horror series. These are the most sought after titles in the entire poster-collecting hobby.

Thanks a lot Brandon. This is actually very interesting to know. I have been searching HA for some of his posters. I quite like Los Ramones! Thanks for sharing this info thumbsup.gif

It's impressive how much classic stuff Mr. Ramone acquired. Maybe there are some more cool photos on the internet.
The Ramones were one of the best. I was lucky to see them at a rad show in the 90s. So much energy, and right when they got done with one song, the bassist, Dee Dee Ramone, would yell "1-2-3-4!" and they would start the next song. Good times. 8)

You know it, Brandon. The Ramones were awesome...
As you mention, it would be great to find others from his collection online. HA, too, may have specified those, in their descriptions, similar to those indicated as being from the Nick Cage Collection or the Berwick Collection.

Didn't Ramone have the HEAVILY restored Frankenstein 1/2 sheet?

It's impressive how much classic stuff Mr. Ramone acquired. Maybe there are some more cool photos on the internet.
There's a lot of pics of his collection of signed stills in an issue of Psychotronic Video Magazine. Can't remember wich issue now. I'll check when I get home.

Hey M,
Did you ever find that article with the signed stills?

Linda, his wife, had a site somewhere, forgot what it was called, with his stuff. I managed to get a halfsheet for Rocketship X-M and a lobby card for The Werewolf from his collection. Of course I wanted the FREAKS pinhead lobbycards, but they proved to be too desirable. In the great Ramones-documentary END OF THE CENTURY there are a few interview clips with Johnny in front of his wall of lobbies including FREAKS with Linda out of shot commenting on Johnny's reminiscings of his troubles with Joey - Linda used to be Joey's girlfriend-. Great stuff.

hmm perhaps, though I seem to recall a FREAKS 1/2 sheet, but I could be wrong, or both could have been heavily restored., Sean would know.

The original oil painting of Bela (and originally owned by Lugosi) is top notch, too.
