Truly fantastic art, imo, of Laurel and Hardy on this rare, possibly only known to exist, 24 sheet done for The Flying Deuces (1939). thumbsup.gif
Seller mrs.miniver wants only $85K for it, but that's a different story. ;)

HOLY BABY JESUS that is awesome, but why $85k?

This seller always has things listed at uber high prices. Just check them out on the bay:

Does this guy ever sell anything, like ever? His prices are so beyond ridiculous sometimes I wonder if he even owns the pieces he is offering, knowing very well that no sane collector will ever bid on his shit.
T
-
Looks like he sold about 8 things in the last year (or that received feedback). But all the sales/items on his feedback page are marked as "Private" -- so no way to know what specifically was sold.

Good luck to her. I wouldn't want those 2 any near me..let alone at that size.
They are scary.

Scary?
Why? Is it the caricature art that is creepy to you? dontknow.gif

I always found those two uhno creepy and scary. Not my cup of tea. .

What do you think his game is, Ari? Does he own the posters he sells, does he actually expect to sell them at the listed price or is it a front for something else?

Hes probably trying to sell it on contract, I seen 2 or 3 sellers before trying to float it around online.
-
I think he has them or access to them at least. Sean or rich would know. But it's Matt Shapiro I believe. He was or is on mopo. I guess it's just advertising of some sort. I doubt e expects to sell via ebay but maybe off ebay.

Whatever he is, I think he's giving this hobby a bad name. Imagine a newbie who doesn't know anything about posters and sees his ridiculous prices. That would deter anyone from joining.

That's for sure. Plenty of profiteers out there.

Nice pair there, Mike.
Are they being displayed at present? ;D

I've been thinking of putting the Superman up. Pics to come on that one. I actually do have one wall I could do it on but it gets hit with direct sunlight every day.

I wish I could take a pic of my King Kong 1976 billboard poster. I have no place to set it out

to answer T's previous question, he should own most or all of what he sells. I don't know if he does or does not own the L&H specifically, but he's not usually a front for anyone I can think of.
going further, sometimes it's necessary to take an objective look at how other people and things work outside of yourself to understand the deal.
For instance, if it doesn't matter to his bank account if he does or does not sell anything, how would that affect his outlook on prices and what he is or is not trying to do.
as was pretty much being said by myself and also by Sean in that other thread is that everything in this hobby does not fit into a buttonhole the way it works in other hobbies.
moreover, what something is worth to one person doesn't have to fit with what it's worth to someone else.
if you were to contact him and say "Boy, I sure would like to buy that 24-sheet from you, but damn the price is so high" all he's going to do is answer you "Find another copy. happy collecting"......

Question - are there larger sizes for posters or this woudl be it? Just curious, I read some sort of description about a poster used outside a building and it was smaller than 24...
i think the ones used at IMAX are larger.. no? yes? dunno? don't care? what? wt-flop?
-
I have seen a few that were over thirty feet long but not many. There have also been some really huge banners created instead of using paper for the huge freeway signs outside of places like LA. Star Wars made several for use there I think to promote Star Tours at Disney years ago. Do not remember the size but they were much larger than 24 sheets.
-
Thanks. That's very helpful. I saw some pics of large banners so wasn't sure if they will qualify as posters (paper made) and i was curious to know a bit more about the sizes.
Very useful. Thanks again thumbsup.gif

I am about to start photographing (in sections) the 24 sheet for the 35mm (non-roadshow) release of SPARTACUS.

Posters larger than 24-sheets surely existed (see below), but they wouldn't have been put out by the studio. They were likely just 1-off type posters. As Undead said, there were a few odd sizes like 30-sheets and 7-sheets, but they were short-lived and very similar in size to the existing 6-sheets and 24-sheets.

Great photos!!.
Thanks Matt. Very helpful. I guess I was asking because I wasn't sure if those were "posters " thought these were made of a different material. I gather most of these huge posters must have been "custom made" so they are quite unique..but perhaps not very collectable.
Thanks again. Really useful.

I can't find a good close-up photo, but you see stuff like that in NYC all the time. They are usually printed on some sort of semi-transparent material (maybe perforated vinyl?) so it doesn't block all the light for those living/working on the other side. As below, it's really common to see them on construction sites.

Looks like about a 360 sheet! Roughly (5) 24-sheets high x (3) 24sheets wide, no? ;D
-
I am wondering if the DTEST and Johnny Guitar on that same building might be painted as opposed to being massive posters?
-
Well that modern Batman almost looks painted so quite possibly!
-
Now I am wondering how you can possibly pull off proper perspective on something so massive when you are working on it up close in a very small area?!
-
Is this really painted?
Doing something this size and in that detail would take weeks, if not a couple months to complete (from literal start to finish).
Amazing work, truly, if it is painted... but I suspect something a little less labor intensive (a 100% "guess comment," here, btw). :)

Amazing, Jason.
And to think all that work and artistry is painted over and obliterated (on that particular building) over and over again....
Truly spectacular art and artists, when hand painted on that kind of scale.

Bloody hell. As one piece of linen or, 24?
-
Thanks for locating an image Jeff. The 6-sheet has a white background - surely there weren't two versions?
Mark

There were not two 24-sheets. Coloration frequently differs on images of poster in the pressbooks. Mostly the posters reproduced in the pressbook are monochrome.

Very nice. I think the C/U images are amazing.
And MPDB did go down but it also morphed into and became CineMaterial. This happened a few years ago, if I'm remembering right, they even sent out an email at the time, explaining what happened to all who had joined and created an account with them. I think the 2 guys that started MBDB had a parting of ways.

These posters came from MovieArt Austin. And they are still on display at the Alamo Drafthouse on Anderson Lane in Austin. MovieArt Austin has the largest selection of U.S. 24 sheets of any dealer in the US. I took this photo.

What kind of collector/entity buys 24 sheets? Considering the impossible size, enormous restoration costs, buyers have to be:

Not necessarily crazy. Many collectors own posters that they have no intention of displaying. I sold a THUNDERBALL 24 to a collector that had it backed and it is up in his work area, a large space to be sure. We have sold 24 sheets to theaters, bars, law firms, restaurants and museums, as well as individuals. For completists who want everything on a film, 24 sheets are often the last poster they acquire - because they are scarce in the overall scheme of things.

Yes, I would have loved a 24 sheet to complete my Paths of Glory collection (with no desire on my part to display it) but no posters are known to have survived.

Just a few of these remain. I have counted maybe five. The first film of Elvis Presley. This 24 sheet will be auctioned at Heritage in Dallas in the upcoming signature sale in July.
Full disclosure: I have one of these on my website, so, of course, I hope it does well.

Hi Kirby,
Have you pulled this one out from the vault yet to take a look at it (or one of the sections) to see if it is, in fact, all in color?
Looking forward to whenever you might be able to take some snaps of the poster itself. :)

I have looked at the panels - one of two of them - and the poster is in color. I still have this poster.

Out of curiosity do you recall how much you sold it for? A range will do if you dont want to provide an exact number... ;D

Yes, it was sold as part of a package of nine 24-sheets which sold for $12,945.00. The year was 1997. The poster was evaluated by us at that time at $2500.00.

Hi,
There are some absolutely beautiful posters in this thread. Thank you all for sharing : )
I am curious though, so I have a few basic questions...
(My apologies if these questions have been answered already. I tried searching the forum but could not find anything).
1.) How big, (approximately), in feet, is a 24 sheet?
2.) Are all 24-sheets folded the same/come in the same amount of panels? I ask because some of the posts I've seen on this thread you can really see a lot of fold lines on some of the posters. But then there are other 24 sheets where the fold lines are barely noticeable. So I just thought maybe different companies and/or different era's, folded differently. (Or maybe it's just the lighting of the photo?)
3.) If I ever bought a 24 sheet, should I assume it will have a lot of tape marks or pin holes throughout the back of it? If not, if someone could please enlighten me I would appreciate it- I bring this up because I'm trying to visualize how a movie theater, (past or present), displays a 24 sheet so beautifully that it looks so seamless. And I can't : (
Thanks,
Michael
-
24 sheets are usually, but not always, made up of four columns - an A,B,C and D column and 3 rows of panels. A1, B2, C3, D1 etc. etc. So, usually there are twelve separate panels which are joined together to make 9x20 foot poster. Of course there are variances over the years. Earlier 24 sheets might have different configurations and sometimes the posters were printed in a different format. But in my experience the aforementioned scheme is the usual case and one that was used for many 24 sheets during the 50s and 60s. But like everything else in movie posters there is the exception that proves the rule. Most 24 sheets that are available for sale as a collectible today were never used. The normal drill for 24 sheet display was to paste the 24 sheet to a billboard panel. When the advertising campaign was over, the advertising company would sell the space to another advertiser and that 24 sheet was simply pasted over the existing one. Periodically all this would be scraped off the billboard panel and the whole process would start over again. One reason why the attrition rate for 24 sheets is as high as it is is that after the very first first run of a film, the economic model to use a 24 sheet for commercial gain was done. After the first run of the picture, there would be little use for a 24 sheet. And so one can conclude without too much doubt that these posters were thrown out by the exchanges. They took up room and they were never going to be used again. Fortunately some have escaped that fate. MovieArt has probably the most U.S. 24 sheets of any dealer. Many of the images of 24 sheets that you have seen at Heritage, for example, have been put together in photoshop for a seamless look. Linen-backing a 24 sheet would attempt to capture that seamlessness. Emovieposter photographs the whole poster much as they do their other posters and thus you can see the native folds more easily. Kirby,
Have you ever had a Godzilla (1956) 24-sheet?
I found one listed for sale in a catalog from an Oklahoma dealer in the early 70s, but have never been able to find out if it's still around or not.
-
I have never seen or heard of a 24 sheet for GODZILLA.
-
I would love to see that one. Looked for a copy quickly and came across this. May be parts of it cut up for a display.
-
I used to have a photo of one on display (in TN maybe?), but not sure what I did with it.
Although the Godzilla art from the 24-sheet was also made available separately as a 9-ft standee, I think Loew's made their own custom display for the premiere in April, 1956.

So is this pic a Godzilla 24 sheet that is on the marquee of that theater? Or parts of one used and then backlit?
-
No, this is not a 24 sheet. This is the marquee of a theater playing the film. This is an elaborate display on a marquee, probably concocted with the assistance of an advertising display company. No one would use a 24-sheet as a marquee. Kirby

I don't recall that, specifically, no. Too long ago. This was probably 1991 at the December Auctions that happened yearly at that time.

Twenty-four sheet for A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE (1958).
This is not on our website. Condition is quite good. I thought I'd post to note the passing of JOHN GAVIN. He was directed in this film by Douglas Sirk. The film was based on a novel by the author of "All Quiet on the Western Front", the great pacifist book of the 20th Century. A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE was Remarque's novel of World War II.

Hi Kirby, I really like the rhino giving a bit of "Hatari" to The Duke's overcrowded wagon! I looked up more info on Wikipedia on the actress Elsa Martinelli and found her two husbands' names a little two end of the spectrum:
1. Count Franco Mancinelli di San Vito
2. Willy Rizzo
For all I know maybe Elsa called her first husband Frankie Vito. I'll have to watch some of her films as I don't readily recall her performances. Do you remember her?

A 24 sheet from he 1956 version of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lolllobrigida. It's mounted on a wall in makeup artist, Tom Savini's home.
