I love used movie stores... Picked up some premium blu-ray and a 6 DVD Jimmy Stewart set... I saw the Rare Breed a few nights ago on cable and am crushing on Maureen O'Hara; even at 46 she was still stunning... And who knew there was a girl in Forbidden Planet? Can't wait to see that one! I've also held out long enough on Marilyn films; ever since I tried Some Like it Hot I have just been passing them by...

Seeing Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty this week. thumbup
-
The Hobbit is the only movie I have yet to see. We've seen about 3 movies a week for the past 2 months, and The Hobbit is the last one. For some reasons, though, I am not dying to see it. It doesn't appeal to me the way the LotR trilogy did. So I might end up missing it.

Did you like Django Unchained?

Geez, I could post my nightly work load here at the beginning of my day... but I won't. But, I do get to watch The Patriot tonight so that's cool. However, Smokey and the Bandit Part Three isn't sitting to well, we'll see...

I spent my day with Mr Darcy and I will now be spending the night with him. A gentleman afterdark. BBC Pride and Prejudice. The whole lot. All of it. Because I say so.

Hoping to see THE TERMINATOR tonight at the DRIVE IN....
One problem.
I don't drive.
And seems so far nobody is too excited like I am to take me.
I never miss driving, until today.
Anyway still early, pray to Arnie someone will realise how fun drive ins are, otherwise I might ride my skateboard and take a transistor radio.

Ari, why don't you drive? :-\
I've never wanted to drive, when my wife was oregant I gave in, and did for a few years, when I moved to Sydney I didn't need and couldn't afford a car, public transport I'd great, and parking is either impossible or expensive. So I didn't renew my licence for 15 or so years. Now I have to do the whole exam stuff again and I usually don't miss driving. I hate it, don't like cars in general. Plus I'm still in a Sydney mindset, where you might walk if it's 30 minutes etc, in the country people drive if it's around the corner, and a ten minute walk that's jot in the beach or in the bush is unheard of.
I might have to though to get a job, one guy a few weeks ago wouldn't hire me because I don't drive. But it's stupid because the work is less than ten minutes walk from my house. He couldn't understand I would just walk and thinks I would be relying on lifts from people. Strange mindset that I am having my own private rebellion against.
Never went to a drive in. It sounds like fun though. ;)
They are great, we went often as a kid, my parents would put us kids under blankets and pretend we were under four years old to get in free. Always a double feature, with the kids playing on slides and swings in the break or during a boring movie. We had three here when I was a kid, plus a cinema and the population was about 13,000 so that's how popular they were.
-
They are great, we went often as a kid,
For the year when I was 9, we went almost every saturday night to a movie. The majority was at the drive inn.
Great times they were!
-
I always wondered if you can actually hear anything in a drive in, though i suppose it is all about the outdoor experience, it must be fun.
When I was a child we used to go to the church's square in the summer. All outdoors and the most uncomfortable stools i can recall. Our priest had and old projector and an old white blanket and really weird films, i swear i watched there 'The blood splattered bride'' and 'Rintintin'. And all sort of weird religious films. All good fun till the day the blanket caught fire. Now that was fun.
-
Usually there are speakers you attach to your window, or you tune your car radio into the drive ins frequency, sound isn't a problem at all.
-
Like many of us old-timers on this board, I just about grew up in a drive-in.
There are still some around here in central NY, but I imagine they are a far cry from the experience of yesteryear.
I am looking forward to this.
I have just emailed the releasing company to find out when and where it will be seen.

Very effective trailer! I just watched it in October and I want to see it again now :)
Kino did a blu-ray restoration and it apparently looks like mush... the boosted everything so much that the grain is gone and it looks like badly compressed satellite HD. Luckily they included an un-doctored scan of the neg as well... warts, grain and all. That's the version I want to see!

Thanks for the link Harry, I'll be picking it up soon...
Until then, Yvonne's on a Girly night out so I'm giving both the Count Yorga's a re-run. I haven't seen them in over 15 years... Wish me luck. :-\
-
The best version of White Zombie I have come across is the "Roan restoration" - I have an .avi of it but believe was released to DVD

Raining, cold, ugly outside. Staying in now, gym later. Will be watching guess what?
Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin',

Mermaids: The Body Found (2012). Anybody heard of it or watched it? I saw the very end of it on on Animal Planet a few weeks ago. I checked to see if it's online and I (shockingly) saw at a couple sites that it is a "mockumentary" :'( and a "fictional documentary" :-\.

My father and I watched an Aussie mockumentary about a ghost that haunted a family home. It was very well made, sadly I had read about it and knew it was fake, but it fooled my father all the way throug, until the end credits, when the actors names came up, and he shouted out WHAT THE FUCK!

No offense meant. I always trip up his name -- not due to it's origin, but to the mental block I have from the junk he produces.

Now what will go with a knackered Plumber, and a curry.... Some kind of Submarine film I think. ;)

Scratch that, I'm going with some Black & White stuff, Rosa has got me in the mood for some Casablanca... Well it has been a few months since I last watched.. :D

Really? I think The Sixth Sense was really the only successful one (as long as you didn't know the twist) and Unbreakable was an interesting take on the superhero. Signs was mediocre but has a great soundtrack.
-
I think I liked The Sixth Sense better the second time when I did know it, because I was watching to see how much he "cheated" to trick you, and I didn't think he cheated at all!
-
Actually, that's a good point, Bruce. I did the same. :)
From what I recall I agree. He didn't cheat that much, but he did make good use of cuts / transitions (eg, Bruce and Toni in the living room).
-

Don't know why I like it. But I do. I put it down to Joaquim Phoenix ..he is just ...great :)
-
My trouble with the village, or the main or, was the twist was so obvious it hurt, and it would have been much better without the twist,
-
Yes, well put. Tho there are lots of films with the same problem that seem to get away with it...
-
I must admit that UNBREAKABLE was enjoyable.
But, I think every one of his other movies would've been better as 1/2 hour Twilight Zone episodes.
-
Worst twist EVER....
Boxing Helena
I don't like censorship, but that film either needs the end cut, or just ban the whole bloody terrible embarrassing, insulting pile of tripe.

The African Queen again tonight, watching it for zillion time, and breaking my PB.. I don't know how many times I've watched this film. Tonight, down the river with Mr Alnut.....

Wow, why watch The African Queen a zillion times? I watched Dirty Dancing about 15 times just for the watermelons. I think one out of every two movies I have watched was Dirty Dancing. Do I get ejected from the forum now?
-
If it wasn't you Steve. I'd ban you from NSFGE.
I did go on my first date to dirty dancing though.
-
Watermelons? Hahahahaaha well, glad to read that you have a soft spot.. :) African Queen is just great, and you should watch it.. thou no watermelons, just water ;)
Now, Ari, Dirty dancing for a first date? dear oh dear.. dear oh dear... dear oh dear... watermelons for a first date... dear oh dear..... :o
-
Wasn't my idea, she asked me.
She left me for one of my friends a few days later, so I guess my obvious "joy" of the movie didn't impress her. Then I met a woman years later and married her.. And guess what her favourite movie was. Gee I have all the luck.
Anyway Steve maybe I can hook you up with one of them?
-
Blimey.. Dirty Fancy...

58 Harry, and Rosa there's more extras than you can shake a stick at, I'll post the back of the box in the morrow... :D
-
Oooo... it's on blu ray? Is it region free?
-
Unfortunately not Matt, which is crazy as surely they would make more money doing so.
It's a disc that would make me buy another player for it. When I say disc, it's a 3 disc set, and if your an anorak about it like me, there's plenty of extras, two versions of the film, and the last 4 Japanese reels where they took the extra footage from for the recent restoration. They only found the last few reels from the Jap version, just incase your wondering... but anything extra is a bonus this many years on.

I will need to pick this up, too.

Can I keep the extras ??? In my humble opo, extras is what sets a Blu ray apart...good restoration and sound quality should be there too ...!!
-
Er....you can keep what you like.... :-\....

I haven't been following this restoration jazz on Dracula.
Are there marked differences between the BFI and Hammer versions?

I wonder if they will do something similar for the Mummy (1959)???

I hate extras. I never, or rarely, watch them, no interest I'm afraid.
Sometimes, maybe once a year if I can't sleep but my eyes are tired I listen to audio commentary for a film I know very well, but really I just think is all shit.
Especially the wanky making of featurettes for newer films, blarrgghhh

Oooo... it's on blu ray? Is it region free?
For anyone who is interested, Oppo blu-ray players are some of the best on the market with customer service that is second to none. Mine started having some issues a few months back where it would not eject correctly. I sent it in for service, and they had it back to me fixed and cleaned with upgraded firmware free of charge to include return shipping w/in 3 days of me sending it!
Anyway, to get to the actual point, there is a component you can get and easily install (even for the technically inept) that will make them zone free or zone specific for blu-ray or DVD with a couple of buttons on the remote. There are other zone free blu players out there, but their reliability can be suspect.
-
I'm in two minds weather to buy another Blu player, to cover the region A stuff, but I keep thinking 4K must just be around the corner. Anyone any ideas when this will be a sensibly priced option..?
-
Big night planned at The New Beverly in LA for me tonight....
The Dark Corner and Dark Passage. Maybe they will lift my "Dark" mood :P

Very cool. Great minds and all that...lol
On my schedule of events, too. The beverly cinema.. they dont make 'em like that anymore, either. fun times.
And a good double bill.

Interesting. I am just the opo! I bought the Blu Ray Criterion Edition, the John Ford's Stagecoach just to be able to enjoy the extras. Ah, that wonderful BBC interview with John Ford in his ever so weird mood. John Ford interview? You kidding? Boy did i enjoy watching that...I bought the DVD version too just to make sure I was able to watch it on my player.
Long live John Ford....

I Like that film...
-
Gravity was excellent. The script was soso, and to be honest, I kept imagining a better actress in the Bullock role (who does nothing for me), maybe a Cate Blanchett, but the movie was so well done and intense that that didn't really matter. Big thumbs up, see it in 3D on the biggest screen you can find!

Nosferatu (1922) at KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Thursday October 31, 2013 at 8:00. The Alloy Orchestra, a 3 man musical ensemble, is going to be playing their score during the silent film. http://www.kimotickets.com/event/150651 (http://www.kimotickets.com/event/150651)

Good deal. I saw the Alloy during their last go round with Metropolis. Despite the overuse of occasionally monotonous musical phrases, they added a lot to the experience and I would see them anytime.

Seeing Metropolis with those guys must've been really cool, Archie. I'm really stoked to see Nosferatu tomorrow night.

My turn to ask for a movie I watched when I was a kid... Tried to find it desperately using Google but failed
My bro used to watch it and only have few images in my mind making it difficult to find.
The story is about a band of guys who hijacked a plane in order to broadcast an illegal shortwave rock station. From the 70s/early 80s I guess ??
Any idea

The only thing that comes to mind about something like that is Pirate Radio. But I know that is not it if it came out in the 70's or 80's. I am sure someone will chime in about what it is.

I'm torn. I love everything Coen Bros, but I avoid FX/Fox like the plague. The fact that Oliver Platt is in it may be the difference...

This movie is a joke
I completely disagree. It's a very interesting, and very well done movie.

Hey Brandon.. i happened to catch the premiere episode by chance,.. and was pleasantly surprised (in a good way). :D
Seems that from time to time, a film that has later been made into a series can be weak and lack a lot of "solid meat on the bone."
-
So...was it good?
Sorry!! Just read this. Yes, it was excellent, a real must if you are an Ebert fan, which I was/am. He was my gateway into seeking out great films. I miss him.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The film in this case is a classic, and I agree that the premiere is pretty darn good. The shots in Detroit at the beginning are neat, and overall it's a cool, slight alteration from the film. It looks like the story is going to be cool to see, as it progresses.
Looking forward to the rest of the series. 8)

The season premiere of 12 Monkeys (2015) on SyFy.
Is this still good? We need a new series to watch.
Done True Detective, GoT, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Homeland, SoA...of course the classics like Sopranos, the Wire, Band of Brothers etc.
Cable TV bites but we got nothing on deck. Suggestions?

Very good. It's a little different than the classic film, and it will be cool to see how it all goes.

just booked ticket to this (on the 31st in Melbourne). I don't have high hopes, but screw it, I will give it a go, and while I am there will be delivering poster orders to melbourne customers (saves them postage- I get to meet face to face and its just more fun).

Brave man, that Ari.
I do not have the intestinal fortitude to watch Green Inferno.
Good luck, mate!

She is smiling on that poster, and getting a group hug..... how bad/gruesome can it be? ;)

She is 5, will be 6 in January. I knew the movie was pretty mild as for the scary stuff, but when she is a teenager I will do my best to terrify her!!! Haha but for now It is all the stuff that won't keep her up at night. Last week I showed her Star Wars episode IV, we started there because IMHO it is just good parenting to let her see the films in theatrical order.
-
You are wise beyond your years.
She is in for thrills and chills galore.
I did much the same with my three kids and it never fails when I decide to sell posters, they all rush in to stake their claims to films that we shared together.
cheers

What a great birthday date. She sounds like a clever girl.

Ted
Such a great experience raising children is, thank you for sharing your stories. I agree, there are so many great films for her eyes to see.
I have yet to sell any posters, however my oldest thought it was her duty to liberate my Neverending Story. It now hangs in her dorm room above the head of her bed. Guess I need another copy..... Doh.gif
Jeff
Speaking of Kodak moments, I have taken time to document my youngest daughters life. A few years ago I setup an email account for her. Now as time goes by I send her messages, and pictures documenting her life. Tibits of knowledge, moments like starting school and so on. When she turns 18 I will give her the login information. I have not told anybody else on this planet about this, so ssshhhhh!!!!!
Rosa
Is your birthday in January? Capricorn perhaps?

My sister and brother in law did the same thing with their daughter, who turned 10 last May. It has been set up for a number of years, now, too. Anyone in the family can send her emails to that address--grandparents, etc and at some time in the future (i dont know if they will wait until she is 18 or maybe younger), they will give her the access to the account.
It's a GREAT idea, for sure, Chris. Your daughter will love to read those time capsule moments. clap clap

Jurassic World tonight, fingers crossed..
And no doubt followed by something for the scary month thread. ;D

Yes. In January. But I am not Capricorn... ;)

Just decided to put on the 89th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC with Matt Lauer and Al Roker. (it's also being broadcast on CBS).
It been a traditional watch for me, since I was a kid. ;D
The Rockettes are about to perform. It was just said they have appeared in the parade since 1957.

I'm sure you'll love it, Ted. The photography is just utterly jaw dropping. Watch it on a huge screen if you can.

I've been watching Planet Earth II with my 3 girls and they love it. My wife gets more anxious than they do. Beautifully shot doc. My buddy worked on the Continent 7 Antarctica show. He came home looking like RJ MacReady from The Thing....
-
Planet Earth 2 is excellent. CJ138, your friend was in Antarctica, eh? That's awesome. Is he working on anything now? A college professor here, who is a high level organic chemist, and in the Scuba Club has been there several times, searching for unknown compounds for use in pharmaceuticals, etc. Sounds like a heckuva place to visit.
