Title: Posters You've Given As Gifts To Non-Collectors
Post by: Dread_Pirate_Mel on July 05, 2012, 09:55:01 PM
Just gave this lobby card to a girl named Claudia.  She really liked it, says she's going to frame it.  (Not necessarily a romantic gift but who knows....)

I would have saved it for a good, hearty farm girl named "Ina" or "Olga" ;)

Olga? A farm girl?
Guess so... if it looks like a duck...

Mel's got a crush....  :-*

I buy and give Monty Python posters to my sister...  They never make it on the wall, but it makes me feel good to give her something.  All she seems to collect is pets and books...  She, even though 4 years younger, introduced me to a bunch of British humor stuff and I always think of her when I watch it...

Have given and framed a few sci-fi/fantasy ones for my kids, but that probably doesn't count.  I have given my sister framed inserts of Song of Norway and Bye Bye Birdie which she hung.  Gave a friend who runs a bike shop a 1 sheet of On Any Sunday 2 that I bought from one of Rich's auctions for a buck.

Gave my oldest daughter 1 sheets of Care Bear Movie, Winnie the Pooh and Rainbow Brite for nostalgia.  That got her husband involved and he now bids on the auctions as well.

I gave a DRAGONSLAYER insert to Jeff Jones, the late painter who designed the poster.
Not like I offered it to him as a gift, but he told me that the skinflints at the studio hadn't even given him a copy after it was printed.
When he asked me if I had an extra, I offered him his choice of the one sheet or the insert.

I gave an ex-girlfriend my double sided Private Ryan advance when we were dating and she crushed it after we broke up in a move across town.

I gave my brother in law a double sided Fellowship of the Ring (face down) because I have multiple copies and he left it in a the frame for three years and gave it back to me when he got married so I guess I 'loaned' that one out

I gave one of my best friends my folded Goonies hole in map version because it's his all time favorite artwork on a poster and I felt he just deserved it.  He got me my job here at Starz and he is just one of the best guys you can know.  I know it's worth some cash and it kinda stings to see it go for so much on eBay when I see them but it also keeps me grounded to value relationships over things.

My bro got-The Alamo. He dug it but never has framed it yet.Which reminds me,totally forgot about this. His birthday is coming up.
Gave my sister Lost Boys. Not the Stout version, the other one.I splurged for the frame as well. She freaked!Totally in love with it.It went up right away.

I've also given away and traded several commercial posters over the years.Mostly hard too find music and blacklight material.

I've bought a few for hubby over the years...I wanted to have at least a few up in the house he would enjoy.
Other than that, hmmm not really.  I think most people don't really "get" this hobby.

We gave my sister-in-law a Rebecca LC for Xmas (her name is Rebecca) - it was unframed so she could frame it to suit her decor. I was horrified to see it sitting on the mantle piece unframed months later - I had to explain to her the value and why she would take a bit better care.

On the other side, our close friends in Melbourne son who is just 8 years old is a big Star Wars fan, I send him posters etc that are OK to just pin on the wall - we watched him open a tube and the absolute joy when he saw his first full size SW poster was worth it's weight in gold. I send him any spare SW stuff I come across and occasionally I'll buy something for him (on Bruce's etc) if I think it is unusual enough for him to like.

I gave my daughter a R84 Loco for Giant which she got framed because she loved that particular image and I have an original Anastasia 1Sh set aside for her for Xmas (that's her name). I also have a '73 Hendrix 1Sh set aside for my muso son...but at the moment he is on the bones of his ass so he won't get until he settles down some otherwise he might just sell it for food!

I gave my neighbour a 'welcome to the neighbourhood' daybill poster for Light in the Piazza (1962) daybill because he was from Florence (where the movie was shot). He framed it and has it it in their media room.

In fact, I often give posters as gift to most anyone it's fun because it's an unusual gift and when it is a vintage one it's kind of cool too.

She loves Kill Bill.  I tried to explain to her what a limited print is, but I honestly don't think she gives a shit.  That print will most surely end up taped to her wall.  Which will also lower its print size.

My wife and I recently bought this for her dad:

He's a really big Simpson's fan, but he also always loved the painting this poster was based on. Apparently he had an opportunity to buy an original years an years ago (for a great price), but passed on it and regretted it ever since. We figured this would be the perfect combination. We got a few other Simpson posters for other fans in the family too.

An ORIGINAL of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks?  That painting is 8 feet long and is hanging in the Art Institute of Chicago.  Has been since the 1940s.

That is my understanding, but don't quote me on it. He said he could have picked up an "original painting", but I don't know the details or the price (other than it would have been a steal). He might have been mistaken on the authenticity, but regardless, he always loved the painting and wanted one.

I saw this when it traveled to the National Gallery (lucky to be in DC at the same time) but from what I remember is that it was bought directly from Hopper or his agent/gallery by The Art Institute.  I doubt this is the one he had the opportunity to buy...

I went to my ex wife's house a couple of weeks ago and low and behold the Mary poppins daybill I had framed for a valentines gift nearly 20 years ago was hanging on the wall.
And she is very unsentimental, so I was surprised (pleasantly).

I've given cheap stuff away, but one of my friends trumps anything I have ever given away ten times over:

Pierce Brosnan (back when he was still Bond) wasn't a collector of film posters, but my friend had spoke with him on a number of occasions and found out he was a huge fan of Goldfinger, so being the nice, generous (and slightly mad) sort, he gave Brosnan a Goldfinger UK quad...
...Yes, that's right - GAVE HIM A GOLDFINGER UK QUAD!!!!!!!!

Makes me feel puke2

Makes you sick? Why? Seems a nice thing to do.

My first eBay sale ever in 1999 was a hills have eyes daybill, this was before PayPal, and buyers would send me western union money orders. The buyer was in USA and he asked if I would send straight away and he promised he would send the money order. The reason is he wanted to give the poster to someone who needed it, and he was seeing him in a couple of weeks. Anyways I did. I recieved in the mail a photo of my poster being gifted to Michael Berryman, the star of hills have eyes, apparently at the time he didn't have a poster for the film.
Anyways I was very happy and kept the photo.

It's a figure of speech, Ari, as in "Hey, I wish that was me!".
Maybe it's a UK thing. Pretty sure the UK lot can back me up on that.

I've met Michael Berryman - very nice man.
I wonder if he still has your poster!? Would be cool if he did!

That's the beauty of any well designed poster - (it catches your eye and gets people talking about the flicker, well before it opens).   thumbsup.gif

Title: 'Tis the season! Movie posters you've given as gifts....

*****

So the common belief in MPC World is that everybody else disdains MPs, so best to keep your interest in the hobby "under the radar."

Not IMO and IME (experience). It's like everything else, share but don't overshare. Lotsa peeps complimented on and discussed at length the posters in my apt. and in my office.

Anyways, that brings us to the topic du jour: When/why/what have you purchased an MP for non-collectors and how did they like it? (Or when have you bought an MP for others who gave it to a 3rd party?)

*****

I'll start things off....

I always disliked my birth name Melvin. I am the 4th Melvin in the family and my grandfather's uncle was the first. (He semi-famously prosecuted the Scottsboro Boys, which led to crim. defendants being entitled to gov-paid attorneys). I went by "Mel" after age 18.

Anyways I like the name much better nowadays and even bought some "Melvin" posters for myself:

*****

But my father is also named Melvin//Mel so I gave my step-mother this half-sheet MP as a gift:

*****

Did she like it? Let her speak...

Beautiful Poster!

Jun 11, 2017

Thank you so much for the beautiful poster!  That was so thoughtful of you!  I'm going to hang it in the kitchen, the red will go well.... I do love Mel and Melvin and that's a perfect poster! I will treasure it forever.  What a perfect gift.....

Love,
Peggy

*****

Even my old man liked it, and he watches a movie every five years. He Googled Donald O'Conner and told me all about him, life-long entertainer, used to work in circuses etc.

*****

I'll add some more gift stories in a week but your turn now...

I've given several.  I gave a BTTF 1 to my son in law.  He had the other 2 and couldn't afford the first one.

My kids have gotten various fantasy ans sci-fy titles.

My sister got a Song of Norway insert, a Bye Bye Birdie half sheet and an Alice in Wonderland lobby.  I also have some Mama Mia original storyboard drawings for her this Christmas.

(In a rush, so no images today)

I have a friend who is a big fan of the French movies called "The Gendarme" with the iconic Louis Funes.

She is a real big fan and we always laughed about it as these movies are really mainstream cheapness...

Then, few years ago (I usually return to France for a month every two years), I gave the French poster of "Gendarmes et les gendarmettes" (medium size).
A nice poster if you ask me :)  And cheap !!

My neighbor "Claudia" just "loved" this one, framed it too:

I'm giving a Revenge of the Jedi poster to my brother-in-law for Christmas.  He's not a poster collector, but he wants classic 80s movies on the wall of his home theater.  Last year, he got the Ghostbusters advance and the Aliens "standing in the nest" version.  I had to re-buy both posters, but this year I'm late and lazy so I'm just pulling it out of my collection.

Great gift and he probably has no idea of its value. Recent sale:

He doesn't and never will.

If I had paid $1.5k for the poster, I probably wouldn't give it to him, but I got 5 or 6 of those for free years ago, so it's not costing me anything,

And so it happened to be.

I wish I had a dozen.  Sadly, with this one abandoning me, I'm down to 3.  I can't remember what happened to the other 2.  Probably traded one for something.

I gave it to him a few days ago.  He was quite happy, but of course he thinks it's a $200-300 gift (what I usually give him for Christmas).  He has no idea of what it's worth and I think he was a little disappointed that I didn't frame it...  laugh1  I need to find a way to let him know what it's worth without being obvious about it.

Wait, I'm not done yapping! I remembered yet another “giveaway” story!

*****

It was July 2014. The prior week an EMP employee had flown into DC and stolen, er I mean packed up/accepted for consignment, my final 500+ MPs.

So my ginormous poster cabinet was bare, useless, and taking up lotsa space. I was feeling charitable, so I listed it in the “Free” section of Craigslist DC. I listed it as “Large Art/Poster Cabinet” and warned that it was very heavy, enormous, and would require two men – sexist! – with a handtruck to haul it off. I also included a pic but did not know/detail its exact dimensions.

I expected 1-2 emails expressing interest in the next week. But the next morning I opened my email and 100+ interest emails popped up! Every five minutes another came in! I cancelled the listing and skimmed the requests, most of which were pleading “artistic poverty” and ever-lasting gratitude if I gave it to him/her. (I guess the DC arts community was larger/poorer than I thought.)

I lamely picked one at random and two perfectly-nice dudes showed up the next day with a handtruck. They were hopelessly outmatched/outwitted by the cabinet, shelves flying out at 100mph, etc. After 30 minutes of Olympian struggle, they FINALLY got it out into the hallway. I said goodbye/good luck. 45 minutes they hauled it BACK into the apt. because it was too big for their truck!

So I measured it and picked another email, explaining what had happened to the first pair. They showed up and handled it with aplomb. Goodbye forever….

*****

Want more “infotainment”?

Back in 2010, I bought the cabinet for $150 from a “yahoo in the sticks” off Craigslist.

I also paid him $75 to deliver it and gave him reasonable directions.

He was very late and he finally called me SCREAMING MANIACALLY about how he was hopelessly lost and how [BLEEPING] HORRIBLE [BLEEPING] LIBERAL GODLESS DC and I were! I spent 20 minutes on the phone calming him down and we finally got him on the right track. I thanked him afterwards but felt like SLUGGING him!

I am friendly with one young man who I saw in the parking lot one day, with his girlfriend sitting on his lap. Naturally this gave me an evil idea for a Christmas present. That year for Christmas I gave him the 1-sheet to FAIR GAME, which features Cindy Crawford sitting on Billy Baldwin's lap while she just about pushes her breasts in his face. For some reason, he didn't appreciate the gift!  >:D

My wife's step-brother is visiting from out of state with his family.  Big war buff.  The Hurt Locker, that was him.  Two tours of duty in Iraq.

Anyhow, he had no idea I collected posters and showed some real interest in the few pieces I showed him.  As a thank you for his interest, I gave him absolute mint copies of Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator and Braveheart.  He was so happy.  Now he wants to build a light box.  A new collector, maybe?

NOBODY LIKES MOVIE POSTERS!  devil 2

Well mebbe. You don't want to overshare your esoteric hobby - gardening, soccer, NASCAR, whatev - on somebody with "less than zero interest" in the subject.

BUT it's fine to occasionally mention MPs to others - and sometimes they get intrigued.

My wild brilliant college pal Bob - who started www.Geotoys.shop, an erudite toy company - exhibited zero interest in MPs so I rarely mentioned them.

But I was quite surprised when he mentioned he was buying a new house ... and asked about decorating with international MPs. So I ran some of my unloved MPs and donated the ones he wanted to him, bc no way he would make time to buy them on eBay for himself.

Not bad choices on his part:

I'm playing a dangerous game.  I've been doing major construction to my house since last November, and our contractor hasn't asked for a penny yet.  I'm talking structural work downstairs, steel beams to support the second story, new kitchen, new hardwood floors, on and on.  We owe him a lot.

A month ago, he discovered that I collect movie posters and we've been talking movies ever since.  He now loves posters and wants posters, so I've been gifting him a few posters in the hope that he knocks a few thousands off the bill.  Wishful thinking, probably  ;D  We'll see.  Last week was a Japanese Godfather B0, this week is a Star Wars D and the Dark Knight "Why So Serious".  All posters I have multiple of, so nothing taken from my collection.  It may be for nothing, though, but worth the try.

Not to be grim, but I would be worried if I were you.  I've had several houses renovated over the years (and I'm currently renovating a couple of apartments in Manhattan), and it's highly unusual for a contractor not to give you an update on where things stand budget-wise.  This is especially true when doing structural work, as those situations always end up either taking more time or costing more than initially anticipated.

Also, unless you have specifically discussed receiving a discount from him in exchange for giving him some movie posters, I would think it is wishful thinking on your part to expect that he will deduct a few thousand off your final invoice.  I think it's time for a frank and open conversation before you go further along with this.

All good points.

We didn't get him out of nowhere, though.  He's worked for a very close friend of ours (who recommended him) and did the exact same thing.  He came in 10% above his original quote, which is totally fine to me.  I'd expect 20% since we added a bunch of stuff.  And the posters, well, a Dark Knight is not going to make or break anything ;)  We're not talking expensive stuff here, so I'm okay to let them go for nothing.  And it's not for nothing.  I got a few tequilas with him and enjoyed some good movie talk.  But you're right, I need a little more than a good talk if I'm going to gift him the more expensive stuff.

As a joke I once gave my older sister a still from "Vampire Circus" that featured the actors in, ah, shall we say a suggestive pose.  Yea, I was in high school.  She was not amused, and I got lectured by my mother.

Stefano!  Yep, sister + Vampire Circus = lecture from mom.  I don't remember which year of high school math that was, though there were several variables that could be substituted for Vampire Circus and get the same solution, eh?   Okie
