Title: July 2015
Post by: eatbrie on July 02, 2015, 12:13:50 AM
I don't know if I ever started this thread before.

Here are a few posters I acquired in June.

Very happy about this one.  Folded, near mint, extremely rare RED Dr. No.  Much rarer than the purple and blue versions.

A few Italians...

A few Star Wars... (some I posted already, but not everybody checks the SW thread).

I haven't posted in 2 months, and bought a lot of posters, so I decided to skip May and only post some from the last 30 days.

I only bought one today, but it's really not interesting.

Thai Paint Your Wagon.

Nice to see you went for the Dr No, T.

I couldn't pass it up.  Not the cheapest, but I may never see it again.  Benito has one, but it is in horrible condition with all kind of writing bleeding through, according to someone who saw it in person.

I now own 2...  All I need is the blue version.  Also, keep in mind that these are not the cheap re-releases Bruce has been selling left and right, but the 1st release originals.

Thanks Mark.  Yeah, niche collections are what it's all about, imo.  The fun of trying to complete a collection is the main reason I collect.  And there are still so many more BB posters I'm after.  I know what they are and it seems endless.

Yeah, B0. I'm looking for some great posters around this size for films that I love, so it was worth it for me to pay more since it so rarely comes up for auction.

I think you're referring to when Mel was talking about how sometimes the UK quads use the USA vertical format artwork on their horizontal format quads, and just put huge borders around it.  You don't ever see the USA vertical format posters using a horizontal UK artwork, with huge borders around it.  wynk

Of course, there are times when the "empty space" is part of how it was designed, and adds a lot to the piece.  This one for Ant Man is pretty cool.   cool1

Everest looks good on the trailer, thanks for posting Neo.

I was just referring to the amount of un-used, white paper on the ant-man, but it does get it across well. He's tinny.

Post by: erik1925 on July 04, 2015, 11:59:31 AM
Thanks, and nice quads there, too, Paul. The use of open space on a piece like Ant-Man I can totally see..makes sense and drives the point of the "little guy." :)

And that Everest visual.. menacing and beautiful at the same time.

Then, of course, The Exorcist. A fave movie of mine; Dick Smith's makeup was top shelf, and the performances riveting!

Congrats, again.

I think that's my 5th Exorcist Quad Jeff, all from different releases; And yes Dick was the Master, I thought his make-up on Max von Sydow was first rate to the point people didn't realise, he was actually youngish at that time, and was more made up than Linda Blair...

Smith's old age makeups were top notch; Von Sydow was only 44 at the time of the film's release, and Smith had the ability to be subtle enough in his sculpting to make the work undetectable.

Same with his work on F. Murray Abraham, as old Salieri in Amadeus and Dustin Hoffman, in Little Big Man.   thumbsup.gif

So this recent arrival of JAWS 3-D puts my JAWS Thai collection into pretty good shape.  My favorite is the original artwork I have for the JAWS 2 poster.  THE LAST JAWS poster is cool to have because Universal sued the Italian company that made it and the picture is no longer allowed to be shown or distributed in any form.

There's something about the way Lee Marvin looks on that poster that angers me, as if the artist didn't take the time to really capture his spirit.  It's LEE MARVIN, take the time damn you! ;D

The JAWS 2 poster is not really double sided.  The story from Tongdee the artist is that the poster distributor was too cheap to print out separate proofs so he just used the backs of the poster paper the final printing would be done on.  The color on the back of mine is much more green and has too much contrast, I'm curious what your's looks like.

It's kind of cool because that makes each of the posters more individually unique.  I'm curious if anyone does not have printing on the back.

If I had the JAWS 1 artwork you would never get within a hundred miles of it my friend nono   gun1 gun2   laugh1

That's a tax stamp guys.  Very common on Belgians (and helps very much in determining originals!)

There had been a snipe across the top but it was removed before I acquired the poster - you can see some remnants of it

Indeed. And i love when these are found on Belgians, too, Chris.

They give an added sense of a poster's history and use at the time they were up and posted about town or in a theater.   clap

Is that Cocaine a RR, Chris? With no credits other than the actors' names, I often know this can be the case (same with US material done like this, too, or like the later re-releases that Belgium did for Laurel and Hardy films, for example).

As far as I know it is from the first Belgian release of this Italian film "Una Lettera All'Alba" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041588/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

So it probably dates from the early 1950s.

Well... thank you.  You know what's funny is that I like the Bond, and it's certainly by far the most expensive of the bunch, but the one that I'm happiest about is the Paris Texas.  I waited 4 years to get one in mint condition.  Connery is hot, but Kinski just does it for me.

Love that one, T. Boris Grinsson sure knew how to create good looking poster art.

Grinsson was good with Hayworth.

The Sadie Thompson and Salome posters were both drawn in '53.

Nice find and off CL, no less.

My local CL has a few posters, usually mass market repros or video store posters that the owners typically insist are "original movie theater posters" and want an arm and leg each.

The same Craig's List seller got in touch with me and offered me a couple more JP B1's. Since he wanted only a $1.50 each, i went for them, as well, as he was debating just scrapping them.  :D

2 different styles for the Spielberg exec-produced film, Innerspace (1987); directed by Joe Dante.

This came in last night.

An unfolded (rolled) insert for the 1959 sci-fi film, The Cosmic Man, starring John Carradine and Bruce Bennett (born Herman Brix, and used that name in his earlier Olympic and acting career). The movie looks to be a bit cornball, but I think the imagery/art on the insert is very cool. (And my first insert).

Some really spectacular pickups this month from everyone who posted! The ESB NPR poster is one of m,y all time favorites, nice score Neo. Jeff, the subject matter on your insert and the way it is presented is really something. The life lobby is something of a wonder too, great piece!

This one is a deviation from my normal I rarely ever pic up any kind of magazine but couldn't resist on this one. The Motion Picture Projectionist October, 1927 Vol. 1 Num. 1. A cool magazine with some really neat articles in it about setting up theaters, obviously projection related articles and even one from good ole Mr. Edison himself.

It's been a while since I've posted any new acquisitions... saw this one on eMovie and did a double take.  I knew I had to bid and was happy to walk away the winner this evening!

The reason I did a double take was due to the similarity to one of my unicorn posters.  For years I was hunting for an original copy of this very famous anti-war poster:

I imagine if you lived through WWII in Poland you are pretty much guaranteed to be anti-war.

Just recently I tracked down a 2nd printing from 1953/54.  It won all sorts of awards and got reprinted several times in the 1950s/60s so it's tough deciphering all the different versions.  Anyway, it's an amazing poster so when I saw the same (or at least VERY similar) building on eMovie's Battle of Stalingrad poster I had to give it a go.  They might make a striking (and somber) diptych someday...

Full disclosure, the picture I posted of the Nie! poster is not mine... that is the first printing courtesy of MOMA:

IIRC, my 2nd printing is almost identical but with slightly different fine print in the lower left.

Had this arrive today. A stone litho US OS for Rings On Her Fingers (1942), directed by Rouben Mamoulian. And i've always had a soft spot for Gene Tierney.  :)

Jeff was this the one from EBay last week? I'm a huge Gene fan and need this for my 1sheet collection but the condition on the EBay poster just put me off. If it is that one you got it for a great price and it's a fab poster.

Well done.

Marc.

Thanks gents.

And yes Marc, it is that copy. The verbal description made it sound in terrible shape. It isn't.. far from it, to be honest, and most of how it was textually described didn't even apply to this poster at all.

It has a couple small crossfold breaks and 2 minor edge dings, but otherwise sharp border edges, solid overall and the colors are very vivid, un-faded and bright. And the stone lithography is top notch.

Not too bad for 73 yrs old.

Even though you haven't found the one you're searching for yet, I think you already did better.
This is a masterpiece.

This is a BEAUTIFUL poster, Jeff.
So nostalgic, with vibrant colors and great fonts...

But yet, it sucks.
Yes, it surely does suck.

It sucks because you have it and I don't.

Maybe you missed Ted, but I *did* recently find a second printing of the Nie! poster.  This Battle of Stalingrad was just icing on the cake.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

Some really nice vintage ephemera this month.

Love that Projectionist magazine, Mike.
Is the cover art credited inside?

If there is a credit I have yet to find it on any of the pages but have only really skimmed it so far.

When I have some time to review the copyright laws and see if it is safe to scan and put this online I will let you know, unless we have a copyright lawyer here that can let me know with certainty that it is safe to do so. If it is safe I will scan it foe all to read, just don't expect it to be soon.  ;D

Very nice, gargoyle! Over how many weeks were these all won? You did a great job in the bid dept!

Thanks, I think about 5 weeks worth, I generally look at the auction history of a piece and then based on the condition make my best price bid, The auctions all tend to end at 1.30 am UK time so I just put my bids in at midnight and then wake up in the morning and see how I did  ;D  I usually bid on about 20 or more posters and win about three quarters of my bids, Keep missing out on Kickass poster though  moron1 It shall be mine...... ;D
Forgot to add this pic to my haul  ;)

I was down in Venice, yesterday, and stopped to see a poster seller I have bought from before. He sells mostly reprints/music artists posters/repros of things but does have some legit stuff now and then. He had a few JP chirashis on the counter. He wanted a 2 bucks for the 5 of them, and tho for new flicks (all 2015 releases), I decided to get them, as I've never had any before.

Pan ( a beautiful design, imo)

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The Peanuts Movie

Avengers (2): Age of Ultron

The Maze Runner

Yup the beauty of pay and hold although I took the risk of no insurance.

And when buying multiples, over time, it makes total sense, and can be the way to go. Yet, certainly not for anyone buying only one or 2 pieces in six months or more.

Sounds like like this has been the way to go for you, gargoyle.   cheers

Just received this cool Frenchie thanks to one of our British members here on the forum.
I've been looking for one at a reasonable price for the last few years and then she popped up at auction on ebay.fr.
Without Mark's help, she would've passed me by.
Thanks a billion Mark!

Its a 47x63 illustrated by Constantin Belinsky for Liane, White Slave, known here in the States as Jungle Girl and the Slaver, which is a 1957 sequel to Liane, Jungle Goddess (1956), also starring Marion Michael in the title role.

I can't take a photo at the moment due to her size, so this is the seller's pic (complete with watermark).  imbecile.gif

The poster is especially vibrant, but what really gets me is the texture. It almost feels like it was painted on thick paper..

Wow, the Bęte Humaine poster is beautiful.

I got a couple of Cuban posters from one of Bruce's recent auctions.  One is a personality poster for Pedro Infante, one of the great Mexican movie stars, so it still fits in with my usual collecting interests.  The other is a Cuban poster for High Noon, which I just thought was too cool to pass up.

Some recent Mexican arrivals too:
Una mujer sin amor, by Vargas (1952). This is for one of Buńuel's Mexican movies.

Immaculada, by Renau (1950)

No me defiendas compadre, by Francisco Rivero Gil (1949)

I find a lot of the Shaw Brothers "country of origin" posters to be kind of boring but some of them can be pretty cool.  The poster for this film I think is one of the best (IMO) and I just picked up an original of it in surprisingly good shape.

Wow, the new guys are cleaning house.
If I counted correctly, gargoyle and hepcatpunk sucked in 34 posters (and I believe, from 34 diff films?).
All great choices in title and design.
Very impressive.

A nice end to July for me.  As a side note, these posters demonstrate a pattern I had already noticed (not a hard rule mind you) where Mexican paper from the 1940s tends to be much higher quality than that from the 1950s and later.  The two '50s posters here are pretty good (though I have plenty of brown, brittle examples crumbling to pieces too) but even in these photos you can see the difference in paper quality.

Pepe el toro, by Juanino Renau (1952)

Ha! "TINTORERA"!!!  I LOVE this poster (and have one myself)! The movie sucks though (and I still own a copy--Ha!), but whatever. I am so glad there is someone else in the world who digs cheesy "JAWS" ripoffs. Bravo!!!!

This came in last night.

An unfolded insert for the 1959 sci-fi film, Cosmic Man, starring John Carradine and Bruce Bennett (born Herman Brix, and used that name in his earlier Olympic and acting career). The movie looks to be a bit cornball, but I think the imagery/art on the insert is very cool. (And my first insert).

Zowie Jeff! Very N-I-C-E. Bruce Bennett (as Herman Brix) also played Tarzan in the silent era. And yes, it IS true. Aliens ARE watching you even NOW!  EEEK!

Congratulations. CHEERS!

I never share anything with you folks, despite everything you unknowingly share with me. These are not all from this month, but since I am making a picture list this evening I thought I would share some of the more recent ones. So I recently picked up one of the last 2 posters to satisfy my Resident Evil Collection(I only focused on the first 3 films). Based on a conversation in another thread, and sound advice I might add from ddilts399, I made an ebay purchase. I found the poster to be very pleasing, despite my previous skepticism in regards to its authenticity.

I also wanted to share my E.T. stuff, these photos aren't mine, but you get the idea!

A Daybill, B2, B2, Thai, B3, and Turkish. The only one with folds is the daybill. I also have a U.S. studio and NSS versions rolled, a Danish (won tonight)and French 1p folded. After the Spaceship and Moon I think E.T. will be complete for me. Unless I find the lovely Polish, or the other 2 Thai. Some of these are not recent, but I never add to acquisitions so......

im not one for photobustas much but i do like it when they dont look like photobustas and look more like posters than fancy stills. not a fan of stills at all [unless they make hooch!] haha

love that scream of fear (taste of fear).
I almost started a collection of posters that use this (screaming) image, as it seems to have been used all over the world for the campaign)
But I decided that would be silly.

Resident Evil Apocalypse

I also wanted to share my E.T. stuff, these photos aren't mine, but you get the idea!

A Daybill, B2, B2, Thai, B3, and Turkish. The only one with folds is the daybill. I also have a U.S. studio and NSS versions rolled, a Danish (won tonight)and French 1p folded. After the Spaceship and Moon I think E.T. will be complete for me. Unless I find the lovely Polish, or the other 2 Thai. Some of these are not recent, but I never add to acquisitions so......

The other two ET Thai posters are very rare and hard to find. I have been hunting for the other two for a few years now.

I agree, the other ET posters are hard to find.  The cool thing is that if you do find them, they actually all three go together side by side to make one super cool image!  I believe they printed more of the single poster you have for general exhibition.

Don't hold back...post more posters!   sm1

Also in response to rdavey26....

I will pick up the Moon and Spaceship for sure, anything else will be a bonus. Like the Large Polish, or the Czech, or the other 2 Thai I would pick them up if I found them. I plan on displaying the majority of my stuff in the near/distant future.

What else would you like to see? I have some nice stuff from the 80's, LOTR, Disney, R.E.???

I have seen this one. I did somehow forget about it! It is different art, isn't there a reissue OS with the same art?
I would pick it up if the source and price were right!!!!! Unless I am mistaken you know your daybills Ari, so is this yours?

been a wee bit busy to take any pics lately :(
so have a fat backlog.
but bought this, the day after chris lee died. so ive had it a while like.
im not one for photobustas much but i do like it when they dont look like photobustas and look more like posters than fancy stills. not a fan of stills at all [unless they make hooch!] haha

Isn't the German version of this art the only one without her bikini top????

Thanks, y'all.

Nice poster indeed.  thumbsup.gif

I personally Love the "Monster/Girl" combo. Colossus of New York, Attack of the Crab monsters, King Kong, Forbidden Planet, Creature from the Black Lagoon just to name a few.

Yes.  It's the best version, for its uniqueness.  8)

Really dig this B3, btw.

July was a good month for acquisitions for me.

Finally collared one of these for a decent price.

And . . .  I took the plunge on this Star Wars Hildenbrant Quad.

This is a great idea Brude. Where would be the appropriate place to put it?
Also thank you on the B3! At first I was put off by the white margin on the left, but it grew on me.

I am probably not going to custom frame it, but I have a frame I put together with my framer of choice that will fit a quad.  I have a few basic colored pre-cut mats and swap posters every few months. Currently I have a rolled Empire GWTW in the frame. I would just need to redo the mount hangers on the back. This poster is in really nice shape, So I just need to flatten it out and will give it shot.

Thanks

Show Us Your Collection: http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/board,4.0.html (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/board,4.0.html)

Just start a thread/topic in that area specifying that it is your Gingerman collection -- title it however you please -- and let 'er rip.
