The hype is starting to build for this one.
5 of the inflation-adjusted movie grosses have been for SW films and SW8 is likely to join them.

In this article the director Ran Johnson reveals that he did not immediately say "yes" when he was tapped to direct!
He was essentially given a tabula rasa to write SW8.

The EW article reveals that Luke Skywalker does not give Rey a friendly welcome, unlike Ben Kenobi's reception of him.
It also discusses the death of Carrie Fisher after filming had concluded. The studio pledges not to use CGI to recreate her in SW9.
(As it happens the studio recently fired the director of SW9.)

As well as the director of the Han Solo origins movie??
(Wasn't even aware SW9 directorial duties had been assigned as yet?)

BIG NEWS in Star Wars world: JJ Abrams, direct]or/writer of SW7, will also write and direct SW9!

The "knock" on JJA is that he "rehashes" old SW plot lines:
http://collider.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-criticism-jj-abrams-rip-off/ (http://collider.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-criticism-jj-abrams-rip-off/)
Indeed, when we finally got to experience The Force Awakens, we discovered that Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan used the story template of the original Star Wars, effectively building their film on top of the skeletal foundation of A New Hope. There’s a lonely reluctant hero awaiting “something bigger” who gets roped into a big adventure to vanquish evil; there’s a cavalier, dashing pilot; there’s a finale that involves said pilot driving into one very specific weakness in the enemy’s big weapon, which is essentially another Death Star.
As it turns out, these aren’t just coincidences, this was all part of Abrams and Kasdan’s plan. Speaking with THR, Abrams addressed complaints that The Force Awakens is simply a rehash of a Star Wars story fans know already:
“It was obviously a wildly intentional thing that we go backwards, in some ways, to go forwards in the important ways, given that this is a genre — that Star Wars is a kind of specific gorgeous concoction of George [Lucas]’s — that combines all sorts of things. Ultimately the structure of Star Wars itself is as classic and tried and true as you can get. It was itself derivative of all of these things that George loved so much, from the most obvious, Flash Gordon and Joseph Campbell, to the [Akira] Kurosawa references, to Westerns — I mean, all of these elements were part of what made Star Wars.”

Some random Star Wars trivia today.
Before GL sold LucasFilm to Disney I read a long article about SW and learned a few tidbits:
- During the making of SW4, Lucas was openly despondent. The initial special effects were very late and of poor quality. It was over-budget and Fox had no faith in the movie. The unionized camera crew and staff refused to work after 5pm. So the actors did everything they could to cheer him up.
- Harrison Ford aggressively lobbied Lucas to kill off his Han Solo character in ROTJ or even ESB but Lucas refused.
- In later years Ford didn’t want to answer interview questions about Solo. He disdained the character and its importance to his career.
Disney required GL to convince Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford to reprise their roles in SW7.
When news of the sale of LucasFilm broke, I remembered the earlier article and thought that maybe Ford only agreed to participate in SW7 if they killed off Solo.
I didn’t think they would agree to that but I was wrong. (I was one of the few who anticipated Solo's possible death in SW7.)
Ford recently confirmed that he was the driving force:

Must read article in today's NYT about Mark Hamill. (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/30/movies/star-wars-the-last-jedi-luke-skywalker-mark-hamill.html)
- MH planned to decline to be in the new movies ... until Harrison Ford agreed to. “Can you imagine if I was the only one to say no? I’d be the most hated man in nerd-dom.”
- MH was not happy about his tiny role in TFA.
- More remorsefully, Mr. Hamill spoke of his frustration that Ms. Fisher would not get to complete this trilogy of films. “She deserved that second act,” he said. “Harrison was more prominent in VII, I’m more prominent in this one, and she was meant to be more prominent in the last one. Her timing was perfect, except in this case.

Internet is obsessed with the new plan. Consensus is that TLJ must be really good if they're handing the franchise to him:

Is this saying there will be 3 more films beyond the 9 in the original vision? not sure I care or why I opened this thread

My 3 year old son is so obsessed with Star Wars (he dressed up as Darth Vader for Halloween and I was a Storm Trooper!) I'm glad he will get to grow up with it the same way I did (as if it was ever in question since Disney acquired Lucas). Disney will milk the franchise, but with someone as talented as Kennedy at the helm, I'm hopeful. If it was in the hands of Lucas, I'd have serious doubts.
Check out my little Darth Vader!!! Yes, the Galaxy is still young!!!

In Dec 2015 when it came out, I had zero interest in MPs, so paid no attention to them. Checking them out now on IMPawards, they're nothing special. This one is somehow official and it's pretty funny:

Anyways I didn't like Rogue One in theaters but liked it much better when I saw it again recently.
I'm hoping for a similar experience with TFA. IMO JJ Abrams "blew it" like he did with Star Trek 2 (reboot). A THIRD Death Star? So so lame.
Did you all like it?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics.[364] On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 93% approval rating based on 376 reviews, with a rating average of 8.2/10. The website's critical consensus reads "Packed with action and populated by both familiar faces and fresh blood, The Force Awakens successfully recalls the series' former glory while injecting it with renewed energy."[365] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 81 out of 100, based on 54 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[366] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale; women, under-25s and under-18s gave it an "A+", while 98% of audiences gave it either an "A" or a "B".

Abrams had the hardest job... Lure in Baby Boomers, Gen X, Y and Z back in theaters and please everyone. Please the original trilogy fans, the Episode 1-3 fans, and create a new generation of fans. Not an easy task. Lots of parameters to respect. I think he succeeded admirably.

I understand the criticism that Force Awakens is derivative, but I really liked it a lot. Mainly because I thing the cast is pretty charismatic and likeable (Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Renn), but also because I thought JJ also did really well at capturing some 'magic moments', a good balance of nostalgia and new. I'm looking forward to Last Jedi...if they've given Rian Johnson a whole new trilogy, it must be pretty decent?

Must watch "fun" interviews with entire cast.
MH reveals that he kept secret the "I am your father" line for 1.5 years. When ESB was screened for the cast, Harrison Ford turned to him and said "you [bleep]ing didn't tell me that, kid!"

At least some % of the negative RT user scores have been purposefully manipulated (as per the article I linked)
But yes definitely a division amongst fans...
-
So IF, and I do mean IF, reviews and statistical computations are being manipulated, at what point does the likes of RT do something with its review structure and Tomato-meter to prevent untrue results?
This trolling is essentially making a mockery of the whole point of the tool. It must by now be deemed worthless as something to consider.
For my part, as a non-SW fan, I am actually looking forward to seeing it based on catching up with TFA only two weeks ago. My comments therefore will not be those of an afficianado of the lore.
-
I thought it was ok, not great, not terrible. Tonally it was weird, I thought the humour was really jarring. I liked that you didn't know where it was going to go next though.
-
After 1000 people spent $200m during nearly two years making this film, it does seem anti-climactic to only say of it that, 'it was ok'.
-
I'm not a troll. I think the audience ratings are well-earned. This story has issues. If it wasn't Star Wars, nobody would give a f#$% about it.
I am a lifelong fan of these movies. I saw the original Star Wars when I was 10 years old when it came out in 1977. After seeing what they came up with for this movie, I was underwhelmed.
I really liked TFA because it reset everything, got rid of the bad taste in my mouth after the terrible prequels and made me really excited to see what the new characters Poe, Finn, Rey and Kylo would do next. I also really enjoyed Rogue One. Needless to say, my expectations were very high. This movie was very disappointing.
Spoilers follow
All of these things took me out of the movie and detracted from my enjoyment:
How Luke Skywalker was utilized.
The answer to the Rey's parents question (although he could be an unreliable narrator).
Pretty much the entire Canto Bight side plot.
Too many forced jokes rammed in. Humor is a part of all the Star Wars movies, but it was overdone and fell flat too often. Blue-green alien seacow milk? Really? WTF.
Too many plot contrivances. Slow bombers in space needing gravity. Space Ghost Coast to Coast Leia. Battlestar Galactica Rebels. Why didn't the First Order just hyperjump ahead and cut them off? Why is BDT in a jail that he can escape from anytime he wants? BB-8 can really hotwire a Walker? Holdo still has shields. why doesn't she just get between the escaping ships and the First Order fleet to cover them?
With the exception of Kylo and Luke, did any of the other main characters change or grow? You could pretty much cut every single scene of Finn's from the movie, and it would not have any effect.
If the goal was to shit on everything in the Star Wars universe prior to The Last Jedi, mission accomplished. I feel like they took all the criticism of TFA about it being a re-make of ANH, and consciously wrote the story to as Kylo stays, kill the past and burn it down. Disney can do whatever they want. They paid billions for the property. Its not like my opinion matters. The movie will be wildly successful, and I will go to see the next installment regardless of how I feel about this one. I just don't think they respected the Star Wars universe effectively which makes a lot of old nerds like me upset.

I saw it last night, having kept away from all reviews. I can see why people are dissapointed. With all that talent and money behind it the expectation for something special must be high.
I think there are some great scenes but as a whole it's let down by a poor script with some badly judged humour. I'm amazed this guy has been given a new trilogy to create on the strength of this.

I might not be up on Star Wars lore, but the scene when someone was being asked to 'drop' the bombs, based on a trigger that had to 'fall' into the hands of someone... I thought there was no gravity in space to make anything drop or fall.
For my part, I was non-plussed. I didn't understand it and neither did I find it as beautiful to look at as JJ Abrahms' turn.
By the way, how is it that JJ films an entry in an already established series or franchise of films and thence for every entry afterwards, even if he is Not directing, he still gets an Exec Producer credit? Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Star Wars???

The whole gravity thing should be questioned for every episode and every ship then. How do the characters walk around with out floating off (has A Star Wars ship ever lost gravity) and R2 and BB8 should have been flung out into space long ago. I think either you have to suspend reality or create a situation where technology creates gravity on every ship. But if you did believe this that would mean that when forces were used to project the bombs from the ship that the opposite reaction and percussion waves would have flung the bomber upwards and away from the Drednaught... The other theory or explanation is that they were still in the planets upper atmosphere and there was still a gravitational effect during that scene.
-
Most every fanboy theory can be explained away. One issue fanboys had was that Leia should be dead after getting flung into space. Well as a kid I always wondered how long someone could be blow out an airlock and survive - 30 seconds until you pass out and 2 minutes until your organs shut down. I counted the second time I saw the film and it was almost exactly 1 minute (may have been exactly as I was doing the thousand thing.). So Leia could have most certainly survived as she regained consciousness about 30 seconds in and used the force to get back were she was then taken for medical treatment after only one minute.
-
Thanks for the reviews of last Jedi. So instead just went and saw The Disaster Artist and really enjoyed it.

Good points, all.

on the whole i really enjoyed it, but a couple of things grated me
the casino scene seemed pointless and it was as though they needed to give Finn something to do.
Luke brushing his shoulder, that fell flat.
and Smoke was a bit of a pussy when it came down it

Now the big question is, can Solo match Rogue One returns. I'll be amazed if it actually passes the billion worldwide, since I think there might be a little Star Wars fatigue. 4 movies in 2.5 years, that's a lot.
