Based on Louie's advice I am starting this Official Stills Thread for posts about stills.
My biggest questions are:
How do you tell and Original vs. Fake?
What are the different types?
How important is condition? Snipe?
What does the back of a still say about it?
Sets; are there sets?
Surface sheen, what does that say about age?
-
I'm not sure there are fakes as such, just copies of the Originals. You can also get modern stills taken from the original negative, which is a first printing, just not of the time the negative was taken...
This may well get very complicated... So lets post some stills... :D
-
This could get pretty deep into some investigative work... looking forward to this thread!
-
I'm hoping it's only stills we own...?
-
Charlie, these questions would need a lot of discussion.. it isn't easy describing in all cases and you have to learn by handling them
one question: are there sets?
yes, there are. each film has a key set. they are identifiable in order by the numbers in the lower right or left corner
-
I collect mainly stills from the 20's and 30's so it's fairly easy to tell reprints of those. The paper is different, reprints are usually a lot glossier, the weight of the print may be different, and since the the negatives don't usually exist for these, they are usually printed from copy negatives (someone who shot a picture of the original still and makes a negative from that to make prints) which can be a bit softer and are usually cropped. Snipes (the little paper on the back) are usually a good indicator the still is original, I haven't seen too many fakes of those but they are usually pretty easy to notice as the paper they usually used was a cheap, course paper, not like the ones you would put in your inkjet. I also have many photos which have handwritten dates and stamps on them.
Once you get into the 40's and beyond, you're on your own.

Thanks for sharing. Like I said, I am pretty good with stills from the 20's-30's but after that I have no idea what they were making negatives with.
As for the still with no identifying numbers, it's rare but it does happen. Is this an 8X10 or something else?
-
Yes, they are all 8x10.
When I bought the negatives, the "proof" prints without numbers came with it.

Pretty cool, if they all came together I would say yes, they are proofs to see how they looked. Where there a number of them and just the one bottom piece?

Exactly Louie, I purchased a lot of 17 numbered negatives, with their corresponding "proof" stills (except one) and the bottom piece. Some time later, I found a set of 5 "numbered" stills (made from the negatives purchased earlier) wich had a noticeable lesser print quality, and were probably for theater use.

I gotta say, too, that the drawing of Bebe Daniels on the back of her still is spot on. Louie, is the photo paper thin enough that it could have been traced from the front image? Or does it look to have been done more freehand? It's beautiful, regardless. bed1

Beer stein. I don't know if it was a tie in with his "What, No Beer?" film he made at MGM, but most of his talkies for the company, there's at least one scene where he's visibly and audibly drunk.

I assume it was done as a trace, but obviously by someone who was somewhat skillful. Still, when I got the photo, it was pretty cool to find that on the reverse.

Picked these up today I am leaning toward a 1956 RR set?... They have 1956 in the text but the stills I've seen on emovie say 1955 and 1963.. But this type has never sold on either EM or HA so I am a bit perplexed... I love the first one so I had to buy more...

Great shot, Louie. I would never have guessed this was Irene Dunne.

I'm unpinning this. It has had no responses since May. I want to clear out this section a bit. If it floats off the page, so be it. If not, well then that's great!
