The bad news, you guy's have now got some more competition. ;D
-
(http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/3936/pa090007.jpg)
So, Matt...what's the deal on this horizontal daybill for DEMENTIA 13? How were they displayed? I am assuming that poster frames in Aussie theaters were vertical. Were there any other titles presented in this horizontal format?
-
Not to put words in Matt's mouth (he won't mind as I am sure he is too busy buying a daybill somewhere that should be mine ;) ) but there are only a few other horizontal daybills.
And in my opinion the Dementia 13 is definitely the best of the bunch!
By the way Brude here is something interesting which we discussed on NSFGE a while back:
So which came first? The two Dementia 13 daybills or this travelling Horror Show poster? mesmrized

Oh, you have to find me one of those Chris. That is way too cool...
Was she really 6'4" of "Hex-Appeal?"

Nice selection, Ari. Especially like THE GANGSTER...very cool.
Now, a little mouse told me that you have almost all of the Hammer Films on daybill.
Is this true? Can you post some?
cheers
-
Ted, I think Ari has already posted many of them in the Hammer thread:

I couldn't single one out, They are all Jollyfine.

That BATTLE OF THE V.1 rocks, Matt!
Sweet daybills, both. wynk

Nice graphic of rocket bomb thingy

We call them Doodlebugs in the U.K. I didn't know the U.S. had any problems with them during the war?
Another great poster Matt. happy1

After seeing Chris, and Matts ( and Ari ) Amazing Daybill's I knew I had some some where. Not of the same calibre as the "The Daybill 3's", but all I have (I think).

Nice Paul. Moving over into daybills now too eh?
I like High Tide best. The woman on top looks a bit like Barbara Stanwyck. A good thing for her. 8)
-
Nice Paul. Moving over into daybills now too eh?
Had these for quite a while Zorba, but looking at some of the Daybill kings posters, I must say, I could do with some more. ;)
-
The Hunted & High Tide are two of my favs Paul. Very nice...
It seems that they must have been found in a stash together as most sellers have both and they are obviously so called "lesser" titles. Of couse, "lesser" titles sometimes have the BEST artwork like these two!
-

You just stick to your Quads Mr. Waines!

I have been thinking that too... 8)
-
I bought those two about 2/3 years ago Chris, and was surprised how easily, and how much the guy dropped the price for the two. Now we know...
I do love Quads, but I also like these Daybills...hmm. :-\ How about posting some more Chris, get Zorba and me in the mood for Daybill buyin...
-
These are the only daybills I have, and since I am more focused on other formats, that leaves more for you guys. :D Putting these among the fine pieces in this thread is kind of like lurkers but they are cool in this format, IMO.

Great daybills guys. :)

What the hell is up with the art on the "Clockwork Orange" db??? What are those scenes? Are they from Anderson's "If..."? They sure aren't from "CO".
--Peter
-
That's not the original Clockwork Orange daybill nor the re-release, never seen it before. Maybe it's a NZ poster???
Here's what I picked up yesterday at the "Bazzar" shop. Starting with a 5 buck war poster.

-
Sorry Chris, there wasn't anything from your list either.
Nice pickups Matt and of course thanks so much for keeping me in mind!
-
Very nice Matt, has Bardot's leg been covered up a bit?
The Clockwork Orange came in that box of film Memorabilia, it does have the M.A.P.S. logo on the bottom right, though I did wonder about it, thinking it's just one of those things!!
-
Thanks Paul, not sure what you mean about Bardot's leg?
Yeah saw the MAPS logo and I'm just as puzzled as you are.
-
I'm a complete novice when it comes to Daybills, please excuse my ignorance but is the Daybill format exclusive to Australia?
I think I may have just purchased my first db, not entirely sure if it's legit or not as I've never seen one before, with my glass half full head on I'm presuming it's a commercial print (dvd/soundtrack or something). This is the sellers image, will post a better photo once it arrives (fingers crossed!).

Great daybills, Paul.
What size is this Evil Dead II?
Cool image.
-
Just a note Re-Bardots legs..on the German Style A, the artist gave her thigh muscles big enough to pull a Tractor.
Stew
-
Just Between her jacket and thigh Matt, there seems to be a dark area for no reason! Maybe I just like to see more thigh ;D
That Clockwork Orange also says, "Roadshow release" !!
Ted, the Evil Dead 2 poster is 36 1/2" x 13" !!
-
I wonder if that's a "stock" daybill, like the exploitation guys would use here in the States? Just a generic poster that they'd print the title of whatever they were showing onto.
--Peter
-
Peter is correct. I have seen other such stock daybills, but those were from the 1940s and 1950s. They would be used by theaters who couldn't get a poster for some reason, so these could be printed in a hurry locally, and fill in in a pinch.
Bruce
-
Very nice daybills, Jeff.
Also dig your new PAN'S LABYRINTH avatar. thumbup

That's a mini skirt...you dirty old man. Then again, I see your point. ;D

re stock daybills, yes thats what the Clockwork orange above is, I have a roll f unused stock daybills, different genres, and all thats added is a silk screen in the center.
-
some more Dandy Daybills.
I love Seafaring things, and this is a beauty...

Not my favourite Polanski film by a long shot, in fact I possibly like the poster/s more than the movie (I like it, but he is one of my favourite directors, and I think its one of his lesser films - sacrilege I am sure)

Those posters are absolutely awesome.

You are all making me homesick for my beloved daybill.
Now if I could just find some time to get back into all this stuff!
What beautiful examples, Ves.. amazing.. and shows daybills done at a time when attention to detail and capturing the likenesses of the actors was of key importance, during the time of the stone litho process. Kudos to your collection! happy1 happy1

It is interesting to note that on the Aussie daybill, the hanged woman is missing from the skeleton's outstretched hand, as well as the severed head held by Price, even tho the artwork of Price and the skeleton remain the same. Most likely, that imagery was considered too extreme, in Australia, at the time?

Got it in one Jeff...we were considered so fragile here in Australia we had to be protected from just about everything!

Just scored this one. My conclusion on daybills: they are pretty cool, but not likely to become a new
addiction.. err.. sub-category of my collection, so that leaves more for you daybill lovers. :D I must say, this one is a delightful, dashing, dandy, distinguished, maybe even divine doozy of a daybill. :D One thing that I don't understand is why the stock used is so thin, it's probably thinner than a paper towel or napkin. This one was possibly from a professional Cheech and Chong type, as it was rolled into about a one inch diameter. Still an awesome, astonishing, awe-inspiring alternate image...I'll stop there. :D

that paper stock is common from that era, although USUALLY they are thin (just older ones not glossy). There are some, especially really cheap exploitation releases on thicker stock, almost insert thickness paper.
Good news is these flatten really well. Put some weight on it for a while and it will be like new.

That's good that they flatten out easily, still not a big fan of the thin stock, myself, but that is a good point about it. This is only the third one in my ultra humble daybill collection, and they've all been the thin stock, so it's good to know that there are others that are on something thicker, or similar to card stock. I have a few 30x40s that have been sitting under about 10 pounds of weight for a good 6 months in my flat file, and it looks like unless I put some more weight on them, they will never flatten out.
-
the thicker card stock daybills ALWAYS have terrible art, and one colour.
EG:

That's interesting, Ari. Maybe the same entity produces them? Pretty cool looking, IMHO. Those must be the ultra rare of the rare, huh?
-

Still gets my vote as one of the worst movie posters ever.
No offense, Ari.
wynk
-
No offense at all, Ive been trying to get rid of it for 10 years! haha shame because its a great film.
There are a few from Jean Rollin films, same stock as these, red ink, but actually quite nice (for some of his lesbian vampire films).
They probably are kinda rare, but generally nobody wants them, so, doesnt really matter - the title change on the russ meyer is kinda cool though for freaks like me.

What happened to the dandy daybills?

David, I'll take that Pagan Love Song off your hands.
Some freaking bastard outbid me on a linen backed one Bruce had for sale last June. >:(
-
Wasn't me, besides you bailed early in the bidding I see.
Got two left - one is for me :P the other: "Very Good. (small hole on border top left)", not folded as it was stored rolled for the last 60 years. PM me if you want it. ;)

I know I am cross posting but I figure to post again in here for the daybillers who are here and that will follow, all in one place as it were:
Went to a local auction today, and picked up a few things that I planned on and some that I didn't. I had noticed these three had been passed prior to Xmas so figured I might be able to score them at a lower price, colours are great. All technically Long Daybills although all three vary in size (despite the images apparently showing them the same size)
Play Safe (1928)
Although the movie came out in 1927 I believe it wasn't released in Australia until 1928 (someone can set me right if they know otherwise).

Thanks Chris, can't argue with you there - average price of less than $60 each framed, and it doesn't look like they have been dry mounted either! Very happy.
Have added some others since then, but this is the one I wanted - just thought it was very sexy.

Did you get that one David? If so you outbid me. But I wasn't willing to go after it hard because it's not in great shape and the movie, unfortunately, sucks ;)

Oh and one more thing - too bad that artist didn't do the Dead Reckoning daybill (where the likeness of Scott is much worse :-[ )
-
Did you get that one David? If so you outbid me. But I wasn't willing to go after it hard because it's not in great shape and the movie, unfortunately, sucks ;)
Ahh that was you... ;) No not in great shape, but I liked her lines.
And yes the Dead Reckoning likeness sucks, same printer so maybe the same artist? But perhaps not, the hands are a little different and I am led to believe that artist often keep their 'style' for hands like a finger print...or that's an old wives' tale and/or it does not apply to movie poster artists!
-
Well congrats are in order then!

$80 plus GST, no restoration required.

The Great Escape was slightly wrinkled and came out brighter as did all of them, which is one of many reasons why I love linen backed posters. The amount of dirt that comes of them can be amazing as you'd know. Flicking through unbacked posters risking a slight tear can be a little...well you know what I mean. ;) They are easy to frame, I just love'em. And taking out the fold line is not a reason as most of mine that have been backed, you can still see the fold line up close.
Have you seen examples of his restoration? (curious)
Yeah, I've got a few. He's pretty good but he's has told me that he gets sick of doing major restorations, so I'll send restorations to Dario and the easy stuff to Michael.
Those look great Matt!
Thanks mate! :)
-
I saw a couple of pieces years ago that were not very impressive (restoration/paint wise). But the linen backing was fine. I imagine he has improved, and these looked to be tricky pieces. I know the guy who had them done was happy with the backing but said he wouldn't get resto done again. But as I said was a few years back. He was MUCH more expensive then as well. $80 is AOK.
-
Wow...four extremely desirable daybills you have there, Matt.
They look great!
cheers

Greg from the Tyabb poster shop gets his posters backed and filled in but no colouring in done. He gets a local graphic designer to do that part of the job.
My old man is a retired graphic designer and he teaches painting part time, maybe I should get him into the poster game? ;)

Terima kasih!
-
Ah I see...the good old clean. That makes sense :)
I'm generally not a fan of backing anything if it doesn't need some sort of work, but I consider posters that need a wash in need of some kind of work.
Yeah he used to charge some ridiculous amount for backing donkey's years ago.
I've never used him myself - main reason I never tried him was the cost - was cheaper to send overseas, so can't comment on his quality of work, but Matt's look loverly.
Regards framing them, many moons ago, I got a whole bunch of mylar sleeves made to order through a company in melbourne.
Any unbacked pieces I have which I would like to go up on the wall, simply go into a sleeve and then into the frame. Easy...
But I agree, backed daybills just have that extra something about them. I think because the paper is so thin, backign just addes that something...hard to explain, but when you've seen it backed vs unbacked, speaks for itself.

Susan used to say that anything which needed minimal touch ups, you should give it a go yourself.
Get some good quality watercolour pencils, and off you go.
I was (and still am not) brave enough to try.

The thought to do the coloring in after backing has crossed my mind. Steve (50s) mentioned that he does that. Sounds like a good idea for DIYers, and it would be good for me since my go to company, Poster Conservation, has separate rates for backing and restoration. Until someone proves me wrong, I have a feeling the backing part could severely damage pieces, if done by DIYers.
-
I wouldn't attempt to try backing myself, but colouring in with some water colour pencils I'd have a stab at. be especially good for Aussie hand lithos.

Another version of an AUS daybill for THE OUTLAW. This, apparently, is the first Australian release poster rather than the RKO version.
In looking at the distribution of this film, it was first distributed in the US, in 1943, by Howard Hughes Prod. In 1946, United Artists was then the distributor.
1949 then saw RKO Radio Pictures as the distributor of the PCA approved version in the US and, finally, in 1950, RKO (A/SIA) distributed the film in Australia: ;)

Just a little green over here :-[

That "The Thing" poster is Very nice, looks amazing. thumbup
Can we ask who did the backing and restoration?
-
Jamie Mendez Restored The Thing and Goldfinger for me.
-
Well, I have a few posters I need doing by him. Everything thing
I've seen by him is first rate... Thanks Craig.
-
If I am mistaken isn't Mendez the Egbert of restoration?

Yuup...he did good.
The Lost Moment is very nice - I am always fond of a good neck nuzzle poster..

Those are some fine daybills you got there, Matt.
Especially like the sci-fi's and Marilyns...
cheers

Those all look great Matt - congrats!

Cheers Guys. :)

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated!
That was a fine/fun bunch of paper to work on. Personally I really like the graphics on Bus Stop and Rocket X-M.
Well, it's early sunny Sat morning and I think I'll hit the Gym, coffee and the news paper.
Best,
dario.

What a guy, he even restores the News Papers.... ;)
Jollyfine bunch of posters Matt, though un-like David, I like the Lost Moment poster
for the Spooky House... :D

Actually I don't mind the house - just like the neck nuzzle. Sex first then scare the pants off me...hmmm, maybe that be the other way round?? Anyway, reminds me of another one that (I think) Matt beat me on, had a very cool spooky house on the hill in the distance.

Truly a candidate for the "so bad that you can't take your eyes off of it" award!
-
Sadly I wish I knew it was up, one more I didn't know I needed.
-
Really insane to think that
a.) someone rereleased THE CREEPING UNKNOWN in the 70's
b.) someone thought it was a good idea to create THAT poster to advertise it
c.) someone bought a ticket for the movie based on THAT poster
Crazy country, that Australia.....
Armin
-
Hey, we don't judge a book by its cover here :)
-
Hey, we don't judge a book by its cover here :)
And obviously not by its content either if CREEPING UNKNOWN was such a smash hit down under that someone saw the potential to release it again.......
Armin
-
Nah we just use cinemas as an excuse to root in public. So the actual film doesn't matter, it's the title, it is cryptic way for telling possible patrons the fetish of the night, creeping unknown was I believe a night for people who like masks and moccasins.
-
THE CREEPING UNKNOWN is still my favorite Quatermass.
Anyone have a one sheet for cheap?

I could not resist this daybill last night on emovie. I am sure the APF Price Police has issued a warrant for my arrest after spending $330 on it. But a stone litho with both Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne is a winner in my book. happy1

Thanks for the nice words. I have an aversion to photo based daybills, but I really like the stone litho artwork of the older ones. Here is the emovie pic of the one I bought from them earlier this month.

Don't worry about the Price Police in here - he doesn't like Daybills so there is no reason for him to come in and rain on your parade.
Me, I think it was a lovely buy, the colours really really pop, I think the art of Stewart and Wayne are excellent - great poster (and top notch song too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDN4L7cAQf0)

No need for a rise sir!
You see - the "Accused of Murder and "I Cover the Underworld" posted my John (unless he's got multiple copies) are safe and secure in my daybill vault.
Oh and I have a "High Wall" as well - and I know who has the "They Won't Believe Me".

I just received the first 4 of 18 dandy daybills won in recent auctions from Bruce. I must say (as I am unfamiliar with daybills as I only have one store away years ago) these daybills are rather nice. The art and colors are better than I expected and they would look very good on a wall.

Cool...now we have to wait for your next post, or can you show us now Steve?

That EAGLES OVER LONDON is excellent, Matt. Love the others, too.
Since I have so few daybills and this one just arrived, I should post it for posterity in this genre thread.

Ted. this is one killer daybill. Love it!!
clap clap clap
-
It is, isn't it?
I have Ves to thank for that one.
It is based on the American one-sheet which was illustrated by Zoe Mozert, a premiere pin-up artist of her day.
(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu12/brude2000/CalendarGirl1947SSF.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/brude2000/media/CalendarGirl1947SSF.jpg.html)
She did several movie posters, including her most famous - Jane Russell in The Outlaw.
-
The US pinup art of Mozert's is great... and the aussie artist did a really fine job in trying to keep and maintain the same look and feel.

Just packing a (hand) delivery and thought I would share this.
People usually say Daybills are 13"x30"
While this was true for much of their history, and as we know early ones much larger. post 80's there is all sorts of sizes, and dont worry unlike US -posters, this isnt a red flag.
3 Horror Daybills, 3 sizes. All originals

Hello,
I’m posting this message here in hopes that folks are still checking up on the new posts. I’m looking for help finding an Australian Daybill Teaser poster. I’ve also posted this message on the “Wanted” board but it was recommended to me to post my message here in an Australian-specific thread as I was looking for an Australian poster. I hope there are some folks still out there as the last post to this board was in 2018! Here goes…
***
Desperately seeking a 1963 “Dementia 13” aka “The Haunted and the Hunted” Australian Daybill Teaser poster measuring: 13.5” x 30”. This unusual daybill is meant for horizontal display as opposed to the ordinary vertical display. Do you know where I can find one/have a lead on one that’s for sale? If so, please PM me right away, TVM!
I have been trying to find a decent copy of this poster for quite some time now. It’s atop my all-time favorite film posters that I don’t (yet) own. It’s eluded me, which is why I’m reaching out to you kind folks here. About once a year a copy makes it to auction at eMoviePosters.com with the last one being June 2021. That copy sold beyond my means as it went for more than 3.5x it did in 2020 (the condition was better).
“Dementia 13” is a horror film that was produced by Roger Corman and was one of the first films Francis Ford Coppola, credited as Francis Coppola, directed. Not sure what those green gremlin-like eyes have to do with the film (I have watched it) but they’re pretty damn cool looking and I really want to add them to my exclusive (sounds better than small, right?) collection of vintage film posters.

There’s one for sale online at a vintage movie poster shop but it’s a bit pricey, especially because it has red marker/ink bleed-through in the margin from writing on the poster’s rear. The shop claims that the bleeding defect can be rectified with a linen backing—which they’ll gladly do for an additional fee—but I’m not sure. Maybe it can—I’m still learning. But my gut is telling me that structurally strengthening and smoothing out the folds and creases, both done from the reverse, wouldn’t rectify red ink that has saturated through the back of the poster to it's front? But what do I know :-\ Am I wrong, can a linen backing help bleeds?
I really hope *fingers-crossed* to hear from a whole bunch of you with information or potential leads. Thanks so very much in advance!

During the process of linen backing, the restorer would try to sand off as much as possible of the ink on the rear. From there, any ink left runs the risk of growing/spreading further when the paper gets wet from washing, adding the wheat paste, or both. Then the restorer would, once dry, try to cover any ink with paint or pencil
