Need help authenticating a DS Shawshank Redemption. Just got one in the mail and a few things worry me:
- measures 40" x 26 15/16"
- feels thinner than I would have expected
- held up to the light looking at the back side and the words at the top, the letters on the front are ever so slightly lower than the letters on the back. you can see the difference but it's only about 1/32" or so, but you can see it
- credits look crisp but logos at the bottom are questionable:
- circle at top of lighthouse in Castlerock logo is slightly indiscernible
- (R) mark for Dolby logo is indiscernible
- text below 'film cell' in Epic Soundtrax logo is indiscernible
- the following text in the Columbia Pictures logo is slightly indiscernible: "(C) 1994 Columbia Pictures Industries Inc All Rights Reserved". That's the text between the large "Columbia Pictures" text on the top and the smaller "A Columbia Pictures Release" text on the bottom
- granted all of those lines use a thin font but usually there's not bleed over
- distance from bottom of poster to bottom of "This Fall" text is 1 1/4"
- distance from top of poster to top of "Fear Can Hold You Prisoner" text is just slightly more than 7/8" (call it 25/32")
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
Refund clock is ticking...

Mike, was this an ebay buy?
-
Yes.

At 26 15/16" wide, I would wager that you are safe in that regard at least, Mike.
The fuzzy and unreadable fine text, tho, who make my radar go off, too.
You have any pics of some of that text you could post?

Also worth mentioning that all of that small thin text is on (near) black background.
Also, the "Tim Robbins", "Morgan Freeman" and "This Fall" text looks red (or a really really reddish orange-red).

Agreed - 1/16" off is usually ok. The 40" is spot on (as is the 26 15/16"). Also the 1 1/4" for the bottom text is also spot on, though looking at EMP pics it looks like it should be more. The offset between front and back top text made me really concerned.
Give me a few minutes and I'll get some pics.

Compare it to this, too, Mike...

Thanks Jeff! Was checking EMP and CMP but forgot about HA.
Reason for asking is because this poster was listed as a known DS fake in this thread:
http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,3107.0.html (http://www.allposterforum.com/index.php/topic,3107.0.html)
Here are some pics. Tried my best but black and flash don't go well together.
My concern is that typically text should be crisp and clear, but I do realize this is small thin text on a black background.
Wasn't able to get a pic of the offset between front and back text (yet).

Also forgot to mention that colors on the verso are about the same as those on the front (if the verso is lighter, I can't see it).

geez Mike. post a pic of the whole poster

How could that possibly help?!?! :P
Sorry, my bad. Here you go.
I used the blocks for color reference. The left is orange, the right is red.
The poster is rolled such that the front is on the outside, thus the difference in blacks between the pics.

it looks good to me.. let me see what image I have on file

Looking good, too, Mike.
Those closeups of the text on your copy dont look bad, to me, at all, either.
:)

I made some digital measurements using the HA pic and one from Cinemasterpieces, along with what I measured on mine. Using the 'H' from 'THIS', which is 1/2" tall, I measured the margins on the digital images. The results were close enough to be satisfactory - approx 1.5 'H's along the bottom, roughly 1 horizontal 'H' on both the left and right sides, and approx 1.25 'H's along the top. So no drastic image scaling from what I can tell.
The 2 remaining questions for me then are:
1) should the front and back text along the top be offset? (the front text is approx 1/32" lower than the back text on my copy)
2) should the verso be lighter than the front? (both sides look the same on my copy)
Gaining confidence...
Huge thanks to Jeff and Jason for both public and private discussions, as well as Rich. cheers

Thanks Rich!
I also messaged the seller to get more background info on the origin of the poster. Based on his response, the help here and from private convos, sounds like this is a winner.
Thanks again for the collective help.
It's stuff like this that makes this place great! thumbsup.gif

speaking of Shawshank...
Mind boggling that this would take place in the US (or any western prison system) in this day and age...

Good lord. Edward Norton and Matt Dillon will be perfect for the film about this. The guys sure have a brain and a sense of humour. The post-it note is quite a gesture. Maan...

Yeah, I saw these two bastidges hitching a ride way up north today.
Too bad for them they were on my passenger side -- on a cliff.
After I hosed off the truck, I called the DEC and told 'em I hit two deer.
;)
Seriously, they have connections to the Syracuse area and the cops are swarming everywhere.
They'll be found soon enough.
