And the second time in 4 months the wonderful Royal mail, handling your items with care, or is that don't care? I very rarely swear, but what a bunch of Fuckin Wankers. Now the 3 months to try and get some compensation that I did'nt want.
-
dare I ask -- what was the poster, Paul?
-
Out of all the things in this hobby, I hate most, are the damaged packages that arrive on my doorstep. Sucks man, I think we've all been there more times than we would like.

dare I ask - who was the seller?
We use thicker sturdier tubes than most sellers, which cost more to send, but they virtually never get damaged. Our customers seem to think it is worth the peace of mind, especially considering the handling the Post Office and UPS subject them to.

Yes Paul, which poster is it?
We are all just a little morbidly curious and I know it doesn't really matter - things like this should not happen to any poster!

Exactly!

Hi, Paul!
That looks like a folded poster anyway - so why was it in a tube at all???
Best wishes,

The poster was a 50's re-release of "Abbott & Costello meet the killer Boris Karloff" Ebay seller Josephyoung. I have contacted him and as yet no reply. I do think For sending rolled items the p.v.c. tube maybe the way to go. Though this was originally folded, so I would of prefered it sent that way.
This item was supposed to be sent recorded, and the postman just left it in my porch!!
I'll take a photo of the front tomorrow.
-
Hello Terry, We must have posted at the same time. I think it was just the way he stored it. So he sent it that way.
-
Ugh! I know that sinking feeling when you see something like that. I've seen packages that looked like they were mauled by a T-Rex after going through the USPS. Unbelievable
-
I had just put it in the pile for now, so I went back for a look and took a pic of the poster.
-
I feel for you, believe me I do. I had the same thing happen to a mint, rolled Blade Runner.
However, if it makes you feel any better I don't think it was as bad as I was expecting after seeing the back and the tube. The ink on modern posters seems to flake off when this happens leaving a series of white creases/crinkles up the length of the poster. The ink looks much more stable your poster (stone litho?) so the wrinkling might flatten out with the application of time and weight.
It still sucks though, I know.
-
I may have to get the Ironing board out!
It does'nt look to bad in the photo as it is mainly in the dark area, but is quite noticable when in front of it.
-
Man, what a nice poster to have that happen to (http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/shakehead.gif) God that sucks. Is that a quad?
-
Shame that had to happen to a very nice and collectable poster.
Was it insured? Fingers crossed it was...
I suppose you could always look at having it backed which would take the crinkles out?

Someone should open a paper core factory in the UK. 90% of the tubes I get from over there are built like a wrapping paper core.

I agree. I buy from all around the world, and the largest percentage of damaged posters/tubes comes from the UK. By far. I'm always worried when I buy something over there, and I always send multiple emails to the seller asking them to use the sturdiest tubes. I don't know why this is.

There are a couple good guys over there. Graeme uses PVC, but yes a lot of them have no idea how to ship a poster overseas.

Hi!
I've said this before - and I'll say it again - there's no excuse for using poor quality tubes - there is no difficulty obtaining heavy duty tubes here in the UK. I'm sorry to say it's not only rolled posters that get despatched in poor quality packaging, it happens with folded posters too. It's certainly not down to the non-availability of suitable materials.
Best wishes,
Terry - www.quadbod.co.uk

Most of the folded posters that I get that have piss poor packaging come from France.
-
( Man, what a nice poster to have that happen to God that sucks. Is that a quad? )
Hello Doc, Yes the poster is a quad.
-
Unfortunatly it was not insured, so it's a long drawn out carry on with the post office.
Here is the one from a couple of months ago that was damaged in a tube. not a cinema poster, but one from 1971 still quite rare, I was going to frame it and put it up in my poster room.
The other two are how we normally receive post in the U.K. luckily the poster was not damaged in that one. The mind boggles.
-
Oh, and this other one just to confirm how first rate our ROYAL MAIL is. again fortunatly no damage to the poster?
-
That's ridiculous.
-
But that's just totally inadequate packaging - not entirely Royal Mail's fault if it doesn't withstand the journey. It appears to be a card-backed brown paper envelope with absolutely no reinforcement whatsoever.
-
Yes some of the packing is not quite the ticket, I wish I had a photo of the one that was scrunched up in a shoe box (I kid you not).
-
I THOUGHT I had "seen it all" when it comes to terrible packaging, but a few weeks ago I got the all-time topper!
I had won a travel poster on eBay for over $100, and a few days after I paid, I got an anguished e-mail from someone else who had bought from that person, and they said their purchases had come in a really flimsy tube, and that it had arrived bent in half, and he was e-mailing the seller and others who had bought from this person, urging them to tell her to get better tubes.
I contacted her right away, but alas, she had already sent it. It came a few days later, and the tube was EXACTLY like what is inside a roll of paper towels (and only around 2 inches wide at most, and it was over 30 inches long (do they make rolls of paper towels that wide?). To boot, she solely rolled the paper very tightly and stuffed it inside, with no wrapping, or padding at the ends, and she put clear tape over each end.
Of course it was bent in half (it could barely be held without bending, and the slightest pressure would dent it), and the poster now has huge creases down the middle.
To the seller's credit, she offered to give me a full refund, and I offered to keep it for $35, and she accepted, and refunded me the difference. I was just feeling sorry for her, because it is only worth $100 or so in nice condition, so it is not worth backing, and the creases are extremely noticeable.
The capper is that she told me she asked the Post Office if the tube was strong enough, and they assured her it was!
I have the tube and I intend to photograph it and put it on my site.

I bought a fantasia, original release daybill off ebay, it came in a paper envelope, no card, struffed in my letterbox. lucky older posters can usually survive, glossy ones are harder, it turned out ok, and a day later I sold it to a dealer for $US1000, cost me $30 Aussie, so I didn't complain. but its funny to think what value could have been lost - by the way I didnt rip the seller off, she listed as OLD FANTASIA POSTER, with no picture, I took a gamble, that paid off.
-
Sweet find Ari. And yes, I've noticed that older paper (assuming its not brittle) does hold up better to normal wear and tear.

EPISODE 8 - THE REVENGE OF POSTMAN PAT.
NOT SO LONG AGO, IN A GALAXY NOT SO FAR AWAY. THE EMPIRE (royal mail) WAS OUT TO STOP A BAND OF REBALS KNOWN AS THE POSTER COLLECTORS.
Old Obi-Wan (me) was buying a poster from a Jawa (some guy in the south of England) who did not want to take the poster out of a frame, as it had been in there all the time he had owned it. Fair enough thought Obi-wan, it will be well packaged, and have all the "FRAGILE" markings on it.
It will be delivered by "THE FORCE" (parcel force that is, same as Royal mail) So all should be well.
THE POSTER ARRIVED, AND THIS IS NOT FOR THE SQUIMISH. SO THOSE OF A NERVIOUS DISPOSITION GO AND CHECK OUT THE DISNEY CHANEL?
There was an uneasy feeling and a strange noise coming from the package........THE EMPIRE HAD STRUCK BACK, AGAIN.
-
BEWARE THE EMPIRE?
-
Paul that is cringe-worthy!
But I am glad to see you are in good humor about it...was the package insured?
Also, did the actual poster sustain any damage?
I don't think I would EVER ship a poster still in the frame OR have one shipped to me...
-
Well Chris, I have been told that they will carry glass items, but are not liable if there is any damage?? So the reply was "TUFF" they would not do anything about it. Yet the guy selling would not take the poster out of the frame. So I had to take a chance if I wanted the poster.
Luckily the poster only had a few minor scuffs, so very very lucky. It could have been so much worse, as the amount of glass shards in the packaging was unbelievable.
I was planning on some restoration work as it needs some, but as this quad is so so rare, plus I love the film I had to have it. It is the only Quad I have ever seen from the first release.
-
WTF? You have got to be kidding??
I think I found the guy...
