We need a thread for general news.

One of my heroes just passed away.  He helped conceive what I consider to be the best designed movie creature ever.

This is really sad news though not unexpected.
I spent many hours, both on and off the record, with Dan O'Bannon
while he was working in London on ALIEN. Sometimes we sat his hotel room
at the end of a day's shoot, he'd tell me the horror stories of the producers
wars on that film, and how Ridley Scott battled continually to keep many scenes
in that threatened to be diluted or deleted. They lost the final Ripley vs the Alien
as it was originally designed, but kept many other things.

These were sardonically humorous. Dan had a razor-sharp mind and wit.

Dan O'Bannon was way ahead of his time in the way SF films were perceived. An avowed
Philip K. Dick fan, he felt that real SF had rarely made it into films.

He was warm and friendly if he knew you were an ally and not stupid. He did not suffer fools
gladly, which maybe was why he never could play the Hollywood game.

He ferociously fought off producers who wanted me thrown out of the ALIEN production officers
when I was at the studio to see Dan and Ron Cobb. I was there via a back-door to interview them
for DARK STAR, which was just coming out in England.

I was there for a couple of hours, and Dan showed us heaps... all on the strength of our word that we would
reveal what we had seen. That then led to other out-of-studio get togethers.

Fond personal memories of this highly original talent.

Great story.  Thanks for sharing, Phil.  I wish I had met him instead of the talentless, obnoxious idiots I meet on a daily basis.

One of the most influential people in the genre.  Any fan of PK Dick understands what good, real sci-fi is.  His presence will be missed.
