I also just saw the "Slumber Party Massacre" poster on your last post as well.
Seeing you mention that the second one is your favorite of the three reminds me that I also recently got a standee/display for the second film. It's my favorite of the three as well, with the third following closely behind. I haven't seen the remake myself but I'll get to it soon!
There's also a reboot on the way for the similar franchise "Sorority House Massacre".
A standee for Part 2? How awesome! I am thrilled to have the one sheets for Parts 1 & 3. (I'd like a better copy of 1, but...) I have the video poster for Part 2--but KNOW a regular one sheet exists for it. I've been hunting for it. I do have the one sheet for SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE as well. I have NOT seen the remake for SPM either. Ha! They're also remaking SHM? No surprise, I guess. What isn't a sequel or remake these days?

Welcome back to the Shock-O-Rama Poster Show! Okay...so, it's only been two and a half months since the last post. Better than I would have anticipated...but it still feels like a million years since we were all last here. As usual, there's some crap on display...but also some better stuff. (Well, I think it's "better stuff" anyway.) Let's take a peek-a-boo-a-gogo, shall we? Here's what I've got for you this time:

NAKED FLAME/OPERATION CROSS EAGLE (combo): Okay--NOT the best poster ever. Although the top half has a great tag line ("Nude protests erupt in flaming violence"), the real reason I bought this snoozer of a double bill is because of where it came from. As a lover of odd, strange, obscure, cheesy, grindhouse movies, I have been a huge fan of the video distribution company SOMETHING WEIRD VIDEO. Through Something Weird , I finally got to see movies by HG Lewis, Doris Wishman, Joe Sarno, etc. I saw bizarre-O sexploitation flicks, crazy kiddie matinee movies, Mexican horror shockers, and more! Something Weird opened the doors to so many wondrous cinematic sleaze fests. I was in heaven when I discovered them. So what does this poster have to do with Something Weird Video? A friend here in Seattle knows the widow of the founder, Mike Vraney. Lisa Petrucci has assumed the mantle of CEO and is in the process of downsizing the company. She had a yard sale last month and I was invited to go. I went hoping to score some great posters from their wild, ecclectic catalog. However, what was available wasn't all that interesting. This was the best thing I came across. So, it's not so much the poster I like, but where it came from. But the experieence was awesome---and there was an open house at the Something Weird headquartes a short time later (where some amazing vintage posters were on display for my drooling eyes. I wrote about all of that (with photos!) if anyone is interested. You can see it HERE: https://monsterago-go.blogspot.com/2023/08/something-weird-this-way-comes.html

DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN (Spanish): Yea...this was a mistake. I didn't notice the torn corner until after I was bidding. (I was on the phone. I can't see on the phone. Argh!) Maybe I can hide it with a frame? At least the image is intact.

HAUNTED MANSION (2023):
I am looking forward to this new Haunted Mansion flick...but I don't have great expectatrions for it. This was cheap though...

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER (Teaser): This poster was a bargain---it was FREE. A friend's husband works for UPS and occasionally they get items to be destroyed because the company receiving them has gone out of business or returns are no accept. My friend Gillian's husband snagged me some posters heading for a now-defunct theater. There were other posters with it, posters for THE FLASH, BARBIE, BLUE BEETLE, and maybe a few others. But this one caught my eye. A new Dracula movie? I had no idea.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (International style B): Before the latest Indiana Jones flick debuted and was hearlded as a flop (But really...it cost nearly $300million to make. How could it NOT "fail"?) Anyway, I'm sure prices are dropping, but I scored this weeks before the film came out...probably at top dollar. Oops! I just wanted to be sure I got one.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (Style A):  I should have been happy with this one alone. The other was poor judgement, perhaps. This one looks the most like the other posters in the series. I haven't seen it yet, but I will--and soon--in the theater. (If I can find one still playing it...)

THE TOXIC AVENGER:
While I have seen the first two (three?) of the TOXIC AVENGER movies back in the VHS days, I was never a big fan. I found the humor too slapstick and sophomoric. Yet here I am with the poster. Why? I was there. It was available. End of story.

GHOST CHASERS:
It's funny, but out of the dozens of Bowery Boys movies, I have never seen a single one. You'd think some enterprising video company would have released a boxed set or something somehwhere along the way. I have a few of their posters--including BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS (or something like that). Silly or not, I wasn't about to pass up a 72-year-old poster with a ghost on it. I already have this framed!

THE MAZE (3D style/linen):
Whoo hoo! This is my prize this time. I love me some vintage paper (although this one is unfortunately adhered to linen) from the original 3D flicks of the 1950s. I have been after a copy of THE MAZE for a long time. I am sooooo glad I scored this one. Yowza!

And that is, as they say, THAT! That's 10 for this post. But, believe it or not, I already have a good start on the NEXT post. I delayed "publishing" this as I've had other projects come along that have hindered my writing of the Something Weird post. I had to wait until that was done before adding the link here.

Speaking of links, I have been remiss in linking my mail art blog pages containing my faux horror movie poster-like envelopes to these posts. I'll post the most recent five. One of them has an interview with me about my mail art. (WARNING: I look horrible now.) Take a peek-a-boo looky-loo or don't.

Nice haul, Monster!

Yes, Indiana Jones is for sure a massive flop for Disney.  $300 negative cost, $150 advertisement, the film would need to bring at least $850-900 worldwide to break even (exhibitors take half the receipt).  I will end with less than $400.  Even with ancillary markets and some added value to its parks, it is a massive failure for the mouse house.  Add a poor intl showing for Little Mermaid, a weak BO for Elemental and Haunted Mansion.  Not a good year for Disney.  And now the strike.

This being said, I don't think you can go wrong with collecting Indy.  I am still adding pieces here and there because it remains a cultural landmark.

Thierry! Thanks for visiting the page. I guess with you in the undustry, you'd have a better understanding of how INFY 5 failed. Is it really THAT bad---or did those who were reporting it was a flop (BEFORE if came out) help kill it? I still want to see it. The 4th one was lame--but i am still glad it exists and glad I saw it.  Hmm...

Half a billion dollars loss on a movie is bad, yes.  Not as bad as WB lost on The Flash, because Disney can still milk the Indiana Jones franchise multiple ways, from parks to merchandising, but it will be at the very least a $200-300 millions write off for the company.

I’m sure streaming has cut deeply into movie profits. I don’t know if INDY 5 is on any of the Disney-owned streaming services or not. I know there have still been big box office hits since COVID, but by and large box office over all has been down. Streaming is great for the movie industry but is also killing it.

This is a whole new conversation that prob doesn’t belong in your thread, but I don’t think streaming is necessarily the only culprit.  I think it all comes down to the price of making movies to get people out of their living rooms and into theaters, the amount to advertise such movies (which can be as much as the film itself), the competition from social media, video games, etc, but mostly, at least to me, the quality and originality of these movies.

As you can see with Barbenheimer, give the people what they want to see and they will flock to theaters.  The audience is there, ready to pounce.  Unfortunately, studios have become adverse to risk, for reasons listed above and more, and originality is dying.  Check all the movies in release today: Indiana Jones, 42 years old, Mission Impossible, 27 years old or 57 if you go by the TV show, Oppenheimer, original but 90 years in the making, Barbie, original but 64 years old Mattel brand, Transformers, 16 years old franchise but 80s Hasbro toys, Little Mermaid, Meg 2, Spider-Man, you get the picture.  This to me is the real culprit.

Look at movies released as recently as the 80s and you will see tons of original and fresh ideas.  Again, I’m not saying that people do not have original ideas anymore, but the system, the competition from TV and others, and the price all make it increasingly harder for these ideas to see the light of day.

THIERRY: As I said before, you would know better. But… between streaming and loss of box office revenue, I fear for movie theaters. I love seeing films in theaters. I hope they stick around…

And, what!?! We're B-A-C-K!!! That was...quick. (It just seems that way as I delayed the previous post until I finished my write up on my Something Weird Video adrventure, which I had linked to the page. I've already been working on this one for several weeks.) Truth be told, though, about half of these became mine in a 12 hour period. It is no secret that I am now disabled. I live on a VERY modest income now with very little in the bank to fall back on. There is a saying, "You can't take it with you." There should also be a saying that says "You can't enjoy it if you don't have it." That seemed to have been my mindset during a recent eMovieposter auction. Despite the fact that everything was on linen--there were so many titles I wanted. Things were fairly cheap...until the very end. But... Geez! Dipping into my meager savings was... EXTREMELY STUPID and FOOLISH.

But, it happened. Let's take a look:

PRO BALL CHEERLEADERS:
What the hell is this? I was looking at my eMovie pay & holds, realizing my time was almost up...and I saw this title in there. Zowie! I have ZERO memory of buying this. It is the only thing I "won" the day it was auctioned off, so I can only imagine that it was either a frustration bid OR I was a sucker for this bit of description in the listing: "Note that we haven't auctioned an example of this poster since 2016!" OR BOTH!!!

THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER (International teaser):
I'm already NOT impressed. Who okayed this poster? BUT--it is an EXORCIST sequel (one of the few sequel posters I'll buy). I had to get one. I just hope that the final poster--should there be one--is better than this crap. (Of course, after the god-awful, rip-off, disappointment of HALLOWEEN ENDS--which was co-written and directed by David Gordan Green, the man responsible for co-writing/directing this legacy sequel--my hopes for a decent sequel have already been dashed. I'll still go though...)

HOW TO MURDER A RICH UNCLE (linen):
This isn't the most exciting poster ever...and it could use some color to jazz it up, but the artwork is by Charles Addams (creator of the original Addams Family drawings that led to the TV series and movies). How could I say no? I may already have one--but I'm not sure. I am no fan of linen--but this went cheaply.

HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS:
I saw this movie ages ago...and unfortunately it was not very good. (At least, I remember thinking it was lame...but have no memory of the film itself.) Although I may have this poster already, I don't recall seeing it in my collection. So, I have been looking to get one--but not in any drastic, I-NEED-IT-NOW kind of way. Why? The cast of course. You've got four horror legends altogether in one flick (and on one poster!); Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine. I don't understand why the first three names are above the title and Carradine is below. Even more baffling is the other "star"--Desi Arnaz Jr. Huh!?! Oh well. The movie may not be much, but at least it has a good one sheet.

ALTERED STATES (International style):
How fun to finally have this....although I should have saved the moeny. Oh well. it was one of those days where you bid--hope to win other stuff and why not this, too--can't be present at the end of the auction and... you win only this. Wuh-wuhhh. Oh well. I do dig it and have been casually wanting one for years. (It's way better than the US one sheet.) But--I am poor. I should have saved my cash...

BURIED ALIVE (aka BUIO OMEGA and BEYOND THE DARKNESS):
Zowie! Here is one I totally did NOT expect to get. Yes, it looks like a crappy, low-rent poster. Well, Aquarius Releasing did distribute a lot of amazing sleaze (grindhouse-type stuff), but their motto was obviously keep it cheap. This is the Joe D'Amato flick (not some other BURIED ALIVE) and is pretty sick-yet-cheap Italian trash. I saw it on VHS back in the day as BEYOND THE DARKNESS. This poster isn't super rare--but is uncommon. I've been after one for YEARS, but I never wanted to pay $200 +/- for it.

THE COSMIC MAN (Linen):
I had never heard of this flick until another collector posted an insert for this flick (which I still haven't seen) on a poster website somewhere a few years back. What was this? The image and the obscurity of it (THE COSMIC MAN??? How had I never heard of this? It stars Bruce Bennett, who, under the name of Herman Brix, was one of the original TARZAN's way back in the day...) made me curious. So I became a tad obsessed in trying to get one. Several have either not been nice enough or just plain slipped through my fingers. Despite this being on linen (I'm still NOT a fan...but as I wind down my collecting days, I gotta get what I can get.), I was thrilled to snag one finally!

THE BIRDS (linen):
Aha! This poster has been on my "want list" since I started collecting in the mid/late 1970s. I've bid many times---only to have it stolen away by someone else. I've seen the price rise and rise and rise over the decades, too. I remember seeing one for $50 once in beautiful shape (NOT on linen) years ago, but I just couldn't cough up the cash... STUPID ME! After years and years and years and YEARS of trying, F*#& it! I spent way more money on this than I can afford---and it was only "good to very good" before restoration. I have it now and I am thrilled. Normally I would have thought this would have landed at the end of my current list as the grand prize o' the day. In a way, it is ("LONGEST want list quest"), but in another way... Nah! I love the movie THE BIRDS--which is why I wanted the poster. However the poster itself... doesn't do it for me. I'll hang it (Hello!?! It's THE BIRDS!), but the art/style just isn't my cup o' tea.

ISLE OF THE DEAD (1953 rerelease linen):
Karloff!!!! I am always on the hunt for vintage Boris Karloff posters. I'll never have an original FRANKENSTEIN, and my dream Karloff poster is THE BODY SNATCHER (also soooo hard to get), but I do have a few others I am thrilled to have (BEDLAM,  THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN rerelease, THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU, etc.). Of the others that are still somewhat obtainable, ISLE OF THE DEAD has been near the top of my want list. And actually, this rerelease (which has completely different art than the original release one sheet) has always been my preferred choice of the two. Wow! Wow! Wow!

SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF (linen):
Hot damn! While THE BIRDS may have cost more and some of the other posters may be more interesting, it is THIS poster that I am most excited about in this batch. I have been after one for so long---and this would be perfect outside of my soon-to-be-finished basement tiki room/bar. (It's almost done! Whoo hoo!) I had to fight for this one. (And DAMN YOU, Tr723427, whoever you are, for jumping in at the last minute -- again and again and again -- and driving the price up.) I have no money, but I NEEDED this poster. It was awful. I'd be outbid and go to make another bid...and my internet was down or my phone wouldn't connect. UGH! (This happened with another poster that I've long wanted and should have been mine...I couldn't get a connection before it was too late!) But--whoo hoo! Linen or not, it is finally mine! I have a frame for it reserved already. Tiki on!

And that is 10 posters...which is my usial per post and all I have this time. I will add a few more links to my most recent faux movie poster mail art envelopes below. These are my most recent ones. Take a look or don't.

Link 1:  https://monsterago-go.blogspot.com/2023/07/mail-art-26-it-came-from-mailbox.html

Link 2: https://monsterago-go.blogspot.com/2023/07/mail-art-27-it-came-creeping-in-from.html

And now I am going to lick my wounds and tally up the financial ruin I've left myself in. UGH!

Thank you for visiting.

@Monster_A_GoGo Great finds as always!
Re: ProBall Cheerleaders - I'm totally with you on both the frustration bids AND being a sucker for the descriptions on eMoviePoster! I've found myself bidding on posters for movies I've never seen just because they are listed as "ultra rare" and "never auctioned before"! faint2.gif
Naturally I tell myself I'll watch the movies anyway - and for the most part I have and enjoyed them! It's just more difficult with older films that aren't on any streaming services or even DVD since you have to dig a bit deeper for the lost/forgotten films that have amazing artwork.
I don't usually watch X-Rated films but many of them (Iike this one) have great artwork!

re: The Birds - You're right that the poster itself isn't the greatest. I personally would've preferred Hitchcock be removed (I don't like that he placed himself into many of his posters) and would've rather had the bird attacks/movie scenes be full artwork. Congrats on getting it though! It's definitely a classic that I myself will one day love to own! I'm not a fan of linen either but as you've said sometimes we just need to take what we can get!

Re: Spending costs on posters- Been there myself! I've probably spent way more than I should have on my recent purchases but there are too many great finds to let go! I've always regretted leaving some behind in the past as I've watched their prices increase so I don't like letting that happen anymore if I can help it!

P.S. I totally wish "Nudists In A Haunted House" was a real film! I love what you've done there!

@Monster_A_GoGo Great finds as always!
Hi Heather! Thanks for visiting the post.
PRO-BALL CHEERLEADERS--I still have no memory of bidding on this. I propbably didn't even realize it was an adult movie at the time either. I'm glad there's someone out there who has done the frustration bidding thang like I have (TOO many times!).
THE BIRDS--For such an iconic film, it really is too bad the poster isn't better. Hitchcock really had some crappy posters. (MARNIE comes to mind...) It would have been AWESOME if someone like Reynold Brown had been allowed to take a crack at it. But no. A Hitchcock picture was an A-list picture. Iy had to appeal to the masses--not just the horror hounds.  Oh well. I'm thrilled to have it, but it was a missed opportunity.
POSTER COSTS--Everytime I see a new bunch o' poster go up for auction and I look through them---there are, of course, a zillion things I'd like to have and I bookmark them. Then, I go back to whittle the list down. A lot of them I realize I (THANKFULLY) already have and do NOT need another copy. I have done that for years--buy copies of posters I already have. I guess some posters I love so much I feel I must grab more of them. But there are many times when I sigh with relief knowing I already have a poster I would normally have to fight for. But really--the prices have just mushroomed. Insane!
NUDISTS IN A HAUNTED HOUSE--Ha! I'm glaf you liked my silly envelope. I wish it were a real movie, too. Ha! Thanks for mentioning it.

Hitchcock really had some crappy posters.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but I must say that I could not disagree more.  I have been collecting Hitchcock for a few years now (albeit very slowly because I only want near mint folded posters and they are hard to find in any condition) and I love them all.  Yes, even Marnie.

Great Birds poster, btw.

Nice recent selections, Monster! I love that Birds one sheet - it'd be fun if that sort of marketing came back for modern horror (quotes about how scary it is from the director and pleas to keep the ending a secret, like Psycho). Makes the films seem like an event. Altered States is a favourite of mine too. I didn't know a new Exorcist film was in the works, the make up looks similar to Regan in the original, which I always found really creepy.

Interesting analysis from T on Indy too. I tend to agree about originality. I was hoping to see Indy 5 at the cinema, but due to a holiday, I only had limited time and so chose Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible instead. Having recently watched Indy 1-3 with my kids (still outstanding entertainment), the drop off in quality to 4 is so stark...I don't have high hopes for the 5th film.

Well you certainly have quite the collection. I would love any Hitchcock--even MARNIE--because of what they are, but the art on some (especially the post-BIRDS films), leaves a lot to be desired, I think. But art is subjective. If I am lucky enough to score another Hitchcok, I hope it's LIFEBOAT. That is a nice poster. (REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO are beyond my grasp.)
Thanks for looking!

Hey, thanks for visiting the page and leaving a comment. Yes, INDY 4 was NOT up to par with 1-3, but it was still a better movie than a lot of the knock offs out there. I really want to like INDY 5. I'm not holding my breath, but will give it the benefit of the doubt.
