Double Happiness 1994 Sandra Oh US one-sheet
« Reply #600 on: May 17, 2019, 03:08:19 PM »
https://www.mopopoc.com/2016/11/double-happiness-1994-sandra-oh-us-one.html

This is a 27" x 41" US one-sheet poster for the 1994 film Double Happiness written and directed by Mina Shum and starring Sandra Oh as Jade Li. Plot summary: Jade Li is 22 and a member of an immigrant Chinese family living in Canada. Jade aspires to be an actress and is dating a caucasian boy, both of which go against the wishes of her parents, who want her to have a good-paying job and a Chinese husband. Jade wants to please her family but she also wants to do things her own way. If she could achieve this, it would be "double happiness."  This film was interesting to me in lots of ways.  It was my introduction to the music of the Canadian band Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and seemed to fit in with what I've been learning about Egyptian and Iranian family life.  The poster design uses a photo setup to show the idea of the title, by an artist whose name I do not know.

The Spawning
(marked "Adults Only" in red Arabic letters in the lower right).  Cameron's next effort was The Terminator in 1984.  Plot summary: Genetically modified mutant piranhas nesting in a  sunken ship are making life hazardous for people at a Caribbean resort.

Perseus the Invincible 1963 Locandina
« Reply #603 on: May 18, 2019, 01:37:21 PM »
https://www.mopopoc.com/2016/11/perseus-invincible-1963-richard.html

This is a 13" x 26" Italian locandina poster designed by Rodolfo Gasparri for the 1963 Alberto
De Martini film Perseus against the Monsters AKA Medusa
against the Son of Hercules
AKA Perseo l'invincibile Plot summary:  The mythological Perseus fights his way past a
variety of monsters and human adversaries, discovers his true identity
as the rightful ruler of Argos and is ultimately able to meet and ride
away with the beautiful Princess Andromeda [Anna Ranalli].  Before The Clash of the Titans, in this earlier version of the story of Perseus and Medusa we learn that after Medusa is killed her victims who have been turned to stone are restored to life.  The movie has no counterpart with the fanged red-eyed dragon on Gasparri's poster design.  The movie dragon is a far less imaginative oversized lake lizard; this movie is also without a kraken or any versions of quite a few of the other memorable Harryhausen monsters seen in the 1981 film.  It is still great entertainment!

This is an interesting poster where the star of the film also painted the poster design; he plays the part of an artist
in the film.

This is a 27" x 39" Egyptian poster designed by Kamal Al-Shennawi (1918-2011) for
the 1973 Helmy Rafla film Women of the Night AKA nesa' al-layl                                                                                            based on story, screenplay and dialogue by Ahmed Abdel
Wahab and Faisal Nada and starring Kamal Al-Shennawy as Ahmed
Hamdy. Plot summary: Ahmed Hamdy chose a nightclub singer and dancer
named Zeinab [Nahed Sherif] to model for one of his paintings.  He was
trying to convey a sense of loss in the portrait, which he was
planning to enter in a contest at a government festival. In frequent
visits to Ahmed's studio Zeinab came to understand his various
feelings, the most important of which was his love for her. Ahmed's
painting won a big prize at the government festival and he became
famous.  When he went back to Cairo, Yousria [Nelly] tried to see him
because she wanted him to marry her, but even though she needed him
desperately he could not stand her.

My Hippie Wife 1973 Lebanese poster
« Reply #624 on: May 21, 2019, 07:41:33 PM »
https://www.mopopoc.com/2016/09/my-hippie-wife-1973-duraid-laham.html

This is a 26.5" x 38" Lebanese poster designed by Hassan Mazhar Gasour
for the 1973 Atef Salem film My Hippie Wife [zawgati min
al-hibez] based on story and screenplay by Abdel Hay Adib and starring
Duraid Laham as Ghawar.  Plot summary: A poor boy named Ghawar asked
his friend Hosny [Nihad Qali] if he could live with him because he had
no place to live.  He met some hippies, fell in love with one of them
named Nana [Howeyda] and married her.  He could not find a place for
them to live other than Hosny's place; Hosny disliked them as a couple and
kept trying to them out of his place.

The star of this movie is a Syrian comedian named Duraid Laham, who later
became an important administrator for Syrian broadcasting.  This poster by
the Egyptian artist Gasour is one of the best of the posters made for the
many films of this important comedian.  Watching his films can give a sense of
what Syria was like before it was blasted to smithereens in the current fighting.
People laughed a lot!  Many have lamented those good old days.
