It's tangential to my window card purchase, but people might be interested to know that Jose Espert, like the Renau brothers and several other notable artists of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, was originally from Spain.
Jose Espert and Josep Renau both designed propaganda posters for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. With the victory of Franco's forces in 1939, they were among the many leftist intellectuals and artists who fled Spain.
I assembled a
small album of Espert's propaganda posters (I don't actually own any of these; Spanish Civil War propaganda tends to go for much more than Mexican movie paper). Its interesting to compare styles between the propaganda and movie posters though.
I particularly like the "Primero ganar la guerra" with the house of cards. It's kind of funny to think the war effort would be represented by such a precarious structure, but if you have read about the war (for example in Orwell's Homage to Catalonia), you will recall the Republican side really was rife with bitter infighting among the various factions, so it is an apt metaphor.
